This study examined the cross-border shopping trends of dietary supplements in Korea, focusing on the major health functional foods.MATERIALS/METHODS: This study analyzed the customs clearance data provided by the Korea Customs Service, spanning 2019–2021. The term ‘health functional foods,’ which are manufactured with functional ingredients specified by law, was distinguished from the broader concept of ‘dietary supplements.’ The trends in dietary supplements and the major types of health functional foods in cross-border shopping were analyzed. The top 10 most purchased health functional foods were identified and analyzed by consumer gender and age group. RESULTS: Dietary supplements constituted 19.1% of all cross-border items, with the primary consumers being women aged 30 and 40 yrs. The most popular type of health functional foods was the ‘multi-nutrient product,’ comprising 14.5% of all health functional food items.‘Protein’ was popular among men and younger age groups, while ‘probiotics’ was favored by women. In particular, 32.3% of health functional food items were related to blood health. CONCLUSION The cross-border market for dietary supplements in Korea is experiencing growth, with consumer preferences varying by gender and age. These findings can assist in the development of regulatory policies that align with market trends and consumer needs in cross-border shopping for dietary supplements.

Reports on cases of fatal hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn and acute hemolytic transfusion reactions suggest that antibodies against Jr a (anti-Jra ) have potential clinical significance.Identifying anti-Jra is challenging owing to a lack of commercially available antisera. We developed an alternative approach to rapidly predict the presence of anti-Jra using the TaqMan single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-genotyping method. Methods: Residual peripheral blood samples from 10 patients suspected of having the anti-Jr a were collected. Two samples with confirmed Jr(a–) RBCs and anti-Jra were used to validate the TaqMan genotyping assay by comparing the genotyping results with direct sequencing. The accuracy of the assay in predicting the presence of anti-Jra was verified through crossmatching with in-house Jr(a–) O+ RBCs. Results: The TaqMan-genotyping method was validated with two Jr(a–) RBC- and anti-Jra -confirmed samples that showed concordant Jr a genotyping and direct sequencing results.Jra genotyping for the remaining samples and crossmatching the serum samples with inhouse Jr(a–) O+ RBCs showed consistent results. Conclusions We validated a rapid, simple, accurate, and cost-effective method for predicting the presence of anti-Jra using a TaqMan-based SNP-genotyping assay. Implementing this method in routine practice in clinical laboratories will assist in solving difficult problems regarding alloantibodies to high-prevalence RBC antigens and ultimately aid in providing safe and timely transfusions and proper patient care.

By investigating the characteristics and prognosis of breast cancer (BC) patients who have undergone hormone replacement therapy (HRT), this study addresses a gap in the existing literature. A total of 17,355 postmenopausal patients with BC were analyzed using data from the Korea Breast Cancer Society database (2000–2014). Among them, 3,585 (20.7%) had a history of HRT before BC diagnosis (HRT group), while 13,770 (79.3%) never received HRT (non-HRT group). The HRT group exhibited an earlier pathologic stage, lower histologic and nuclear grades, and a higher rate of breast conservation surgery compared to the non-HRT group. Furthermore, this group had a higher rate of screening participation and a greater proportion of patients with a normal or overweight body mass index (BMI). The prognosis of the HRT group was better than that of the non-HRT group, with a 5-year overall survival rate of 93.9% versus 91.7% (p < 0.001). The hazard ratio for the HRT group was 0.7 (95% confidence interval, 0.608–0.805; p < 0.001). Increased screening participation, longer HRT duration, and a normal or overweight BMI were associated with a better prognosis in the HRT group. Patients with BC who underwent HRT showed better clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis than those who did not receive HRT. The results highlighted significant differences in patients who underwent screening and those with a normal or overweight BMI. Furthermore, a longer HRT duration was associated with a better prognosis.
