Routine intimate hygiene care has a major contribution in maintaining overall urogenital and perineal health in women. However, Filipino women continue to experience a major surge in vulvar and vaginal symptoms across all age groups, in a context of major changes in lifestyles and risk factors impacting their genital health. Personal beliefs, preferences, apprehensions to discuss intimate topics with health care practitioners (HCPs), availability of cleansing products in the market, and their affordability prevent many women from discussing the role of intimate hygiene care with their HCPs. Communication difficulties and lack of robust evidence, supporting optimal hygiene recommendations are some of the challenges experienced by HCPs. Through this review, the authors discuss the following factors: (i) Differing physiological needs and pathological effects that result from changing dynamics of microflora in the vulvar, perineal, and vaginal region across all age groups of women, (ii) Importance of focusing on perianal and perineal hygiene, and bowel habits, to improve the quality of vulvar hygiene and genital health, (iii) Designing approaches for HCPs to maintain genital health in the light of intimate hygiene, (iv) Recommending improvements in HCP-patient communications to help HCPs dispel the misconceptions pertaining to intimate hygiene practices, and (v) Highlighting the antimicrobial efficacy of feminine hygiene cleansers that preserve the natural microbiome and help maintain the vaginal pH within the normal range. These strategies can fill the knowledge gaps among HCPs, women, and their caregivers’ perspectives and help achieve optimal intimate hygiene.

Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma (MEC) is an epithelial malignant tumor that was first described as a salivary gland malignancy. Though common in salivary gland, it is extremely rare in the vulva with only 2 cases reported in the English language literature and none yet in the Philippines. Due to its low incidence, prognosis and definitive management is still unclear. This is a case of a 68-year-old woman with a history of vulvar pruritus and vulvar mass at the left labia majora. Punch biopsy and review of slides revealed Invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Non-Keratinizing type. She underwent Radical Vulvectomy and Bilateral Lymph Groin Dissection; Wide Excision of Perineal Area; Protective Transverse Loop Colostomy; Gracilis Myocutaneous Flap with Identification of Right and Left Median Circumflex Artery with a final histopathology report of Primary Cutaneous MEC of the vulva with lymph node metastasis.

Two American Cocker Spaniels and one Bichon Frise were presented to our veterinary teaching hospital with an enlarged clitoris. Diagnostic imaging showed that the structure was composed of bony material. Exploratory laparotomy revealed uterine-like structures and testes which had an epididymis unilaterally. Surgical removal of internal genitalia, gonads and protruded clitoris were performed well. Histological evaluation revealed; inactive testes, female internal genital tracts with ambisexual ductal remnants, and prominent ossification in the clitoris. All 3 cases were diagnosed with male pseudohermaphroditism. In author's knowledge, this is the first report in Bichon Frise dog with os clitoris and also, it describes not common cases in small dog breeds with os clitoris.

We are going to describe the female soboliphymid nematodes, which were recovered from the stomach of a Asian badger, Meles leucurus (Mammalia: Mustelidae), in Geochang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. In February 1998, we found 2 peculiar nematodes with a cup-like organ in the anterior end from the stomach of badger. Recovered worms were fixed with 10% formalin, cleared in glycerin-alcohol solution and observed under a light microscope with a micrometer. They were 34.46 (33.43–35.50) mm long by 2.13 mm at maximum width. Cephalic sucker cup-like, 3.34 (3.13–3.55) mm wide, 2.40 (2.25–2.55) mm long, with the oral aperture and meridionally striated on the buccal capsule. Oral aperture 2.38 mm in diameter. Circumoral membrane 0.41 (0.38–0.45) mm wide. Esophagus muscular, 4.81 (4.50–5.00) mm long by 0.80 (0.78–0.83) mm at maximum width. Vulva situated at 3.13 mm ventro-anterior level from the esophago-intestinal junction. Vagina anteriad, 3.38 mm long, making a canal from the uterus to the vulva opening. Uterus single, large. Tail 0.35 (0.33–0.38) mm long. Intrauterine eggs long elliptical, 0.058–0.065 (0.062) mm long and 0.030–0.033 (0.031) mm wide. Based on the some morphological characters and host-specificity, our specimens are nearly identical with S. baturini. Therefore, the present report describes S. baturini for the first time in Korea.

This pictorial essay provides an introduction to vulvar ultrasonography, including technical considerations, ultrasonographic anatomy, and the ultrasonographic appearances of some vulvar conditions.

Angiomyofibroblastoma (AMFB) is a rare, benign, well-circumscribed mesenchymal soft tissue neoplasm redominantly occurring in the vulvovaginal region among women of reproductive age (35-45 years old). Histologically, it is characterized by presence of alternating hypo and hypercellular areas containing spindle and round stromal cells admixed with blood vessels. At present, there are 137 cases reported since it was first described in 1992. Currently, there are no published cases of Angiomyofibroblastoma in the Philippines. This is a case report of a 31 year old, nulligravid patient who presented with unilateral labial enlargement which was noted to be painless and slow growing. The initial impression was that of a benign tumor of the labia. The mass was excised and histopathologic results were consistent with the microscopic findings of Angiomyofibroblastoma. Simple excision of the mass is the only treatment, as in this case, and is noted to have extremely low rate of recurrence. The clinical importance to distinguish this unusual neoplasm from Aggressive Angiomyxoma and other mesenchymal malignant neoplasm with metastatic potential should be emphasized for appropriate management.

PURPOSE: To report a case of Thelazia callipaeda infection with preseptal cellulitis. CASE SUMMARY: A 24-year-old female presented with symptoms of conjunctival injection and ocular pain in her left eye and a parasite was found in her conjunctival sac. Using light microscopy, we identified Thelazia callipaeda and many larvae were observed in the vulva of an adult female worm. Three days later, erythematous swelling occurred in the left upper eyelid and four adult worms were found and removed with forceps. Third-generation cephalosporin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were administered orally; the eyelid swelling improved but the conjunctival injection remained. Later five and seven adult worms were removed every 4 weeks and the conjunctival injection improved with no parasites detected after the final extraction. CONCLUSIONS: In the case of Thelazia callipaeda infection, it is necessary to identify eggs and larvae and to observe the patient for more than 1 month because of postextraction growth of the larvae. In addition, the possibility of preseptal cellulitis by Thelazia callipaeda should be considered.
