Background:
s/Aims: The critical view of safety (CVS) prevents bile duct injury, but severe inflammation hinders its achievement. This study evaluated the parkland grading scale (PGS) as a real-time intraoperative predictor of CVS attainment in a Southeast Asian population, establishing standardized clinical data for future artificial intelligence applications.
Methods:
This prospective observational study (January–June 2025) included 88 consecutive patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy by a single surgeon. PGS was assessed upon initial laparoscopic inspection. We analyzed correlations between PGS, CVS attainment (Strasberg’s criteria), operative time, and bail-out procedures using Spearman’s correlation and multivariate logistic regression.
Results:
Severe inflammation (PGS grade 4–5) was observed in 31.8% of patients. PGS exhibited a strong negative correlation with CVS score (p = −0.652; p < 0.001) and strong positive correlations with operative time and blood loss. A PGS threshold of 4 accurately predicted CVS failure (area under the curve = 0.863). Bail-out procedures were necessary in 11 cases (12.5%), all occurring in the PGS ≥ 4 group. Advanced age and diabetes mellitus were independent risk factors for CVS failure.
Conclusions
The PGS serves as a precise intraoperative early warning system. A score ≥ 4 indicates a significant risk of CVS failure, prompting safer bail-out strategies. Additionally, this study provides a standardized dataset vital for training future autonomous surgical risk assessment models.

Case Report Open Access 15 Methaemoglobinaemia is a rare but potentially life -threatening cause of hypoxemia that may be overlooked in emergency settings. We report a case of acquired methaemoglobinaemia in a 36 - year-old man following inhalation of an alkyl nitrite –containing recreational product (“Super Rush ”). The patient presented with cyanosis and hypoxemia on pulse oximetry despite minimal symptoms and preserved arterial oxygen tension. Diagnosis was confirmed by co -oximetry demonstrating elevated methaemoglobin levels. Prompt treatment with intravenous methylene blue led to rapid clinical and biochemical improvement. This case highlights the importance of suspecting and recognising recreational inhalants as a cause of methaemoglobinaemia and the utility of co -oximetry in patients with unexplained cyanosis and a saturation gap

Objective:
This study aims to evaluate and compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of biportal endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (BE-TLIF) using banana-shaped versus straight interbody cages. BE-TLIF has emerged as a minimally invasive technique for treating lumbar spondylolisthesis. Banana-shaped and straight cages are the most commonly used cage types in BE-TLIF; however, their relative clinical and radiological outcomes remain unclear.
Methods:
This retrospective cohort study included 34 patients undergoing single-level BE-TLIF from January 2023 to May 2024. Seventeen patients received banana-shaped cages (group A) and 17 received straight cages (group B). Radiological assessments included disc height (DH), segmental lordosis angle (SLA), lumbar lordosis angle, cage position, and subsidence. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the visual analogue scale (VAS) for back and leg pain and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Fusion status was evaluated at 12 months postoperatively using computed tomography according to the modified Bridwell grading system.
Results:
Both groups demonstrated significant postoperative improvements in VAS and ODI scores, with no statistically significant differences between the groups. Radiological outcomes, including restoration of DH and SLA, were slightly better in the banana-shaped cage group, but this difference did not reach statistical significance. Straight cages were more often placed anteriorly, whereas banana-shaped cages tended to occupy the midlateral position. Fusion rates were comparable (100% vs. 94.1%, p>0.05), and subsidence occurred in 23.5% of cases in both groups.
Conclusion
Despite differences in cage positioning, banana-shaped and straight cages yielded comparable clinical and radiological outcomes in BE-TLIF. Either cage type can be effectively utilized in BE-TLIF, providing flexibility in surgical planning, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Purpose:
Although some immune protection from close contact with individuals who have coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been documented, there is limited data on the seroprevalence of antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in individuals who were in lockdown with confirmed COVID-19 cases. This study investigated immunogenicity against SARS-CoV-2 in household members and people who lived near home-quarantined patients with COVID-19.
Materials and Methods:
This cross-sectional study was conducted during the community-based care that took place during lockdowns in District 10, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from July to September 2021. SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels were determined in index cases of COVID-19, household contacts, and a no-contact group from the same area.
Results:
A total of 770 participants were included (355 index cases, 103 household contacts, and 312 no contacts). All index cases were unvaccinated, but >90% of individuals in the household and no-contact groups had received ≥1 vaccine dose. SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies (Nabs) were present in >77% of unvaccinated index cases versus 64%/65.4% in the householdo-contact groups (p=0.001). Antibody concentrations in unvaccinated index cases were significantly higher than those in household contacts and no contacts, with no difference between the latter groups. In all cases, antibody levels declined markedly ≥6 weeks after infection, and failed to persist beyond this time in the household and no-contact groups.
Conclusion
Community-based care may have helped to create community immunogenicity, but Nabs did not persist, highlighting a need for vaccination for all individuals before, or from 6 weeks after, infection with SARS-CoV-2.

Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) is a perennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family originating from the Mediterranean region. In Vietnam, there are some varieties of artichoke which are extensively cultivated and propagated in highland areas, however, there have been limited detailed scientific publications on the chemical composition and biological activity of artichoke grown in Vietnam. Therefore, this study provides a detailed description of the extraction, isolation, and structural determination of 20 natural secondary metabolites present in harvested artichoke. The antioxidant activity of the extract and the 9 isolated compounds are tested in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging and ex vivo malondialdehyde model. Among the selected compounds, 1-caffeoylquinic acid, 3-caffeoylquinic acid, chlorogenic acid, 4-caffeoylquinic acid, cynarin, 1,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid, 4,5-di-caffeoylquinic acid, cynaroside, and scolymoside exhibited strong radical scavenging activity with IC50 values ranging from 5.7 to 61.6 µM. In the malondialdehyde assay, 1,3-dicaffeoylquinic acid (or cynarin) showed the strongest activity with an IC50 value of 24.7 µM, followed by 1,5-di-caffeoylquinic acid (66.8 µM), and 4,5-di-caffeoylquinic acid (127.3 µM). This outcome contributes to establishing a database on the phytochemical and antioxidant activity of the Vietnamese artichoke.

In this study, twenty-five yeast strains were isolated from soil samples collected in the gold mining ore in Gia Lai, Vietnam. Among them, one isolate named GL1 T could highly tolerate Cu 2+ up to 10 mM, and the isolates could also grow in a wide range of pH (3–7), and tem perature (10–40 ℃). Dried biomass of GL1 was able to remove Cu 2+ effectively up to 90.49% with a maximal biosorption capacity of 18.1 mg/g at pH 6, temperature 30 ℃, and incuba tion time 60 min. Sequence analysis of rDNA indicated this strain was closely related to Rhodotorula mucilaginosa but with 1.53 and 3.46% nucleotide differences in the D1/D2 domain of the 28S rRNA gene and the ITS1-5.8S rRNA gene-ITS2 region sequence, respect ively. Based on phylogenetic tree analysis and the biochemical characteristics, the strain appears to be a novel Rhodotorula species, and the name Rhodotorula aurum sp. nov. is pro posed. This study provides us with more information about heavy metal-tolerant yeasts and it may produce a new tool for environmental control and metal recovery operations.

Background: Hypertension is a common disease in adults, also the leading cause of cardiovascular disease and premature death worldwide. The prevalence of hypertension has increased, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Therefore, hypertension screening is important to provide the basis and evidence for the development of timely intervention policies and programs. The objective of the “May Measurement Month” 2022 program is to investigate the prevalence of hypertension, drug treatment and blood pressure control in people in Thua Thien Hue province and to assess the risk factors surrounding hypertension. Subjects and Methods: This cross–sectional study collected data from volunteer adults (≥ 18 years old) in Thua Thien Hue province from 7/2022 to 8/2022. Sitting blood pressure had been measured in triplicate according to standardized specified methods of the International Society of Hypertension. Results: Average age 54.07 ± 18.17, there were 627 people (23.4%) with hypertension at the time of screening, 245 of which (39.1%) had never been diagnosed with hypertension before screening at the time. 724 people were on treatment with 1 or more types of drug, however, there were 337 people (46.5%) having their blood pressure not controlled. The statistics showed that 84.9% of volunteers were using at least 1 drug to treat hypertension. Related factors of hypertension are age, sex, overweight/obesity status, smoking, medical history of diabetes and medical history of COVID-19. The rate of subjects who had history of COVID-19 was 36.4%, including 31.6% of hypertension patients. Conclusion: The hypertension percentage of Thua Thien Hue population is still high and the rate of blood pressure control is still limited. There is a relationship between hypertension proportion and history of COVID-19. It is necessary to publish timely intervention measures to reduce the rate of hypertension and its risks to people.

ASEAN Journal of Psychiatry 2023;24(9):1-12
Although the need for social and emotional development has existed for decades,
implementing Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in schools continues to get considerable
attention as newer generations enter the educational system. The demand for development
is presently increasing daily. No one challenges the significance of social-emotional learning
and the influence of organizations on adolescent development today. Social-emotional
learning matches accurately with the priorities in modern schools. In Vietnam, quantitative
research was conducted on 350 high school students. This research aimed to determine how
students evaluate the implementation of the Social-emotional learning model in soft skills
education. The results revealed students’ interest in implementing the social-emotional
learning model into soft skills education. In addition, the results indicated the obstacles
to implementing the social-emotional learning model in soft skills education. This study’s
findings suggested that school leaders and background educators should implement the
social-emotional learning model and support, monitor, and evaluate program efficacy to
ensure program objectives are reached and students acquire social and emotional abilities.
In addition, the study suggested that specific strategies are necessary to limit the factors
that prevent the implementation of the social-emotional learning model in high schools.
