Journal of Experimental Hematology 2023;31(4):1050-1055
OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the expression and prognostic value of cytokines in patients with newly diagnosed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).
METHODS:
Clinical data of 62 patients diagnosed with DLBCL in the First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province from June 2017 to November 2018 were collected. The differences in expression levels of 14 serum cytokines [interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-17A, IL-17F, IL-22, interferon (IFN)-γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, TNF-β] in patients with different survival outcomes, and the impact of the cytokines on 3-year progression-free survival (PFS) and 3-year overall survival (OS) of patients with DLBCL were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS:
Among the 14 cytokines, only the expression of IL-10 was significantly different in patients with different survival outcomes (P =0.007). According to the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, the optimal cut-off value for IL-10 was 11.74 pg/ml. Serum IL-10 was positively correlated with infection markers procalcitonin (PCT) (r =0.321, P =0.029), C-reactive protein (CRP) (r =0.320, P =0.013) and tumor burden index lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (r =0.439, P <0.001) in newly diagnosed DLBCL patients. The level of IL-10 in patients with pulmonary infection was significantly higher than that in patients without pulmonary infection (P =0.012). However, there was no statistically significant difference on the 3-year survival outcomes between patients with or without pulmonary infection. There was no significant difference in IL-10 level in patients with different Ann Arbor stages (P >0.05). Patients with high IL-10 level (IL-10>11.74 pg/ml) had significantly higher LDH level than those with low IL-10 level (IL-10≤11.74 pg/ml) (P <0.001). The 3-year PFS rate and 3-year OS rate of DLBCL patients with high IL-10 level were significantly lower than those of low IL-10 level group [(44.4±11.7)% vs (81.8±5.8)%, P <0.001; (61.6±11.5)% vs (93.2±3.8)%, P =0.001].
CONCLUSION
Serum IL-10 level in newly diagnosed DLBCL patients can reflect the inflammatory state of the body, which may be related to tumor load. Newly diagnosed DLBCL patients with serum IL-10>11.74 pg/ml have higher early mortality and worse prognosis.

Case inclusion criteria were gastric malignancies confirmed by pathology, without distant metastasis by examination before operation and exploration during operation, patients undergoing laparoscopic radical gastrectomy, intact function of important organs and with complete data. Exclusion criteria were patients who underwent emergency gastric cancer resection due to gastric bleeding, perforation or obstruction, etc., tumor found to invade adjacent organs such as pancreas or transverse colon during the operation, conversion to open surgery during the operation, those who had other malignant tumors (except thyroid cancer) within 5 years, and those had severe cardiopulmonary, liver, or kidney insufficiency before surgery. Outcomes included: (1) baseline information of patients; (2) trend of the quantity of laparoscopic radical gastrectomy year by year; (3) evolution of the mode of digestive tract reconstruction; (4) periopertive outcome short-term complication was defined as complication occurring within 30 days after operation and classified accordiny to the clavien-Dindo criteria; and (5) 5-year overall survival. SPSS software was used for statistical analysis. Continuous variables that obeyed the normal distribution were expressed in the form of Mean±SD. Days of hospital stay that did not follow a normal distribution were expressed as median (Q1,Q3), and the Mann-Whiney U test was used for comparison. Discrete variables were expressed as cases (%), and chi-square test or rank sum test was used for comparison between groups. Linear regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between the amount of surgery and the year of surgery. Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were used for survival analysis. Two-tailed P<0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: Among the 3012 cases, 2114 were male and 898 were female. The patients' average age at surgery was (61.1±10.7) years old. Objective:
The relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and glycemic indices, including plasma glucose (FPG), 2-hour postload glucose (2h-PG), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), remains inconclusive. We aimed to explore the associations between glycemic indices and SUA levels in the general Chinese population.
Methods:
The current study was a cross-sectional analysis using the first follow-up survey data from The China Cardiometabolic Disease and Cancer Cohort Study. A total of 105,922 community-dwelling adults aged ≥ 40 years underwent the oral glucose tolerance test and uric acid assessment. The nonlinear relationships between glycemic indices and SUA levels were explored using generalized additive models.
Results:
A total of 30,941 men and 62,361 women were eligible for the current analysis. Generalized additive models verified the inverted U-shaped association between glycemic indices and SUA levels, but with different inflection points in men and women. The thresholds for FPG, 2h-PG, and HbA1c for men and women were 6.5/8.0 mmol/L, 11.0/14.0 mmol/L, and 6.1/6.5, respectively (SUA levels increased with increasing glycemic indices before the inflection points and then eventually decreased with further increases in the glycemic indices).
Conclusion
An inverted U-shaped association was observed between major glycemic indices and uric acid levels in both sexes, while the inflection points were reached earlier in men than in women.

Journal of Integrative Medicine 2021;19(2):158-166
OBJECTIVE:
This study tests whether long-term intake of Allium tuberosum (AT) can alleviate pulmonary inflammation in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthmatic mice and evaluates its effect on the intestinal microbiota and innate lymphoid cells (ILCs).
METHODS:
BALB/c mice were divided into three groups: phosphate buffer saline, OVA and OVA + AT. The asthmatic murine model was established by sensitization and challenge of OVA in the OVA and OVA + AT groups. AT was given to the OVA + AT group by oral gavage from day 0 to day 27. On day 28, mice were sacrificed. Histopathological evaluation of lung tissue was performed using hematoxylin and eosin, and periodic acid-Schiff staining. The levels of IgE in serum, interleukin-5 (IL-5) and IL-13 from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The ILCs from the lung and gut were detected by flow cytometry. 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing was used to analyze the differences in colon microbiota among treatment groups.
RESULTS:
We found that long-term intake of AT decreased the number of inflammatory cells from BALF, reduced the levels of IL-5 and IL-13 in BALF, and IgE level in serum, and rescued pulmonary histopathology with less mucus secretion in asthmatic mice. 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing results showed that AT strongly affected the colonic bacteria community structure in asthmatic mice, although it had no significant effect on the abundance and diversity of the microbiota. Ruminococcaceae and Desulfovibrionaceae were identified as two biomarkers of the treatment effect of AT. Moreover, AT decreased the numbers of ILCs in both the lung and gut of asthmatic mice.
CONCLUSION
The results indicate that AT inhibits pulmonary inflammation, possibly by impeding the activation of ILCs and adjusting the homeostasis of gut microbiota in asthmatic mice.
