Journal of Veterinary Science 2026;27(1):e7-
Objective:
The objective of this study was to establish reference ranges related to the feet of normal Jeju horses by measuring the angles and length of the hoof, and the Hounsfield Unit (HU) value of soft tissues in the foot.
Methods:
Sixteen normal Jeju horses (mean age: 4.25 years; mean body weight: 282.06 kg) without lameness were examined using CT. After CT scanning, the angles and lengths of the hoof, such as hoof width and dorsal hoof wall angle, and the HU values of the soft tissues, such as the deep digital flexor tendon, were measured.
Results:
We identified significant differences in the HU values of overall soft tissues between the forelimbs and hindlimbs, and between the medial and lateral parts (p < 0.05). Length measurements showed no differences between left and right limbs or between medial and lateral parts, but significant fore–hind differences were found in most parameters (p < 0.05).Angle measurements revealed significant differences between left and right limbs and between fore- and hindlimbs, with an additional medial–lateral difference in the left hindlimb (p < 0.05).
Conclusions
and Relevance: The CT-based reference values established in this study provide valuable breed-specific data that may support assessment of hoof conformation and interpretation of CT findings in Jeju horses.

Journal of Veterinary Clinics 2025;42(1):49-54
A 4-year-old thoroughbred mare was referred to the Jeju National University Equine Hospital as it exhibited stallion-like behavior and was unmanageable during training. A transrectal ultrasound revealed an enlarged left ovary. We decided on a standing laparoscopic ovariectomy through the left flank. Three portals were positioned to permit triangulation for optimal visualization with minimal incisions. The enlarged ovary was resected successfully. Histological examination confirmed the presence of a fibroma. The mare recovered without complications and returned to racing within 3 months post-surgery. The successful outcome seen in this mare indicates that laparoscopic surgery has multiple advantages, including faster recovery times and minimal scarring. This approach is recommended for mares presenting with ovarian fibromas, particularly those intended for a future career in athletics.

Meningioma is one of the most common types of benign primary brain tumors in older adults, and multiple meningiomas are reported in fewer than 1% to 10% of cases. However, there is no definitive treatment guideline for patients with multiple meningiomas. An 80-year-old man presented with abruptly impaired cognition and was found to have two distinct meningiomas located in the temporal and frontal lobes. A single frontotemporal craniotomy was performed to remove both tumors. Pathological analysis revealed different subtypes and World Health Organization grades for each mass. The patient showed symptomatic improvement, experienced no postoperative complications, and exhibited no signs of recurrence during a 1-year follow-up period with evaluations at 3-month intervals. Despite the absence of a standard treatment for multiple meningiomas, surgical resection in a single procedure is feasible in selected patients.

Objective:
Decompression with instrumented fusion is a common approach for treating spinal metastatic disease. However, in many cases, poor bone quality and compromised general condition increase the likelihood of mechanical failure and other complications. This study investigated complications, including those related to surgery, following decompression and fusion in patients with spinal metastatic disease.
Methods:
A study at a single tertiary medical center focusing on surgical details and perioperative complications was performed on 35 patients who underwent spinal surgery due to metastatic spinal disease based on a review of a prospective database. Data on patients' underlying conditions and the status of the primary tumors were collected, and various complications that occurred within the first month after surgery were analyzed.
Results:
During the study, 35 patients (mean age, 66.5 years; 26 men) were enrolled. The most frequent primary cancers were lung (34%) and prostate cancer (17%), followed by liver and breast cancer and others. The overall complication rate was 37% (14% surgery-related complications, 23% general complications). In all cases, surgery was performed due to lower extremity weakness, and 59% of patients showed improvements in motor function after surgery. Furthermore, 23% of patients regained the ability to walk.
Conclusion
Surgery for spinal metastasis is frequently performed as an emergency due to the severity of symptoms such as lower extremity weakness. Despite a high risk of acute complications, the procedure has significant benefits, including improvement in weakness and recovery of walking ability. Therefore, proactive treatment using appropriate surgical techniques is recommended.

OBJECTIVES:
Inhalation exposure to humidifier disinfectants has resulted to various types of health damages in Korea. To determine the epidemiological correlation necessary for presuming the legal causation, we aimed to develop a method to synthesize the entire evidence.
METHODS:
Epidemiological and toxicological studies are systematically reviewed. Target health problems are selected by criteria such as frequent complaints of claimants. Relevant epidemiologic studies are reviewed and the risk of bias and confidence level of the total evidence are evaluated. Toxicological literature reviews are conducted on three lines of evidence including hazard information, animal studies, and mechanistic studies, considering the source-to-exposure-to-outcome continuum. The confidence level of the body of evidence is then translated into the toxicological evidence levels for the causality between humidifier disinfectant exposure and health effects. Finally, the levels of epidemiological and toxicological evidence are synthesized.
RESULTS:
Under the Special Act revised in 2020, if the history of exposure and the disease occurred/worsened after exposure were approved, and the epidemiological correlation between the exposure and disease was verified, the legal causation is presumed unless the company proves the evidence against it. The epidemiological correlation can be verified through epidemiological investigations, health monitoring, cohort investigations and/or toxicological studies. It is not simply as statistical association as understood in judicial precedents, but a general causation established by the evidence as a whole, i.e., through weight-of-the-evidence approach.
CONCLUSIONS
The weight-of-the-evidence approach differs from the conclusive single study approach and this systematic evidence integration can be used in presumption of causation.

Korean Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine 2022;30(2):196-202
Objectives:
:The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess the degree of Graves’ Disease affecting mental health through the results of multiphasic military personality inventory (MPI) in 19-year-old men.
Methods:
:We collected and analyzed the results of the MPI for 592 healthy subjects and 148 Graves’ disease patients among the 19-year-old men who visited the Military Manpower Administration from February 2008 to January 2010.
Results:
:Among demographic characteristics, both Graves’ disease and control group are 19-year-old men. Educational level, socioeconomic status, parental relationship, and BMI were not statistically different between the two groups (χ2 =0.089, p=0.766; χ2 =5.090, p=0.278; χ 2 =5.988, p=0.112 ; t=-0.635, p=0.526). In the MPI, among validity scales, the score of the faking-good subscale was significantly lower in the Graves’ group (t=3.507, p<0.001), but in the faking-bad and infrequency subscales scores were not significantly different between two groups (t=-1.700, p=0.090; t=-0.519, p=0.604). Among the neurosis scale, anxiety, depression, somatization, and personality disor-der subscale scores were all significantly higher in Graves’ disease group (t=-3.323, p<0.001; t=-4.210, p<0.001; t=-6.202, p<0.001; t=-2.872, p<0.01). Among the psychopath scale, each score of schizophrenia and paranoia subscales were not statistically different between the two groups (t=-0.158, p=0.874; t=-0.846, p=0.398).
Conclusions
:According to MPI result, we can confirm that Graves’ disease patients in 19-year-old-men may appear features such as anxiety, depression, somatization and personality tendency (introversion or impulsivity) than the control group.

Health Policy and Management 2022;32(2):190-204
Background:
In Korea, the population is rapidly aging, and the types of households for the elderly are also diversifying. The self-rated health of the elderly is a valuable health indicator that can comprehensively represent the overall quality of life along with physical, mental, and functional health. On the other hand, studies on the association between household type and self-rated health of the elderly are still insufficient. Thus, this study analyzed the association between household type and self-rated health by gender in Korean older adults.
Methods:
Using data from the analysis of the National Survey of Older Koreans 2017, 10,299 elderly people aged 65 and over were targeted. For the accuracy of the analysis data, 9,910 people were selected as the study sample by excluding proxy responses, those diagnosed with dementia, and non-response. And technical analysis, univariate analysis using the Rao-Scott chi-square test, and logical regression analysis involving survey characteristics were conducted by gender.
Results:
According to the adjusted model with all variables, in both men and women, the odds ratio of self-rated health ‘bad’ in ‘couple (with ill spouse)’ was significantly higher than ‘couple (with spouse)’. It was 2.54 (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.05–3.15) for men and 2.11 (95% CI, 1.70–2.62) for women. In addition, the odds ratio of self-rated health ‘bad’ in ‘living with adult children’ was 1.43 (95% CI, 1.09–1.87) for men and 1.42 (95% CI, 1.15–1.75) for women, which was more significant in women than men.
Conclusion
This study states that there is an association between gender, household type, and self-rated health of the elderly, and the health of a spouse and cohabitation with children have a significant effect on self-rated health. As a result, in order to improve the health status of the elderly, health promotion and health care policies involving the characteristics of the elderly’s gender and household type are needed.

Health Policy and Management 2021;31(2):158-1742
Background:
Metabolic syndrome has been known as a risk of cardiovascular disease. Meanwhile, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is used as a predictor of cardiovascular disease. In this paper, we aimed to investigate the association between hs-CRP and metabolic syndrome.Method: A total of 7,633 were chosen as the study population from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey dataset (2016–2017). Our dependent variable was whether an individual had metabolic syndrome or not, and the independent variable of interest was hs-CRP which was categorized into three groups. The chi-square tests and hierarchical logistic regression analyses reflecting survey characteristics were conducted. All analyses were stratified by gender.
Results:
According to the adjusted model with all covariates, compared to individuals having the low risk of hs-CRP, those having its average risk were more likely to have metabolic syndrome in men (odds ratio [OR], 1.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12–1.76) and women (OR, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.33–2.16). Individuals having the high risk was not significantly different in men; however, they were more likely to have metabolic syndrome in women (OR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.28–3.23).
Conclusion
In an upcoming aging society, it is important to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome to improve population health. This study suggests that hs-CRP may be used as a marker of the risk of metabolic syndrome in a gender-specific way, thereby contributing to enhancing awareness of the risk of metabolic syndrome among the general public.

Health Policy and Management 2021;31(1):74-90
Background:
It is getting important to improve the oral health status of the elderly because oral health status may affect their health status of the whole body. In this respect, we aimed to explore the association of oral health status and behavior factors with self-rated health status by sex.
Methods:
Using the data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for health surveys and oral examinations (2016–2018), we analyzed a total of 3,070 people aged 65 or older (men: 1,329; women: 1,741). Our dependent variable, self-rated health status, was divided into two groups: not good (bad and very bad) and good (very good, good, and fair), whereas our independent variables of interest were oral health status and behavior factors. In addition to descriptive analysis and the Rao-Scott chi-square test, reflecting survey characteristics, we conducted hierarchical multivariable logistic regression analyses adjusted for socio-demographics and health status and behavior factors. All analyses were stratified by sex.
Results:
The proportion of people having ‘not good’ self-rated health was 36.5% in women but 24.5% in men. In a model adjusted for all covariates, the self-rated health status showed significant association with the self-rated oral health status. For example, in men, the risk of having ‘not good’ self-rated health was high in people having ‘poor’ (odds ratio [OR], 5.31; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.34–12.03) self-rated oral health status and in those having ‘fair’ (OR, 4.03; 95% CI, 1.68–9.70) in comparison with those having ‘good’ self-rated oral health status. Dental status regarding speaking difficulty seemed to be very important in influencing self-rated health status. For instance, in women, compared to people having ‘no discomfort’ speaking difficulty, the risk of having ‘not good’ self-rated health was high in people having ‘not bad’ (OR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.14–2.24) and ‘discomfort’ (OR, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.30–2.47) speaking difficulty. The covariates significantly associated with the risk of having ‘not good’ self-rated health were: physical activity, chronic disease, stress, and body mass index in both sexes; health insurance type and drinking only in men; and economic activity only in women.
Conclusion
Oral health status and behavioral factors were associated with self-rated health status among the elderly, differently by sex. This suggests that public health policies toward better health in the elderly should take their oral health status and oral health behaviors into account in a sex-specific way
