PURPOSE: This study was performed to evaluate three-dimensional positional change of the condyle using 3D CT after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) in skeletal class III patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nine patients who underwent BSSRO for mandibular set-back in skeletal class III malocclusion without facial asymmetry were examined. Miniplates were used for the fixation after BSSRO. 3-D CT was taken before, immediately after, and 6 months after undergoing BSSRO. After creating 3D-CT images using V-works 4.0(TM) program, axial plane, coronal plane, < sagittal plane were configured. Three dimensional positional change, from each plane to the condyle, of the nine patients was measured before, immediately after, and 6 months after undergoing BSSRO. RESULTS: 1. The mean value of mandibular set-back for nine mandibular prognathism patients was 7.36 mm (+/- 2.42 mm). 2. In the axial view, condyle is rotated inward immediately after BSSRO (p < 0.05), comparing with preoperative but outward 6 months after BSSRO comparing with postoperative (p < 0.05). 3. In the axial view, condyle is moved laterally immediately after BSSRO (p < 0.05), comparing with preoperative but regressed 6 months after BSSRO comparing with preoperative (p < 0.05). 4. In the frontal < coronal view, there is changed immediately after and 6 months after BSSRO, comparing with preoperative but no statistical difference. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that three-dimensional positional change of the condyle in skeletal class III patients is observed lateral displacement < inward rotation immediate after BSSRO, but the condyle in 6 months after BSSRO tends to regress to preoperative position.

PURPOSE: Many studies about efficacy of alpha blocker to Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome(CP/CPPS) have shown variable results. The aim of this study was to confirm the efficacy of alpha blocker in young and middle aged patients with CP/CPPS to exclude the effect of benign prostatic hyperplasia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty seven men with CP/CPPS were randomized in a single-blind fashion, to receive either; tosufloxacin(450mg/d)(group 1; 15 patients), or; tosufloxacin(450mg/d) and alfuzosin(10mg/d)(group 2; 42 patients) for 2 months. The NIH chronic prostatitis symptom index (NIH-CPSI), International Prostate Symptom Score(IPSS) and International Index of Erectile Function-5(IIEF-5) were used to grade the symptoms and the quality of life(QoL) impact at the start and 1 and 2 months into the study. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between group 1 and group 2 in relation to age, duration and sub-factor scores of IPSS, NIH-CPSI and IIEF-5 at the baseline. No statistically significant difference in the NIH- CPSI total score was seen, but the urinary and QoL factors in group 2 showed greater improvement. A statistically significant difference was seen in the IPSS total score, especially, obstructive factor in group 2 showed greater improvement. The IIEF-5 total score was seen more increase, but it wasn't significant. CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy of alfuzosin demonstrated improvements in the NIH-CPSI(this was not significant.) and IPSS total score. Especially voiding factors were significantly improved in relation to the NIH-CPSI and IPSS scores in the alfuzosin treatment group.

This prospective study was performed to determine the effective antibiotics for use in treating acute appendicitis patients during the perioperative period. To identify the sensitive antibiotics, the peritoneal fluid was cultured during operation. Also, wound infection was defined as pus or serous discharge in the wound or when we opened the wound under suspicious of a wound problem. The results were obtained as follows: 1) A total of 138 cases treated during the two years from January 1995 to December 1996 were examined; 84 of them (60.87%) were found to have positive peritoneal fluid cultures, of which 29 (34.52%) were monomicrobial and 55 (65.48%) were polymicrobial. 2) The most common species were Escherichia coli (73.81%), Bacteroides (32.14%), Klebsiella (16.67%), Pseudomonas (9.52%), and Streptococcus (9.52%). 3) In the sensitivity test, the most sensitive drugs were aminoglycosides and cefotaxime. 4) Infectious complications, which developed in 27 (19.6%) patients, were wound infection and intraabdominal abscess. 5) The average length of stay for all patients 9.9 days (range: 3 to 32 days). 6) The common organisms curtured from the complication cases were E. coli and Bacteroides.
