1.Comparative analysis of body mass index and obesity-related anthropometric indices for mortality prediction: a study of the Namwon and Dong-gu cohort in Korea

OBJECTIVES:
This study investigated the associations between several obesity-related anthropometric indices and mortality in middle-aged and elderly populations to compare the indices’ predictive ability with that of the body mass index (BMI).
METHODS:
We analyzed data on 12 indices calculated from 19,805 community-based cohort participants (average age, 63.27 years; median follow-up, 13.49 years). Each index was calculated using directly measured values of height, weight, waist circumference (WC), and hip circumference (HC). We calculated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each index using Cox regression and evaluated mortality prediction with the Harrell concordance index (c-index).
RESULTS:
Adding anthropometric indices to the basic mortality model (c-index, 0.7723; 95% CI, 0.7647 to 0.7799) significantly increased the predictive power of BMI (c-index, 0.7735; 95% CI, 0.7659 to 0.7811), a body shape index (ABSI; c-index, 0.7735; 95% CI, 0.7659 to 0.7810), weight-adjusted waist index (WWI; c-index, 0.7731; 95% CI, 0.7656 to 0.7807), and waist to hip index (WHI; c-index, 0.7733; 95% CI, 0.7657 to 0.7809). The differences between the BMI model and the other 3 models were not statistically significant.
CONCLUSIONS
In predicting all-cause mortality, the ABSI, WWI, and WHI models based on WC or HC had stronger predictive power than conventional risk factors but were not significantly different from the BMI model.
2.Empowering Palliative Wound Care in Long-Term Care Facilities: A Comprehensive Nursing Competency for Palliative Wound Care

Purpose:
The importance of wound care as a part of end-of-life care is rising due to aging populations and increased chronic disease prevalence. This study developed a comprehensive competency framework on palliative wound care for nursing staff within long-term care facilities (LTCFs).
Methods:
The study utilized a three-phased exploratory methods approach involving topic modeling, expert interviews, and a Delphi survey.
Results:
Four key competencies emerged regarding nursing competency for palliative wound care in LTCFs: (1) building partnerships with patients and caregivers, (2) an individual approach to wound treatment based on understanding the patient's situation, (3) a holistic approach through shared information and cooperative decision-making, and (4) integration of wound management knowledge within end-of-life care.
Conclusion
This framework supports developing targeted training programs for nurses to improve the quality of life for terminally ill patients in LTCFs.
3.Surgical Challenges for WIOL-CF® Dislocation without Capsular Bag Complex after Trauma: A Case Report

Purpose:
To present a case of post-traumatic dislocation of the WIOL-CF® accommodating intraocular lens (IOL), composed of hydrogel material and featuring a full-optic body design, in a vitrectomized eye, highlighting considerations for surgical correction.Case summary: A 54-year-old man with a history of left-eye WIOL-CF® implantation and vitrectomy experienced sudden onset of vision deterioration in the left eye following trauma. The IOL was dislocated due to posterior capsule rupture, with the anterior capsulorhexis margin intact. The support-less circular design and material properties made it challenging to grasp the dislocated IOL in one attempt, and there was a risk of tearing when using intraocular forceps and an extrusion needle.
Conclusions
The case of WIOL-CF® dislocation without the capsular bag emphasizes the importance of considering the structural vulnerability and propensity for fragmentation of the IOL during removal. Adequate corneal incision size, active utilization of perfluorocarbon liquid to approximate the IOL to the anterior chamber, and gentle removal in one attempt without applying excessive force are crucial steps in the removal of a dislocated IOL.

8.Effects of Short-term Repeated Sprint Exercise Training and Moderate Intensity Continuous Exercise Training on Vascular Function in Healthy Young Adults

Purpose:
Moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) improves exercise capacity with vascular benefits, but time constraints hinder consistent adherence. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has emerged as a time-efficient alternative, with repeated sprint training (RST) being the shortest format. We hypothesized that RST would be as effective as MICT in improving vascular function and exercise capacity in young adults.
Methods:
Twenty-three adults (mean age, 26.2±3.8 years) were randomly assigned to either RST or MICT. RST involved 20 sets of 4-second cycling sprints followed by 30-second active recovery, totaling 11 minutes. MICT consisted of 30-minute cycling at 50% to 60% of heart rate reserve. Vascular function evaluated via brachial artery flow-mediated dilation. Exercise capacity (maximum oxygen uptake, total exercise load test time) and anaerobic capacity (maximum power, anaerobic threshold) were measured using maximum exercise tests. These variables were measured befre and after a 6-week training.
Results:
Both groups showed comparable improvements in flow-mediated dilation (p< 0.05). Maximum oxygen intake slightly improved, while total exercise time significantly increased for both (p< 0.05). Anaerobic threshold unchanged, while maximum power improved (p< 0.05).
Conclusion
These findings underscore that RST is a time-efficient exercise strategy, which improves vascular function and exercise capacity as effectively as MICT in young adults.
