Depression is closely associated with a neuro-endocrine-immune(NEI)system imbalance. The"excessive vitality leading to restraint and counter-regulation(Kang Hai Cheng Zhi)"theory elucidates the self-regulating mechanism for maintaining dynamic equilibrium in the body, and serves as an importance principle guiding treatment formulation and medication selection.Based on the correlation between NEI system imbalance and the traditional Chinese medicine pathogenesis of depression, and integrating the"Kang Hai Cheng Zhi"theory, the author posits that the pathogenesis of depression lies in overactive liver invading spleen, earth dampness impeding wood′s ascendancy, and disharmony between body and mind,as well as imbalance in storage and discharge functions of liver and kidney, disharmony between Yin and Yang, and disrupted counter-regulation.This dosely aligns with two key pathological methanisms at the micro level:microglial-limbic system homeostatic imbalance and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis-inflammatory circuit dysregulation.Clinically, the treatment principle for depression adheres to supporting the counter-regulation to restrain excess, with herbal interventions using strategies such as restraining wood to support earth, dredging earth to unblock wood, and harmonizing pivotal functions,as well as nourishing water to nurture wood, warming kidney to tonify liver, and relieving depression to calm the spirit. These approaches aim to regulate the liver, spleen, and kidney, embodying the core therapeutic tenet of"striving for equilibrium,"thereby restoring the body′s self-regulating capability.

Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) refer to a group of diseases occurring on the oral mucosa that harbor the potential to progress into oral squamous cell carcinoma, including oral leukoplakia, oral erythroplakia, discoid lupus erythematosus of the oral mucosa, oral submucous fibrosis, oral lichen planus, actinic cheilitis, etc. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one type of diseases characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, with a high incidence and mortality rate worldwide. Hyperglycemia is the characteristic metabolic change in DM patients and those in the pre-diabetic stage, playing a determinative role in many complications related to DM. A number of clinical studies had revealed an association between hyperglycemia and OPMD, as well as its malignant transformation. This article will review the potential regulatory effects and mechanisms of high glucose states, such as diabetes, on OPMD, and assess the correlation between hyperglycemia and the malignant transformation of OPMD.

Objective To explore the value of synchrotron radiation micro-CT(SR-pCT)and automatic marker watershed image segmentation for quantifying three-dimensional local bone tissue and blood vessels in mouse models of breast cancer tibia metastasis. Methods Mouse models with breast cancer bone metastasis in tibia were established and underwent oral Vatalanib, injection of Bevacizumab, combination of Vatalanib or Bevacizumab,or injection of placebo, respectively. On the 8th day(time point T1)and the 22nd day(time point T2)after injection of tumor cells, the tibia bone was scanned using combined vascular contrast injection and SR-pCT,and high-resolution simultaneous imaging of local bone tissue and vascular network were achieved. Then bone tissue and vessels on images were segmented using automatic marker watershed image-segmentation method, global threshold method and region growing method, respectively, and the quality of segmentations were assessed with Dice similarity coefficient(DSC).The anatomical quantitative parameters of tibia with breast cancer metastasis were obtained, including the fraction of bone volume in total volume(BV/TV),fraction of vessel volume in total volume(VV/TV),the mean thickness of bone(B.Th)and the mean thickness of vessel(V.Th).The anatomical quantitative parameters were compared among different treatments at the same time point, also between different time points under the same treatment. Results DSC for segmentation of local tibia bone tissue and vascular structures based on automatic marker watershed image segmentation method were all greater than 0.95,higher than that of other methods(all P<0.05).No significant difference of anatomical quantitative parameters was found under different treatments at T1(all P>0.05),and V.Th under the combined treatment were lower than that under other treatments at T2(all P<0.05).Compared with T1,BV/TV and B.Th at T2 increased while VV/TV at T2 decreased in tibia metastasis under combination treatment(all P<0.05),BV/TV,B.Th and V.Th at T2 increased under Vatalanib or Bevacizumab treatment(all P<0.05),and BV/TV and B.Th at T2 increased under placebo(both P<0.05).Conclusion The combination of SR-pCT and automatic marker watershed method could be used to initially quantify three-dimensional structures of local bone tissue and blood vessels in mouse models of breast cancer tibia metastasis.

Chinese Journal of Endemiology 2023;42(2):169-172
Due to the cloud-like appearance of the dental surface of dental fluorosis, serious tooth defect may occur, thus affecting the overall beauty of the face. The clinical effect of dental fluorosis is not better than that of normal teeth in the application of repair, which brings some difficulties to the clinicians. The application of porcelain veneers in the restoration of dental fluorosis has been widely concerned by clinicians and researchers due to its advantages of high aesthetics, small amount of tooth tissue abrasion, and good biocompatibility. Therefore, this article comprehensively discusses the application effect and influencing factors of porcelain veneers in the restoration of dental fluorosis, in order to provide some reference for clinical application.

The estrogen receptor (ER)-negative breast cancer subtype is aggressive with few treat-ment options available. To identify specific prognostic factors for ER-negative breast cancer, this study included 705,729 and 1034 breast invasive cancer patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiol-ogy, and End Results (SEER) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases, respectively. To identify key differential kinase-substrate node and edge biomarkers between ER-negative and ER-positive breast cancer patients, we adopted a network-based method using correlation coefficients between molecular pairs in the kinase regulatory network. Integrated analysis of the clinical and molecular data revealed the significant prognostic power of kinase-substrate node and edge featuresfor both subtypes of breast cancer. Two promising kinase-substrate edge features, CSNK1A1-NFATC3 and SRC-OCLN, were identified for more accurate prognostic prediction in ER-negative breast cancer patients.
