OBJECTIVES: Gender is a major determinant of health behaviors that influences cancer prevention awareness and practices. This study investigated the relationship of the awareness and practice rates of cancer prevention recommendations with gender and socioeconomic status. METHODS: We used data from the Korean National Cancer Prevention Awareness and Practice Survey (2023). The sample included 4,000 men and women aged 20-74 years. We conducted multiple logistic regression analyses to evaluate associations with the awareness and practices of cancer prevention, and a joinpoint regression analysis using age-standardized rates to analyze trends in awareness and practice rates from 2007 to 2023. RESULTS: The awareness rates were 79.4% and 81.2% for men and women, respectively. The overall practice rates were substantially lower (43.1% for men and 48.9% for women). For men, awareness rates did not differ significantly by socio-demographic characteristics, but practice rates increased with age (20-29: 15.9%; 60-74: 53.8%). For women, both awareness (20-29: 73.0%; 60-74: 85.7%) and practice (20-29: 16.8%; 60-74: 67.5%) rates increased with age. The easiest recommendations to follow were “reducing salt intake and avoiding burnt or charred foods” (men: 29.9%; women: 28.4%), whereas the most difficult recommendation was “engaging in regular physical activity” (men: 32.5%; women: 34.4%). CONCLUSIONS While awareness of cancer prevention recommendations was high, the practice of these recommendations was low. Gender influenced changes in awareness and practice rates over time, reflecting a large gap in practice. Future research should explore appropriate intervention points for cancer prevention practices and the development of more effective cancer prevention policies.

Due to rapid westernization, Korean dietary habits have emerged as significant risk factors for chronic disease and cancer. Despite this transition, Korea’s cancer prevention guidelines have remained consistent since their establishment about 18 years ago. This study aimed to investigate the degree of awareness and practice to global dietary guidelines among Korean adults and identify demographic and lifestyle factors associated with low practice. A cross-sectional survey conducted in 2023 included 4,000 adults and assessed their awareness and practice of four global recommendations: “Eat a diet rich in whole grains,” “Limit consumption of processed meat,” “Limit consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages,” and “Limit consumption of fast and other processed foods.” While more than half of the participants recognized the guidelines’ importance for cancer prevention, implementation rates remained below 40%. Furthermore, over 80% of the respondents expressed a compelling requirement for updated and tailored dietary guidelines. Younger individuals, those who were physically inactive, individuals who had not received prior nutrition education, and participants with obesity were more likely to exhibit low practice, particularly to guidelines limiting processed foods and sugary beverages intake. These findings highlight the need to revise Korea’s cancer prevention recommendations by incorporating global dietary practices and addressing the westernized eating patterns prevalent within the population. Efforts should focus on promoting these updated guidelines through targeted education and public health interventions that improve practice, especially in high-risk groups, and effectively mitigate the burden of diet-related cancers in Korea.

Background: The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in patients with advanced lung cancer is increasing. Despite ongoing studies to predict the efficacy of ICIs, its use in clinical practice remains difficult. Thus, we aimed to discover a predictive marker by analyzing blood cell characteristics and developing a scoring system for patients treated with ICIs. Methods: This was a prospective multicenter study in patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who received ICIs as second-line treatment from June 2021 to November 2022. Blood cell parameters in routine blood samples were evaluated using an automated hematology analyzer. Immune checkpoint inhibitor score (IChIS) was calculated as the sum of neutrophil count score and immature granulocyte score. Results: A total of 143 patients from four institutions were included. The treatment response was as follows: partial response, 8.4%; stable disease, 37.1%; and progressive disease, 44.8%. Median progression-free survival and overall survival after ICI treatment was 3.0 and 8.3 months, respectively. Median progression-free survival in patients with an IChIS of 0 was 4.0 months, which was significantly longer than 1.9 months in patients with an IChIS of 1 and 1.0 month in those with an IChIS of 2 (p=0.001). The median overall survival in patients with an IChIS of 0 was 10.2 months, which was significantly longer than 6.8 and 1.8 months in patients with an IChIS of 1 and 2, respectively (p<0.001). Conclusion Baseline IChIS could be a potential biomarker for predicting survival benefit of immunotherapy in NSCLC.

BACKGROUND: Though several factors have been found to be associated with depression, yet many others remain uncovered. A few studies have focused on the correlation between smoking and depression. This study was designed to explore whether there was a relationship between smoking and depression in a Korean adult group.METHODS: This study was based on the 2014 data of 17,780 Koreans obtained from the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES, 2013–2015). The participants' depression status was evaluated based on their responses to survey. The correlation between smoking and depression was examined using multiple linear regression analysis after adjusting confounders. The result was represented as correlation factors, and a P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.RESULTS: Our study revealed higher depression prevalence in the current smoker group as compared to non-smokers and ex-smokers and this difference was statistically significant.CONCLUSION: Smoking status was statistically significantly related to depression. Among the three smoking status groups, the current smoker group had the highest prevalence of depression. Hence s stopping smoking was considered to be effective and important to prevent depression.

BACKGROUND: The definition of sarcopenia focuses on muscle mass and function. Sarcopenic obesity is the relative excess of fat tissue with decreased muscle mass. We examined the association between cigarette smoking and sarcopenia according to obesity in middle-aged and elderly Koreans. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 9,385 subjects (age ≥50 years) based on data from the fourth and fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2008–2011). Smoking groups were categorized by smoking status and the number of cigarettes smoked daily. Sarcopenia was defined as weight-adjusted appendicular skeletal muscle mass of 2 standard deviations below the sex-specific mean for young adults. Obesity was defined as fat mass ≥30% for men and ≥40% for women. Subjects were categorized into three groups: sarcopenic obese (SO), sarcopenic non-obese (SNO), and normal. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between smoking and SNO and SO. RESULTS: Among men, current smokers were more associated with SNO than never-smokers (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 3.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09–10.26). However, there was no significant association between smoking status and SNO in women or SO in either sex. Among current smokers, moderate smokers (11–20 cigarettes/d) were more likely to be SNO (adjusted OR, 5.81; 95% CI, 1.12–30.31) and heavy smokers (>20 cigarettes/d) were more likely to be SO (adjusted OR, 9.53; 95% CI, 1.65–55.01) than light smokers (<11 cigarettes/d). CONCLUSION: In men, smoking was positively associated with SNO, and heavy smokers were more likely to be SO than light smokers.
