Purpose: Most cancers are preventable by improving dietary habits; therefore, individuals with poor dietary behaviors should be encouraged to adopt more active steps to prevent cancer. We surveyed Korean adults to identify the awareness and practice of the recommended guidelines for dietary factors. Materials and Methods: The 2023 Korean National Cancer Prevention for Dietary Awareness and Practice Survey was a cross-sectional online survey of 4,000 adults aged 20–69. The survey included questions on sociodemographics, lifestyle, and awareness and practice of five dietary recommendations (consuming fruits and vegetables, consuming a balanced diet, avoiding salt, charred foods, and alcohol intake). Results: Despite more than 90.0% being aware that each dietary recommendation can be a risk determinant for cancer, the practice rate for recommendations showed lower rates than recognition. Especially, in both males and females, the younger (odds ratio [OR], 1.971 in males and 4.863 in females), with no nutritional education (OR, 2.715 in males and 2.093 in females), and the obese (OR, 1.451 in males and 1.579 in females) had higher odds of significant non-adherents (failed to comply with 3-5 recommendations) than participants who were older, had nutritional education, and normal body mass index, respectively. Conclusion Although there is high awareness of dietary recommendations for cancer prevention, participants who were younger, had no nutritional education, or were obese showed poor adherence to cancer-preventive dietary practices. Our findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to improve the dietary habits of this at-risk population.

Despite this transition, Korea’s cancer prevention guidelines have remained consistent since their establishment about 18 years ago. This study aimed to investigate the degree of awareness and practice to global dietary guidelines among Korean adults and identify demographic and lifestyle factors associated with low practice. A cross-sectional survey conducted in 2023 included 4,000 adults and assessed their awareness and practice of four global recommendations: “Eat a diet rich in whole grains,” “Limit consumption of processed meat,” “Limit consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages,” and “Limit consumption of fast and other processed foods.” While more than half of the participants recognized the guidelines’ importance for cancer prevention, implementation rates remained below 40%. Furthermore, over 80% of the respondents expressed a compelling requirement for updated and tailored dietary guidelines. Younger individuals, those who were physically inactive, individuals who had not received prior nutrition education, and participants with obesity were more likely to exhibit low practice, particularly to guidelines limiting processed foods and sugary beverages intake. These findings highlight the need to revise Korea’s cancer prevention recommendations by incorporating global dietary practices and addressing the westernized eating patterns prevalent within the population. Efforts should focus on promoting these updated guidelines through targeted education and public health interventions that improve practice, especially in high-risk groups, and effectively mitigate the burden of diet-related cancers in Korea.

The easiest recommendations to follow were “reducing salt intake and avoiding burnt or charred foods” (men: 29.9%; women: 28.4%), whereas the most difficult recommendation was “engaging in regular physical activity” (men: 32.5%; women: 34.4%). CONCLUSIONS While awareness of cancer prevention recommendations was high, the practice of these recommendations was low. Gender influenced changes in awareness and practice rates over time, reflecting a large gap in practice. Future research should explore appropriate intervention points for cancer prevention practices and the development of more effective cancer prevention policies.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are undifferentiated cells that can differentiate into specific cell lineages when exposed to the right conditions. The ability of MSCs to differentiate into particular cells is considered very important in biological research and clinical applications. MSC spheroids are clusters of MSCs cultured in three dimensions, which play an important role in enhancing the proliferation and differentiation of MSCs. MSCs can also participate in vascular formation by differentiating into endothelial cells and secreting paracrine factors. Vascularization ability is essential in impaired tissue repair and function recovery. Therefore, the vascularization ability of MSCs, which enhances angiogenesis and accelerates tissue healing has made MSCs a promising tool for tissue regeneration. However, MSC spheroids are a relatively new research field, and more research is needed to understand their full potential. METHODS: In this review, we highlight the importance of MSC spheroids’ vascularization ability in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine while providing the current status of studies on the MSC spheroids’ vascularization and suggesting potential future research directions for MSC spheroids. RESULTS: Studies both in vivo and in vitro have demonstrated MSC spheroids’ capacity to develop into endothelial cells and stimulate vasculogenesis. CONCLUSION MSC spheroids show potential to enhance vascularization ability in tissue regeneration. Yet, further research is required to comprehensively understand the relationship between MSC spheroids and vascularization mechanisms.

Background: The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in patients with advanced lung cancer is increasing. Despite ongoing studies to predict the efficacy of ICIs, its use in clinical practice remains difficult. Thus, we aimed to discover a predictive marker by analyzing blood cell characteristics and developing a scoring system for patients treated with ICIs. Methods: This was a prospective multicenter study in patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who received ICIs as second-line treatment from June 2021 to November 2022. Blood cell parameters in routine blood samples were evaluated using an automated hematology analyzer. Immune checkpoint inhibitor score (IChIS) was calculated as the sum of neutrophil count score and immature granulocyte score. Results: A total of 143 patients from four institutions were included. The treatment response was as follows: partial response, 8.4%; stable disease, 37.1%; and progressive disease, 44.8%. Median progression-free survival and overall survival after ICI treatment was 3.0 and 8.3 months, respectively. Median progression-free survival in patients with an IChIS of 0 was 4.0 months, which was significantly longer than 1.9 months in patients with an IChIS of 1 and 1.0 month in those with an IChIS of 2 (p=0.001). The median overall survival in patients with an IChIS of 0 was 10.2 months, which was significantly longer than 6.8 and 1.8 months in patients with an IChIS of 1 and 2, respectively (p<0.001). Conclusion Baseline IChIS could be a potential biomarker for predicting survival benefit of immunotherapy in NSCLC.
