BACKGROUND:The extracellular-regulated protein kinase 5(ERK5)signaling protein is essential for the survival of organisms, and resveratrol can promote osteoblast proliferation through various pathways. However, whether resveratrol can regulate osteoblast function through the ERK5 signaling protein needs further verification. OBJECTIVE:To explore the regulatory effect of ERK5 on the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells and related secreted proteins, and to further verify whether resveratrol can complete the above process by activating ERK5. METHODS:Mouse MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts were treated with complete culture medium,XMD8-92(an ERK5 inhibitor),epidermal growth factor(an ERK5 activator),resveratrol alone,XMD8-92+EGF,and resveratrol+XMD8-92,respectively.Western blot assay was used to detect the expression of ERK5 and p-ERK5 proteins,proliferation-related proteins Cyclin D1,CDK4 and PCNA,and osteoblast-secreted proteins osteoprotegerin and receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand in MC3T3-E1 cells of each group. The fluorescence intensity of ERK5,osteoprotegerin and receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand in each group was detected by cell immunofluorescence staining, and cell proliferation was detected by EdU staining, respectively. The appropriate concentration and time of resveratrol intervention in MC3T3-E1 cells were determined by cell morphology observation and cell counting kit-8 assay. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The activation of ERK5 signaling protein could effectively promote the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells,up-regulate the osteoprotegerin/receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand ratio. The appropriate concentration and time for resveratrol intervention in MC3T3-E1 cells was 5 μmol/L and 24 hours, respectively.Resveratrol could activate ERK5 signaling protein, thereby promoting osteoblast proliferation and up-regulating the osteoprotegerin/RANKL ratio. All these results indicate that resveratrol can promote the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells and up-regulate the osteoprotegerin/RANKL ratio by activating the ERK5 signaling protein.

ObjectiveTo identify the characteristic exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in patients after abdominal surgery. MethodsThis study prospectively enrolled 76 patients with tracheal intubation who were transferred to intensive care unit (ICU) after abdominal surgery at Peking University People's Hospital between December 10, 2022 and June 30, 2023. The patients' basic information was collected during their perioperative period, and their exhaled VOCs were collected within 24 hours after their admission to the ICU, and then analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). According to whether PPCs occurred 24 hours after surgery, the patients were divided into PPCs group (n=44) and non-PPCs group (n=32), and the differences of VOCs were compared between the two groups. Lasso regression analysis was used to screen the valuable variables of VOCs, and Logistics regression analysis to determine the characteristic VOCs associated with the occurrence of PPCs. ResultsAmong the 76 patients, 44 had PPCs and 32 had no PPCs. Lasso regression analysis screened 4 PPCs-related compounds from exhaled VOCs of two groups for further analysis and Logistics regression analysis showed that the increase of 1-Hexadecanol content in exhaled breath was significantly correlated with the occurrence of PPCs (OR: 1.000, P=0.002). ConclusionThis study indicated that the increased content of 1-Hexadecanol in patients' exhaled breath after abdominal surgery may be associated with the occurrence of PPCs.

OBJECTIVE:
This study aimed to explore the association between body mass index (BMI) and mortality based on the 10-year population-based multicenter prospective study.
METHODS:
A general population-based multicenter prospective study was conducted at four sites in rural China between 2013 and 2023. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic spline analyses were used to assess the association between BMI and mortality. Stratified analyses were performed based on the individual characteristics of the participants.
RESULTS:
Overall, 19,107 participants with a sum of 163,095 person-years were included and 1,910 participants died. The underweight (< 18.5 kg/m 2) presented an increase in all-cause mortality (adjusted hazards ratio [ aHR] = 2.00, 95% confidence interval [ CI]: 1.66-2.41), while overweight (≥ 24.0 to < 28.0 kg/m 2) and obesity (≥ 28.0 kg/m 2) presented a decrease with an aHR of 0.61 (95% CI: 0.52-0.73) and 0.51 (95% CI: 0.37-0.70), respectively. Overweight ( aHR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.67-0.86) and mild obesity ( aHR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.59-0.87) had a positive impact on mortality in people older than 60 years. All-cause mortality decreased rapidly until reaching a BMI of 25.7 kg/m 2 ( aHR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.92-0.98) and increased slightly above that value, indicating a U-shaped association. The beneficial impact of being overweight on mortality was robust in most subgroups and sensitivity analyses.
CONCLUSION
This study provides additional evidence that overweight and mild obesity may be inversely related to the risk of death in individuals older than 60 years. Therefore, it is essential to consider age differences when formulating health and weight management strategies.

Chinese Journal of Preventive Medicine 2025;59(2):138-143
The main health problems faced by children and adolescents in China are constantly changing. Myopia, overweight and obesity, abnormal spinal curvature, and mental health issues have become the main health problems for children and adolescents. However, multidimensional health problems such as infectious diseases, chronic non-communicable diseases and injuries still coexist and present regional imbalances. Since these coexisting health problems usually have common behavioral and environmental factors, implementing joint prevention works for children and adolescents could improve the efficiency of monitoring and intervention of multimorbidity among students. School health standards are an important component of China′s school health regulations and a crucial technical basis for implementing various school health laws and regulations. Carrying out high-quality revision, preliminary research, implementation evaluation, and promotion of school health standards could provide important technical support for monitoring, comprehensive intervention, and evaluation of common diseases among students, implementing the policy of joint prevention of multimorbidity of common diseases among students, and promoting the high-quality development of disease prevention and control in the field of school health in the new era.

Aerosol-assisted plasma amplification laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS)was employed for phosphorus detection in water. To address the multivariate coupling effects in LIBS and nebulization sampling system,an orthogonal experiment was employed to systematically optimize the key experimental parameters.Using the orthogonal experimental design, the parametric effects of laser energy(output voltage),signal acquisition delay, liquid velocity, and gas velocity on the signal to background ratio(SBR)of P I 213.618 nm were evaluated, and the optimal conditions were achieved, including laser energy of 86 mJ,delay time of 3 μs,gas velocity of 1.05 mL/min,and liquid velocity of 60 μL/min,which were in agreement with the control-variable optimization results. Moreover, the SBR response trends at P I 213.618 nm with all experimental parameters was strong in consistency with control-variable optimization results, which demonstrated the validity of the orthogonal array experimental design. This study established an efficient and accurate parameter optimization methodology for complex LIBS systems, significantly advancing the application of LIBS in environmental monitoring.
