1.Dairy Consumption and Associations with Nutritional Status of Chinese Children and Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE:
This study aimed to describe frequency and quantity of total dairy consumption of Chinese children and adolescents and explore the associations between dairy consumption and nutrition status, including stunting, wasting, overweight, and obesity.
METHODS:
Participants included 28,250 children and adolescents aged 6-17 years old. A food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) including 100 kinds of food was used to collect information about frequency and quantity of dairy consumption. Determination of stunting was with a height cutoff value for age and gender, and determination for wasting, overweight, and obesity was with BMI for age and gender.
RESULTS:
Of the total sample, 36.1% of children aged 6-17 reported consuming dairy food more than once per day (⪖ 1/day). The average total dairy intake of all the participants was 126.7 g/day. For boys, dairy consumption had an inverse correlation with stunting and wasting after controlling for confounders. For girls, dairy consumption was negatively associated with stunting and obesity after controlling for confounders as above.
CONCLUSION
Dairy consumption in Chinese children and adolescents was relatively lower than that in developed countries, and was negatively associated with stunting and wasting for boys and with stunting and obesity for girls.

2.A Case of Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome in Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) may present with area postrema syndrome, which is characterized by intractable vomiting and hiccups. Hyponatremia is common in NMOSD and is mostly associated with the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). In contrast to SIADH, cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSWS) causes hyponatremia, which is associated with severe natriuresis and extracellular volume depletion in patients with cerebral disease. To our knowledge, hyponatremia associated with CSWS has not been reported in a patient with NMOSD. Here, we describe a NMOSD presenting with hyponatremia, which may be caused by CSWS following area postrema syndrome.

3.Assessing PCV2 antibodies in field pigs vaccinated with different porcine circovirus 2 vaccines using two commercial ELISA systems.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the primary causative agent for post-weaning, multisystemic, wasting syndrome. Consequently, serologic detection of and vaccination against PCV2 are important for the swine industry. Among several serological tests, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is commonly used to measure anti-PCV2 antibody levels. In the present study, we used two commercial ELISA systems to comparatively evaluate anti-PCV2 antibodies in field pigs treated with three different PCV2 vaccines. Among a total of 517 serum samples, the results of the two ELISAs were fully concordant for 365 positive and 42 negative samples, indicating 78.7% agreement. In addition, the Pearson coefficient (0.636) indicated a moderate correlation between data from the two ELISAs. Results from the farms with pigs vaccinated with the three different PCV2 vaccines demonstrated that most of the vaccinated animals underwent seroconversion. However, the increase and duration of antibody titers varied depending on the vaccine, the presence of maternal antibodies, and the vaccination program. PCV2 serologic status and anti-PCV2 antibody levels of herds from this study could be utilized to determine the best timing for vaccination and assessing vaccination compliance.

4.Oral Health of Stone Mine Workers of Jodhpur City, Rajasthan, India.

BACKGROUND: Occupational injuries cause major health problems, which the developed, developing, and underdeveloped nations worldwide are facing today. The present study aimed to assess dental caries, periodontal health of stone mine workers, and the relationship between wasting diseases and the years of working experience. METHODS: The study population comprised 510 men, selected based on the stratified cluster sampling procedure. Clinical oral examinations were carried out, and periodontal disease, dental caries, and wasting diseases were recorded. RESULTS: Workers were in the age group of 17-56 years; the prevalence of dental caries in the workers was found to be 74%, with a mean decayed, missing, filled teeth index of 2.89. A periodontal pocket of more than 6 mm was observed in 6% of the workers. CONCLUSION: The oral health of mine workers is in a poor state; steps should be taken so as to provide basic medical and dental care facilities.

5.A Case of Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome after Surgical Excision of a Giant Acoustic Neuroma.

Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome (CSWS) is defined as the development of extracellular volume depletion due to a dysfunction of the renal sodium transport system. Differentiation of CSWS from the Symdrome of Inappropriate Secretion of Antidiuretic Hormone in patients with intracranial disease is difficult because both syndromes include hyponatremia and concentrated urine with natriuresis. However, distinguishing between these two syndromes is very important because the treatment options differ. We report a 41 year-old Asian woman who presented initially with hyponatremia, and was finally diagnosed with CSWS after an operation for an acoustic neuroma. Based on this case, we discuss a possible mechanism and disclose insights about differential diagnosis thereof.

6.A Case of Renal Salt Wasting Syndrome Induced by Cisplatin for Chemotherapy.

Cisplatin is widely used for chemotherapy, but known to cause renal, auditory, hematologic, gastrointestinal, and neurologic toxicities. Hyponatremia after administration of cisplatin is related to renal tubular sodium excretion. A 71-year-old female was referred to our hospital for chemotherapy of laryngeal cancer. On admission, the patient's laboratory data were normal. The patient received for 3 days chemotherapy without complication, but presented mental confusion on the 4th hospital day. The laboratory findings were as follows; serum sodium was 118 mmol/L, urine sodium 163 mmol/L, serum osmolality 248 mmol/kg, and urine osmolality 594 mmol/kg. On physical exam, volume status was hypovolemic, so we supplied hypertonic and isotonic salines. On the 9th hospital day, she showed normal sodium concentration and clear consciousness. After chemotherapy, we should make differential diagnosis between SIADH (syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone) and renal salt wasting syndrome according to the physical examination. We report a case of renal salt wasting syndrome with severe mental change after chemotherapy using cisplatin.

7.Epidemiological characteristics of pulmonary pneumocystosis and concurrent infections in pigs in Jeju Island, Korea.

Epidemiological characteristics of swine pulmonary Pneumocystis (P.) carinii and concurrent infections were surveyed on Jeju Island, Korea, within a designated period in 172 pigs submitted from 54 farms to the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Jeju National University. The submitted cases were evaluated by histopathology, immunohistochemistry, PCR/RT-PCR, and bacteriology. P. carinii infection was confirmed in 39 (22.7%) of the 172 pigs. Histopathologically, the lungs had moderate to severe lymphohistioctyic interstitial pneumonia with variable numbers of fungal organisms within lesions. Furthermore, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) co-infection was a common phenomenon (12.8%, 20.5%, and 48.7% were positive for PRRS, PCV-2, or both, respectively, as determined by PCR/RT-PCR). Infection was much more concentrated during winter (December to March) and 53.8% of the infected pigs were 7- to 8-weeks old. In addition, three pigs showed co-infection with bacteria such as Pasteurella multocida and Streptococcus suis. The results of the present study suggest that the secondary P. carinii infection is common following primary viral infection in swine in Korea. They further suggest that co-infection of P. carinii might be enhanced by the virulence of primary pathogens or might have synergistic effects in the pigs with chronic wasting diseases.

8.Prevalence of porcine parvovirus in pigs with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome in Jeju Island.

Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), which was first identified in western Canada in 1991 and more recently in the United States, Europe and Asia, is an emerging disease in pigs. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) is the primary infectious viral agent causing PMWS, but the full expression of the disease may require the presence of other agents. It is reported that there is apparent synergism between PCV-2 and porcine parvovirus (PPV) in increasing the severity of the clinical signs and lesions of PMWS. From January 2006 to May 2008, a total of the 154 lymph node samples were collected from 4~12 weeks old pigs which had been submitted to the College of Veterinary Medicine, Jeju National University, Korea. These pigs were diagnosed as PMWS on the basis of clinical and pathological examination from 48 commercial herds in Jeju Island. Based on the immunohistochemistry, porcine parvovirus was detected in 69 cases (44.8%) from 154 weaned or grower pigs. PPV antigens were detected in the cytoplasm of histiocytic cells multifocally infiltrated in the cortex and paracortex of lymph nodes. The results of this study clarify that PPV is prevalent in pigs with PMWS on Jeju Island. Therefore PPV is one of the most important co-agents in the development of naturally acquired PMWS. This study may be helpful to the control of this disease and to epidemiological aspects.

9.Distribution and characterization of IL-10-secreting cells in lymphoid tissues of PCV2-infected pigs.

Distribution and characterization of interlukin-10 (IL-10)-secreting cells in lymphoid tissues of pigs naturally infected with porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) were evaluated in accordance with PCV2 antigen detection. After screening a total of 56 pigs showing the symptoms of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), 15 pigs were PCV2 positive and 5 pigs, which showed stronger positive signals over multiples tissues were further investigated. This study showed that in PCV2-infected lymphoid tissues, particularly mandibular lymph node, spleen and tonsil, IL-10 expression was mainly localized in T-cell rich areas but rarely in B cell rich areas. IL-10 was highly expressed in bystander cells but rarely in PCV2-infected cells. Elevated IL-10 expression was predominantly associated with T cells, but rarely with B cells or with macrophages. The results of this study provide evidence for the role of IL-10 in chronic PCV2 infection and its relation to PCV2 antigen in affected tissues. Constantly elevated levels of IL-10 lead to immunosuppression in persistent and chronic viral infections. The increased IL-10 expression observed in PCV2 infection in this study suggests that IL-10-mediated immunosuppression may play an important role in the pathogenesis and maintenance of naturally occurring PCV2 infection.

10.Immunomodulatory Effects of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in a Murine Model of TNBS-Induced Colitis.

PURPOSE: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are surfacing as a new method of treatment for various diseases that have poor outcome with drug treatments. In this study, we investigated the effects of MSCs in a murine intestinal inflammation model mimicking human Crohn's disease (CD) using 2,4,5-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS). METHODS: Colitis was induced by rectal administration of 2 mg of TNBS in 35% ethanol as experimental group compared to control group. Histological changes, surface molecules of T and B cells of the spleen and blood, and cytokine production (IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-12) were determined among 3 groups comprised of control group, TNBS group and TNBS/MSC group. RESULTS: In the mice treated with MSCs, there was a decrease in the wasting disease process and inflammatory histopathological changes. There was also a decrease in pro-inflammatory T-helper 1 (Th1) cytokines IFN-gamma and IL-12 and T-helper 2 (Th2) cytokine IL-4. Anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 increased in mice treated with MSCs compared to colitic mice. The blood CD4+CD25+ T-regulatory cells also increased and splenic CD19 B-cells decreased. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that MSCs may have a therapeutic effect in controlling the Th1 and Th2 mediated immune response in patients with CD and aid in tissue regeneration.
