Objective:To explore the association of blood and urinary cadmium levels with lipid profile levels and dyslipidemia in Chinese adults aged 18 to 79 years. Methods:Based on the China National Human Biomonitoring (CNHBM) program, a cross-sectional survey was conducted from 2017 to 2018 using a multi-stage stratified random sampling method, including a total of 10 713 adults aged 18 to 79 years. Data was obtained through questionnaires, physical examinations, biological sample collection, and laboratory testing. Multiple linear mixed effect model (MLMM) and generalized linear mixed effect model (GLMM) were used to analyze the association of blood and creatinine-corrected urinary cadmium levels with lipid profile levels as well as dyslipidemia among adults. Results:The age of 10 713 participants was (47.23±0.24) years, with 5 372 males accounting for 61.3% of the national population. The weighted mean±standard error (SE) of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was (5.21±0.03), (1.86±0.03), (2.96±0.03), and (1.43±0.01) mmol/L, respectively. The prevalence rate of hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, mixed hyperlipidemia, low HDL-C, and high LDL-C was 16.0%, 21.6%, 6.6%, 13.5%, and 10.0%, respectively. MLMM showed that, after adjusting for relevant confounders, log-transformed blood cadmium levels were positively associated with increased levels of TC, TG and LDL-C ( P<0.05). When blood cadmium levels were categorized into quartiles, compared to the lowest exposure group ( Q1), participants in the highest blood cadmium exposure group ( Q4) had increases of 0.19 (95% CI: 0.06, 0.32) mmol/L in TC and 0.25 (95% CI: 0.08, 0.43) mmol/L in TG. GLMM indicated that, after adjusting for confounders, higher blood cadmium exposure levels were associated with increased risks of hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, mixed hyperlipidemia, and high LDL-C ( P<0.05). Further analysis by quartiles showed that, compared to the blood cadmium Q1 exposure group, the OR value (95% CI) for the Q4 group was 1.53 (1.12, 2.08) for hypercholesterolemia, 1.54 (1.09, 2.17) for hypertriglyceridemia, 2.24 (1.47, 3.40) for mixed hyperlipidemia, and 1.49 (1.07, 2.09) for high LDL-C. Conclusion:The cadmium internal exposure levels are associated with blood lipid profile levels as well as the incidence of dyslipidemia in Chinese adults aged 18 to 79.

Progress in Biochemistry and Biophysics 2025;52(1):162-181
Currently, the drug delivery system (DDS) based on nanomaterials has become a hot interdisciplinary research topic. One of the core issues is drug loading and controlled release, in which the key lever is carriers. Vaterite, as an inorganic porous nano-material, is one metastable structure of calcium carbonate, full of micro or nano porous. Recently, vaterite has attracted more and more attention, due to its significant advantages, such as rich resources, easy preparations, low cost, simple loading procedures, good biocompatibility and many other good points. Vaterite, gained from suitable preparation strategies, can not only possess the good drug carrying performance, like high loading capacity and stable loading efficiency, but also improve the drug release ability, showing the better drug delivery effects, such as targeting release, pH sensitive release, photothermal controlled release, magnetic assistant release, optothermal controlled release. At the same time, the vaterite carriers, with good safety itself, can protect proteins, enzymes, or other drugs from degradation or inactivation, help imaging or visualization with loading fluorescent drugs in vitro and in vivo, and play synergistic effects with other therapy approaches, like photodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy, and thermochemotherapy. Latterly, some renewed reports in drug loading and controlled release have led to their widespread applications in diverse fields, from cell level to clinical studies. This review introduces the basic characteristics of vaterite and briefly summarizes its research history, followed by synthesis strategies. We subsequently highlight recent developments in drug loading and controlled release, with an emphasis on the advantages, quantity capacity, and comparations. Furthermore, new opportunities for using vaterite in cell level and animal level are detailed. Finally, the possible problems and development trends are discussed.

Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2025;29(21):4445-4451
BACKGROUND:Cross-sectional area and fat infiltration are the standard parameters for quantifying paravertebral muscle, but it is too cumbersome and time-consuming to introduce new quantifying indicators. OBJECTIVE:To investigate the relationship between paravertebral muscle and spinopelvic sagittal parameters and the predictive value of lumbar indentation value for sagittal balance in patients with isthmic spondylolisthesis.METHODS:The study included 87 patients diagnosed with spondylolisthesis, all of whom had grade Ⅱ spondylolisthesis according to Meyerding classification, including 40 males and 47 females, with a mean age of (51.4±9.1) years. The sagittal vertical axis, pelvic incidence angle, pelvic inclination angle, sacral inclination angle, lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, and the difference between pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis were measured. The total cross-sectional area, functional cross-sectional area, and fat infiltration of lumbar paracolateral muscles were measured. Pearson correlation analysis was used to investigate the correlation between sagittal parameters and paravertebral muscle measurements. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the effects of lumbar indentation value, age, sex, and body mass index on spinopelvic sagittal balance. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to find the best cut-off point of the indentation value of the lumbar spine, and the relationship of sagittal vertical axis and pelvic incidence with lumbar lordosis was evaluated.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1) According to Pearson correlation analysis, the total cross-sectional area of the multifidus muscle was significantly correlated with lumbar lordosis (r=0.464,P<0.01) and the difference between pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis (r=-0.306,P<0.01). The functional cross-sectional area of multifidus muscle was significantly correlated with lumbar lordosis (r=0.367,P<0.01) and the difference between pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis (r=-0.228,P<0.05). The indentation value of lumbar spine was significantly correlated with the sagittal vertical axis (r=-0.300,P<0.01),lumbar lordosis(P=0.417,P<0.01),thoracic kyphosis (r=0.351,P<0.01),and the difference between pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis (r=-0.319,P<0.01). (2) According to multiple linear regression analysis, the indentation value of lumbar spine was independently correlated with the difference between pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis and the sagittal vertical axis. 55% (11/20) of patients with lumbar indentation value ≤11.5 mm had sagittal vertical axis ≤ 50 mm,while 96%(64/67) of patients with lumbar indentation value>11.5 mm had sagittal vertical axis ≤ 50 mm. 30% (6/20) of patients with the difference between pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis ≤ 11.5 mm had the difference between pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis ≤ 10°,while 66% (44/67) of patients with lumbar indentation value>11.5 mm had the difference between pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis ≤ 10°. (3) It is concluded that both total cross-sectional area and functional cross-sectional area were significantly correlated with lumbar lordosis and the difference between pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis. Lumbar indentation value,as a new indicator for the evaluation of paravertebral degeneration, was independently correlated with the sagittal vertical axis and the difference between pelvic incidence and lumbar lordosis, and had certain predictive value for postoperative sagittal plane correction. It was a simple and practical method for the evaluation of spinopelvic sagittal plane and paravertebral muscle degeneration. The degeneration of the paravertebral muscle is related to spinopelvic sagittal balance.

Objective:To investigate the clinical characteristics and genetic etiology of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) with myogenic tumors. Methods:The clinical data of 2 children with DMD combined with myogenic tumors diagnosed in Children′s Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University in July 2021 and February 2022 were collected. The relevant literature was reviewed to summarize the clinical characteristics and explore the mechanism of the dystrophin ( DMD) gene in myogenic tumors. Results:A 6-year and 10-month-old boy with DMD (deletion of exon 45) and a 12-year-old boy with DMD (deletion of exon 51) were diagnosed with tumors. They were diagnosed with DMD for delayed motor development in the Department of Neurology of Children′s Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University. They presented with painless masses in the waist. Postoperative pathological diagnosis: the pathology and immunohistochemistry of case 1 showed an alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) and both myogenin and myogenic differentiation 1 positive; the pathology and immunohistochemistry of case 2 showed an alveolar soft part sarcoma(ASPS) and transcription factor enhancer 3 positive; both cases were myogenic tumors. Literature review (including this paper) showed that there were in total 14 cases with DMD combined with myogenic tumors including 13 cases of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) and 1 case of ASPS. All of them are male, and the age of onset of the tumors was 4-17 years. Pathological subtypes were described in 6 cases of ARMS and 5 cases of embryonal RMS, and were not described in 2 cases. The 9 cases described all had large deletions in the DMD gene which can change the reading frame of the DMD gene, and all gene mutations did not exceed exon 62. Conclusions:DMD gene with deletion may increase the risk of having myogenic tumors, and RMS is more common, which is manifested as painless mass in early stage. All DMD gene deletions do not exceed exon 62 and lead to change of the gene reading frame with severe clinical phenotype and degenerative changes in muscle function.
