AIM:To analyze differential proteins associated with the pathogenesis of dry eye(DE)using bioinformatics methods, in order to reveal their potential molecular mechanisms.METHODS: Articles published in PubMed and EMBASE databases from the inception of the database to August 31, 2023, that used proteomic methods to detect protein expression in clinical samples of dry eye were searched. Differential proteins were selected and further analyzed using the STRING database and Cytoscape software for hub gene screening and module analysis. Protein-protein interaction(PPI)analysis, gene ontology(GO)functional annotation, and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes(KEGG)pathway enrichment analysis were performed.RESULTS: A total of 21 articles were included, identifying 74 differentially expressed proteins. The most frequently occurring differential proteins were calgranulin A(SA1008), lipocalin-1(LCN1), lysozyme C(LYZ), mammaglobin-B(SCGB2A1), proline-rich protein 4(PRR4), transferrin(TF), and calgranulinB(S100A9). The top 10 hub genes were serum albumin(ALB), tumor necrosis factor(TNF), interleukin 6(IL6), IL1B, IL8, matrix metalloproteinase 9(MMP9), alpha-1-antitrypsin(SERPINA1), IL10, complement component 3(C3), and lactotransferrin(LTF). Module analysis suggested MMP9 and PRR4 as seed genes. KEGG analysis showed that differential proteins were mainly enriched in the IL17 signaling pathway(61.9%).CONCLUSION: The results reveal potential molecular targets and pathways for DE and confirm the association between the pathogenesis of DE and inflammation. Further in-depth research is needed to confirm the significance of these biomarkers in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE To prepare vancomycin hydrochloride (VH)-loaded polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles (VH@PDA nanoparticles), and study their antimicrobial effect in combination with photothermal therapy. METHODS Using PDA as the carrier, VH was loaded to prepare VH@PDA nanoparticles (PDA nanoparticles were prepared using the same method). The nanoparticles were characterized with laser particle size analyzer, transmission electron microscope, and UV visible absorption spectrometer; the drug loading capacity and encapsulation efficiency of the nanoparticles were determined. The near-infrared laser irradiation was adopted to determine their photothermal ability. Taking Staphylococcus aureus as the research object, the bactericidal properties of the nanoparticles in combination with photothermal therapy in vitro were clarified through plate colony coating method, live/dead staining analysis, crystal violet staining. Using L929 cells as the research object, the effects of VH@PDA nanoparticles at different mass concentrations (0, 3.125, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 μg/mL) on cell viability were investigated to assess their biocompatibility. RESULTS VH@PDA nanoparticles were successfully loaded with VH, exhibiting uniform particle size (approximately 300 nm), distinct pore size, and a spherical structure. The drug loading capacity was 11.34%, the encapsulation efficiency was 32.00%, the photothermal conversion efficiency reached 23.55%, and they demonstrated stable photothermal performance. The antibacterial effect results of the combined photothermal therapy demonstrated that without near- infrared laser irradiation, the antibacterial effects of VH, PDA nanoparticles, and VH@PDA nanoparticles were not significant. However, when subjected to near-infrared laser irradiation, VH@PDA nanoparticles exhibited a pronounced antibacterial effect. The results of the cell experiments revealed that after treatment with VH@PDA nanoparticles at various mass concentrations, the cell viability rates remained above 80%. CONCLUSIONS VH@PDA nanoparticles are successfully prepared, which exhibit stable photothermal properties, significant antibacterial effects when combined with photothermal therapy, and good biocompatibility.

Journal of Environmental and Occupational Medicine 2025;42(7):862-869
Bisphenols (BPs) are extensively used in food packaging, personal care products, and plastics, making them prevalent in both living and working environments, which has raised significant concern. As endocrine-disrupting chemicals, BPs exert toxic effects on the female reproductive system by binding to estrogen receptors, thereby activating or inhibiting the expression of genes related to reproductive functions, which disrupts the normal function of the endocrine system. This paper reviewed the effects of bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol F (BPF) on female reproductive function, focusing on three key aspects: the effects on the female reproductive organs, the occurrence of associated reproductive disorders, and the mechanisms of toxicity. Specifically, this review highlighted the effects on ovarian function, uterine morphology and function, and fallopian tube function, as well as their correlation with polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, miscarriage, and eclampsia. Additionally, the toxic mechanisms of BPs exposure were summarized, providing a scientific basis for future research on the impact of BPs on the female reproductive system, as well as for the assessment of potential health risks and the development of preventive measures.

ObjectiveTo investigate the immunomodulatory effect of polysaccharides from Astragali Radix-Angelicae Sinensis Radix herb pair(Qi-gui polysaccharides) on lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced RAW264.7 macrophages and to characterize the structure of the active component Qi-gui homogeneous polysaccharide(AAPS-4a), and evaluate its protective effect on ulcerative colitis(UC). MethodsThe effects of six Qi-gui polysaccharides(0.01-100 mg·L-1) on the proliferation of RAW264.7 cells were assessed by cell proliferation and activity assay(CCK-8), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was used to investigate the effects of the six polysaccharides(3, 10 mg·L-1) on the secretion levels of tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α, interferon(IFN)-β, and nitric oxide(NO) in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells. After screening for active polysaccharides, high-performance size-exclusion chromatography(HPSEC) was used to determine its homogeneity and relative molecular weight, then its characteristic functional groups were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), monosaccharide composition was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC), methylation analysis combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) was performed to determine the types and linkage modes of sugar residues, and one- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR) were used to identify the sugar residue composition and configuration of the active polysaccharide. Finally, experimental animals were divided into the normal group, model group, AAPS-4a low-dose group(50 mg·kg-1), AAPS-4a high-dose group(100 mg·kg-1), and sulfasalazine(SASP) group (75 mg·kg-1). Except for the normal group, the acute UC mouse model was induced using 3.5% dextran sulfate sodium salt(DSS). Each treatment group was administered the corresponding dose via oral gavage for 7 days, and changes in body weight were recorded. After treatment, the spleen index and disease activity index(DAI) score were calculated, TNF-α and interleukin-6(IL-6) levels in the serum were detected by ELISA, and histopathological changes in colon tissue were observed by hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining. ResultsAt the cellular level, AAPS-4a exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition of LPS-induced increases in TNF-α, IFN-β, and NO levels(P<0.01). Structural characterization of AAPS-4a revealed that it was a homogeneous polysaccharide with a relative molecular weight of 7.6×103 Da, consisting of mannose(Man), glucose(Glc), and galactose(Gal) in a molar ratio of 1.3∶23.9∶1.0. It was primarily composed of five sugar residues of 1,6-α-D-Glcp, T-α-D-Glcp, 1,3-β-D-Galp, 1,4-α-D-Manp, and 1,2-α-D-Galp. In vivo experiments showed that compared with the normal group, the model group demonstrated markedly increased DAI score and spleen index, significantly reduced colon length, and significantly elevated levels of TNF-α and IL-6(P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the AAPS-4a high-dose group significantly reduced the DAI score and spleen index, as well as TNF-α and IL-6 levels, and improved colonic atrophy(P<0.05, P<0.01). Pathological observations showed that AAPS-4a significantly inhibited inflammatory cell infiltration in colon tissue and alleviated pathological damage. ConclusionAAPS-4a, a neutral homogeneous polysaccharide composed of 1,6-α-D-Glcp, T-α-D-Glcp, 1,3-β-D-Galp, 1,4-α-D-Manp and 1,2-α-D-Galp, is identified as a key bioactive component contributing to the anti-UC effect of the Qi-gui herb pair. Its immunoregulatory and anti-UC properties suggest its potential as a therapeutic agent for UC.

OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the effectiveness of digital three-dimensional (3D) assisted unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE) in the treatment of highly isolated lumbar disc herniation (LDH) with translaminar approach.
METHODS:
The clinical data of 59 patients who met the selection criteria and underwent UBE treatment due to highly isolated LDH between January 2022 and December 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 25 cases were treated with digital 3D assisted translaminar approach (observation group) and 34 cases were treated with interlaminar approach (control group). There was no significant difference in gender, age, disease duration, surgical segment, and preoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) score and Oswestry disability index (ODI) between the two groups ( P>0.05). The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, and lateral articular surface preservation rate were recorded and compared between the two groups. VAS score and ODI were used to evaluate the improvements of pain and function before operation and at 3 and 6 months after operation. The modified MacNab criteria was used to evaluate the effectiveness at last follow-up.
RESULTS:
One patient in the control group had dural tear, and the other patients had no nerve injury, infection, dural tear, or other related complications. There was no significant difference in operation time and intraoperative blood loss between the two groups ( P>0.05). Patients in both groups were followed up 6-13 months, with an average of 8.3 months. The lateral articular surface preservation rate in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group ( P<0.05). Three patients in the observation group and 2 patients in the control group had calf muscle venous thrombosis, which was cured after anticoagulant treatment with rivaroxaban and delayed exercise time. There was no recurrence or second operation during the follow-up period. The VAS score and ODI of the two groups at 3 and 6 months after operation significantly improved when compared with those before operation ( P<0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups at each time point after operation ( P>0.05). At last follow-up, the effectiveness was evaluated according to the modified MacNab criteria, and there was no significant difference in the evaluation grade and excellent and good rate between the two groups ( P>0.05).
CONCLUTION
UBE via translaminar approach is safe and effective for the treatment of highly isolated LDH, which is beneficial to protect the facet joint, maintain spinal stability, and reduce soft tissue injury. With the assistance of digital 3D technique, preoperative planning can be performed accurately.

Objective:To evaluate the clinical efficacy and impact on quality of life of the biofeedback (BF) therapy combined with the Wenyang Yiqi Prescription and self-efficacy interventions in patients with functional defecation disorders (FDD).Methods:A prospective, randomized controlled trial design was employed. A total of 128 FDD patients were selected from the Pelvic Floor Center of the Department of Proctology, Suzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, between January 2021 and April 2023. These patients were randomly divided into two groups, with 64 cases in each group. Additionally, 41 historical control patients, who had received conventional BF training between June 2015 and January 2018 at the same center, were included for comparison. The historical control group received conventional BF therapy, the intervention group 1 combined BF therapy with self-efficacy interventions, and the intervention group 2 added the Wenyang Yiqi Prescription based on intervention group 1's treatment. All three groups underwent two treatment courses. Constipation symptom scores before and after treatment were performed; self-efficacy was assessed via the Self-Rated Abilities for Health Practices scale (SRAHP); health behaviors were evaluated using the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP); anxiety and depression were evaluated through Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS); quality of life was measured through SF-36. Clinical efficacy was evaluated based on constipation symptom scores. Results:During the treatment period, seven patients dropped out due to personal reasons, leaving 61 patients in intervention group 1 and 60 patients in intervention group 2 for efficacy analysis. The total effective rates were 80.32% (49/61) in intervention group 1, 83.33% (50/60) in intervention group 2, and 56.10% (23/41) in the historical control group. The total effective rates of both intervention groups were significantly higher than those in the historical control group ( χ2=7.06, 9.15; P=0.029, 0.010, respectively). After treatment, intervention group 2 showed significantly lower constipation-related straining scores [1 (1, 2) vs. 2 (1, 2), Z=-4.51] compared to intervention group 1 ( P<0.05). Additionally, intervention group 2 had lower scores for straining [1 (1, 2) vs. 2 (1, 2), Z=-3.15] and defecation time [1 (0, 1) vs. 1 (1, 2), Z=-3.13] compared to the historical control group ( P<0.05). Psychological comfort efficacy (19.13 ± 2.51 vs. 16.98 ± 1.86, t=5.36), health responsibility efficacy (23.63 ± 4.69 vs. 22.59 ± 3.05, t=2.06), and overall SRAHP scores (75.98 ± 4.44 vs. 72.33 ± 5.16, t=4.17) were higher in intervention group 2 compared to intervention group 1 ( P<0.05). The HPLP scores (79.33 ± 11.13 vs. 72.80 ± 9.20, t=3.10) of intervention group 2 were higher than those of the historical control group ( P<0.05). Emotional functioning scores (75.98 ± 18.45 vs. 68.92 ± 20.58 and 68.55 ± 18.21, F=20.91) in intervention group 2 were higher than in both intervention group 1 and the historical control group ( P<0.05). Conclusion:The combination of the Wenyang Yiqi Prescription with BF therapy and self-efficacy interventions effectively improves the clinical symptoms and quality of life in FDD patients.

Acta Universitatis Medicinalis Anhui 2025;60(6):1043-1051
Objective :
To investigate the expression and biological function of circular RNA(circRNA) hsa_circ_0002938 in gastric cancer.
Methods :
45 pairs of tumor tissues and para-cancerous tissues from gastric cancer patients who underwent tumor reduction surgery at the hospital were collected. Human gastric cancer cells SGC-7901, BGC-823, HGC-27, MGC-803 and immortalized gastric mucosal epithelial cells GES-1 were routinely cultured. RT-qPCR was utilized to detect the expression of hsa_circ_0002938 in gastric cancer tissues and cells. Chi-square test was used to analyze its association with the clinicopathological characteristics of patients, and the Kaplan-Meier method was employed to assess the relationship between hsa_circ_0002938 expression levels and patient prognosis. The effects of hsa_circ_0002938 on the proliferation, migration and invasion abilities of gastric cancer cells were detected by CCK-8, scratch wound healing and Transwell assays. Bioinformatics was used to predict the miRNA and its downstream target genes that hsa_circ_0002938 might bind to. The competitive endogenous RNA regulatory network was constructed and the functions of the target genes were enriched.
Results :
The expression of hsa_circ_0002938 in gastric cancer tissues and cells was much higher than that in para-cancerous tissues and GES-1 cells(P<0.05). By contrast, patients in the high hsa_circ_0002938 expression group had significantly shorter 2-year progression-free survival than that in the low expression group after surgery(P<0.01). Moreover, knocking down the expression of hsa_circ_0002938 reduced the proliferative, migratory, and invasive abilities of gastric cancer cells(P<0.05). Bioinformatics predictive analysis showed that hsa_circ_0002938 could bind to hsa-miR-342-3p and hsa-miR-503-5p. The downstream target genes of miRNA were involved in several cancer-related pathways, like mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK), hippo and Wnt signaling pathway.
Conclusion
Hsa_circ_0002938, which is highly expressed in gastric cancer tissues and cells, is closely associated with poor patient prognosis. Knockdown of hsa_circ_0002938 inhibits the proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities of gastric cancer cells. The study reveals the potential role of hsa_circ_0002938 in the progression of gastric cancer, offering new insights into its prevention and treatment.
