Due to patient compliance and convenience, oral medication is likely the most common and acceptable method of drug administration. However, traditional dosage forms such as tablets or capsules may lead to low drug bioavailability and poor therapeutic efficiency. Therefore, with advancements in material science and micro/nano manufacturing technology, various carriers have been developed to enhance drug absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. In this context, we initially discuss the key biological factors that hinder drug transport and absorption (including anatomical, physical, and biological factors). Building on this foundation, recent progress in both conventional and innovative oral drug delivery routes aimed at improving drug bioavailability and targeting is reviewed. Finally, we explore future prospects for oral drug delivery systems as well as potential challenges in clinical translation.

Objective To investigate the risk factors for delayed union of extra-articular fractures of the middle and lower third of the tibia treated by locking plate. Methods Total of 135 patients of extra-articular fractures of the middle and lower third of the tibia from January 2013 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed, including 85 males and 50 females, ranged from 19 to 80 years old.All cases were treated with locking plates. The patients were divided into union group and delayed union group ac-cording to the condition of fracture union. The risk factors of delayed healing were determined by univariate analysis of 14 factors that might affect fracture healing first, then the factors with significance were analyzed by binary Logistic regression. Results There were 13 patients of delayed union, and the rate of delayed union was 9.63%.Univariate analysis showed that delayed union was associated with age, smoking, reduction method, anemia and time of preoperative preparation.Regression analysis showed thatage[OR=0.849,95%CI(0.755,0.954),P=0.006],smoking[OR=0.020,95%CI(0.002,0.193),P=0.001],reduction method[OR=23.924,95%CI(2.210,258.943),P=0.009],anemia[OR=0.016,95%CI(0.001,0.289),P=0.005]were the con-tributory factors for delayed union. Conclusion Young age, smoking, closed reduction and anemia are the risk factors for de-layed union of extra-articular fractures of the middle and lower third of the tibia treated by locking plate.

Objective To explore the application value of low-flow rate and-contrast injection scheme for pulmonary artery computed tomography angiography(CTA)in the elderly patients. Methods Sixty elderly patients undergoing pulmonary artery CTA in some hospital from April 2020 to January 2023 were selected and divided into a control group(30 cases)and an experimental group(30 cases)according to the contrast agent injection schemes.A conventional contrast injection scheme was used for the control group, and an optimized contrast injection scheme with low flow rate and low contrast dose was designed for the experimental group. The two gorups were observed and subjectively scored in terms of the degree of pulmonary artery enhancement, the display of pulmonary artery trunks and branches and the sharpness of image vessel edges, and objectively evaluated for the degree of contrast sclerosis artifacts in the superior vena cava and the enhancement CT values of the pulmonary artery trunks and the left and the right pulmonary veins. The extravasation of the contrast agent was recorded for the patients in the 2 groups.SPSS 25.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results The two groups had no significant differences in score pulmonary artery CTA image quality(P>0.05);the experimental group had the socre of contrast sclerosis artifacts in the superior vena cava statistically lower than that of the control group(P<0.05).The two groups had no obvious differences in the CT values of the pulmonary artery trunks and the left and the right pulmonary veins(P>0.05).There were no patients with the extravasation of the contrast agent found in the experimental group, while there one case with severe extravasation and 4 cases with mild or moderate extravasation in the control group. Conclusion Low-flow rate and-contrast injection scheme for pulmonary artery CTA of the elderly patients contributes to avoiding contrast agent extrava-sation while ensuring image quality, enhancing patient experience and safety.[Chinese Medical Equipment Journal,2024,45(10):66-70]

Pyran- and furanocoumarins are key representatives of tetrahydropyrans and tetrahydrofurans, respectively, exhibiting diverse physiological and medical bioactivities. However, the biosynthetic mechanisms for their core structures remain poorly understood. Here we combined multiomics analyses of biosynthetic enzymes in Peucedanum praeruptorum and in vitro functional verification and identified two types of key enzymes critical for pyran and furan ring biosynthesis in plants. These included three distinct P. praeruptorum prenyltransferases (PpPT1-3) responsible for the prenylation of the simple coumarin skeleton 7 into linear or angular precursors, and two novel CYP450 cyclases (PpDC and PpOC) crucial for the cyclization of the linear/angular precursors into either tetrahydropyran or tetrahydrofuran scaffolds. Biochemical analyses of cyclases indicated that acid/base-assisted epoxide ring opening contributed to the enzyme-catalyzed tetrahydropyran and tetrahydrofuran ring refactoring. The possible acid/base-assisted catalytic mechanisms of the identified cyclases were theoretically investigated and assessed using site-specific mutagenesis. We identified two possible acidic amino acids Glu303 in PpDC and Asp301 in PpOC as vital in the catalytic process. This study provides new enzymatic tools in the epoxide formation/epoxide-opening mediated cascade reaction and exemplifies how plants become chemically diverse in terms of enzyme function and catalytic process.

Human-animal interaction has a long-standing tradition dating back to ancient times. With the rapid advancements in intelligent chips, wearable devices, and machine algorithms, the intelligent interaction between animals and electronic technology, facilitated by electronic devices and systems for communication, perception, and control, has become a reality. These electronic devices aim to implement an animal-centric working mode to enhance human understanding of animals and promote the development of animal intelligence and creativity. This article takes medium-sized and large animals as research objects, with the goal of developing their ability enhancement, and introduces the concept of “intelligent animal augmentation system (IAAS)”. This concept is used to describe the characteristics of such devices and provides a comprehensive overview of existing animal and computer interface solutions. In general, IAAS can be divided into implantable and non-implantable types, each composed of interface platforms, perception and interpretation, control and instruction components. Through various levels of enhancement systems and architectural patterns, intelligent interaction between humans and animals can be realized. Although existing IAAS still lack a complete independent interaction system architecture, they hold great promise and development space in the future. Not only can they be applied as substitutes for cutting-edge devices and transportation equipment, but they are also expected to achieve cross-species information interaction through intelligent interconnection. Additionally, IAAS can promote bidirectional interaction between humans and animals, playing a significant role in advancing animal ethics and ecological protection. Furthermore, the development of interaction models based on animal subjects can provide insightful research experiences for the design of human-computer interaction systems, thereby contributing to the more efficient realization of the ambitious goal of human-machine integration.

This data article describes the"Typical Regional Activity Patterns"(TRAP)dataset, which is based on the Tackling Key Problems in Air Pollution Control Program. In order to explore the interaction between air pollution and physical activity,we collected activity patterns of 9,221 residents with different occupations and lifestyles for three consecutive days in typical regions(Jinan and Baoding)where air pollutant concentrations were higher than those in neighboring areas. The TRAP dataset consists of two aspects of information:demographic indicators(personal information, occupation, personal habits, and living situation)and physical activity pattern data(activity location and intensity);additionally, the exposure measures of physical activity patterns are included, which data users can match to various endpoints for their specific purpose. This dataset provides evidence for exploring the attributes of activity patterns of residents in northern China and for interdisciplinary researchers to develop strategies and measures for health education and health promotion.
