Objective:
To analyze the characteristics of latent classes of dietary patterns among children and adolescents in Qinghai Province, and their association with overweight and obesity, so as to provide a scientific basis for conducting targeted nutritional interventions and weight management for the local population.
Methods:
From May to October 2025, a multi stage stratified cluster random sampling method was employed to recruit 1 611 children and adolescents aged 6-17 years from Chengdong District of Xining City and Gonghe County of Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai Province. Questionnaire survey was conducted using a questionnaire developed by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and physical examination was conducted by using unified measurement standards. Latent class analysis (LCA) was performed on the food intake frequency of the participants. The χ 2 test and Logistic regression analysis were applied to explore the relationship between dietary patterns and overweight/obesity.
Results:
The detection rates of overweight, obesity, and overall overweight/obesity among the participants were 10.4%, 5.8%, and 16.2%, respectively. Latent class analysis identified three dietary patterns: modern mixed pattern ( n =399, 24.8%), low diversity pattern ( n =476, 29.5%), and traditional dietary pattern ( n =736, 45.7%). The potential category distribution differences of three dietary patterns among children and adolescents with and without overweight or obesity were statistically significant (non overweight and obesity: 22.5%, 29.1%, 48.4%; overweight and obesity: 36.4%, 31.8%, 31.8%) ( χ 2=30.69, P <0.01). Logistic regression showed that, compared with the traditional dietary pattern, the modern mixed pattern was associated with a higher risk of overweight and obesity ( OR =1.68, 95% CI =1.13-2.49); female sex was associated with a lower risk of overweight/obesity compared with male sex ( OR =0.66, 95% CI =0.50-0.86) (both P <0.05).
Conclusions
A positive association exists between the modern mixed dietary pattern and obesity in children and adolescents. It is recommended to reduce the intake of grains and unhealthy foods among overweight and obese children and adolescents, while increasing the consumption of legumes, fish, and shrimp, in order to cultivate healthy and rational dietary habits.

ObjectiveTo elucidate the effects of autonomic neuromodulators [calcium chloride (CaCl₂)-acetylcholine (ACh)] on atrial electrical remodeling and histopathological changes in rats, thereby providing evidence for further investigation into the pathological mechanisms by which autonomic imbalance induces atrial fibrillation (AF). MethodsTen 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into experimental and control groups, with 5 rats in each group. The experimental group received daily tail vein injections of a CaCl₂-ACh mixed solution for 28 days, while the control group received an equal volume of saline. Surface electrocardiograms were recorded before and after daily administration. On day 28 of administration, under isoflurane inhalation anesthesia, echocardiography was performed, and then the rats were euthanized by exsanguination under isoflurane anesthesia for tissue collection. Body weight and heart weight of rats were measured, and electrophysiological parameters including AF inducibility, conduction velocity, and conduction dispersion in isolated rat hearts were monitored using the MappingLab multichannel electrophysiological mapping system. HE staining was performed to evaluate atrial tissue architecture and inflammatory cell infiltration. The expression levels of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) were analyzed by Western blotting. Masson staining was used to quantitatively analyze the proportional distribution of collagen fibers and myocardial fibers, and to calculate the area of collagen deposition, thereby evaluating the degree of myocardial fibrosis. Wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) staining was used to evaluate morphological changes of cardiomyocytes. Dihydroethidium (DHE) staining was used to detect the level of oxidative stress in atrial myocytes. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) staining was used to detect atrial cell apoptosis. ResultsCompared with the control group, the experimental group showed obvious arrhythmias on electrocardiograms. Echocardiography after 28 days of administration revealed significant structural remodeling in the experimental group, with a marked increase in left atrial anteroposterior diameter (P < 0.05), and also showed cardiac dysfunction, with significant decreases in left ventricular ejection fraction and left ventricular fractional shortening (P < 0.01). Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed a significantly increased heart weight-to-body weight ratio (P < 0.05), a markedly higher AF inducibility (P < 0.001), a significantly slowed atrial conduction velocity (P < 0.05), an uneven isochronal map with irregular directions, and a significantly increased conduction dispersion (P < 0.01). HE staining showed that atrial myocytes in the experimental group were disorganized, with slight inflammatory cell infiltration. Western blotting showed that the expression levels of MMP-9 and IL-1β in the atrial tissue of the experimental group were significantly upregulated (P < 0.05). Masson staining showed a significant increase in collagen deposition and a significant increase in fibrosis area in the atrial tissue of the experimental group (P < 0.001). WGA staining showed that cardiomyocytes in the experimental group were significantly hypertrophied compared with the control group (P < 0.05). DHE staining and TUNEL staining revealed that the level of oxidative stress in atrial myocytes (P < 0.001) and the apoptotic rate (P < 0.01) were both significantly increased. Conclusion Daily tail vein injections of the autonomic neuromodulator CaCl₂-ACh mixed solution for 28 days can successfully induce AF in rats, accompanied by significant atrial structural remodeling, electrical remodeling, and oxidative stress.

ObjectiveTo investigate the association of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome types of primary liver cancer (PLC) with clinical features and multimodal quantitative radiological features on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and to provide a reference for the objectification of TCM syndrome differentiation and precise diagnosis and treatment. MethodsA retrospective analysis was performed for the clinical data of 312 patients who were diagnosed with PLC in The First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine from March 2020 to June 2025, and according to the TCM syndrome type, they were divided into stagnation of liver Qi group with 40 patients, stagnation of liver Qi and spleen deficiency group with 109 patients, Qi stagnation and blood stasis group with 62 patients, dampness-heat toxin amassment group with 81 patients, and liver-kidney Yin deficiency group with 20 patients. Clinical features and multimodal quantitative radiological features were compared between the patients with different TCM syndrome types. A one-way analysis of variance was used for comparison of normally distributed continuous data between multiple groups, and the least significant difference t-test was used for further comparison between two groups; the Kruskal-Wallis H test was used for comparison of non-normally distributed continuous data between multiple groups, and the Dunn’s multiple test was used for further comparison between two groups; the chi-square test was used for comparison of categorical data between groups, and the Bonferroni method was used for further comparison between two groups. ResultsThere were significant differences between the patients with different TCM syndrome types in China liver cancer staging (CNLC), Child-Pugh class, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, albumin, direct bilirubin, total bilirubin, prothrombin time, neutrophil, and albumin-bilirubin score (all P<0.05). In the stagnation of liver Qi group, the patients with Child-Pugh class A accounted for 75.00%; among the patients with CNLC stage I PLC, the patients with stagnation of liver Qi accounted for 60.00%, and those with Qi stagnation and blood stasis syndrome accounted for 59.68%, while among the patients with CNLC stage IV PLC, the distribution proportion of dampness-heat toxin amassment (27.16%) and liver-kidney Yin deficiency (30.00%) was significantly higher than that of stagnation of liver Qi (2.50%) (all P<0.05). Radiological examination showed that there were significant differences between the patients with different TCM syndrome types in the number of tumors, ascites, venous tumor thrombus, maximum tumor diameter, intrahepatic metastasis, and lymph node metastasis in the hepatic hilar and retroperitoneal regions (all P<0.05). Compared with the patients with stagnation of liver Qi, the patients with liver depression and spleen deficiency or liver-kidney Yin deficiency were more likely to develop intrahepatic metastasis; the patients with liver depression and spleen deficiency, dampness-heat toxin amassment, or liver-kidney Yin deficiency were more likely to develop lymph node metastasis in the hepatic hilar and retroperitoneal regions; the patients with liver-kidney Yin deficiency were more likely to experience multiple tumors; the patients with liver depression and spleen deficiency or dampness-heat toxin amassment were more likely to develop ascites (all P<0.05). Compared with the patients with Qi stagnation and blood stasis syndrome, the patients with liver depression and spleen deficiency had a significantly longer maximum tumor diameter and a significantly higher proportion of patients with venous tumor thrombus (both P<0.05). Furthermore, among the 184 patients with MRI diffusion-weighted imaging sequences, the patients with dampness-heat toxin amassment or Qi stagnation and blood stasis syndrome had significantly higher ADC values and relative ADC values than those with stagnation of liver Qi (all P<0.05). ConclusionThere are significant differences in CT/MRI radiological features and clinical features between PLC patients with different TCM syndrome types, among whom the patients with liver depression and spleen deficiency, dampness-heat toxin amassment, and liver-kidney Yin deficiency tend to exhibit progressive radiological features, and those with dampness-heat toxin amassment or Qi stagnation and blood stasis syndrome tend to have higher ADC values. These findings provide an objective basis for TCM syndrome differentiation in PLC.

Plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEVs) are nanoscale extracellular vesicles secreted by plant cells, characterized by a lipid bilayer structure. These vesicles carry a variety of bioactive molecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids, and play essential roles in intercellular communication and physiological regulation in plants. Compared to animal-derived extracellular vesicles, PDEVs offer several advantages, such as a broad range of sources, high biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, and low production costs. Furthermore, PDEVs have demonstrated remarkable potential as natural nanocarriers for drug delivery, due to their ability to efficiently traverse biological barriers, such as the blood-brain barrier, making them promising candidates for drug delivery systems. This review systematically elaborates on the complex composition of PDEVs, which consists of lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, the typical structural characteristics of their lipid bilayers ranging from 30 to 150 nm, and their versatile loading capabilities as drug carriers, efficiently encapsulating various types of therapeutic agents such as hydrophilic small molecules, hydrophobic drugs, nucleic acids, and proteins. We systematically summarize the recent advancements in strategies for enhancing the loading efficiency of PDEVs, which include methods such as co-incubation, ultrasound-assisted loading, electroporation, freeze-thaw cycles, and microfluidic technology. These techniques are evaluated based on their underlying principles, suitable drug types, and their respective advantages. In addition to loading strategies, we focus on the engineered approaches to achieve targeted delivery using PDEVs, such as genetic engineering modifications, chemical ligand conjugation, membrane fusion technology, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) modification. We discuss the mechanisms of these strategies in enhancing targeting efficiency, prolonging in vivo circulation time, and improving therapeutic efficacy. Further, this review highlights the application of PDEVs in various disease models, including tumor, skin inflammation, metabolic disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases, showcasing their therapeutic potential as multifunctional delivery platforms. The ability of PDEVs to encapsulate diverse therapeutic agents and target specific tissues or cells opens up new avenues for the treatment of complex diseases, offering advantages over conventional drug delivery systems. However, despite the promising applications of PDEVs, several challenges remain in their development and clinical translation. These challenges include variability in source materials, standardization of preparation processes, quality control, scalability of production, and the need for clinical validation. To overcome these obstacles, the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence-assisted design and multi-omics analysis is proposed as a way to facilitate the precise development of PDEVs. These emerging technologies hold the potential to further enhance the precision and effectiveness of plant-based drug delivery systems, ultimately advancing the field of precision medicine. In conclusion, the use of PDEVs as a platform for drug delivery represents a promising area of research with the potential to revolutionize therapeutic strategies. Their ability to encapsulate and deliver a wide variety of bioactive molecules, along with their inherent advantages in biocompatibility and versatility, makes them a valuable tool in the development of more efficient and targeted therapeutic interventions. Continued research and innovation in this field will pave the way for the clinical implementation of PDEVs in the treatment of various diseases, offering new hope for more effective and sustainable therapeutic options.

Acta Universitatis Medicinalis Anhui 2026;61(5):803-811
ObjectiveTo investigate the effect of protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) on the angiogenesis of colorectal cancer (CRC) through the Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (JAK2/STAT3) signaling pathway. MethodsThe expression and prognostic value of PRMT5 in CRC tissues were analyzed based on the cancer genome atlas (TCGA) and gene expression omnibus (GEO) databases. A total of 105 pairs of cancer tissues and matched adjacent non-tumor tissues were collected from CRC patients, and PRMT5 expression was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC); Western blot was used to detect the PRMT5 protein level in normal colonic epithelial cells (FHC) and CRC cell lines (including RKO, SW480). SW48 and LoVo cells were divided into negative control (NC) group and PRMT5 knockdown interference group. After the stable knockdown cell models were successfully constructed, the effects of conditioned medium on the proliferation, cell cycle, migration and tube formation abilities of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were detected; the correlation between PRMT5 and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) was analyzed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) and cytoplasm-nucleus separation assay were performed to verify the regulatory pathway. ResultsPRMT5 was highly expressed in CRC tissues and cell lines, which was significantly correlated with poor prognosis and pathological characteristics of patients (all P<0.05); PRMT5 knockdown could significantly inhibit the angiogenesis-related abilities of HUVECs (all P<0.05) and down-regulate the expression of VEGFA (all P<0.01). GSEA results indicated that PRMT5 expression was significantly associated with the activation of JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway (all P<0.001). PRMT5 knockdown could inhibit the activation of JAK2/STAT3, the nuclear translocation of STAT3 and the protein level of phosphorylated STAT3 (p-STAT3) in the nucleus, thus inhibiting the expression of VEGFA. ConclusionPRMT5 is highly expressed in CRC tissues and indicates poor prognosis of patients. It promotes the nuclear translocation and transcriptional activity of STAT3 by activating the JAK2/STAT3 pathway and drives the expression of VEGFA to promote tumor angiogenesis.

OBJECTIVE To observe the clinical efficacy of evolocumab combined with atorvastatin in the treatment of patients with borderline coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, 342 hospitalized patients diagnosed with borderline CHD were enrolled in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanyang Medical College from August 2021 to June 2024, and divided into control group (treated with atorvastatin, 190 cases) and trial group (treated with evolocumab combined with atorvastatin, 152 cases) according to therapeutic regimen. Blood lipid indexes, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and intravascular ultrasound of the coronary artery at baseline and after 1 year of treatment, and incidence of cardiovascular adverse events were compared after propensity score matching. RESULTS A total of 295 patients (158 in control group and 137 in trial group) were finally included in the analysis. One year after the treatment, compared with control group, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and hs-CRP levels were decreased significantly in trial group ( P <0.05), whereas high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level was increased significantly ( P <0.05). The lumen diameter, lumen area, and the minimum lumen area were significantly increased ( P <0.05), while plaque area and plaque burden were significantly decreased ( P <0.05). Overall incidence of adverse events in trial group was significantly lower than that in control group ( P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS Evolocumab combined with atorvastatin can significantly improve coronary luminal narrowing and reduce plaque burden, as well as reduce the incidence of cardiovascular adverse events in patients with borderline CHD.
9.Reactive oxygen species mediate promoting effect of fullerene C60 on DHPN-induced lung tumors
Acta Universitatis Medicinalis Anhui 2026;61(4):677-681
ObjectiveTo investigate whether fullerene C60 administered by intratracheal spraying promotes N-bis (2-hydroxypropyl) nitrosamine (DHPN) induced-lung tumor development and the underlying mechanisms. MethodsA rat lung tumor model was induced by the DHPN drinking water method. Eight-week-old male Fisher 344 rats were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 15): DHPN+Veh group (0.2% DHPN + vehicle solution), DHPN+C60-L group (0.2% DHPN + 250 μg/mL C60), DHPN+C60-H group (0.2% DHPN + 500 μg/mL C60), DHPN group (0.2% DHPN), and C60-H group (normal drinking water + 500 μg/mL C60). 0.2% DHPN in drinking water was given to initiate carcinogenesis, and 2 weeks later, different concentrations of fullerene C60 were administered by intratracheal spraying every two weeks for a total of 20 times. Two weeks after the last spraying, the incidence, number and size of lung tumors were statistically analyzed. In another mechanism animal experiment, 8-week-old male Fisher rats were divided into two groups with 5 rats in each group: C60 group and the control vehicle group. 500 μg/mL C60 or the control vehicle intratracheally sprayed every two days for a total of 5 times. Six hours after the last spraying, the lungs were removed and used for observation of C60 distribution and for detection of SOD, 8-OHdG and cytokines in lung tissues. ResultsNo lung tumorigenesis was observed in the C60-H group; the incidence, number and size of lung tumors in the DHPN+C60-H group were significantly higher than those in the DHPN+Veh group (P<0.05, P<0.001, P<0.05) and the DHPN group (P<0.01, P<0.001, P<0.01), respectively. In additional animal experiments designed for mechanistic investigation, the levels of SOD and 8-OHdG in the experimental group were markedly elevated compared with the control group (both P<0.001), with statistically significant differences. ConclusionIntratracheal nebulization of high-concentration fullerene C60 promoted DHPN-induced lung tumorigenesis; C60 led to an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, thereby elevating the potential for gene mutation. This may represent one of the mechanisms underlying C60-induced promotion of lung tumorigenesis.
