1.Research progress on the role of nap in promoting memory development in preschool children
Chinese Journal of School Health 2026;47(1):149-152
Abstract
To understand the promoting effects of napping—a form of daytime short rest on memory development in preschool children, this article provides an in depth analysis of the differential mechanisms. Through the analysis of the differential promotion mechanisms of napping on semantic memory, episodic memory, and motor memory of preschool children, the paper deeply explores the intrinsic relationship between napping and the memory development of preschool children, and combs through the main influencing factors including physiological states, napping habits, napping conditions, and sociocultural backgrounds, aiming to provide a theoretical basis for formulating napping arrangements and strategies suitable for preschool children.

Objective To explore whether there is a causal relationship between intestinal flora and esophageal cancer. Methods Summary statistics of intestinal flora and esophageal cancer were obtained from the Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) database. Five methods, including inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median estimation, Mendelian randomization (MR)-Egger regression, single mode, and weighted mode, were used for analysis, with IVW as the main analysis method. Sensitivity analysis was used to evaluate the reliability of MR results. Results In the IVW method, Oxalobacteraceae [OR=1.001, 95%CI (1.000, 1.002), P=0.023], Faecalibacterium [OR=1.001, 95%CI (1.000, 1.002), P=0.028], Senegalimassilia [OR=1.002, 95%CI (1.000, 1.003), P=0.006] and Veillonella [OR=1.001, 95%CI (1.000, 1.002), P=0.018] were positively correlated with esophageal cancer, while Burkholderiales [OR=0.999, 95%CI (0.998, 1.000), P=0.002], Eubacterium oxidoreducens [OR=0.998, 95%CI (0.997, 0.999), P=0.038], Romboutsia [OR=0.999, 95%CI (0.998, 1.000), P=0.048] and Turicibacter [OR=0.998, 95%CI (0.997, 0.999), P=0.013] were negatively correlated with esophageal cancer. Sensitivity analysis showed no evidence of heterogeneity, horizontal pleiotropy and reverse causality. Conclusion Oxalobacteraceae, Faecalibacterium, Senegalimassilia and Veillonella increase the risk of esophageal cancer, while Burkholderiales, Eubacterium oxidoreducens, Romboutsia and Turicibacter decrease the risk of esophageal cancer. Further studies are needed to explore how these bacteria affect the progression of esophageal cancer.

Monotropein is a compound classified into iridoid which is found in herbaceous plants Morindae officinalis. It possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-osteoarthritic activities. Previous study indicates that monotropein may have the potential to combat cardiovascular disease, although the related mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we constructed the model of atherosclerosis by oxidized low density lipoprotein-induced vascular smooth muscle cells and LDLR –/–mice given high-fat diet to investigate the effects of monotropein on atherosclerosis. Our results showed that monotropein treatment significantly reduced the area of atherosclerotic plaques and necrotic cores in mice, inhibited the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells, and reduced inflammatory responses and oxidative stress, which in turn alleviated atherosclerosis. In addition, we found that monotropein reduced the expression levels of P-NF-κB and P-AP-1. In conclusion, our data suggest that monotropein inhibited the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells by mediating the activity of NF-κB, AP-1, reducing the level of inflammation and oxidative stress, and thus resisting the development of atherosclerosis. These findings demonstrate the efficacious therapeutic impact of monotropein on atherosclerosis and elucidate its specific target.

ObjectiveThis study aims to identify potential risk factors, establish a nomogram prediction model and propose intervention strategies for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in late pregnancy. MethodsQuestionnaire surveys and routine blood tests were performed on pregnant women who received regular antenatal check-ups at Yangzhou Maternal and Child Health Hospital from July 2022 to December 2023. Of the 500 cases enrolled, 482 completed the trial and were divided into IDA and non-IDA groups based on the presence of IDA in the third trimester. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression were employed to identify risk factors for IDA, while R software was used to construct a nomogram prediction model. ResultsThe incidence of IDA in late pregnancy was 19.92% (96/482). Univariate analysis revealed significant associations between IDA in late pregnancy and factors such as economic independence, preconception body mass index (BMI), number of pregnancies, and regular iron supplementation during pregnancy (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression showed that economic independence (P=0.031, OR=0.583) and regular iron supplementation during pregnancy (P<0.001, OR=5.337) were protective factors against IDA. Conversely, a low preconception BMI (P=0.021, OR=2.375) and three or more pregnancies (P=0.015, OR=2.253) emerged as significant risk factors. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis demonstrated that the area under the curve (AUC) for the nomogram predicting IDA was 0.84, with an optimal cutoff value of -1.481, a sensitivity of 81.2% and a specificity of 75.1%. ConclusionsThe incidence of IDA in late pregnancy is quite high. A low preconception BMI and three or more pregnancies are risk factors, while economic independence and regular iron supplementation are protective factors. These insights have enabled the construction of a prediction model, which, in turn, could provide guidance for prediction and treatment of IDA in late pregnancy.

Chinese Journal of School Health 2025;46(7):1019-1022
Objective:
To investigate the timing of puberty onset among primary school students, so as to provide the reference data for early identification of children with suspected precocious puberty.
Methods:
A study was conducted from October 23 to November 7, 2023, involving 10 225 students(5 412 boys, 4 813 girls) from grade 1 to 6 of four campuses in Meiling Primary School in Yangzhou. Breast development in girls and external genitalia in boys was assessed via visual inspection and palpation, with pubertal stages classified using the Tanner staging method. Puberty onset timing was determined based on age/sex reference values from Chinese Han children s pubertal milestone indicators. Descriptive analysis was performed using SPSS 26.0.
Results:
The median age for testicular volume reaching 4 mL in boys was 10.49 years, while the median age for breast development onset in girls was 9.70 years. Among boys with testicular volume ≥4 mL, 16.6%( n =217) were identified as suspected early puberty cases; among girls with Tanner stage Ⅱ and Ⅲ, 123(9.4%) and 165(18.5%) showed earlier breast development than the reference range. Overall, 14.4% of students exhibited suspected precocious puberty.
Conclusion
The onset age of puberty for girls in primary schools of Yangzhou aligns with findings from other regions, while boys show earlier pubertal initiation.
