Objective To understand the trends of serum lipid concentration and the prevalence of dyslipidemia in adults aged 35 years and older, and to compare the regional differences in lipids. Methods Based on the data of Anhui Province in the Early Screening and Comprehensive Intervention Project for High-risk Groups of Cardiovascular Disease in China from 2017 to 2021, the change trend of blood lipid level and the prevalence rate of each region were plotted according to the year and different regions in the province, and the influencing factors of dyslipidemia were analyzed by multivariate regression model. Results The overall average levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) demonstrated an increase followed by a slight decrease with age annually, while the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglycerides (TG) fluctuated minimally. From 2017 to 2020, TC levels improved annually but increased again in 2021. Similar to TG and non-HDL-C, the average LDL-C level decreased annually from 2017 to 2019, while rebounded in 2020 and 2021 compared with the previous three years. In contrast, the HDL-C level continued to decline. With the exception of HDL-C, the overall blood lipid levels in the northern Anhui (n=31 716) were higher than those in the southern Anhui (n=50 681), and the lowest levels were found in the central Anhui (n=38 246). The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia (7.400%, 2 347/31 716), high LDL-C (5.228%, 1 658/31 716), low HDL-C (9.935%, 3 151/31 716), hypertriglyceridemia (18.212%, 5 776/31 716), and high non-HDL-C (5.789%, 1 836/31 716) were highest in the northern Anhui. Age, region, senior high school or above, smoking, drinking, systolic blood pressure, blood glucose, and body mass index were independent factors for dyslipidemia (P<0.05). Conclusion The blood lipid level and prevalence of dyslipidemia in adults aged ≥35 years in Anhui Province have not yet reached an ideal control level, especially in the northern part of Anhui Province where there is a need for enhanced awareness and timely intervention measures for lipid-related diseases to effectively extend the life expectancy of residents.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of hybutimibe monotherapy or in combination with atorvastatin in the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia. Methods: This was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, parallel-controlled phase Ⅲ clinical trial of patients with untreated primary hypercholesterolemia from 41 centers in China between August 2015 and April 2019. Patients were randomly assigned, at a ratio of 1∶1∶1∶1∶1∶1, to the atorvastatin 10 mg group (group A), hybutimibe 20 mg group (group B), hybutimibe 20 mg plus atorvastatin 10 mg group (group C), hybutimibe 10 mg group (group D), hybutimibe 10 mg plus atorvastatin 10 mg group (group E), and placebo group (group F). After a dietary run-in period for at least 4 weeks, all patients were administered orally once a day according to their groups. The treatment period was 12 weeks after the first dose of the study drug, and efficacy and safety were evaluated at weeks 2, 4, 8, and 12. After the treatment period, patients voluntarily entered the long-term safety evaluation period and continued the assigned treatment (those in group F were randomly assigned to group B or D), with 40 weeks' observation. The primary endpoint was the percent change in low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) from baseline at week 12. Secondary endpoints included the percent changes in high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride (TG), apolipoprotein B (Apo B) at week 12 and changes of the four above-mentioned lipid indicators at weeks 18, 24, 38, and 52. Safety was evaluated during the whole treatment period. Results: Totally, 727 patients were included in the treatment period with a mean age of (55.0±9.3) years old, including 253 males. No statistical differences were observed among the groups in demographics, comorbidities, and baseline blood lipid levels. At week 12, the percent changes in LDL-C were significantly different among groups A to F (all P<0.01). Compared to atorvastatin alone, hybutimibe combined with atorvastatin could further improve LDL-C, TG, and Apo B (all P<0.05). Furthermore, there was no significant difference in percent changes in LDL-C at week 12 between group C and group E (P=0.991 7). During the long-term evaluation period, there were intergroup statistical differences in changes of LDL-C, TG and Apo B at 18, 24, 38, and 52 weeks from baseline among the statins group (group A), hybutimibe group (groups B, D, and F), and combination group (groups C and E) (all P<0.01), with the best effect observed in the combination group. The incidence of adverse events was 64.2% in the statins group, 61.7% in the hybutimibe group, and 71.0% in the combination group during the long-term evaluation period. No treatment-related serious adverse events or adverse events leading to death occurred during the 52-week study period. Conclusions: Hybutimibe combined with atorvastatin showed confirmatory efficacy in patients with untreated primary hypercholesterolemia, which could further enhance the efficacy on the basis of atorvastatin monotherapy, with a good overall safety profile.

Chinese Journal of Stomatology 2023;58(3):265-270
Objective: To investigate the three-dimensional force in the maxillary dentition under different movement designs for molar distalization with clear aligners Methods: Three groups were designed: simultaneous movement group (simultaneous distalization of maxillary first and second molars), second molar movement group (distalization of maxillary second molars) and first molar movement group (distalization of maxillary first molars). Ten clear aligners were made in each group, and the displacement was designed to be 0.2 mm. A force sensing device was established to measure the three-dimensional force on the upper dentition with the clear aligner. The device contained a model of the maxillary dentition consisting of 14 teeth, each tooth connected to an individual sensor. After the clear aligner was fitted, the data of 14 sensors were collected and analyzed using computer analysis software. The moving teeth were taken as the target teeth, and the rest of the teeth were anchorage. The data of the three-dimensional force in the three groups in each tooth position were measured and compared. Results: The sagittal forces on the first and second molars in the simultaneous movement group were (5.61±0.94) and (5.81±1.08) N, respectively, which were significantly smaller than those of the target teeth in the same position in other groups (P<0.05). The second molars in the first molar movement group received a sagittal reaction force, which was (-6.73±1.99) N. The anterior teeth in the three groups were all subjected to sagittal reaction force, and the force value was in a range of (-3.33 to 0.46) N. In the coronal direction, the second premolars of the simultaneous movement group received the reaction force in the palatal direction, and the force value was (-2.17±1.06) N. The first molars in the second molar movement group were also subjected to palatal reaction force of (-1.99±0.70) N. The second molars and second premolars in the first molar movement group were also subjected to palatal reaction force, which were (-2.85±0.57) and (-1.85±0.74) N, respectively. Compared with the sagittal and coronal forces, the target teeth and anchorage teeth in the three groups were less stressed in the vertical direction. Conclusions: The first and second molars distalized simultaneously, the correction force in the sagittal direction was relatively small. When first molar was moved distally alone, a greater reaction force in the sagittal direction was exerted on the second molar. Buccal displacement of the adjacent anchorage teeth should be designed to counteract the palatal reaction force on the anchorage teeth as the molars moved distally.

Objective:To explore the repairing effects of 3D-printed nano-β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) scaffolds loaded with vancomycin and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) for seawater -soaked tibial bone defects in rabbits. Methods:A total of 27 male New Zealand White rabbits were assigned to the normal group using a random number table method, with each group consisting of 9 rabbits. The rabbit tibial bone defect model was created using the osteotomy surgical method. Eight hours after operation, the wounds in the control group and seawater group were immersed in seawater for 2 hours, and those in the normal group were not immersed. After an observation period of 5-7 days, no significant redness or purulent discharge was observed in the wound appearance, then debridement was performed followed by corresponding implantations: the control group with gelatin sponges loaded with vancomycin and BMP-2, and the other two groups with 3D-printed nano-β-TCP scaffolds loaded with vancomycin and BMP-2. After filling the bone defects with the respective materials, all groups underwent layer-by-layer suturing of the wound, followed by disinfection with iodine and injection of gentamicin to prevent infection. The affected limbs were then immobilized using a plaster cast. The affected limbs were imaged using anteroposterior X-ray at 4, 8 and 16 weeks after operation, and the repair effects were evaluated using the Lane-Sandhu X-ray scoring system. At 16 weeks after operation, the bone defect tissues were collected for HE staining to observe bone tissue growth. Results:At 4 weeks after operation, the Lane-Sandhu X-ray score in the control group was significantly lower than that in the normal group [(2.8±1.1)points vs. (1.1±0.9)points] ( P<0.05), and that in the seawater group [(2.2±1.0)points] was not significantly different from those in the other two groups (all P>0.05). At 8 weeks after operation, the seawater group [(6.1±0.9)points] and the control group [(2.8±1.0)points] exhibited lower Lane-Sandhu X-ray score compared to the normal group [(8.2±1.0)points] (all P<0.05), and the seawater group showed a higher score compared to the control group ( P<0.05). At 16 weeks after operation, the control group [(3.8±1.0)points] exhibited a lower Lane-Sandhu X-ray score compared to the normal group [(10.0±1.3)points] and the seawater group [(9.3±1.2)points] (all P<0.05), while no significant difference was noted between the latter two ( P>0.05). At 16 weeks after operation, histological observations revealed varying degrees of bone tissue formation in three groups, with the normal group showing the best bone defect repair effect, followed by the seawater group. Conclusion:The 3D-printed nano-β-TCP scaffolds loaded with vancomycin and BMP-2 are effective for the treatment of seawater -soaked bone defects, which can promote bone tissue repair.

Neuroscience Bulletin 2023;39(12):1749-1761
Integrating multisensory inputs to generate accurate perception and guide behavior is among the most critical functions of the brain. Subcortical regions such as the amygdala are involved in sensory processing including vision and audition, yet their roles in multisensory integration remain unclear. In this study, we systematically investigated the function of neurons in the amygdala and adjacent regions in integrating audiovisual sensory inputs using a semi-chronic multi-electrode array and multiple combinations of audiovisual stimuli. From a sample of 332 neurons, we showed the diverse response patterns to audiovisual stimuli and the neural characteristics of bimodal over unimodal modulation, which could be classified into four types with differentiated regional origins. Using the hierarchical clustering method, neurons were further clustered into five groups and associated with different integrating functions and sub-regions. Finally, regions distinguishing congruent and incongruent bimodal sensory inputs were identified. Overall, visual processing dominates audiovisual integration in the amygdala and adjacent regions. Our findings shed new light on the neural mechanisms of multisensory integration in the primate brain.

Biomedical and Environmental Sciences 2023;36(7):604-613
OBJECTIVE:
Campylobacter jejuni NCTC11168 is commonly used as a standard strain for flagellar biosynthesis research. In this report, two distinguished phenotypic isolates (CJ1Z, flhA mutant strain, lawn; CJ2S, flhA complemented strain, normal colony) appeared during laboratory passages for NCTC11168.
METHODS:
Phenotypic assessments, including motility plates, transmission electron microscopy, biofilm formation assay, autoagglutination assay, and genome re-sequencing for these two isolates (CJ1Z, flhA mutant strain; CJ2S, flhA complemented strain) were carried out in this study.
RESULTS:
Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the flagellum was lost in CJ1Z. Phenotypic assessments and genome sequencing of the two isolates were performed in this study. The capacity for biofilm formation, colony auto-agglutination, and isolate motility was reduced in the mutant CJ1Z. Comparative genomic analysis indicated a unique native nucleotide insertion in flhA (nt, 2154) that caused the I719Y and I720Y mutations and early truncation in flhA.
CONCLUSION
FlhA has been found to influence the expression of flagella in C. jejuni. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to describe the function of the C-terminal of this protein.
