Objective To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and diagnosis of imported Plasmodium malariae and P. ovale malaria cases in Anhui Province, Hubei Province, Zhejiang Province, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Henan Province from 2014 to 2021, so as to provide insights into malaria control in these five provinces. Methods All data pertaining to malaria cases reported in five provinces of China were captured from Chinese Disease Control and Prevention Information System from 2014 to 2021, and the epidemiological characteristics of imported P. malariae and P. ovale malaria cases were analysed using a descriptive epidemiological method. The duration from onset of malaria to initial diagnosis, duration from initial diagnosis to definitive diagnosis, institutions of initial and definitive diagnoses, and proportion of correct malaria diagnosis at initial diagnosis were statistically analyzed. Results A total of 1 223 imported P. malariae and P. ovale malaria cases were reported in Anhui Province, Hubei Province, Zhejiang Province, Henan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from 2014 to 2021, there were 158 P. malariae malaria cases (12.92%) and 1 065 P. ovale malaria cases (87.08%). Totally 98.53% (1 205/1 223) of the imported malaria cases were from Africa, with Angola (18.99%, 30/158), Nigeria (11.39%,18/158), Cameroon (10.76%, 17/158), Ghana (10.13%, 16/158) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (10.13%,16/158) as predominant countries where P. malariae malaria cases were from, and Ghana (23.19%, 247/1 065), Cameroon (14.74%, 157/1 065), Nigeria (9.39%, 100/1 065) and Angola (6.95%, 74/1 065) as predominant countries where P. ovale malaria cases were from. There were significant differences in the duration from onset of malaria to initial diagnosis (χ2 = 27.673, P = 0.000) and duration from initial diagnosis to definitive diagnosis of P. malariae and P. ovale malaria cases (χ2 = 29.808, P = 0.000), and the proportions of correct initial diagnosis of P. malariae and P. ovale malaria cases were 38.61% (61/158) and 56.53% (602/1 065). There were 74.69% (118/158) of P. malariae malaria cases with definitive diagnosis in county-, city-, and province-level medical institutions, and 79.25% (844/1 065) of P. ovale malaria cases with definitive diagnosis in county- and city-level medical institutions and county-level centers for disease control and prevention. Conclusions The imported P. malariae and P. ovale malaria cases in Anhui Province, Hubei Province, Zhejiang Province, Henan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from 2014 to 2021 were mainly returned from Africa and the proportion of correct diagnosis of P. malariae and P. ovale malaria was low at initial diagnosis. Persistent improvements in the diagnostic capability of malaria are required in medical institutions.

【Objective】 To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the collection of peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs) in pediatric patients with thalassemia major (TM) weighing 20 kg or less. 【Methods】 PBSCs collection data of 170 pediatric patients with TM weighing 20 kg or less from January 2013 to December 2020 in our center were reviewed. Safety was assessed by the occurrence of adverse events during apheresis procedures, and efficacy was evaluated by the number of CD34+ cells collected. 【Results】 A total of 171 PBSCs procedures were performed on 170 patients with TM weighing 20 kg or less, with a median age of (4.98±1.53) years and a median weight of (17.30±2.18) kg. The probability of collecting at least 1×106 CD34+ cells/kg during a single course of apheresis was 99.41% (169/170), with a median (5.88±4.23) ×106 CD34+ cells collected per kg of weight of the recipient. A minimum pre-apheresis hemoglobin (Hb) of 60 g/L in patients with TM weighing 20 kg or less was safe and feasible. The most common adverse event of G-CSF mobilization in TM patients is bone pain, with the incidence of 7.65% (13/170), which was higher than that of healthy children donors in our center. The most common adverse events during the collection were pain at the puncture site of the femoral vein (6.47%, 11/170) and low pressure of the fluid (2.92%, 5/170). And no serious complications related to PBSCs mobilization, central venous catheter(CVC)placement or the apheresis procedure occurred. 【Conclusion】 PBSCs collection by COM.TEC blood cell separator in children weighing 20 kg or less is safe and efficacious.

Chinese Journal of Traumatology 2022;25(3):145-150
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this study was to assess and compare elbow range of motion, triceps extension strength and functional results of type C (AO/OTA) distal humerus fractures treated with bilateral triceps tendon (BTT) approach and olecranon osteotomy (OO). At the same time, we are also trying to know whether BTT approach can provide sufficient vision for comminuted intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus, and whether it is convenient to convert to the treatment to total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) or OO.
METHODS:
Patients treated with OO and BTT approaches for type C distal humerus fractures between July 2014 and December 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. Inclusion criteria include: (1) patients' age were more than 18 years old, (2) follow-up was no less than 6 months, and (3) patients were diagnosed with type C fractures (based on the AO/OTA classification). Exclusion criteria include: (1) open fractures (Gustillo type 2 or type 3), (2) treated by other approaches, and (3) presented with combined injuries of ipsilateral upper extremities, such as ulnar nerve. Elbow range of motion and triceps extension strength testing were completely valuated, when the fractures had healed. Assessment of functional results using the Mayo elbow performance score and complications were conducted in final follow-up. The data were compared using the two tailed Student's t-test. All data were presented as mean ± standard deviation.
RESULTS:
Eighty-six patients of type C distal humerus fractures, treated by OO and BTT approach were retrospectively reviewed between July 2014 and December 2017. Fifty-five distal humerus fractures (23 males and 32 females, mean age 52.7 years) treated by BTT approach or OO were included in this study. There were 10 fractures of type C1, 16 type C2 and 29 type C3 according to the AO/OTA classification. Patients were divided into two surgical approach groups chosen by the operators: BTT group (28 patients) and OO group (27 patients). And the mean follow-up time of all patients was 15.6 months (range, 6-36 months). Three cases in BTT group were converted to TEA, and one converted to OO. Only one case in BTT group presented poor articular reduction with a step more than 2 mm. There were not significantly different in functional outcomes according to the Mayo elbow performance score, operation time and extension flexion motion are values between BTT group and OO group (p > 0.05). Complications and reoperation rate were also similar in the two groups. Triceps manual muscle testing were no significant difference in the two groups, even subdivided in elder patients (aged >60 years old).
CONCLUSION
BTT is a safe approach to achieve similar functional result comparing with OO. BTT were not suitable for every case with severe comminuted pattern, but it avoids the potential complications related to OO, and has no complications concerning with triceps tendon. It is convenient for open reduction internal fixation and flexible to be converted to OO, as well as available to be converted to TEA in elder patients.

ObjectiveTo investigate the mechanism of Sishencong electroacupuncture on preventing the apoptosis of hippocampal neurons in rats with acute sleep deprivation and its effect on anxiety behavior. MethodsAdult Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into Sham group (control group), SD group (sleep deprivation group), and EA+SD group (eletroacupuncture group). Modified multiple platform method was used to induce sleep deprivation for 4 days. EA+SD group received Sishencong electroacupuncture in each day during sleep deprivation with 20 minutes needling for 4 days. The open field test was used to detect the exploration of rats to evaluate the degree of anxiety, and the co-labeling of NeuN+ and Cleaved Caspase-3 in different regions of the hippocampus was detected by immunofluorescence staining; the astrocyte marker glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in the hippocampus was labeled by immunofluorescence. GFAP and the morphological changes of astrocytes were analyzed by Sholl analysis, and the co-labeling with C3+ and S100A+ were detected to analyze the A1 and A2 types of astrocytes in the hippocampus. ResultsOpen field test showed that the time spent in the center of rats was increased in EA+SD group, but the movement speed was decreased compared with SD group. Immunofluorescence staining confirmed that the expression of Cleaved caspase-3 on neurons in different regions of the hippocampus (CA1, CA2, CA3, DG1, DG2) in the EA+SD group was lower than that of the SD group (P<0.05). The number of intersections of astrocytes and concentric circles in the EA+SD group at 12 μm,15 μm, 18 μm and 21 μm were higher than those of the SD group. Immunofluorescence showed that electroacupuncture could regulate the proportion of C3+/GFAP+ and S100A+/GFAP+ in the hippocampus of rats during sleep deprivation. ConclusionElectroacupuncture could improve the exploration during sleep deprivation by reducing the apoptosis of neurons in the hippocampus, repairing the morphological damage of astrocytes and balancing the proportion of A1 and A2 astrocytes in the hippocampus.

OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the correlation between pretransplant serum ferritin (SF) level and prolonged or prolonged isolated thrombocytopenia (PT) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT).
METHODS:
The clinical data of 35 patients with PT after allo-HSCT were retrospectively analyzed, and 35 patients were matched according to age and sex as a controls from 424 allo-HSCT patients with normal platelet count. The serum ferritin level before the transplantation was analyzed. The potential risk factors were analyzed by chi-square test and Fisher's exact test as well as univariate and multivariate logistic regression. The survival curve was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier model to explore its clinical significance. In addition, ROC curve was used to verify the predictive power of SF.
RESULTS:
Compared with control group, the SF level in the PT group before transplantation significantly increased (P=0.001). Multivariate analysis results showed that SF level before transplantation was a risk factor for prolonged thrombocytopenia after HSCT, and patients with SF≥1000 ng / ml showed a higher risk of death (P=0.014). ROC curve showed that SF level could be used as a predictor of prolonged thrombocytopenia after allo-HSCT.
CONCLUSION
The SF level before allo-HSCT relates with occurrence and prognosis of PT in patients after allo-HSCT. Detection of SF level can provide guidance for the intervention of prolonged thrombocytopenia after HSCT.

Journal of Sun Yat-sen University(Medical Sciences) 2021;42(6):846-853
ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of electroacupuncture combined with nerve conduit transplantation in repairing long segmental defect of median nerve. MethodsEighteen adult SD rats were randomly divided into control group, conduit group and conduit+EA group, with 6 rats in each group. A 10 mm defect model of the left median nerve in rats was established. The conduit group and the conduit+EA group were bridged with the chitosan conduit at the nerve defect, while the median nerve defect was used as a control. The conduit+EA group was treated with EA at Tianquan (PC2) and Quze (PC3) on the affected limb on the 4th day after the operation. The treatment was performed once a day and 5 consecutive treatments per week for a total of 4 weeks. The conduit+EA group received electroacupuncture at Tianquan (PC2) and Quze (PC3) points of the upper limb of the affected side on the 4th day after surgery, once a day, 5 times a week for a total of 4 weeks. The grid walking test and the tape removal test were used to evaluate the recovery of motor and sensory functions of the median nerve in the three groups of rats. The expression of neurofilament protein (NF) and S100 calcium-binding protein β (S100β) at the median nerve was detected by immunofluorescence staining to observe the regeneration of damaged median nerve fibers. Spinal cord corresponding to the median nerve at C5 segment was stained with Nissl to observe the survival neurons of spinal cord. ResultsIn the behavioral test, the improvement of forelimb loss rate and contact time in tape removal test in the conduit+EA group was significantly better than that in the conduit group and the control group (P<0.05). Immunofluorescence staining showed that, in the conduit+EA group, the expression of NF and S100β at the proximal and distal ends of the median nerve defect could be seen after treatment, and the number of NF and S100β was significantly higher than that in the conduit group (P<0.05). In addition, Nissl staining showed that the number of motor neurons in the left anterior horn at the C5 segment of the conduit+EA group was significantly more than that in the conduit group and the control group (P<0.05). ConclusionsElectroacupuncture combined with nerve conduit transplantation can promote the survival of spinal cord neurons corresponding to the median nerve. Meanwhile, Electroacupuncture may better promote the growth of nerve fibers from the proximal end of the median nerve in the long segmental defect into the bridged chitosan nerve conduit to reach the distal end, thus promoting the recovery of motor and sensory functions of the injured upper limbs of rats.

Chinese Medical Journal 2020;133(5):571-576
Background::A surgical site infection (SSI) is a major post-operative complication from elective colorectal surgery; however, few studies have focused on evaluating the risk factors for SSI. This study aimed to analyze the relative correlation of medical and environmental factors as well as patient-related factors that contribute to the incidence of all types of SSI.Methods::A retrospective search for eligible patients was conducted using the patient database of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Center of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from January 2011 to August 2017. Pre-operative demographic and surgical data were extracted and recoded according to the study protocol. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to clarify factors affecting the incidence of SSI. Propensity analysis was conducted to minimize bias in the demographic characteristics to explore the prophylactic effect of pre-operative administration of oral antibiotics.Results::Univariate analysis of the baseline characteristics revealed that younger age (odds ratio [OR]: 0.378; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.218–0.657) and pre-operative oral antibiotic use (OR: 0.465; 95% CI: 0.255–0.850) were protective factors, while pre-operative anemia (OR: 4.591; 95% CI: 2.567–8.211), neoadjuvant chemotherapy history (OR: 2.398; 95% CI: 1.094–5.256), and longer surgical duration (OR: 2.393; 95% CI: 1.349–4.246; P = 0.002) were identified as risk factors for SSI. Multivariate analysis indicated that age ( P = 0.003), surgical duration ( P = 0.001), and pre-operative oral antibiotic use ( P < 0.001) were independent factors that affect the incidence of SSI. Furthermore, a propensity-matched analysis confirmed the protective effect of oral antibiotic use, with a 1-day course of oral antibiotic producing a similar effect to a 3-day course. Conclusions::Age, surgical duration, and pre-operative oral antibiotic use were associated with the incidence of SSI. However, pre-operative oral antibiotic use was the only controllable factor. From the results of our study, pre-operative oral antibiotic use is recommended before elective colorectal surgery and a 1-day course is enough to provide the protective effect.
