OBJECTIVE: To explore the safety and efficacy of high-dose etoposide (VP-16) combined with recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) as salvage mobilization for peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) patients. METHODS: From April 2021 to May 2023, eight NDMM patients who had failed to yield sufficient PBSC during initial mobilization with high-dose cyclophosphamide (CTX) combined with rhG-CSF underwent salvage mobilization with 1.2 g/m2 etoposide combined with rhG-CSF 10 μg/(kg·d). The effects and adverse reactions of initial mobilization and salvage mobilization were analyzed. RESULTS: For salvage mobilization and initial mobilization, the numbers of PBSC collections were 16 and 18, respectively. The mean value of total collected CD34⁺ cells were (11.90±5.75)×10⁶/kg and (1.67±0.75)×10⁶/kg (P =0.0010) in salvage mobilization group and initial mobilization group, respectively. The proportion of patients with a total collection of CD34⁺ cell count≥2×10⁶/kg were 100% and 37.5% (P =0.0625), and the proportion of patients with a total collection of CD34⁺ cell count≥5×10⁶/kg were 87.5% and 0% (P =0.0156) in salvage mobilization group and initial mobilization group, respectively. For five patients who underwent high-dose CTX initial mobilization but had a total CD34⁺ cell count < 2×10⁶/kg, successful collection was achieved through salvage mobilization with high-dose VP-16. Salvage mobilization with high-dose VP-16 was scheduled 2-3 weeks after failure of CTX mobilization. Adverse reactions of high-dose VP-16 mobilization did not increase compared to the initial mobilization with high-dose CTX. CONCLUSION As a salvage mobilization regimen, VP-16 1.2 g/m² combined with rhG-CSF is safe and highly effective in NDMM patients who failed to initial mobilization with high-dose CTX combined with rhG-CSF.

OBJECTIVE: Acupuncture therapies are known for their effectiveness in treating a variety of gastric diseases, although the mechanisms underlying these effects are not fully understood. This study tested the effectiveness of electroacupuncture (EA) at acupoints Zhongwan (RN12) and Weishu (BL21) for managing gastric motility disorder (GMD) and investigated the underlying mechanisms involved. METHODS: A GMD model was used to evaluate the impact of EA on various aspects of gastric function including the amplitude of gastric motility, electrogastrogram, food intake, and the rate of gastric emptying. Immunofluorescence techniques were used to explore the activation of spinal neurons by EA, specifically examining the presence of cholera toxin B subunit (CTB)-positive neurons and fibers emanating from acupoints RN12 and BL21. The stimulation of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic neurons in the spinal dorsal horn, the inhibition of sympathetic preganglionic neurons in the spinal lateral horn, and their collective effects on the activity of sympathetic nerves were examined. RESULTS: EA at RN12 and BL21 significantly improved gastric motility compromised by GMD. Notably, EA activated spinal neurons, with CTB-positive neurons and fibers from RN12 and BL21 being detectable in both the dorsal root ganglia and the spinal dorsal horn. Further analysis revealed that EA at these acupoints not only stimulated GABAergic neurons in the spinal dorsal horn but also suppressed sympathetic preganglionic neurons in the spinal lateral horn, effectively reducing excessive activity of sympathetic nerves triggered by GMD. CONCLUSION EA treatment at RN12 and BL21 effectively enhances gastric motility in a GMD model. The therapeutic efficacy of this approach is attributed to the activation of spinal neurons and the modulation of the spinal GABAergic-sympathetic pathway, providing a neurobiological foundation for the role of acupuncture in treating gastric disorders. Objective: Sex differences have been observed in many aspects of schizophrenia, including cognitive deficits. Despite extensive research into the relationship between metabolic factors and cognitive deficits in schizophrenia, few studies have explored the potential sex difference in their association. Methods: We recruited 358 schizophrenia patients and 231 healthy controls. The participants underwent measurements of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose. Metabolic risk factors included abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia. A collection of these metabolic risk factors has been defined as metabolic syndrome. These diagnoses were based on the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program’s Adult Treatment Panel III. Cognitive performance was measured using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). A descriptive analysis, difference analysis, and linear regression model were used to identify the metabolic risk factors for cognitive function in schizophrenia. Results: Our findings revealed sex differences in the rate of abdominal obesity and hypertension in schizophrenic patients. Additionally, we observed sex differences in the association between metabolic risk factors and cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Specifically, hyperglycemia was associated with the immediate memory index score of RBANS in male patients, while dyslipidemia was associated with language, attention, delayed memory index scores, and RBANS total score in female patients. Conclusion Our results suggest that sex should be considered when evaluating the impact of metabolic disorders on the cognitive function of schizophrenic patients. Moreover, our study identifies hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia as potential targets for precise treatment by sex stratification, which could benefit the improvement of cognitive impairment in schizophrenic patients.

Objective:To explore the antagonistic effect of Fengzhecao extract against human red blood cell (RBC) hemolysis induced by wasp venom.Methods:Water extract method was used to extract dried Fengzhecao and vacuum-dried to obtain Fengzhecao extract. It was diluted into 1 g/L for next use. Wasp venom was collected from the wasp workers. A, B, O, AB type healthy blood donors' suspended RBC solution was obtain to make washed RBC solutions and adjust the RBCs count (4.0-80.0)×10 9/L (the number of RBC counted on the hemocytometer is 1-20 cells/small checker). According to treatment factors, they were divided into the normal saline controlled group (NS group; 200 μL RBC solution+20 μL normal saline), Fengzhecao extract group (FZC group; 200 μL RBC solution+10 μL Fengzhecao extract+10 μL normal saline), wasp venom group (FD group; 200 μL RBC solution+10 μL wasp venom+10 μL normal saline), and Fengzhecao extract+wasp venom group (FCD group; 200 μL RBC solution+10 μL Fengzhecao extract+10 μL wasp venom), with 10 blood samples per group of every blood type. The solutions were put into the glass test tube respectively, and then into 37 ℃ water bath thermostat. After 10 minutes, the blood cell counting plate was directly observed under the microscope and the RBCs was counted. Differences in RBC count was compared between the same treatment factors of different blood types and between different treatment factor groups of the same blood type. Results:There was no statistically significant difference in RBC count between blood types under the same treatment factors. The RBC count (×10 9/L) of the type A, B, O, AB in the NS group were 5.567±1.368, 5.146±1.690, 4.577±0.774, 5.197±1.587 ( F = 0.852, P = 0.475), the FZC group were 5.751±1.489, 5.268±1.418, 4.727±1.174, 5.298±1.229 ( F = 0.987, P = 0.410), the FD group were 0.546±0.450, 0.804±0.428, 0.679±0.283, 0.846±0.453 ( F = 1.089, P = 0.366), and the FCD group were 5.532±1.330, 5.051±1.596, 4.589±0.879, 5.140±1.492 ( F = 0.820, P = 0.492), respectively. Comparison of RBC count between groups with different treatment factors of the same blood type was done. There was no significant difference between the FZC group and the NS group, indicating that the extract of Fengzhecao extract had no effect on hemolysis of RBC; in the FD group, it was significantly lower than the NS group (all P < 0.05), indicating that wasp venom had a significant hemolytic effect on RBC; but there was no statistically significant difference in RBC count between the FCD group and the NS group, indicating that the Fengzhecao extract antagonizes the hemolytic effect of wasp venom without affecting the RBC count; however, the RBC count in the FCD group was significantly higher than that in the FD group (all P < 0.05), further indicating that the Fengzhecao extract antagonizes the hemolytic effect of wasp venom. Conclusion:Wasp venom has a significant hemolytic effect which can be effectively antagonized by Fengzhecao extract and has nothing to do with the human ABO blood type.

This study adopted the 4 pairs of simple sequence repeats(SSR) primers selected by National Resource Center for Chinese Meteria Medica (CACMS) to detect 29 populations of Dendrobium officinale samples from 9 main places of production; 5,7,4 and 3 polymorphism bands were amplified from these 4 pairs of SSR primers. The DNA identities of different populations were constructed by SSR. The 29 D. officinale populations could be divided into 4 classes. The clustering result was related to the places of production. Samples from Yunnan,Guizhou,Sichuan provinces were classified into one category,while samples from Anhui and Guangxi provinces were classified into another category. Samples from Guangdong Danxia,Zhejiang Yongkang,Zhejiang Leqing and Taining belonged to a category. PopGene (version 1.32) software was applied to calculate the genetic similarity of the 29 D. officinale populations. The similarities was between 0.403 4 and 1.0.Based on the genetic similarity,the genetic consistency included three classes,A,B and C. Samples with a similar geographical location and landform environment have higher genetic similarities,which indicate the same genetic background. This paper provides reference information to study the identification, selection and breeding of good varieties.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors for brain injury in preterm infants by a multicenter epidemiological investigation of brain injury in hospitalized preterm infants in Anhui, China. METHODS: Preterm infants who were hospitalized in the department of neonatology in 9 hospitals of Anhui Neonatal Collaboration Network between January 2016 and January 2017 were enrolled as subjects. The data of maternal pregnancy and clinical data of preterm infants were collected, and the logistic regression model was used to analyze the risk factors for brain injury in preterm infants. RESULTS: A total of 3 378 preterm infants were enrolled. Of the 3 378 preterm infants, 798 (23.56%) had periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage (PVH-IVH), and 88 (2.60%) had periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). Intrauterine distress, anemia, hypoglycemia and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) were risk factors for PVH-IVH (OR=1.310, 1.591, 1.835, and 3.310 respectively; P<0.05), while a higher gestational age was a protective factor against PVH-IVH (OR=0.671, P<0.05). PVH-IVH, NEC and mechanical ventilation were risk factors for PVL (OR=4.017, 3.018, and 2.166 respectively; P<0.05), and female sex and use of pulmonary surfactant were protective factors against PVL (OR=0.514 and 0.418 respectively; P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Asphyxia/anoxia, infection/inflammation, mechanical ventilation, anemia and hypoglycemia may increase the risk of brain injury in preterm infants.

Through resources investigation and sample collection,a total number of 392 Dendrobium officinale from 38 different populations,9 provinces were processed for measuring and observing.Fourteen agronomy characterizations like stem height,stem diameter,number of node in stem were selected for further classification.The cluster analysis was performed using Ward and Euclidean method.The results showed that the threshold of genetic distance was 2.77.Thirtyeight populations were divided into 6 groups.The factor analysis showed that,the leaf shape,stem shape,pitch length and leaf color were very important factors for classification.This study establish the foundation for analyzing the genetic relationship of D.officinale from different populations.

Objective To evaluate the imaging study of two positron emission computed tomography (PET) tracers of 18 F-fluoroethyl (FEA)-Erlotinib and 11C-Erlotinib in HCC827 tumor-bearing nude mice.Methods The 18F-FEA-Erlotinib and 11C-Erlotinib were synthesized by nucleophile substitution reactions.The dynamic micro-PET/CT imaging of 18F-FEA-Erlotinib for 1 h was performed in HCC827 tumor -bearing mice to evaluate the in vivo biological distribution and determine the best imaging time.Static scan of 18 F-FEA-Erlotinib and 11C-Erlotinib were performed after 1 h injection.The regions of interest (ROIs) were sketched and the semi-quantitative analysis was conducted by the percentage activity of injection dose per gram of tissue (％ ID/g).Results Dynamic micro-PET/CT imaging analysis revealed that the best static imaging time was 1 h.The resolution and contrast were good and the tumor boundaries were clear in the 18F-FEA-Erlotinib static images.In the semi-quantitative analysis,the ratios of tumor/brain,tumor/lung,tumor/bone and tumor/muscle ratios were 5.87 ± 1.21,2.97 ± 0.58,3.33 ± 0.60 and 3.80 ± 0.72 respectively for 18F-FEA-Erlotinib.Meanwhile,the ratios of the same tissues were 5.48 ± 1.45,1.10 ± 0.34,2.63 ± 0.54 and 2.10 ± 0.63respectively for 11C-Erlotinib.The resolution of 18F-FEA-Erlotinib imaging was better than 11C-Erlotinib images.Conclusion The uptake of 18F-FEA-Erlotinib in HCC827 tumor was visual obviously.The image resolution and the target/non-target ratio of 18F-FEA-Erlotinib was higher than 11C-Erlotinib.

OBJECTIVETo compare efficacy differences between fire filiform needle combined with mild moxibustion and gabapentin combined with sham acupuncture for postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).

METHODSOne hundred cases of PHN were randomly divided into a needle group and a medicine group, 50 cases in each one. In the needle group, pricking method of fire filiform needle was given at the Ashi points, and then mild moxibustion was applied for 15 min. In the medicine group, the oral administration of gabapentin capsule and sham acupuncture at non-acupoints in the distal end of lesions were applied. The treatment was required for 21 days in both groups. The visual analogue score (VAS) was recorded before treatment and on the 1st day, 2nd day, 3rd day, 6th day, 9th day and 12th day of treatment. The most severity of pain within last 24 h, preset severity of pain, immediate analgesia effect and starting time of pain relief were observed, also the efficacy was assessed and improvement of symptoms was observed in the follow-up visit.

RESULTSThe total effective rate was 94.0% (47/50) in the fire filiform needle group, which was superior to 86.0% (43/50) in the medicine group (P < 0.05). Compared with medicine group, the VAS of the most severity of pain within last 24 h was obviously reduced after the 2nd treatment in the fire filiform needle group while that of present severity of pain was relieved after the 1st treatment (both P < 0.05). The immediate analgesia effect in the fire filiform needle group was obviously superior to that in the medicine group in the first three times of treatment (all P < 0.05). The average time of pain relief was (3.91 +/- 0.82) days in the fire filiform needle group, which was significantly earlier to (6.53 +/- 1.13) days in the medicine group (P < 0.05). 26 cases were cured in the fire filiform needle group in the follow-up visit, which was superior to 2 cases in the medicine group (P < 0.05). The improvement of VAS, pain range and sleep quality in the needle group were also superior to those in the medicine group (all P < 0.05). The direct medical cost in the fire filiform needle group was (232.32 +/- 48.108) yuan, which was significantly lower than (466.00 +/- 41.09) yuan in the medicine group (P < 0.05). There was only one case of adverse effect in the medicine group during the treatment.

CONCLUSIONThe fire filiform needle combined with mild moxibustion could obviously relieve the pain in PHN patients, which has superior immediate analgesia effect and pain relieving time compared with gabapentin, which also has less adverse effects and cheap cost.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate relative factors affecting the efficiency of ultrasound-guided compression repair in iatrogenic femoral artery pseudoaneurysm.

METHODSUltrasound-guided manual compression was performed in 42 patients of iatrogenic femoral artery pseudoaneurysm from June 2004 to June 2010. There were 28 male and 14 female patients, with a mean age of (52 ± 5) years. These patients were presented with femoral artery pseudoaneurysm after catheterisation procedure by percutaneous femoral artery puncture and confirmed by color doppler flow image. Ultrasound-guided manual persistent compression with probe was performed at the puncture site between femoral artery and pseudoaneurysm, until completely thrombosis of pseudoaneurysm, whereas the pseudoaneurysm failed to complete closure required surgical repair.

RESULTSOut of 42 patients, 34 patients (81.0%) were successfully treated by compression resulted in completely thrombosis. There were 8 (19.0%) failures conversion to surgery. Factors associated with success were size of pseudoaneurysm (< 25 mm, 25 - 40 mm, > 40 mm; χ(2) = 13.956, P = 0.001), anti-coagulation status (χ(2) = 5.578, P = 0.010), depth of artery break (< 50 mm, 50 - 80 mm, > 80 mm; χ(2) = 14.055, P = 0.001), pseudoaneurysm communicated with common femoral artery, superficial femoral artery and profunda femoral artery (χ(2) = 8.968, P = 0.011), as well as days to presented with pseudoaneurysm (< 3 d, ≥ 3 d; χ(2) = 5.733, P = 0.012). In multivariate Logistic regression analysis, success by compression was associated with size of pseudoaneurysm (WALD = 5.34, P = 0.021) and with depth of artery break (WALD = 4.84, P = 0.028).

CONCLUSIONThe ultrasound-guided compression repair of iatrogenic femoral artery pseudoaneurysm is safe, convenient, inexpensive and reliable treatment.
