1.Seroprevalence of Hepatitis A Virus in Pediatric Patients with Hematologic Malignancies after Chemotherapy and Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation

This retrospective study was performed to determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis A virus (HAV) in children and adolescents with hematologic malignancies after the completion of chemotherapy and hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Of 97 enrolled patients, 60 (61.9%) were seropositive for HAV. The seroprevalences in patients undergoing chemotherapy and HCT were 60.3% (41/68) and 65.5% (19/29), respectively (P = 0.628). No significant factors associated with seropositivity for HAV after chemotherapy and HCT were identified. Anti-HAV tests and HAV re-vaccinations can be considered in children and adolescents with underlying hematologic malignancies after chemotherapy and HCT based on the anti-HAV results.

BACKGROUND: Several factors contribute to differences in Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype distribution. We investigated the serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of S. pneumoniae isolated between 2014 and 2016 in Korea. METHODS: We collected a total of 1,855 S. pneumoniae isolates from 44 hospitals between May 2014 and May 2016, and analyzed the serotypes by sequential multiplex PCR. We investigated the distribution of each serotype by patient age, source of the clinical specimen, and antimicrobial resistance pattern. RESULTS: The most common serotypes were 11A (10.1%), followed by 19A (8.8%), 3 (8.5%), 34 (8.1%), 23A (7.3%), and 35B (6.2%). The major invasive serotypes were 3 (12.6%), 19A (7.8%), 34 (7.8%), 10A (6.8%), and 11A (6.8%). Serotypes 10A, 15B, 19A, and 12F were more common in patients ≤5 years old, while serotype 3 was more common in patients ≥65 years old compared with the other age groups. The coverage rates of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV)7, PCV10, PCV13, and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine 23 were 11.8%, 12.12%, 33.3%, and 53.6%, respectively. Of the 1,855 isolates, 857 (46.2%) were multi-drug resistant (MDR), with serotypes 11A and 19A predominant among the MDR strains. The resistance rates against penicillin, cefotaxime, and levofloxacin were 22.8%, 12.5%, and 9.4%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There were significant changes in the major S. pneumoniae serotypes in the community. Non-PCV13 serotypes increased in patients ≤5 years old following the introduction of national immunization programs with the 10- and 13-polyvalent vaccines.

PURPOSE: The fourth state of matter, plasma is known as an ionized gas with electrons, radicals and ions. The use of non-thermal plasma (NTP) in cancer research became possible because of the progresses in plasma medicine. Previous studies on the potential NTP-mediated cancer therapy have mainly concentrated on cancer cell apoptosis. In the present study, we compared the inhibitory effect of NTP on cell migration and invasion in the oral squamous cancer cell lines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used oral squamous cancer cell lines (SCC1483, MSKQLL1) and different gases (N₂, He, and Ar). To investigate the mechanism of plasma treatment, using different gases (N₂, He, and Ar) which induces anti-migration and anti-invasion properties, we performed wound healing assay, invasion assay and gelatin zymography. RESULTS: The results showed that NTP inhibits cancer cell migration and invasion of oral squamous cancer cell. In addition, focal adhesion kinase expression and matrix metalloproteinase-2/9 activity were also inhibited. CONCLUSION: The suppression of cancer cell invasion by NTP varied depending on the type of gas. Comparison of the three gases revealed that N₂ NTP inhibited cell migration and invasion most potently via decreased expression of focal adhesion kinase and matrix metalloproteinase activity.

BACKGROUND: Skin laser treatment has improved significantly and has become an effective treatment approach for many skin diseases while also having applications for beauty treatments. However, since skin laser transfers energy directly to the skin, the misuse of such treatment may result in permanent damage to skin tissues. OBJECTIVE: This survey of Korean adults, conducted to obtain their perspectives on and their treatment experience with skin laser treatment, will be used to determine the current status of skin laser treatment and to identify necessary changes to ensure proper and safe conduct of skin laser treatment. METHODS: From April 5th to April 12th, 2016, a survey was conducted to obtain information regarding the perspectives and the treatment experience of adults aged 20~59 years. RESULTS: Approximately 50% of the participants had experience with skin laser treatment, and among these, 24.7% had not received treatment at a dermatology clinic. Compared to treatment at a dermatology clinic, the danger of side effects was 1.7 times higher at a non-dermatology clinic, 2 times higher at a skin care shop, and 5.3 times higher at an Oriental medical clinic. Among patients who received skin laser treatment, 16.1% experienced side effects, and among these, 1 out of 4 patients visited a non-dermatologist for treatment of these side effects. CONCLUSION: The results of the survey showed that in order for the public to receive safe and effective skin laser treatment based on professional diagnosis, there is a definitive need to provide correct information to the public and to implement changes to ensure proper understanding of skin laser treatment among this population.

5.Clinicoepidemiological Features of Asymptomatic Moyamoya Disease in Adult Patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to document the natural course of asymptomatic adult moyamoya disease (MMD) and the factors related to disease progression to aid in treatment decisions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Among 459 adult MMD patients (aged > or = 20 years), 42 patients were included in this retrospective cohort study. Clinical records of adult asymptomatic MMD patients (n = 42) and follow-up data from September 2013 were reviewed to determine the factors related to disease progression. RESULTS: The mean age of patients at the time of diagnosis was 41.2 years (range, 23-64 years), and the mean follow-up period was 37.3 months (range, 7.4-108.7 months). Of the 42 patients and 75 hemispheres, there were 12 patients (28.6%) and 13 hemispheres (17.3%) with disease progression. There were four hemispheres (5.3%) with symptomatic progression (three hemorrhage, one transient ischemic attack) and nine hemispheres (12.0%) with asymptomatic radiographic progression. There were no relationships with sex, diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disease, family history of MMD, or family history of stroke. However, reduced initial cerebrovascular reserve capacity was observed in seven hemispheres (9.3%) in patients with disease progression. A relationship was found between disease progression and initial cerebrovascular reserve capacity (p = 0.05). None of the patients underwent bypass surgery during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: It appears that asymptomatic adult MMD is not a permanent stable disease. In particular, reduced cerebrovascular reserve capacity is an indication of MMD progression, so close regular observation is needed.

6.Nonthermal Plasma Induces Apoptosis in ATC Cells: Involvement of JNK and p38 MAPK-Dependent ROS.

PURPOSE: To determine the effects of nonthermal plasma (NTP) induced by helium (He) alone or He plus oxygen (O2) on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cell death in anaplastic thyroid cancer cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS: NTP was generated in He alone or He plus O2 blowing through a nozzle by applying a high alternating current voltage to the discharge electrodes. Optical emission spectroscopy was used to identify various excited plasma species. The apoptotic effect of NTP on the anaplastic thyroid cancer cell lines, such as HTH83, U-HTH 7, and SW1763, was verified with annexin V/propidium staining and TUNEL assay. ROS formation after NTP treatment was identified with fluorescence-activated cell sorting with DCFDA staining. The mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways and caspase cascade were investigated to evaluate the molecular mechanism involved and cellular targets of plasma. RESULTS: NTP induced significant apoptosis in all three cancer cell lines. The plasma using He and O2 generated more O2-related species, and increased apoptosis and intracellular ROS formation compared with the plasma using He alone. NTP treatment of SW1763 increased the expression of phosphor-JNK, phosphor-p38, and caspase-3, but not phosphor-ERK. Apoptosis of SW1763 as well as expressions of elevated phosphor-JNK, phosphor-p38, and caspase-3 induced by NTP were effectively inhibited by intracellular ROS scavengers. CONCLUSION: NTP using He plus O2 induced significant apoptosis in anaplastic cancer cell lines through intracellular ROS formation. This may represent a new promising treatment modality for this highly lethal disease.

8.Gender Differences in Empathic Ability and Facial Emotion Recognition of Schizophrenic Patients.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate gender difference in empathic ability and recognition of facial emotion expression in schizophrenic patients. METHODS: Twenty-two schizophrenic outpatients (11 men and 11 women) and controls (10 men and 12 women) performed both the scale of Empathic Quotient (EQ) and facial emotion recognition test. We compared the scores of EQ and the facial emotion recognition test among each group according to diagnosis and gender. RESULTS: We found a significant sex difference in the scores of EQ and the facial emotion recognition test in the schizophrenic patients. And there were significantly negative correlation between the score of the facial emotion recognition test and the scores of Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) in female schizophrenic patients. However, in male schizophrenic patients, there were no significant correlations between the score of each test and the scores of PANSS. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that the sex difference in empathic ability and facial emotion recognition would be very important in chronic schizophrenic patients. Investigation of sex effects in empathic ability and facial emotion recognition in chronic schizophrenic patients would present an important solution for constructing optimal rehabilitation program.

9.Subretinal transplantation of putative retinal pigment epithelial cells derived from human embryonic stem cells in rat retinal degeneration model.

OBJECTIVE: To differentiate the human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) into the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in the defined culture condition and determine its therapeutic potential for the treatment of retinal degenerative diseases. METHODS: The embryoid bodies were formed from hESCs and attached on the matrigel coated culture dishes. The neural structures consisting neural precursors were selected and expanded to form rosette structures. The mechanically isolated neural rosettes were differentiated into pigmented cells in the media comprised of N2 and B27. Expression profiles of markers related to RPE development were analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and immunostaining. Dissociated putative RPE cells (10(5) cells/5 microL) were transplanted into the subretinal space of rat retinal degeneration model induced by intravenous sodium iodate injection. Animals were sacrificed at 1, 2, and 4 weeks after transplantation, and immnohistochemistry study was performed to verify the survival of the transplanted cells. RESULTS: The putative RPE cells derived from hESC showed characteristics of the human RPE cells morphologically and expressed molecular markers and associated with RPE fate. Grafted RPE cells were found to survive in the subretinal space up to 4 weeks after transplantation, and the expression of RPE markers was confirmed with immunohistochemistry. CONCLUSION: Transplanted RPE cells derived from hESC in the defined culture condition successfully survived and migrated within subretinal space of rat retinal degeneration model. These results support the feasibility of the hESC derived RPE cells for cell-based therapies for retinal degenerative disease.

10.Burn Injury in Stroke Patients.

PURPOSE: To provide epidemiologic data of the burn injuries in stroke patients and to determine the most effective prevention and education methods. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who had been admitted to the burn center at the Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital between January 2002 and June 2008. Burn cause, size, depth, duration of hospital stay, rate of operation performed, outcomes and time from stroke onset to burn were reviewed and compared. RESULTS: We reviewed the charts of total 87 patients (57 men and 30 women with a mean age of 61.95+/-14.48 years). Places of burn were divided into two groups (at home: n=52, outside: n=25) and patients injured at home were more than twice than who were outside. According to etiology of infarction, patients group was divided into ischemic (n=49) and hemorrhagic (n=38) group. Most of the patients were injured from flame burn. The rate of operation for ischemic group was significantly higher than hemorrhagic group. The etiology of infarction and cause of burn were not significant to prognosis. Chronic group (defined as burn occurred 6 months after the onset of stroke) had the higher incidence of burn injuries. But, there was no significant relationship between the time from stroke onset to burn and burn cause, prognosis, rate of operation, total body surface area burned. Non-survivor group had a higher operation rate than survivor group, although there was no difference in total burn surface area. CONCLUSION: Functional recovery of stroke was not associated with burn injury in our study. Flame burn took the highest percentage of burn causes. We believe that studies pooling different center's results are need to improve significance of conclusion drawn from these data.
