BACKGROUND:
Motion sickness is a common transportation issue worldwide. Vestibular dysfunction has been reported to be a key etiology of motion sickness. However, there are limited technologies for alleviating motion sickness.
METHODS:
The most appropriate frequency (Hz) and level (dBZ) of pure tone for modulation of vestibular function were determined by an ex vivo study using murine utricle explants. The preventive effects of the selected pure tone on motion sickness were then confirmed by using a beam balance test in mice. The alleviating effects of pure tone on motion sickness induced by a swing, driving simulator or real car were objectively assessed by using posturography and electrocardiography (ECG) and were subjectively assessed by using the Motion Sickness Assessment Questionnaire (MSAQ) in humans.
RESULTS:
The effect of short-term (≤5 min) exposure to a pure tone of 80-85 dBZ (= 60.9-65.9 dBA) at 100 Hz on motion sickness was investigated in mice and humans. A mouse study showed a long-lasting (≥120 min) alleviative effect on shaking-mediated exacerbated beam test scores by 5-min exposure to a pure tone of 85 dBZ at 100 Hz, which was ex vivo determined as a sound activating vestibular function, before shaking. Human studies further showed that 1-min exposure to a pure tone of 80-85 dBZ (= 60.9-65.9 dBA) at 100 Hz before shaking improved the increased envelope areas in posturography caused by the shakings of a swing, a driving simulator and a vehicle. Driving simulator-mediated activation of sympathetic nerves assessed by the heart rate variable (HRV) and vehicle-mediated increased scores of the MSAQ were improved by pure tone exposure before the shaking.
CONCLUSION:
Since the exacerbated results of posturography and HRV reflect shaking-mediated imbalance and autonomic dysfunction, respectively, the results suggest that the imbalance and autonomic dysregulation in motion sickness could be improved by just 1-min exposure to a pure tone with daily exposable sound pressure levels.

Fenugreek is a kind of Chinese herbal medicine with great development prospects. At present, there are many modern reports on its components extraction, quality standards, processing technology and pharmacological effects. However, there is still a lack of research on sorting out and analyzing the relevant ancient records, and people's herbological cognition of fenugreek is still controversial and incomplete. In this study, through systematic review and analysis of ancient records, the names, original plant, processing methods and properties(including nature, flavor, meridian tropism, action, application, toxicity and contraindication)of fenugreek were comprehensively verified for the first time, which provided a herbological reference for further development, utilization and in-depth study of Fenugreek. It is found that fenugreek has several names such as Kudou,Luba,Huba and Jidou.Based on analyzing the descriptions and pictures of fenugreek original plant in ancient records, there is a strong likelihood that the ancient and modern medicinal fenugreek belong to the same species. In addition to the current common method of stir-frying with salt solution, the ancient books also recorded eight processing methods of fenugreek, such as stir-frying,steaming,baking,and calcining.According to the research of properties,it is found that fenugreek is warm-hot in nature, bitter, sweet, and pungent in flavor, and attributive to the kidney, stomach, liver and bladder meridians. In addition to the efficacy recorded in pharmacopoeia, this study also complemented fenugreek's actions of"improving hearing and eyesight, guiding fire to origin"and application of"fullness and discomfort in abdomen and hypochondrium".According to the textual research of toxicity and contraindication, fenugreek has been recorded as non-toxic in the past dynasties, but it should be used cautiously in the excess-heat syndrome,Yin deficiency syndrome, and pregnant women.

Well water could be a stable source of drinking water. Recently, the use of well water as drinking water has been encouraged in developing countries. However, many kinds of disorders caused by toxic elements in well drinking water have been reported. It is our urgent task to resolve the global issue of element-originating diseases. In this review article, our multidisciplinary approaches focusing on oncogenic toxicities and disturbances of sensory organs (skin and ear) induced by arsenic and barium are introduced. First, our environmental monitoring in developing countries in Asia showed elevated concentrations of arsenic and barium in well drinking water. Then our experimental studies in mice and our epidemiological studies in humans showed arsenic-mediated increased risks of hyperpigmented skin and hearing loss with partial elucidation of their mechanisms. Our experimental studies using cultured cells with focus on the expression and activity levels of intracellular signal transduction molecules such as c-SRC, c-RET, and oncogenic RET showed risks for malignant transformation and/or progression arose from arsenic and barium. Finally, our original hydrotalcite-like compound was proposed as a novel remediation system to effectively remove arsenic and barium from well drinking water. Hopefully, comprehensive studies consisting of (1) environmental monitoring, (2) health risk assessments, and (3) remediation will be expanded in the field of environmental health to prevent various disorders caused by environmental factors including toxic elements in drinking water.

BACKGROUND:
Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) testing is a strong tool that enables objective determination of balance functions in humans. However, it remains unknown whether cVEMP correctly expresses vestibular disorder in mice.
OBJECTIVE:
In this study, correlations of cVEMP with scores for balance-related behavior tests including rotarod, beam, and air-righting reflex tests were determined in ICR mice with vestibular disorder induced by 3,3'-iminodipropiontrile (IDPN) as a mouse model of vestibular disorder.
METHODS:
Male ICR mice at 4 weeks of age were orally administered IDPN in saline (28 mmol/kg body weight) once. Rotarod, beam crossing, and air-righting reflex tests were performed before and 3-4 days after oral exposure one time to IDPN to determine balance functions. The saccule and utricles were labeled with fluorescein phalloidin. cVEMP measurements were performed for mice in the control and IDPN groups. Finally, the correlations between the scores of behavior tests and the amplitude or latency of cVEMP were determined with Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Two-tailed Student's t test and Welch's t test were used to determine a significant difference between the two groups. A difference with p < 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance.
RESULTS:
After oral administration of IDPN at 28 mmol/kg, scores of the rotarod, beam, and air-righting reflex tests in the IDPN group were significantly lower than those in the control group. The numbers of hair cells in the saccule, utricle, and cupula were decreased in the IDPN group. cVEMP in the IDPN group was significantly decreased in amplitude and increased in latency compared to those in the control group. cVEMP amplitude had significant correlations with the numbers of hair cells as well as scores for all of the behavior tests in mice.
CONCLUSIONS
This study demonstrated impaired cVEMP and correlations of cVEMP with imbalance determined by behavior tests in a mouse model of vestibular disorder.

Objective To explore the effect of electroacupuncture at Weizhong (BL40) acupoint on the expression of Bcl-xL and Bax in rats with lumbar disc degeneration. Methods Thirty male adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham-operated group (n= 10), model group (n=10), and electroacupuncture group (n=10). The lumbar disc degeneration model was established by puncturing the annulus fibrosis in the model group and electroacupuncture group. One month after modeling, the electroacupuncture group was electroacupunctured at Weizhong acupoint for four weeks. HE staining was used to observe the pathological changes. Immunohistochemical staining was used to observe the expression of Bax in the lumbar disc tissue. Western blotting was used to detect the expression of Bcl-xL and Bax protein. Results HE staining showed that the degrees of lumbar disc degeneration from light to severe was ranged as: the sham-operated group, the electroacupuncture group and the model group. The expression of Bcl-xL was lower (P<0.05), and the expression of Bax was higher (P<0.01) in the model group than in the sham-operated group, which was opposite (P<0.01) in the electroacupuncture group than in the model group. Conclusion Electroacuponcture at Weizhong may upregulate the expression of Bcl-xL and downregulate the expression of Bax in rats with lumbar disc degeneration.
