Background:
Copper is a mineral that is involved in many functions og the human body and copper has antibacterial reaction. However many scientists have studied the antibacterial activity of nano copper, in our country, the lack of research is the basis of our research.
Aim:
Determination of antibacterial activity of colloidal copper (CuNP)
Materials and Methods:
The study protocol was reviewed and approved by the Research Ethics Review Committee of the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences on February 18, 2022 (Protocol No. 2022/3-02). An ionized copper solution was produced by passing an electric current (19–20 V, 3–5 A, for 24 h) through sterilized distilled water using copper plates. Ascorbic acid was then added to prepare colloidal copper. The concentration was determined using a PPM meter, and the solution was filtered through a 0.22 µm bacterial filter. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) against standard bacterial strains were determined by the broth dilution method. To determine the bactericidal time, bacterial cultures were exposed to the bactericidal concentration and subcultured hourly for 10 hours. Additionally, antibacterial activity was evaluated on Mueller–Hinton agar using the disk diffusion method according to CLSI standards, where 20 µL of colloidal copper was applied onto antibiotic disks. The plates were incubated at 37°C for 24 hours, and the diameter of the inhibition zones was measured.
Result:
The concentration of the prepared colloidal copper was 0.7 ppm. Using the broth dilution method, complete bactericidal activity was observed at 0.006 ppm against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella enteritidis, while Pseudomonas aeruginosa was completely killed at 0.008 ppm. In terms of exposure time, complete bacterial killing occurred after 2 hours for S. enteritidis and K. pneumoniae, after 6 hours for E. coli, and after 11 hours for P. aeruginosa. In addition, antibacterial activity was evaluated on Mueller–Hinton agar using the disk diffusion method according to CLSI standards. Colloidal copper increased the inhibition zone diameter of most antibiotics by 1–5 mm, particularly against P. aeruginosa. In K. pneumoniae, the activity of aztreonam and ceftriaxone was enhanced. When evaluating the inhibition zone diameter of cefotaxime against E. coli, the susceptibility result changed from intermediate to susceptible, while no significant change was observed for the other antibiotics tested. For K. pneumoniae, the addition of colloidal copper increased the inhibition zone diameter of aztreonam and ceftriaxone by approximately 1–2 mm. In P. aeruginosa, the inhibition zone diameters of most antibiotics increased by 1–5 mm; however, the activity of imipenem decreased. For S. enteritidis, most antibiotics showed an increase in susceptibility of approximately 1–2 mm, while ceftriaxone showed no observable effect.
Conclusion
1. Colloidal copper solution, at low concentrations, exhibits bactericidal activity against some Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria.
2. Colloidal copper solution shows a synergistic effect with certain drugs, enhancing their activity; however, it exhibits an inhibitory effect on the activity of imipenem.

Background:
Numerous international studies have established that the antibacterial activity of honey is attributed to its key components, including hydrogen peroxide, methylglyoxal, peptides, polyphenolic compounds, high sugar content, and acidic pH. Despite the vast consumption of different types of honey in Mongolia, there is a lack of sufficient scientific evidence on their antibacterial properties, which served as the rationale for conducting this study.
Aim:
A study comparing the antibacterial activity of honey commonly traded in Mongolia.
Materials and Methods:
The study was conducted using an experimental research design. Eight standard pathogenic bacterial strains were utilized: Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 1706, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ATCC 700699, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 35984, Salmonella enterica ATCC 13076, and Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC 19606. A total of 14 honey samples were selected for the study, comprising 11 samples sourced from the Uvs, Tuv, Sukhbaatar, Khentii, Dornod, Darkhan, Selenge, and Khuvsgul provinces of Mongolia, and 3 Manuka-type honey samples from Australia. The samples were serially diluted in broth using a 96-well U-bottom microtiter plate. One microliter of each bacterial suspension was added, and the plates were incubated at 37°C for 18–24 hours. Subsequently, the cultures were spread onto Mueller-Hinton agar and incubated under the same conditions. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined by evaluating bacterial growth inhibition and bactericidal activity, respectively.
Result:
Among the tested samples, the Manuka honey with MGO 570 and the honey collected from Tumentsogt soum in Sukhbaatar province exhibited the most potent antibacterial activity against MRSA, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 12.5% (v/v) and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 25% (v/v). In contrast, the antibacterial activity of Manuka honey with UMF 5 and the honeys sourced from Tuv, Uvs, and Khalkhgol soum in Dornod province demonstrated MIC and MBC values of 25% (v/v) and 50% (v/v), respectively. The Manuka honey with MGO 30, as well as the honeys collected from Selenge, Darkhan, Sukhbaatar, Khentii, and Rashaant and Tarialan soums in Khuvsgul province, showed comparatively weaker activity against MRSA, Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus.
Conclusion
1. The antibacterial activity of natural and cultivated floral honeys was assessed by determining their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) against eight standard bacterial strains.
2. All seven natural floral honey samples exhibited measurable antibacterial effects against the tested strains, whereas some of the cultivated floral honey samples showed no observable activity against certain bacterial strains.

Background:
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide and develops through the accumulation of genetic alterations involving multiple genes. In Mongolia, the substantial burden of CRC, limited treatment options, and scarcity of studies investigating its molecular genetic characteristics highlight the need to improve molecular diagnostics and expand personalized treatment options.
Aim:
To identify genetic variants in tumor tissues from patients with CRC and compare them with variants detected in matched adjacent normal tissues.
Materials and Methods:
This cross-sectional study was conducted between August 2023 and May 2024 in collaboration with the National Cancer Center of Mongolia, the Mongolian Institute of Human Genetics, and Happy Veritas Hospital. Eleven patients who underwent surgical treatment for CRC at the Department of General Surgery were enrolled. Paired tumor and adjacent normal tissue samples were collected from each patient and analyzed. Targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed using the MGISEQ-200 platform, covering 2,881 targeted positions across 53 cancer-associated genes. Sequencing data were processed through a bioinformatics pipeline involving quality control, alignment to the reference genome, variant calling, and filtering. BWA-MEM, GATK Mutect2, and Variant Effect Predictor (VEP) were used to identify and annotate genetic variants. Variants were comparatively evaluated according to their occurrence in tumor and adjacent normal tissues, potential functional consequences, and clinical significance.
Results:
A total of 60 genetic variant observations were identified across 11 paired CRC and adjacent normal tissue samples, including 56 single-nucleotide variants (SNVs; 93.3%) and four insertions or deletions (INDELs; 6.7%). Of these, 36 observations (60.0%) were recorded in tumor tissues and 24 (40.0%) in adjacent normal tissues. Eleven amino acid-altering variants were identified in tumor tissues. Variants in PDGFRA (90.9%), TP53 (54.5%), APC (36.4%), PTEN (27.3%), KIT (18.2%), and KRAS (9.1%) were detected in tumor tissues. The frequencies of variants in PDGFRA, TP53, and PTEN were higher in tumor tissues than in adjacent normal tissues, although the differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05; FDR ≥ 0.75). Variants detected in APC, KRAS, TP53, PTEN, and MLH1 were associated with molecular pathways involved in colorectal carcinogenesis, including Wnt/β-catenin, MAPK, p53, PI3K–AKT–mTOR, and DNA mismatch repair pathways. The KRAS p.Gly13Asp (G13D) variant was identified as a clinically relevant alteration for evaluating response to anti-EGFR targeted therapy.
Conclusion
Variants in PDGFRA, TP53, and PTEN were more frequently observed in CRC tissues than in adjacent normal tissues; however, the differences were not statistically significant. Variants in KRAS, KIT, and CDKN2A were detected exclusively in tumor tissues. The KRAS p.Gly13Asp variant may have clinical relevance in evaluating the selection of anti-EGFR targeted therapy.

Mongolian Journal of Health Sciences 2025;85(1):159-163
Background:
From the perspective of traditional medicine, researchers believe that the individual’s innate quality has
a reciprocal effect on the physiological level. The study of body-specific quality differences is important for improving
disease risk prediction, diagnosis, and treatment approaches. Therefore, explaining the features of traditional medicine
with some physiological parameters and establishing the relationship between them is clinically significant and important
for predicting disease risk and developing individualized treatment methods, which is the basis of this research.
Aim:
To establish the correlation between an individual’s innate unique constitution and specific biochemical indicators.
Materials and Methods:
The innate unique constitution of individuals was determined using electronic data, and the
relationships between their characteristics and levels of uric acid, creatinine, urea, and glucose in the blood were analyzed.
Results:
A total of 102 participants were included in the study. Among them, the Shar-Khi constitution was the most prevalent, with 28 cases (27.45%), while the Khi-Badgan constitution was the least common, with 13 cases (12.75%). Individuals with the Khi-Shar constitution exhibited the highest urea level at 4.47 ммоль/л, whereas those with the Badgan-Shar
constitution had the lowest at 4.15 ммоль/л. The uric acid level was highest in individuals with the Shar-Khi constitution
at 316.15 µmol/L and lowest in those with the Badgan-Shar constitution at 261.36 µmol/L (p<0.001).
Furthermore, individuals with the Badgan-Khi constitution had the highest creatinine level at 73.51 µmol/L, while those
with the Badgan-Shar constitution had the lowest at 63.97 µmol/L (p<0.001). The blood glucose level was highest in
individuals with the Khi-Badgan constitution at 4.59 ммоль/л and lowest in those with the Khi-Shar constitution at 4.21
ммоль/л. Kidney function indicators, particularly creatinine, significantly correlated with blood glucose levels (r=0.67,
p<0.01). Higher uric acid and creatinine levels were associated with elevated blood glucose levels. These findings suggest
that variations in urea, uric acid, and creatinine levels among different unique constitutions could be utilized to predict
the risk of kidney disease or diabetes.
Conclusion
Depending on the individual characteristics of traditional medicine, kidney and blood sugar parameters
are different and related to each other, and can assess the state of diabetes and kidney disease. Determining the inherent
characteristics of an individual is considered important for improving the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diabetes
and kidney disease.

Mongolian Journal of Health Sciences 2025;88(4):67-70
Background:
Research on lactic acid bacteria has confirmed how specific strains possess probiotic properties and impart unique sensory characteristics to food products. The use of probiotic lactic acid bacteria in many food products, thus confers various health benefits to humans when they are frequently consumed in adequate amounts.
Aim:
To determine the effect of lactic acid bacteria on the growth of tomatoes.
Materials and Methods:
The lactic acid bacteria were cultured using the Lactobacillus medium from whipping cream
and Dandelion (Taraxacum mongolicum) and identified using the MALDI-TOF MS automated microbial identification
analyzer. A solution was prepared using Lactobacillus delbrueckii isolated from whipping cream and Lactobacillus gasseri isolated from Dandelion (10^7CFU/ml), and sterilized tomato seeds were watered for 10 days with the solution, while
sterilized distilled water was used as a control. The germination rate of the seeds and the root length were measured and
recorded every day.
Results:
The solution of L.delbrueckii bacteria isolated from cream germinated 100% of the seeds, which is 4% higher
than the control seeds, while the solution of L.gasseri bacteria isolated from Dandelion germinated 100%, supporting 4%
higher than the control seeds. Seedlings irrigated with the L.delbrueckii bacterial solution exhibited an average length of
10.3cm, which was 1.3cm longer than the control (P=0.003), indicating a statistically significant difference. Similarly,
those treated with the L.gasseri solution had an average length of 11.5cm, 2.5cm longer than the control (P=0.005), also
demonstrating statistical significance.
Conclusion
The application of the lactic acid bacterial solution significantly enhanced both the germination of tomato
seeds and the growth of the plants compared to the control solution.

Innovation 2021;15(1):4-11
Background:
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women.
In the past decade, histopathological classification of lung cancer has become increasingly
important in selecting the appropriate treatment.
Methods:
All cases of lung cancer diagnosed pathologically in the last 2.5-year period were
retrospectively identified at National Cancer Center and performed by descriptive case series
design.
Results:
The average age of our participants was 62, of which 82.2% were men. A total of 214
cases of lung cancer were reported, including 142 (66.4%) squamous cell carcinoma (SCC),
34 (16%) adenocarcinoma (AC), 4 (1.7%) NSCLC, 29 (13.6%) small cell carcinoma (SmCC) and
5 (2.3%) cases of other/unspecified type. Based on only morphology, initially 32 (17.7%) cases
of NSCLC were diagnosed, whereas after immunohistochemistry (TTF-1 or NAPA positive/p63
negative, and vice versa) staining, this category reduced to 2.2%.
Conclusions
Among both males and females, SCC which is highly related to smoking was
the most common histologic type of lung cancer. Our results showed that an approach of using
only a two-antibody panel (p63 and TTF-1) might help in the reduction of diagnostic category of
NSCLC-NOS significantly.

WHO informed that across world an average of 565 young people aged 10 to 29 die every day through interpersonal violence. Some studies mentioned that anxiety was most frequently occurred as one of the psychological consequences among victims of child abuse. Recent research on effects of adverse early life experiences on central nervous system as stress systems (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis-HPA) has provided a greater understanding of the link between childhood abuse and susceptibility to anxiety disorder. Therefore, this research was done to study anxiety among abused adolescents, some physical parameters and level of cortisol in saliva.
There were selected 20 abused children and 40 non abused children aged between 11-16 years old and lived in Ulaanbaatar city. The Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale (SCAS; Spence, 1997) is a 38-item self-report questionnaire that assesses multiple symptoms of childhood anxiety disorders based on current diagnostic criteria. All participants were measured the cortisol in the saliva by Cortisol ELISA kit, Sigma,
Average age of all subjects in the study was 13.52±1.57 and 59% of them were female and 41% were male. All anxiety symptoms of case group was statistically significance higher (p<0.01) than control group. The average amount of salivary cortisol of case group was (18.65±7.08) statistically significantly lower (p<0.01) than average amount of control group (32.15±20.99).
Anxiety was more frequently occurred among abused children and blunted cortisol responses might indicate a level of impaired HPA functioning that could constitute a vulnerability to psychopathology with exposure to anxiety.
