Background:
Hair drying is a routine cosmetic practice; however, excessive heat exposure and non-uniform airflow can compromise cuticle integrity, degrade hair sensory properties, and induce scalp discomfort. This study aimed to (i) identify a practical thermal window that minimizes perturbation of hair fiber surface and quantify late-stage thermal amplification during the drying process using percentage-based analysis.
Methods:
Temperature-dependent hair fiber surface morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after controlled exposure to 41°C, 60°C, 80°C, and 90°C using virgin and chemically damaged hair. The drying efficacy was assessed using the surface and internal moisture indices under airflow shaping (test) and uniform airflow (control) conditions. Hair fluttering (maximum angular displacement) was evaluated before and after drying under warm-cool alternating (60°C-80°C) versus constant hot airflow (80°C).
Results:
SEM revealed temperature-dependent cuticle disruption, with markedly greater surface perturbation at 90°C than at 80°C. Infrared thermography demonstrated pronounced late-stage thermal amplification: at 150 seconds, the surface temperature increased by 295% (from 24.2°C to 72.0°C) at 90°C, compared with 207% (from 24.2°C to 50.7°C) at 80°C. Airflow shaping promoted preferential surface moisture removal (–13.6%) while limiting internal dehydration (–9.4%), whereas the control condition exhibited minimal surface drying (–4.6%) but substantial internal moisture loss (–22.2%). Warm-cool modulation increased hair fluttering by +11.0%, whereas constant hot airflow reduced it (–3.7%).
Conclusion
These findings indicate that spatial and temporal control of heat delivery represents a clinically relevant design strategy beyond the nominal temperature specification in hair-drying devices.

Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research 2026;110(2):76-83
Purpose:
Neoadjuvant treatment (NAT) is now the standard for borderline resectable pancreatic cancer (RPC) and is being considered for RPC. Early recurrence after curative surgery in RPC is often seen as a treatment failure, prompting considerations for NAT. Our goal was to develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based predictive model utilizing preoperatively available factors to forecast early recurrences of resected RPC.
Methods:
This study included 469 patients who underwent surgery for RPC between 2011 and 2019. Clinicopathologic and oncologic data were retrospectively reviewed. Preoperative variables, including laboratory data and imaging findings, were collected. Early recurrence was defined as recurrence occurring within a year after surgery. Deep neural networks were then used to select variables by assessing their importance. A new model predicting early recurrence of RPC was subsequently developed.
Results:
Of the patients evaluated, 199 (42.4%) experienced early recurrence. The predictive model included 14 preoperative variables: CA 19-9, preoperative pancreatitis, serum albumin, platelet count, lymphocyte count, the American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification, tumor size, monocyte count, age, body mass index, CRP, hemoglobin, WBC count, and CEA. The area under the curve for the model was 0.786 in the training set and 0.734 in the test set.
Conclusion
We developed an AI-based model to predict the early recurrence of RPC using preoperative parameters. By identifying patients at risk of early recurrence, optimal individualized treatments such as NAT can be considered. Future prospective studies are crucial to establish clear indications for NAT in RPC.

Recurrent scalp compromise following deep brain stimulation (DBS) implantation remains a challenging reconstructive problem, particularly in patients with chronic infection and repeated revision procedures. We present an acellular dermal matrix (ADM)-assisted salvage strategy using rotational scalp flap coverage with adjunctive calvarial recession for preservation of exposed DBS hardware. After debridement and subperiosteal flap elevation, ADM was applied over the exposed hardware as a biologic reinforcement layer prior to tension-free closure. Adjunctive calvarial recession was performed to reduce hardware prominence. Postoperative computed tomography demonstrated decreased hardware projection, and stable wound healing without recurrent dehiscence or infection was maintained during follow-up. This combined approach may represent an effective salvage option for recurrent DBS scalp compromise while preserving functional neuromodulation hardware.

Purpose:
Non-operative management (NOM) has emerged as a promising organ-preserving strategy for patients with rectal cancer who achieve a clinical complete response (cCR) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT). However, no standardized treatment protocol has been established for watch-and-wait strategies.
Materials and Methods:
This prospective study evaluated oncological outcomes of NOM combined with 4 months of adjuvant capecitabine. Patients with resectable rectal cancer (≤ 8 cm from the anal verge, cT2-4 or N+) underwent CRT (50-54 Gy in 25-27 fractions with capecitabine). Eight weeks post-CRT, a multidisciplinary team assessed cCR. Patients achieving cCR received six cycles of capecitabine (2 weeks on/1 week off) and were actively monitored.
Results:
Among 89 patients receiving CRT (2018-2023), 17 (19.1%) achieved cCR and were included. The median age was 65 years, and 64.7% were male. Eleven (64.7%) completed all six cycles of adjuvant therapy. After a median follow-up of 31.4 months, 11 patients (64.7%) remained disease-free. Local regrowth occurred in six patients (35.3%) with 2- and 4-year rates of 34.5% and 47.6%, respectively. Five underwent radical surgery, and one received transanal excision with systemic chemotherapy. At the time of assessment, 15 patients (88.2%) showed no evidence of disease, while two (11.8%) received palliative chemotherapy. All patients were alive.
Conclusion
NOM with adjuvant capecitabine showed promising oncological outcomes, offering an alternative to passive watch-and-wait approaches. Further refinement through multidisciplinary strategies is warranted.

Purpose:
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in children, adolescents, and young adults is rare and differs from older adults. This study evaluated the outcomes of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in young Korean CML patients during the tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) era.
Materials and Methods:
A retrospective analysis of 35 CML patients aged < 40 years who underwent allogeneic HSCT from 2009 to 2019 was conducted using Korean Blood and Marrow Transplantation Registry data. Patients were grouped by age < 20 years at HSCT (group 1, n=15) and 20-40 years at HSCT (group 2, n=20). Survival outcomes including overall survival (OS), relapse-free survival (RFS), and event-free survival (EFS) were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method.
Results:
The median time between diagnosis and HSCT was 8.9 months. All the patients achieved engraftment but platelet recovery was significantly slower in group 1 (p=0.034). Acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease occurred in 54.3% and 34.3%, respectively. Five-year OS, RFS, and EFS rates of total patients were 66.8%, 50.8%, and 47.6%, with better OS was observed in group 1 by multivariable analysis (p=0.048). Disease status at HSCT was a significant predictor of OS (p=0.028), RFS (p=0.003), and EFS (p=0.004). Disease progression occurred in 13 out of 35 patients (37.1%); treatment-related mortality accounted for 63.6% of deaths (7 out of 11).
Conclusion
When performed at a younger age, allogeneic HSCT result in superior outcome in CML. Achieving remission before HSCT is critical for improved outcomes, highlighting the importance of pretransplant remission via optimal TKI strategies and minimal residual disease monitoring.

Cancer Research and Treatment 2026;58(1):221-231
Purpose:
The aim of this study is to compare the detection ability of quality of life (QoL) changes and responsiveness of the KOrean QUality of life in Stomach cancer patients Study group (KOQUSS)-40 and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ).
Materials and Methods:
A multicenter prospective observational study was conducted to evaluate QoL changes after various gastrectomies between January 2021 and April 2022. Participants were instructed to complete the KOQUSS-40 and EORTC QLQ-C30/STO22 preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. QoL changes over time and QoL responsiveness were assessed for each questionnaire.
Results:
Data from 491 patients who underwent curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer at 22 institutions were analyzed. The summary scores of the KOQUSS-40 and EORTC QLQ-STO22 showed significant differences between the total and proximal gastrectomy groups (p=0.044 and p=0.038, respectively), but no difference was observed for the EORTC QLQ-C30. Dysphagia on the KOQUSS-40 was significantly different between the total and proximal gastrectomy groups (p=0.031); however, dysphagia on the EORTC QLQ-STO22 did not differ. The responsiveness of the KOQUSS-40 was similar to that of the EORTC QLQ in patients who experienced ≥ 10% body weight loss, but approximately 10% less in patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy than the EORTC QLQ.
Conclusion
KOQUSS-40 has several advantages over EORTC QLQ-C30/STO22 when comparing QoL between the total and proximal gastrectomy groups. The findings provide information for researchers investigating the QoL of patients who have undergone curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer.

Clinical Pediatric Hematology-Oncology 2026;33(1):29-33
Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a rare immune-mediated disorder in children that can present as primary or secondary to other diseases. Here, we report an unusual case of steroid-refractory warm AIHA in an 11-year-old girl whose condition was ultimately cured after removal of a benign ovarian tumor. Despite receiving multiple lines of therapy—including corticosteroids, rituximab, cyclosporine, sirolimus, and mycophenolate mofetil—the patient experienced recurrent hemolysis and steroid dependence for nearly four years. Abdominopelvic imaging performed to evaluate fever revealed bilateral ovarian cystic lesions, including a left-sided dermoid cyst. Surgical resection of the tumor led to complete and sustained hematologic remission, with normalization of hemoglobin, bilirubin, and reticulocyte counts, allowing discontinuation of all immunosuppressive agents. No recurrence of hemolysis was observed during 18 months of follow-up. This case highlights the potential for benign ovarian tumors to act as a rare secondary cause of AIHA through paraneoplastic or immune cross-reactive mechanisms. Awareness of such associations is crucial when evaluating pediatric patients with refractory or relapsing AIHA, as identification and removal of an occult tumor may achieve definitive resolution of hemolysis and avoid long-term immunosuppression.

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains a key revascularization strategy for ischemic heart disease; however, nationwide trends in the Republic of Korea have not been thoroughly investigated. Using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, we analyzed adult patients who underwent isolated CABG between 2005 and 2022. We evaluated surgical volume, patient demographics, procedural strategies (off-pump vs. onpump), and outcomes. International comparisons were conducted using national cardiac surgery registry data. A total of 51,923 CABG cases were identified. Annual surgical volume declined until 2013 but gradually increased thereafter, reaching 3,717 cases in 2022. Despite this recovery, Korea’s per capita CABG rate remains among the lowest worldwide. In contrast, more than 60% of procedures were performed off-pump—the highest rate worldwide. Over time, the average patient age and prevalence of diabetes increased, whereas in-hospital mortality showed a modest decline. Compared with other countries, the Republic of Korea demonstrated a uniquely low procedural volume and a strong preference for off-pump CABG. This nationwide analysis highlights Korea’s distinctive CABG practice patterns and provides valuable insights for optimizing future clinical and policy decisions in cardiac surgical care.

Safety and Health at Work 2026;17(1):12-23
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are increasingly recognized as airborne contaminants of concern, yet their distribution across environments remains under-characterized. In particular, con centrations in industrial settings have hardly been studied compared to general environments. This review synthesizes findings from 25 studies reporting airborne PFAS across four categories: outdoor general environments, indoor general environments, outdoor occupational environments, and indoor occupational environments. Reported levels were generally lowest outdoors (0.5—3.0 ng/m3 ), higher in general indoor settings (3.0—15.0 ng/m 3 ), and highest in occupational environments, sometimes exceeding 100 ng/m 3 . Volatile precursors such as fluorotelomer alcohols dominated most environments, while particle-bound ionic PFAS were more common in occupational settings, suggesting distinct exposure pathways. Across studies, airborne PFAS levels were lowest outdoors, higher indoors, and highest in occupational settings. The complexity of PFAS behavior, influenced by chemical species and particle/gas-phase partitioning, underscores challenges in exposure assessment. Despite the relatively low airborne PFAS concentrations, this review confirms that inhalation remains a critical exposure pathway due to the persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity of PFAS. Standardized measurement methods, geographically diverse monitoring, and integration with exposure modeling are urgently needed. Strengthening regulatory frameworks and establishing protective exposure limits will be essential to mitigate long-term health impacts.

Journal of Korean Medical Science 2025;40(15):e46-
Background:
To assess the quality of life (QoL) and treatment satisfaction with intermittently-scanned continuous glucose monitoring (isCGM) in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
Methods:
This prospective observational study included 189 women with GDM who completed the Korean version of the Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life Questionnaire (K-ADDQoL). Among them, 25 women who utilized isCGM between gestational weeks 30 and 34 completed the Korean version of the Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire change version (K-DTSQc) to evaluate their satisfaction with isCGM during pregnancy.
Results:
GDM had a negative impact on the perceived QoL in 89.4% of the women. All 19 domains of the K-ADDQoL were adversely influenced by GDM, with the most significant impact on the freedom to eat (weighted impact score, −6.98 ± 2.49, P < 0.001) and the least impact on the sex life (−0.25 ± 0.80, P = 0.008). Younger women and those treated with insulin perceived themselves as being more affected in their QoL due to GDM. Women perceived to have less effect on their QoL attributed to GDM exhibited higher ΔHbA1c one year after delivery (ΔHbA1c, 0.3 ± 0.4% vs. 0.0 ± 0.4% in less affected vs. more affected women). The utilization of isCGM improved treatment satisfaction (overall satisfaction score, 10.36 ± 9.21, P < 0.001), independent of glycemic control during pregnancy.
Conclusion
Although GDM negatively affects the perceived QoL during pregnancy, attentiveness to GDM management may have a positive impact on long-term glycemic control. Moreover, employing isCGM can enhance treatment satisfaction in women with GDM.
