Objective To regard the implication of viruses particularly herpes in pemphigus vulgaris, and assess and compare the level of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV1 and HSV2),cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in patients with pemphigus vulgarisand healthy people. Methods In this study,23 patients with pemphigus vulgaris and 26 healthy individuals comprised the experimental and control groups, respectively.Serum samples were taken from both groups;the levels of IgG antibodies against HSV1,HSV2,CMV and EBV were measured using ELISA.Results Immunoglobulin G titer was higher for all four viruses in the patient group in comparison to the control group. This difference was significant for anti-EBV,anti-CMV and anti-HSV2 (t=2.16,P<0.05;t =4.76,P< 0.01;t=3.75,P<0.01),respectively,but not significant for anti-HSV1 (t=0.52,P>0.05).Conclusion Viruses including EBV,CMV,and HSV2 probably play a role in the pathogenesis of pemphigus in addition to the effects of genetics, toxins and other predisposing factors. In this study,no statistically significant relationship was observed between HSV1 and pemphigus vulgaris.More studies must be done in this regard.

Objective To observe changes in electrolyte concentration and pathology of the eyeball content in rabbits following open ocular trauma coupled with seawater immersion. Methods Ca2+,Na+,K+ levels in the lens and vitreous body were determined at the different time points with spectrometry following open ocular trauma coupled with seawater immersion.Changes in the lens were also observed. Results Following seawater immersion,Ca2+,Na+ concentrations of the lens and vitreous body gradually increased, while K+ concentration of the lens continuously decreased and that of vitreous body continuously elevated, and those changes became increasingly obvious with the extension of time.One-week continuous observation after halfhour immersion indicated that Ca2+,Na+,K+ levels were slightly higher, but returned to normal after 2 weeks.A small part of the lens became cloudy after 30-minute immersion, and most part of the lens was cloudy after 2-hour immersion. Conclusions Changes in the levels of Ca2+,Na+ and K+ in the lens and vitreous body were closely associated with ocular lesion. It was difficult for the eye ball to recover after over half an hour seawater immersion.

Objective To observe the changes of renal protein expression after electroacupuncture (EA) of "Taixi" (KI 3) of the Kidney Meridian of Foot-Shaoyin in healthy rats so as to explore the relationship between KI 3 and the Kidney. Methods Twelve adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into normal control group (n=6) and EA group (n=6). EA (2 Hz/100 Hz,2-4 mA) was applied to bilateral KI 3 for 20 min, once a day for 7 days. Under anesthesia, the rats were perfused transcardiacally with ice saline and their kidneys removed for extracting the total proteins and assaying the differentially expressed proteins with two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE),Image MasterTM 2 D Platinum Software and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) MALDI-TOF-MS,respectively. Results Image MasterTM 2 D Platinum Software analysis showed that after EA,9 protein points of the kidney tissues expressed differentially above 3-fold in comparison with control group were upregulated,2 of which were identified to be NAD-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase and Quinone reductase. No downregulated differentially expressed proteins were found in the kidney tissues. Conclusion EA of "Taixi" (KI 3) can increase the expression of NAD-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase and Quinone reductase in the kidney tissue, suggesting an increase of energy metabolism after EA and a close correlation between the KI 3 (Source-point) and the Kidney.
