OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of intubation with electromyographic (EMG) endotracheal tubes versus conventional wire-reinforced (CWR) tubes on the incidence of postoperative sore throat (POST) in patients undergoing thyroidectomy under general anesthesia and identify the risk factors for POST. METHODS: We retrospectively collected the clinical data from a cohort of 245 patients undergoing elective thyroid surgery under general anesthesia at the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University between October, 2024 and March, 2025. Patients received intubation with either EMG endotracheal tubes (n=100) or CWR tubes (n=145) during the operation, and the incidences of POST and other postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. Propensity score matching (PSM) was applied to adjust for the baseline differences, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent risk factors for POST. RESULTS: Comparisons of the baseline data revealed significant differences between the two groups (P<0.05). After PSM, 90 patients in EMG group and 75 in CWR group were included in the final analysis with matching baseline characteristics (P>0.05). Post-matching analysis showed that the EMG group had a shorter operative time (P=0.002) but a higher incidence of POST (P=0.001). Multivariate logistic regression identified the use of EMG tubes (OR=17.50, 95% CI: 2.25-136.03, P<0.01) as an independent risk factor for POST. CONCLUSIONS Intubation with EMG endotracheal tubes can shorten the operative time and allow recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring during thyroidectomy under general anesthesia, but their structural design may increase the risk of POST. Clinical decisions should be made to balance nerve protection and postoperative patient comfort by selecting appropriate tube types and optimizing intubation strategies to enhance perioperative outcomes.

Objective: To explore the current status of hyperopic reserve and its related factors among non-myopia preschool and primary school students aged 5 to 12 years in Guangdong Province, so as to provide a basis for formulating intervention strategies for the pre myopia stage of children. Methods: From October to December 2023, by using stratified cluster random sampling method, a survey on hyperopic reserve among preschool children and primary school students in Guangdong were conducted. And a total of 10 567 children from the senior class of kindergarten to the sixth grade of primary school who completed autorefraction measurements with and without cycloplegia and the questionnaire survey were included in the study. The prevalence characteristics of low hyperopic reserve among non-myopia children were analyzed, and multivariable Logistic regression was used to analyze the related factors. Results: The prevalence rate of low hyperopic reserve among 8 790 non-myopia children was 62.4%. The average spherical equivalent (SE) for children aged 5 to 12 years was 0.88 (0.25, 1.25)D, decreasing from 1.13 ( 0.75 , 1.50)D in senior kindergarten to -1.00 (-2.50, 0.38)D in sixth grade, with the difference was statistically significant ( H=2 475.3, P <0.01). Multivariable Logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for confounders including gender, urban and rural, and grade, revealed that parental myopia was a risk factor for low hyperopic reserve in the preschool stage (one parent with myopia: OR=1.62, 95%CI =1.35-1.93; both parents with myopia: OR=2.05, 95%CI = 1.66 -2.55); in the lower primary school stage, parental myopia (one parent with myopia: OR=1.46, 95%CI =1.27-1.68; both parents with myopia: OR=1.58, 95%CI =1.33-1.89), frequently or always reading or using electronic screens while lying down or on one s stomach ( OR=1.43, 95%CI =1.13-1.81), and never or occasionally maintaining a viewing distance of over 3 meters when watching TV/playing video games ( OR=1.34, 95%CI =1.04-1.72) were risk factors; in the higher primary school stage, failing to take a break every hour during near work ( OR=1.79, 95%CI =1.16-2.75) was a risk factor (all P <0.05). Conclusions The emmetropization of children aged 5-12 years in Guangdong Province is accelerated, and non-myopia children generally exhibit insufficient hyperopic reserve. The contributing factors for insufficient hyperopia reserve in non-myopia children vary across different educational stages, necessitating targeted precision interventions.

Objective: To analyze the correlation between refractive errors and physical development indicators among primary school students aged 6 to 9, so as to provide a scientific basis for the development of effective prevention and control measures. Methods: A stratified cluster random sampling method was used to recruit 2 833 elementary school students aged 6 to 9 from Guangdong Province for vision screening, ocular biometry, and physical examinations in Octorber, 2020. The Chi square test, t-test, and ANOVA were employed to compare myopia rates and indicator values across different groups. Multiple linear regression models were used to analyze the correlations between height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) with refractive development indicators. Results: The screening myopia rate among primary school students aged 6 to 9 was 16.7%, and the myopia rate increased with age ( χ 2= 51.58 , P <0.01). The height and weight of the myopic group [(126.96±7.41)cm, (26.59±6.45)kg] were higher than those of the non myopic group [(124.76±7.77)cm, (25.42±5.87)kg] ( t =5.84, 3.65, P <0.01). The mean values of spherical equivalent (SE), axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and AL/corneal curvature radius (CR) ratio for students aged 6 to 9 were (-0.17±1.04)D, (22.96±0.78)mm, (3.38±0.24)mm, and (2.95±0.08), respectively, with statistically significant differences across different age and myopia severity groups ( t =37.08, 119.20, 41.54, 133.60; 935.30, 184.10, 73.95, 498.50, P < 0.01). After adjusting for gender, age, and residence, the multiple linear regression model showed that height was positively correlated with AL and CR, weight was positively correlated with ACD, and BMI was positively correlated with AL and ACD ( β = 0.191 , 0.070, 0.035, 0.013, 0.007, P <0.05). When stratified by myopia status, results for the non-myopic group were similar to the overall results, whereas in the myopic group, the correlations between height, BMI, and AL were not statistically significant ( P > 0.05). Conclusions Among primary school students aged 6 to 9, height and BMI are positively correlated with AL in the non myopic group but no similar correlation is observed in the myopic group, indicating that factors other than physical development, such as environmental and behavioral factors, should be considered for their impact on refractive development.

Objective To analyze and summarize the clinical presentation of spontaneous and secondary intracranial hypotension syndrome(IHS).Methods Patients diagnosed with spontaneous or secondary IHS from September 2022 to May 2023 were retrospectively analyzed.The clinical data,imaging features,treatment methods and prognosis were collected.The correlation between intracranial pressure values and clinical characteristics of the patients was statistically analyzed.Results A total of 30 patients were enrolled,and the proportion of spontaneous and secondary IHS was 63%(19 cases)and 37%(11 cases),respectively.In terms of clinical features,orthostatic headache was the most common type(29 cases,96.7%)and most commonly involved occipital region(12 cases,40.0%),followed by frontoparietal region(9 cases,30.0%).Among the brain imaging features,dural enhancement was the most common(17 cases,56.7%).According to CT angiography of spinal cord findings,cerebrospinal fluid leakage is one of the most common location of cervical spine segments(10 cases),and on the thoracic segments(9 cases),followed by the thoracic segments(4 cases)and lumbar segments(4 cases).After conservative treatment and surgical treatment,the total effective rate was 90%.Conclusion Orthostatic headache and cranial MRI"dural enhancement"have strong indication on the definitive diagnosis of IHS.CT myelography is helpful to precisely localize the site of cerebrospinal fluid leakage.Targeted epidural blood patch therapy is an effective method to cure IHS when conservative treatment is ineffective.

Metabolic syndrome is a group of clinical syndromes characterized by overweight or obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, impaired glucose metabolism, and insulin resistance.It is a group of metabolic associated risk factors.Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is one of the most common diseases nowadays, and its risk factors include obesity, diabetes, and abnormal blood lipid.In recent years, the relationship between LDH and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been valued by scholars.Although some studies have suggested that MetS is related to LDH, the study of the correlation between MetS and LDH at home and abroad is relatively rare.To explore the possibility of using MetS for the prevention and control of LDH, this paper reviews the research progress of the relationship among MetS, the various components, and LDH.

Objective: To investigate the effect of elective cesarean section (ECS) on infants' developmental behaviors. Methods: A total of 3 474 pregnant women living in Ma'anshan more than 6 months and accepting obstetric examination in Ma'anshan Maternal and Child Care Center were recruited from May 2013 to September 2014. Excluding participants with pregnancy termination (162), twin pregnancy (39), assisted delivery (14), emergency cesarean section (76) and unclear delivery mode (141), 3 042 pair of mother and infant entered the final analysis. Information of maternal basic demographic characteristics, pregnancy histories, pregnancy life style and pregnancy-related diseases were collected by using self-complied Maternal and Child Health Questionnaire. Information of infants' general condition and delivery modes were acquired from obstetric record. The Ages and Stages Questionnaires-third edition was used to assess infants' communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving and person-social function, which was completed at age of 6 months old and 18 months old, respectively. And multi-factor non-conditional logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between ECS and infants' developmental behaviors. Results: The prevalence of ECS was 47.5% (1 443/3 042), among which ECS without medical indication and ECS with medical indication were 27.2% (826/3 042) and 20.3% (617/3 042), respectively. After maternal demographic characteristics, pregnant exposure and infants' basic information adjusted, compared to women with vaginal delivery, both ECS with medical indication and without medical indication increased the risk of a delay in gross motor on infants at 6 months old (RR (95%CI: 1.72 (1.08-2.77) and 1.87 (1.11-3.15), respectively.) ECS without indication decreased the risk of a delay in fine motor on infants at 6 months old (RR (95%CI):0.48 (0.28-0.82)), both ECS without medical indication and with medical indication had no statistically significant effect on 18 months infants' communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving and person-social function, the RR (95%CI) for ECS without medical indication were 0.86 (0.43-1.74), 1.55 (0.86-2.78), 0.74 (0.49-1.15), 1.10 (0.68-1.78) and 1.17 (0.66-2.08), respectively; and the RR (95%CI) for ECS with medical indication were 0.33 (0.12-1.02), 1.10 (0.55-2.21), 0.79 (0.48-1.29), 0.58 (0.29-1.13) and 1.48 (0.78-2.81), respectively. Conclusion ECS affected motor development in infants at the age of 6 months old, and no influence was found in infants at the age of 18 months old.

Objective To study the change of levels of IL-6,IL-17,IL-23,IL-8,TNF-α and IFN-γ and their clinical significance on children with different types of Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) Methods The blood specimens of 180 children with HSP as disease group and 30 health children as normal group were collected respectively.Disease group included 30 children at acute stage and 30 at convalescence stage of primary abdominal type,30 at acute stage and 30 at convalescence stage of primary non-abdominal type,30 at acute stage of secondary abdominal type,and 30 at acute stage of secondary non-abdominal type.The plasma levels of IL-6,IL-8,IL-17,IL-23,TNF-α and IFN-γ in the two groups were measured by ELISA method for comparison and analysis.Results The plasma levels of IL-6,IL-8,IL-17,IL-23 and TNF-α in disease group were higher than those in the normal group (P＜0.05).Those levels in the children at acute stage and of primary group were also found to be higher than those at convalescence stage (P＜0.05) and of secondary group (P＜0.05) respectively.Comparison of IL-6,IL-8,IL-17,IL-23 and TNF-α between abdominal type and the non-abdominal type had no significant difference (P＞0.05).The plasma level of IFN-γ in disease group was lower than those in normal group (P＜0.05).The levels of IFN-γ in the children at acute stage and of primary group were lower than those at convalescence stage (P ＜0.05) and of the secondary group (P ＜0.05) Comparison of IFN-γ between abdominal type and non-abdominal type had no significant difference (P＞0.05) Conclusions The plasma levels of IL-6,IL-8,IL-17,IL-23,TNF-o,IFN-γ show obvious changes in children with HSP,which suggests that the changes of cytokines are associated with the pathogenesis and prognosis of Henoch-Schonlein purpura.

We developed a novel method for the rapid determination of lysozyme using a new fluorogenic substrate that consists of a cationic aluminum phthalocyanine ( tetra ( trimethylammonio ) aluminum phthalocyanine, TTMAAlPc ) , and an anionic mucopolysaccharide ( heparin, HP ) . We found that fluorescence from the cationic aluminum phthalocyanine, a red-region fluorescence probe, was quenched significantly in acidic media in the presence of low concentrations of anionic mucopolysaccharide heparin ( HP) bearing anionic sulfonic acid groups, because of induced aggregation. The practically non-fluorescent substrate degraded into small molecular fragments upon the hydrolysis of lysozyme, and thus the phthalocyanine molecules aggregated in HP were released, resulting in significant fluorescence recovery in the reaction system. This phenomenon forms the foundation of the proposed method. The reaction mechanism was determined using fluorescence spectroscopy and fluorescence anisotropy techniques. Factors that affected the determination were investigated. Under optimal conditions, the linear range was 0. 2-2 mg/L, and the detection limit was 0. 015 mg/L. The developed method is easy to operate and has good selectivity and sensitivity. This method was used in the analysis of practical samples of lysozyme, and the results were in agreement with those determined by a conventional turbidimetric method.

Remarkable progress has been achieved in the transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)for the treatment of liver injury and hepatic failure.However,there are obstacles such as low engraftment capacity,tumorigenesis,and a fibrogenic potential that all hamper the use of MSCs in clinical trials.Therefore,it is worthwhile to talk about the alternatives that will increase the safety and efficacy of MSCs therapy.To date,applications of MSCs-derived hepatocytes,genetically modified MSCs,or MSC-conditioned medium for promoting liver regeneration have shown encouraging results.This review summarizes the current applications of MSCs in the study of hepatic regeneration.

Objective To compare the effects of preload with intravenous infusion of 6％ hydroxyethyl starch combined with phenylephrine or dopamine to prevent the hypotension after combined epiduralspinal anesthesia in parturient undergoing caesarean section.Methods Eighty patients with ASA class Ⅰ or Ⅱ[,were randomly divided into Dopamine group and Phenylephrine group,40 cases in each group.The 6％hydroxyethyl starch 500 ml was infused at the tate of 20 ml/(kg · h) after the intravenous catheterization was established and after the finishing of the infusion of 250 ml,the dopamine 5 mg (Dopamine group) or 200 ug phenylephrine (Phenylephrine group) were added respectively in residual liquid.After the bupivacaine was injected into the subarachnoid space,the intravenous infusion was continued at the same rate until the fetus was taken out and the blood pressure and heart rate were measured at intervals of 1 min.The blood sample of fetal cord was taken to measure ther troponin Ⅰ concentration.Results The incidence of hypotension after combined epidural-spinal anesthesia anesthesia in dopamine group (2/40) and in phenylephrine group (3/40) was with no statistical difference (P ＞ 0.05) ;The incidence of bradycardia in dopamine group (0/40) was significantly lower than that in phenylephrine group (6/40)) (P ＜0.05) ; The incidence of tachycardia in dopamine group (8/40) was significantly higher than that in phenylephrine group (1/40) (P ＜0.05) ; The troponin Ⅰ concentration of fetal cord blood in dopamine group [(0.21 ±0.07) ng/ml] and in phenylephrine group [(0.18 ±0.09)ng/ml]was with no statistical difference (P ＞0.05).Conclusion Preload with intravenous infusion of 6％ hydroxyethyl starch combined with phenylephrine or dopamine can effectively prevent the hypotension after combined epidural-spinal anesthesia in parturient undergoing caesarean section with no significant effect on the fetus and both can be chosen in terms of the heart rate of parturient before anesthesia.
