OBJECTIVES:
Near vision loss (NVL) is one of the leading causes of visual impairment worldwide, exerting a profound impact on individual quality of life and socio-economic development. This study aims to analyze the burden of NVL in China by sex and age groups from 1990 to 2021 and to project trends over the next 15 years.
METHODS:
Using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 database, we conducted descriptive analyses of NVL prevalence in China, calculated age-standardized prevalence rates (ASPR) and age-standardized disability-adjusted life years rates (ASDR) to compare burden differences between sexes and age groups, and applied an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to predict NVL trends for the next 15 years. The model selection was based on best-fit criteria to ensure reliable projections.
RESULTS:
From 1990 to 2021, China's ASPR of NVL rose from 10 096.24/100 000 to 15 624.54/100 000, and ASDR increased from 101.75/100 000 to 158.75/100 000. In 2021, ASPR (16 551.70/100 000) and ASDR (167.69/100 000) were higher among females than males (14 686.21/100 000 and 149.76/100 000, respectively). China ranked highest globally in both NVL cases and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), with female burden significantly exceeding male burden. Projections indicated this trend and sex gap will persist until 2036. Compared with 1990, the prevalence cases and DALYs increased by 239.20% and 238.82%, respectively in 2021, with the highest burden among females and the 55-59 age group. The ARIMA model predicted continued increases in prevalence and DALYs by 2036, with females maintaining a higher burden than males.
CONCLUSIONS
This study reveals a marked increase in the NVL burden in China and predicts continued growth in the coming years. Public health policies should prioritize NVL prevention and control, with special attention to women and middle-aged populations to mitigate long-term societal and health impacts.

The applications of nuclear technology in industries, medicine, and other fields have increased the risk of radiation injury. Although some small-molecule drugs for radiation injury treatment have been applied clinically or are in preclinical research, their therapeutic efficacy is significantly limited by short circulation time and rapid metabolism. Nanomaterials have attracted growing attention with their outstanding bioactivity, chemical stability, tissue compatibility, and targeted delivery capabilities, therefore having the promise of offering the potential solutions to the limitations of current small-molecule drugs. However, their biosafety and clinical efficacy require further investigation. This review summarizes the design strategies and classifications of nanomaterials for radiation injury treatment, analyzes current research progress in their therapeutic applications, and introduces nanomaterial-based approaches for enhancing the elimination of internal radionuclide contamination. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of nanomaterials in radiation injury treatment are discussed. This review aims to provide researchers with a comprehensive understanding of recent advances in nanomaterial-based radiation injury therapeutics, thereby promoting further development in this field.

Objective To assess the utility of real-time shear wave elastography(SWE)in diagnosing vascular erectile dysfunction(ED)and to predict the optimal timing for color Doppler flow imaging(CDFI)examination. Methods Patients diagnosed with ED who received intracavernosal injection(ICI)of vasoactive drugs were recruited and categorized based on CDFI findings into three groups:arterial ED(n=17),venous ED(n=33),and non-vascular ED(n=29).SWE technology was utilized to measure the average Young's modulus(E value)of the corpus cavernosum in these patients, both in the flaccid state prior to ICI and at four time points following ICI-induced erection.Subsequently, the differences in E values among the three groups were analyzed. Results There was no significant difference in the E value of the corpus cavernosum in the flaccid state among the arterial, venous, and non-vascular ED groups before ICI(P>0.05).However,the E value in the flaccid state for each group was significantly higher than the mean E values observed at the four time points after ICI-induced erection(P<0.01).Additionally,the mean E values at these four time points post-ICI were also statistically significant(P<0.01).ROC curve analysis revealed that the AUC for diagnosing arterial, venous, and non-vascular ED using the E value after ICI were 0.814,0.770,and 0.711,respectively,with corresponding cutoff values of 9.98,8.16 and 7.06 kPa.The combined use of CDFI and SWE cutoff values following ICI-induced erection significantly shortened the detection time for both arterial and venous ED groups(P<0.01).Conclusions SWE can accurately measure the E value of the corpus cavernosum following erection induced by the vasoactive drug ICI,thereby facilitating the differentia-tion of various types of ED.Additionally, when combined with CDFI,this technique can reduce the time required for examination.

Objective:To investigate the changes in brain functional network and structural-functional network coupling in children with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), and to analyze their correlation with cognitive function, disease duration, and age of onset. Methods:This study was a cross-sectional study. Clinical and imaging data of 19 children with DRE who received consultation and treatment at the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University from August 2021 to August 2023 (DRE group) were prospectively included. Another 27 age-and sex-matched healthy children were collected as the healthy control group. All subjects had 3D-T 1WI, T 2 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans and Wechsler Intelligence Scale assessments. Independent sample t-test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to analyze the global and local topological attributes, as well as the structural-functional coupling (SFC) values at the whole brain and modular levels in two groups. Correlations between abnormal resting state brain functional network indicators and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale score [verbal comprehension index (VCI), perceptual reasoning index (PRI), working memory index (WMI), processing speed index (PSI), full scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ)], disease duration and age of onset was evaluated using a Spearman or Pearson correlation analysis. Results:Compared to the healthy control group, DRE group exhibited decreased VCI, PRI, WMI, PSI, FSIQ and the differences were all statistically significant (all P<0.05). Both brain functional networks had small world attributes. There was a statistically significant difference in the area under the curve of sparsity of degree centrality (DC) in the left pallidum between the DRE group and healthy control group (2.998±0.942, 4.992±1.945, t=-4.07, FDR corrected P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the DRE group had decreased SFC within the limbic network (LN) ( P<0.05), increased SFC within the sensorimotor (SMN) ( P<0.05), decreased SFC between the default mode network-LN ( P<0.05), and increased SFC between the SMN-attentional network (AN) ( P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in SFC at the whole brain level between the two groups. Correlation analysis indicated that DC in left pallidum in DRE group negatively correlated with the PSI ( r=-0.537, P=0.018), and SFC between the SMN and AN demonstrated a negative correlation with age of onset ( r=-0.537, P=0.018). Conclusion:The altered DC in left pallidum may be related to cognitive impairment in children with DRE, providing biomarker information for the study of neural mechanisms in children with DRE.
