Objective: Previous studies have reported an association between cancer-related symptoms and perceived social support (PSS). The objective of this study was to analyze whether Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN), a prevalent side effect of chemotherapy, varies according to PSS level using a validated tool for CIPN at prospective follow-up. Methods: A total of 39 breast cancer patients were evaluated for PSS using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) prior to chemotherapy and were subsequently grouped into one of two categories for each subscale: low-to-moderate PSS and high PSS. CIPN was prospectively evaluated using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy 20 (CIPN20) at five time points. A linear mixed-effects model with square root transformation was employed to investigate whether the CIPN20 scales varied by PSS level and time point. Results: Statistical analysis of the MSPSS total scale and subscales revealed a significant effect of the friends subscale group and time point on the CIPN20 sensory scale. The sensory scale score of CIPN20 was found to be lower in participants with high PSS from friends in comparison to those with low-to-moderate PSS at 1 month post-chemotherapy (p=0.010). Conclusion This is the first study to prospectively follow the long-term effect of pre-treatment PSS from friends on CIPN. Further studies based on larger samples are required to analyze the effects of PSS on the pathophysiology of CIPN.

Objective: Objective of this study is to evaluate the association between high risk of depression and metabolic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia in Korean cervical cancer patients. Methods: A total of 330 women with cervical cancer were included in this study, using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2010 to 2021. Participants were categorized into two groups—high risk of depression and non-depression—based on their answers to survey items related to depression. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the influence of metabolic diseases on high risk of depression in patients with cervical cancer. Results: A total of 78 (23.64%) and 252 (76.36%) women were classified into the high risk of depression and non-depression groups, respectively. In multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusting for age, menopausal status, and smoking status, diabetes was associated with an odds ratio of 2.47 (95% confidence interval: 1.205, 5.071) for high risk of depression in cervical cancer patients. However, among the metabolic diseases, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were not associated with high risk of depression in patients with cervical cancer. Conclusion This study suggests that diabetes may be associated with a increased risk of high risk of depression in cervical cancer patients. Therefore, appropriate treatment of diabetes in cervical cancer patients may contribute to lowering the risk of depression in the future.

Peyronie’s disease is an acquired condition characterized by penile deformities caused by fibrosis of the penile tunica albuginea, leading to symptoms such as penile pain, erectile dysfunction, and other associated issues. Despite extensive research, the pathophysiology of this condition remains poorly understood, and standardized diagnostic and treatment protocols are lacking. While clinical guidelines from several professional societies exist, they do not consistently account for factors such as patient ethnicity, geography, and socioeconomic status. Thus, the Korean Society for Sexual Medicine and Andrology (KSSMA) aimed to develop recommendations tailored to clinical practice in Korea. These recommendations summarize the latest evidence, including clinical practice guidelines from various international professional societies, and represent the consensus opinion of an expert group within the KSSMA. They encompass all aspects of Peyronie’s disease, including the definition, diagnosis, non-surgical interventions, and surgical treatment options.

Purpose: Obesity and metabolic syndrome are acknowledged as key factors contributing to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Vitamin D (VitD) is a multifaceted secosteroid hormone known for its anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory properties, with its deficiency often linked to obesity. Our study aimed to investigate whether VitD supplementation could mitigate the liver pathology associated with NAFLD. Materials and Methods: The NAFLD model was developed by subjecting male C57BL/6 mice to a high-fat diet (HFD) for 14 weeks.These mice were supplemented with VitD through intraperitoneal injection at a dosage of 7 μg/kg, administered three times per week for 7 weeks. Results: HFD resulted in VitD deficiency, insulin resistance, and increased liver weight. It elevated serum levels of liver aminotransferases and triglyceride, ultimately leading to steatohepatitis with fibrosis. This model exhibited increased levels of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1, pro-inflammatory cytokines, HNF4α transcription factors, reactive oxygen species (ROS), renin-angiotensin system activity, and epithelial-mesenchymal transitions (EMT) within the liver. Supplementation with VitD resulted in the recovery of liver weight, improvement in histologic features associated with steatohepatitis, and reduction in alanine aminotransferases and triglyceride levels induced by the HFD. Additionally, it mitigated the HFD-induced over-expressions of TGF-β1 and fibrosis-related genes, along with pro-inflammatory cytokines and ROS. Notably, no adverse effect was found due to VitD supplementation in this model. Conclusion VitD ameliorates steatohepatitis within obesity-induced NAFLD through its multifaceted pathways. VitD supplementation emerges as a potentially safe, cost-effective, and direct treatment approach for NAFLD patients dealing with obesity or metabolic dysfunction.

Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated patients who underwent correction and fusion for AIS between 2005 and 2017 with at least 5 years of follow-up. We categorized patients into two groups: Group 1 (distal fusion above L2, 74 patients) and Group 2 (distal fusion at L3 and below, 52 patients). Radiologic parameters and SI joint changes were evaluated on plain radiographs obtained from preoperative to 5 years postoperatively. We also investigated other risk factors for SI joint change. Results: Analysis of demographic factors revealed no significant difference between the two groups. There was a significant difference in the incidence of SI joint change between Group 1 (5 patients, 6.75%) and Group 2 (18 patients, 34.61%), with Group 2 showing a faster increase in incidence according to the Kaplan-Meier method (p<0.0001). Preoperative lumbar lordosis (LL) and ΔLL had a significant relationship with SI joint changes [preoperative LL, hazard ratio (HR)=0.77, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.64– 0.93, p=0.008; ΔLL, HR=0.79, 95% CI=0.67–0.95, p=0.01). Conclusion After AIS surgery, patients who had fusion to the lower lumbar vertebrae (L3 or L4) experienced a higher incidence and faster progression of degenerative changes in the SI joint. Low preoperative LL and inadequate correction of LL during the operation were also risk factors for SI joint degeneration.

Materials and Methods: We analyzed data from a single-center study involving 296 patients who received monoplace HBOT.Through multivariable logistic regression analysis, we examined the relationship between various factors and the occurrence of MEB to identify significant independent risk factors. Results: The multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that an altered mental state was associated with increased odds of MEB occurrence [odds ratio (OR) 2.50; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.13–5.51]. Furthermore, patients in the emergency treatment group for HBOT, as defined by the national health insurance in Korea, were found to be 6.75 times more likely to experience MEB (95% CI: 1.33–34.20). Conclusion This study identified altered mental status and classification in the emergency treatment group for monoplace HBOT as independent risk factors for MEB. These findings can aid in developing safer protocols for monoplace HBOT chamber operations.
