Background:
We investigated whether nutritional intake is associated with physical activity (PA) and handgrip strength (HGS) in individuals with airflow limitation.
Methods:
This study analyzed data from the 2014 and 2016 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We assessed total protein intake (g/day), caloric intake (kcal/day), and other nutritional intakes, using a 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire. HGS was measured three times for each hand using a digital grip strength dynamometer, and PA was assessed as health-enhancing PA. Airflow limitation was defined as a forced expiratory volume/forced vital capacity ratio of 0.7 in individuals over 40 years of age. Participants were categorized into groups based on their PA levels and HGS measurements: active aerobic PA vs. non-active aerobic PA, and normal HGS vs. low HGS.
Results:
Among the 622 individuals with airflow limitation, those involved in active aerobic PA and those with higher HGS had notably higher total food, calorie, water, protein, and lipid intake. The correlations between protein and caloric intake with HGS were strong (correlation coefficients=0.344 and 0.346, respectively). The forest plots show that higher intakes of food, water, calories, protein, and lipids are positively associated with active aerobic PA, while higher intakes of these nutrients are inversely associated with low HGS. However, in the multivariate logistic regression analysis, no significant associations were observed between nutritional intake and active aerobic PA or HGS.
Conclusion
Nutritional intake was found to not be an independent factor associated with PA and HGS. However, the observed correlations suggest potential indirect effects that warrant further investigation.

6.Presence and diversity of free-living amoebae and their potential application as water quality indicators

Free-living amoebae (FLA) are found in diverse environments, such as soils, rivers, and seas. Hence, they can be used as bioindicators to assess the water quality based solely on their presence. In this study, we determined the presence of FLA in river water by filtering water samples collected from various sites and culturing the resulting filtrates. FLA were detected in all the water samples with varying quality grades (Grades Ι-V). The significant increase in the size of the amoebae population with the deterioration in the water quality. Monoxenic cultures of the amoebae were performed, and genomic DNAs were isolated, among which 18S rDNAs were sequenced to identify the amoeba species. Of the 12 species identified, 10 belonged to the Acanthamoeba genus; of the remaining 2 species, one was identified as Vannella croatica and the other as a species of Vermamoeba. Acanthamoeba was detected in samples with Grades Ι to VI quality, whereas the Vermamoeba species was present only in Grade Ι water. V. croatica was found exclusively in water with Grade ΙΙ quality. Following morphological observations, genomic DNA was sequenced using 16S rDNA to determine whether the species of Acanthamoeba harbored endosymbionts. Most of the isolated Acanthamoeba contained endosymbionts, among which 4 species of endogenous bacteria were identified and examined using transmission electron microscopy. This study provides evidence that the distribution of amoebae other than Acanthamoeba may be associated with water quality. However, further confirmation will be required based on accurate water quality ratings and assessments using a more diverse range of FLA.
7.Perception of Long-Term Oxygen Therapyfor Chronic Lung Diseases May Affect Poor Adherence in Korea

Background:
Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) improves the survival of patients with hypoxemia due to chronic respiratory diseases. The clinical outcomes of LTOT are strongly associated with patient adherence. To improve the adherence of patients, physicians have focused on the efficacy of LTOT. However, poor adherence may stem from patients’ perceptions of LTOT. Herein we evaluated patients’ perceptions of LTOT affecting adherence.
Methods:
We conducted a cross-sectional survey study using descriptive, open, and closed-ended questionnaire. Patients using oxygen therapy (OT) or requiring it but avoiding OT responded to the questionnaires at three university hospitals.
Results:
Seventy-nine patients responded to the questionnaires. The number of patients using home and portable OT was 69 (93%) and 37 (46.3%), respectively. Patients with good adherence were 22 (30.1%). Among patients with good adherence, 90.9% used oxygen according to physicians’ prescriptions whereas only 37.3% of those with poor adherence followed physicians’ prescriptions (p<0.01). The reasons for avoiding using home OT were fear of permanent use (50%), unwanted attention (40%), and lack of symptoms (40%). They avoided portable OT because of unwanted attention (39%), heaviness (31.7%), and lack of symptoms (21.6%).
Conclusion
Patients on LTOT had the perception of the misunderstanding the effects of OT and of psychosocial barriers to initiate or use LTOT. Considering these findings, health professionals need to provide effective education on the purpose of LTOT to improve patient adherence to OT and provide sufficient support for the management of psychosocial barriers in patients using LTOT.
8.Impact of Alcohol Consumption on Quality of Life, Depressive Mood and Metabolic Syndrome in Obstructive Lung Disease Patients: Analysis of Data from Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2014 and 2016

Background:
The objective of this study was to investigate whether alcohol consumption might affect the quality of life (QOL), depressive mood, and metabolic syndrome in patients with obstructive lung disease (OLD).
Methods:
Data were obtained from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2014 and 2016. OLD was defined as spirometry of forced expiratory volume in 1 second/forced vital capacity <0.7 in those aged more than 40 years. QOL was evaluated using the European Quality of Life Questionnaire-5D (EQ-5D) index. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to assess the severity of depressive mood. Alcohol consumption was based on a history of alcohol ingestion during the previous month.
Results:
A total of 984 participants with OLD (695 males, 289 females, age 65.8±9.7 years) were enrolled. The EQ-5D index was significantly higher in alcohol drinkers (n=525) than in non-alcohol drinkers (n=459) (0.94±0.11 vs. 0.91±0.13, p=0.002). PHQ- 9 scores were considerably lower in alcohol drinkers than in non-alcohol drinkers (2.15±3.57 vs. 2.78±4.13, p=0.013). However, multiple logistic regression analysis showed that alcohol consumption was not associated with EQ-5D index or PHQ-9 score. Body mass index ≥25 kg/m2, triglyceride ≥150 mg/dL, high-density lipoprotein <40 mg/dL in men and <50 mg/dL in women, and blood pressure ≥130/85 mm Hg were significantly more common in alcohol drinkers than in non-alcohol drinkers (all p<0.05).
Conclusion
Alcohol consumption did not change the QOL or depressive mood of OLD patients. However, metabolic syndrome-related factors were more common in alcohol drinkers than in non-alcohol drinkers.
9.Factors influencing burnout among Korean nurses caring for patients with COVID-19: a cross-sectional study

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of fatigue, social support, and burnout among nurses caring for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, and to identify factors that affect burnout.
Methods:
Data were collected from 115 nurses who were caring for COVID-19 patients in Gyeonggi Province and Seoul from December 2021 to February 2022.
Results:
The mean scores for fatigue, social support, and burnout were 63.31 ± 11.48 (of 95), 48.34 ± 6.97 (of 60), and 81.90 ± 15.50 (of 132) points, respectively. The level of burnout of nurses caring for patients with COVID-19 was high. Fatigue (β = .49, p < .001) and social support (β = -.21, p = .012) were significantly associated with burnout.
Conclusion
Higher levels of fatigue and lower levels of social support were associated with higher levels of burnout. Reducing fatigue among nurses and strengthening their social support can be a strategy to reduce nurse burnout.
10.Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Activities of Rumex acetosa

Rumex acetosa is a folk medicine for gastritis and gastric ulcers. In our previous study, the ethanol extract of R. acetosa inhibited gastric ulcers and protected gastric tissue in mice induced with HCl/ethanol from gastric ulcers. Moreover, we isolated six anthraquinone compounds from this plant and evaluated their antiHelicobacter pylori activity. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify further the related antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities and the bioactive constituents. Five fractions of n-hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and aqueous fractions were obtained from the total ethanolic extract from whole parts of R. acetosa that had exhibited antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The ethyl acetate fraction contained the highest total phenol and flavonoid contents among the five fractions and exhibited the most potent antioxidant effect on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay. Among the six compounds, emodin showed the most potent antioxidant activity. Next, we induced inflammation in the LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cell line. The methylene chloride fraction showed the strongest reducing nitric oxide production activity among the fractions. In addition, the methylene chloride fraction suppressed the phosphorylation of ERK and JNK, and the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 in a dose-dependent manner. These physiological activities of the fraction and the compounds could be involved in the anti-gastric ulcer activity of R. acetosa
