Purpose: This study aimed to explore the training experiences and educational needs of personnel working at nationally designated infectious disease control institutions in South Korea. Specifically, it sought to identify the barriers encountered in infectious disease response, assess the perceived effectiveness of current training programs, and determine key competencies and tailored educational needs across occupational groups. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using focus group interviews with 34 participants, including healthcare and nonhealthcare personnel engaged in infectious disease control. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling. Data was collected over 5 weeks via online interviews, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Investigator triangulation and member checking were used to enhance the analytical rigor. Results: The participants reported that the current training program contributed to improved confidence, role clarity, and interdepartmental collaboration. However, multiple barriers were identified, including a lack of standardized scenarios, insufficient hands-on training, unclear guidelines, and low accessibility across roles. Key educational needs included scenario-based simulations, job-specific content, advanced clinical skills, psychological support, and interorganizational collaboration. Training preferences varied by job category, underscoring the need for differentiated role-based training modules. Conclusion These findings highlight the importance of shifting from theory-based to practice-oriented education on infectious disease responses. To build sustainable preparedness systems, training programs should be scenario-driven, repetitive, and psychologically supportive. Institutional policies must ensure flexibility, equity of access, and proper incentives for participation. Future efforts should prioritize the development of standardized competency-based curricula tailored to diverse occupational roles within infectious disease response systems.

Background: Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by erythema, papules, ocular symptoms, and heightened sensitivity. Patients with neurogenic symptoms such as burning or stinging remain particularly difficult to manage. Current guidelines often underrepresent energy-based devices (EBDs), pigmentary sequelae, psychosocial burden, and ocular comorbidities. Objective: To examine Korean dermatologists’ expert perspectives on rosacea management, focusing on skin sensitivity, neurogenic symptoms, pigmentary changes, psychosocial impact, ocular involvement, and EBD use. Methods: A web-based, 29-item survey was administered to 25 board-certified Korean dermatologists (May–June 2025). Quantitative and qualitative responses were analyzed. Results: Erythematotelangiectatic and papulopustular phenotypes with sensitivity skin predominated. EBDs (pulsed dye laser, intense pulsed light) were frequently used but limited by cost and sensitivity issues. Neurogenic symptoms were recognized but rarely treated with neuromodulators. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation was infrequent, yet monitoring was inconsistent.Psychosocial and ocular aspects were acknowledged but seldomly systematically addressed.Respondents expressed interest in emerging adjunctive treatments such as cold plasma, skin boosters, and holistic care approaches. Conclusion Korean dermatologists adopt individualized strategies for rosacea, yet practice gaps remain regarding neurogenic symptoms, pigmentary complications, and psychosocial and ocular comorbidities. Findings support the need for updated multidisciplinary, phenotype-driven guidelines aligned with real-world practice.

Background: A systematic evaluation of potential living liver donors is essential to ensure donor safety and optimize recipient outcomes in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). This study aimed to assess donor acceptance rates and reasons for disqualification among individuals evaluated for LDLT at a high-volume transplant center over a one-year period. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 1,087 potential living liver donors who presented for LDLT evaluation in 2023. Of these, 991 candidates advanced beyond the initial screening (Stage 1) and underwent comprehensive clinical, imaging, and pathological assessments (Stages 2 and 3). Candidates who discontinued after Stage 1 were excluded due to the absence of documented reasons for non-progression. Results: Among the 991 candidates who proceeded beyond initial screening, 473 (47.7%) completed the full donor evaluation, of whom 466 were judged to be suitable donors. Among suitable donors, 384 (82.4%) proceeded to donor hepatectomy, whereas 82 did not, primarily due to recipient-related factors such as clinical deterioration or withdrawal of consent. Donor ineligibility was determined in 422 candidates (42.6%), most commonly due to inadequate remnant liver volume (52.8%), hepatic steatosis (20.6%), and insufficient graft size (10.2%). Among candidates undergoing Stage 2 evaluation, 162 (16.3%) failed to meet steatosis criteria; 126 were excluded solely for steatosis and advised weight reduction, and 39 subsequently became eligible and successfully donated. Conclusion In this high-volume LDLT center, donor disqualification was primarily driven by remnant liver volume and hepatic steatosis. Targeted interventions such as weight reduction enabled successful donation in a subset of initially ineligible candidates, underscoring the importance of individualized donor evaluation and pre-donation optimization.

Objective: To explain process of developing basic veterinary clinical performance guidelines, based on frequently observable clinical manifestations, thereby supporting competencybased veterinary education in Korea. Methods: A structured review of learning outcomes established by Korean Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (KAVMC) was conducted by a planning committee including veterinary educators, practitioners, and advisory members. Owner-oriented descriptions were used to frame each performance task, and each was mapped to corresponding learning outcomes. These tasks were aligned with learning outcomes recommended by the KAVMC to support the development of communication, clinical reasoning, and performance-related competencies among veterinary students, thereby enhancing day-one clinical readiness. Results: In total, 63 clinical manifestations for a guidebook format that can be used for clinical education were identified and categorized by organ systems that are described in language understandable to animal owners. Conclusions and Relevance: The basic veterinary clinical performance guidelines based on common clinical manifestations would serve as a vital component in veterinary education to reinforce core graduation competencies.

Background: and Purpose: Given the irreversible nature of dementia, this study examined the effects of a 20-week exercise-based dementia prevention program in community-dwelling older adults, focusing on prior exercise experience and program adherence. Methods: In this exploratory, non-randomized trial, 55 older adults (65–79 years) were allocated to an intervention (n=26) or control (n=29) group, and blinding was not feasible.The intervention comprised supervised rhythmic aerobic exercise with cognitive-motor components performed three times per week. Cognition was the primary outcome, and secondary outcomes included physical fitness, blood pressure, and blood biomarkers.Subgroup analyses classified participants by prior exercise experience and intervention exposure: G1 and G2 comprised control subgroups with no intervention exposure, whereas G3 and G4 comprised intervention-exposed subgroups stratified by adherence. Results: No significant group-by-time interactions were observed for cognitive outcomes.Participants with prior exercise experience and low adherence (G2) showed significant improvement on the Korean Mini-Mental State Examination (β=1.66, p=0.024) despite declines in physical fitness, whereas higher adherence in G3–G4 was associated with stable or favorable physical performance, with G4 showing a positive trend in the 30-second sit-tostand test. Systolic blood pressure decreased significantly in G2–G4. Conclusions Although overall cognitive gains were modest and not group specific, prior exercise experience and sustained adherence were associated with favorable changes in physical fitness and vascular outcomes, suggesting that tailored multicomponent exercise programs and long-term engagement may help promote cognitive health in older adults.

Background: and Purpose: Tailored physical exercise interventions have the potential to promote cognitive health in older adults and offer significant advantages for those more vulnerable to decline. The specific relationship between physical fitness and cognition among the elderly has not been clearly established. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the relationship between physical fitness and cognitive function in older Korean adults. Methods: Eighty-four community-dwelling older adults (mean age: 70.7±5.3 years; 81.0% female) completed a standardized physical fitness battery assessing handgrip strength, sit-and-reach, 30-second sit-to-stand, 2-minute stationary march, 3-m sit-walk-and-return, figure-8-walk, and T-wall response time. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Descriptive statistics, partial correlation analyses, and stepwise multiple linear regression were conducted. Results: Slower T-wall response time was significantly correlated with lower RBANS total index, immediate memory, and delayed memory scores. In regression models, slower T-wall response time was independently associated with lower RBANS total index (β=−0.234, p=0.026) and delayed memory scores (β=−0.295, p=0.029). The regression model for immediate memory was not statistically significant overall; therefore, no predictive conclusion was drawn for this domain. Higher education showed a significant positive association with cognitive performance. Conclusions Coordination, as measured by T-wall response time, emerged as the only physical fitness component consistently associated with cognitive performance in older adults. Coordination-related fitness may be an important correlate of cognitive function in older adults and a promising target for future exercise interventions.

Background: Multiple perinatal factors influence hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (HS PDA) in preterm infants.Purpose: This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with HS PDA in very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs) and determine the predictors of surgical ligation. Methods: This retrospective study included VLBWIs born at 23–32 weeks’ gestation whose HS PDA properties could be identified using echocardiography. The infants were stratified into 2 groups based on gestational age (23–27 and 28–32 weeks). Results: Among the 496 included VLBWIs, 171 had no PDA, 90 had non-HS PDA, and 235 had HS PDA. In infants born at 23–27 weeks’ gestation, risk factors for HS PDA included low birth weight, the absence of histological chorioamnionitis, and premature rupture of membranes. For VLBWIs born at 28–32 weeks’ gestation, HS PDA was associated with lower birth weight, frequent surfactant treatment, and maternal hypertension. Within the HS PDA group, infants with a lower birth weight or who received incomplete antenatal steroid administration had an increased likelihood of requiring surgical ligation, whereas those with a small-for-gestational-age status had a decreased need for surgical ligation. Conclusion Recognizing these risk factors can aid the development of targeted treatment strategies for HS PDA in VLBWIs, enabling early ligation and potentially reducing the need for surgical management.

Background/Aims: We investigated the clinical practice patterns of Korean endoscopists for the endoscopic resection of colorectal polyps. Methods: From September to November 2021, an online survey was conducted regarding the preferred resection methods for colorectal polyps, and responses were compared with the international guidelines. Results: Among 246 respondents, those with <4 years, 4–9 years, and ≥10 years of experiencein colonoscopy practices accounted for 25.6%, 34.1%, and 40.2% of endoscopists, respectively. The most preferred resection methods for non-pedunculated lesions were cold forceps polypectomy for ≤3 mm lesions (81.7%), cold snare polypectomy for 4–5 mm (61.0%) and 6–9 mm (43.5%) lesions, hot endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for 10–19 mm lesions (72.0%), precut EMR for 20–25 mm lesions (22.0%), and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for ≥26 mm lesions (29.3%). Hot EMR was favored for pedunculated lesions with a head size <20 mm and stalk size <10 mm (75.6%) and for those with a head size ≥20 mm or stalk size ≥10 mm (58.5%). For suspected superficial and deep submucosal lesions measuring 10–19 mm and ≥20 mm, ESD (26.0% and 38.6%) and surgery (36.6% and 46.3%) were preferred, respectively. The adherence rate to the guidelines ranged from 11.2% to 96.9%, depending on the size, shape, and histology of the lesions. Conclusions Adherence to the guidelines for endoscopic resection techniques varied depend-ing on the characteristics of colorectal polyps. Thus, an individualized approach is required to increase adherence to the guidelines.

Purpose: Primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma (PMBCL) is a rare subtype of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.Radiation therapy (RT) has served as the primary treatment option for PMBCL; however, its role has been questioned with the advent of intensified immunochemotherapy. This study aimed to investigate the role of consolidative RT in the primary treatment of PMBCL. Methods: This single-center retrospective study analyzed the survival outcomes of 65 patients newly diagnosed with PMBCL. The patients were divided into three treatment groups: (1) EPOCH-R (etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and rituximab), (2) R-CHOP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone), and (3) R-CHOP with consolidative RT. Results: The objective response and complete remission rates were 86.2% and 63.1%, respectively, with 3-year pro‑ gression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates of 72% and 81%, respectively. All patients in the R-CHOP + RT group achieved an objective response with better PFS) than those who did not receive consolidative RT (p = 0.028), although there was no significant difference in OS (p = 0.102). Consolidative RT benefited patients with an initially bulky disease or insufficient end-of-treatment response. The predictive value of  18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose positronemission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) in assessing the treatment response in PMBCL was revali‑ dated, showing that patients who achieved negative end-of-treatment PET-CT had significantly better survival outcomes than others. Conclusions R-CHOP is a useful alternative regimen when intensified chemotherapy is not feasible. Consolidative RT should be considered in cases with an initially bulky disease and insufficient end-of-treatment response.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate long-term treatment outcomes in patients with localized gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma treated with radiotherapy (RT). Materials and Methods: A total of 229 patients who received RT in 10 tertiary hospitals between 2010 and 2019 were included in this multicenter analysis. Response after RT was based on esophagogastroduodenoscopy after RT. Locoregional relapse-free survival (LRFS) and disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS) were evaluated. Results: After a median follow-up time of 93.2 months, 5-year LRFS, DFS, and OS rates were 92.8%, 90.4%, and 96.1%, respectively. LRFS, DFS, and OS rates at 10 years were 90.3%, 87.7%, and 92.8%, respectively. Of 229 patients, 228 patients (99.6%) achieved complete remission after RT. Five-year LRFS was significantly lower in patients with stage IIE than in those with stage IE (77.4% vs. 94.2%, p=0.047). Patients with age ≥ 60 had significantly lower LRFS than patients with age < 60 (89.3% vs. 95.1%, p=0.003). In the multivariate analysis, old age (≥ 60 years) was a poor prognostic factor for LRFS (hazard ratio, 3.72; confidence interval, 1.38 to 10.03; p=0.009). Grade 2 or higher gastritis was reported in 69 patients (30.1%). Secondary malignancies including gastric adenocarcinoma, malignant lymphoma, lung cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer were observed in 11 patients (4.8%) after RT. Conclusion Patients treated with RT for localized gastric MALT lymphoma showed favorable 10-year outcomes. Radiation therapy is an effective treatment without an increased risk of secondary cancer. The toxicity for RT to the stomach is not high.
