1.Pilot Study About the Effects of the Soma Experiencing Motion (Soma e-Motion) Program on Interoceptive Awareness and Self-Compassion

Objective:
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the Soma experiencing motion (Soma e-motion) program on interoceptive awareness and self-compassion among novices.
Methods:
A total of 19 adults (clinical group=9, non-clinical group=10) participated in the intervention. Psychological and physical changes after program were qualitatively analyzed using in-depth interviews. The Korean Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (K-MAIA) and the Korean version of the Self-Compassion Scale (K-SCS) were used as quantitative measures.
Results:
The non-clinical group showed statistically significant differences in the K-MAIA scores (z=-2.805, p<0.01) and K-SCS scores (z=-2.191, p<0.05); however, the clinical group showed no significant differences (K-MAIA: z=-0.652, p>0.05; K-SCS: z=-0.178, p>0.05). According to the in-depth interviews, the results of the qualitative analysis were categorized into five dimensions (psychological and emotional, physical, cognitive, behavioral, and aspects participants found challenging and needs improvement).
Conclusion
The Soma e-motion program was feasible for improving interoceptive awareness and self-compassion in the non-clinical group. However, further research is needed to investigate the clinical efficacy of the Soma e-motion program for clinical group.
2.Comparative Analysis of the Psychosocial Symptoms and Experiences of Bereaved Parents and Parents of Children Who Survived the Sewol Ferry Accident After 5 Years: A Qualitative Interview Study

Background:
This study aimed to investigate the psychosocial symptoms and experiences of bereaved parents of victims and parents of survivors of the Sewol Ferry accident five years after the accident.
Methods:
In-depth interviews of 186 bereaved parents of victims or survivors of the Sewol Ferry accident were conducted. We elicited and categorized meaning units relevant to the psychological, cognitive, and physical traits of the participants from these interviews.Differences in responses between bereaved parents and survivors’ parents and between genders were examined using frequency analyses and χ 2 tests.
Results:
Data were organized under seven headings: observed attitude and impression of participants, difficulties due to mental health problems, difficulties due to physical pain, difficulties in relationships, negative changes following the incident, positive changes following the incident, and help needed. Within these headings, 27 themes, 60 sub-themes, and 80 meaning units were elicited.
Conclusion
This study explored the psychiatric, physical, and relational problems reported by bereaved parents and those of survivors as well as major changes in their personal and social lives after the Sewol Ferry accident. Differences in responses according to gender were also identified. The results from this study could inform and facilitate the implementation of intervention measures, such as long-term psychological evaluation, to bereaved parents of victims or survivors of disasters.

Somatics refers to body work and movement study that emphasize internal perception and experience. Recently, a new perspective has emerged that views somatics-based techniques as a kind of mindful movement. Somatic techniques as contemplative movement can improve emotional regulation ability through improvement of body awareness or interoception. Based on this background, the present study attempts to develop a somatics based program suitable for a group of clinical patients suffering from emotional dysregulation. This study plans to collect quantitative and qualitative data in order to clarify how interoception and the related emotional regulation ability change after the program. These findings will help to explore whether the somatics technique has potential as an emotion regulation program in the future. In addition, the results are expected to contribute to finding an alternative treatment modality for patients who have not achieved a sufficient effect with conventional psychotherapy.

5.Association between Sitting Time and Hyperuricemia in Korean Adults: Results from the 2016– 2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Background:
Recent studies have indicated that hyperuricemia is associated with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to examine the association between sitting time and hyperuricemia in Korean adults.
Methods:
This study included 16,535 adults aged ≥19 years who participated in the 2016–2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Hyperuricemia was defined as a serum uric acid level of ≥7.0 mg/dL in men and ≥6.0 mg/dL in women. The odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of hyperuricemia according to sitting time were calculated using a multivariable logistic regression analysis.
Results:
The mean serum uric acid levels were significantly higher in participants with sitting times of ≥5 hours/day than those with sitting times of <5 hours/day in total participants, males, and females. The proportion of hyperuricemia was also significantly higher in participants with sitting times of ≥5 hours/day than those with sitting times of <5 hours/day in the total participants and males. Before and after adjusting for confounding variables, sitting times of ≥5 hours/day were associated with increased odds of hyperuricemia as compared with sitting times of <5 hours/day in total participants.
Conclusion
Our findings suggest that longer sitting time is associated with risk of hyperuricemia, and sitting time is an independent factor for hyperuricemia in Korean adults.
6.Effects of Pre-analytical Variables on Cell-free DNA Extraction for Liquid Biopsy

BACKGROUND: Extraction of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is a key step for determining the quality of cfDNA-related molecular diagnostics. We evaluated the effect of sample containers and sample storage conditions on cfDNA extraction. METHODS: The cfDNA extraction using the MagMAX Cell-Free DNA Isolation Kit from five healthy controls and five lung cancer patients was evaluated according to the type of sample container and storage conditions: K2-EDTA container, <1, 6, 24, and 48 hr storage at 4℃ after immediate plasma separation; and Cell-Free DNA BCT container, <1, 3, 7, and 14 days stored at room temperature. Mutation analysis of EGFR exons 18–21 was performed. To assess the effect of a delay in centrifugation, EDTA whole blood samples from five healthy individuals were stored at 4℃ for 6, 12, and 24 hr before plasma separation. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the amount and nucleic acid size of cfDNA in both controls and patients with cancer when EDTA plasma was stored at 4℃ up to 48 hr. The amount and size of cfDNA in the BCT container were not different up to 7 days; however, the 14-day sample showed an increase in cfDNA concentration due to genomic DNA contamination. EGFR mutations were detected on EDTA containers up to 48 hr and with BCT containers up to 14 days. When EDTA whole blood was stored at 4℃ and plasma separation was delayed, the cfDNA concentration increased from 24 hr. CONCLUSIONS: The cfDNA extraction was affected by the sample containers and storage conditions.

7.Construction and Application of Internal Control for Laboratory-Developed HTLV PCR.

BACKGROUND: For donor samples showing reactive results in a human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV) antibody test along with indeterminate results in Western blot assay, HTLV nucleic acid amplification test using laboratory-developed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed. It is necessary to construct an adequate internal control (IC) to evaluate the accuracy of the results since we did not use an IC in the laboratory-developed PCR. METHODS: As a competitive IC, plasmid DNA containing the primer recognition sequence for amplification of the HTLV pX region was constructed. We determined the adequate concentration of the IC, which was added to the samples to evaluate the accuracy of the test results. RESULTS: When the plasmid DNA was added to the HTLV-positive samples, the amplified product of IC (400 bp) was detected with the HTLV gene (230 bp). The adequate concentration of plasmid DNA added as an IC was 1 pg. CONCLUSION: The construction of plasmid DNA as a competitive IC is an efficient method to evaluate accuracy of the test results. However, the production process for the competitive IC must be further developed. Therefore, it is necessary to compare with the performance of a non-competitive IC.

8.Differentiation between incomplete Kawasaki disease and secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis following Kawasaki disease using N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide.

PURPOSE: Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a hyperinflammatory syndrome with many causes, including Kawasaki disease (KD). The purpose of this study was to identify the laboratory tests needed to easily differentiate KD with HLH from incomplete KD alone. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study on patients diagnosed with incomplete KD and incomplete KD with HLH (HLH-KD) between January 2012 and March 2015. We compared 8 secondary HLH patients who were first diagnosed with incomplete KD with all 247 incomplete KD diagnosed patients during the study period. The complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, platelet count, and serum total protein, albumin, triglyceride, C-reactive protein, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and ferritin levels were compared. Clinical characteristics and echocardiography findings were also compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS: The total duration of fever was longer in the HLH-KD group than in the KD group. White blood cell and platelet counts were higher in the KD group. Alanine aminotransferase, ferritin, and coronary artery diameter were increased in the HLH-KD group compared with those in the KD group. The median of NT-proBNP was significantly higher in the HLH-KD group than in the KD group at 889.0 (interquartile range [IQR], 384.5–1792.0) pg/mL vs. 233.0 (IQR, 107.0–544.0) pg/mL. CONCLUSION: The NT-proBNP level may be helpful in distinguishing incomplete KD from KD with HLH. The NT-proBNP level should be determined in KD patients with prolonged fever, in addition to the white blood cell count, platelet count, and ferritin level, to evaluate secondary HLH.

9.The relationship of examinees' individual characteristics and perceived acceptability of smart device-based testing to test scores on the practice test of the Korea Emergency Medicine Technician Licensing Examination

PURPOSE:
Smart device-based testing (SBT) is being introduced into the Republic of Korea’s high-stakes examination system, starting with the Korean Emergency Medicine Technician Licensing Examination (KEMTLE) in December 2017. In order to minimize the effects of variation in examinees’ environment on test scores, this study aimed to identify any associations of variables related to examinees’ individual characteristics and their perceived acceptability of SBT with their SBT practice test scores.
METHODS:
Of the 569 candidate students who took the KEMTLE on September 12, 2015, 560 responded to a survey questionnaire on the acceptability of SBT after the examination. The questionnaire addressed 8 individual characteristics and contained 2 satisfaction, 9 convenience, and 9 preference items. A comparative analysis according to individual variables was performed. Furthermore, a generalized linear model (GLM) analysis was conducted to identify the effects of individual characteristics and perceived acceptability of SBT on test scores.
RESULTS:
Among those who preferred SBT over paper-and-pencil testing, test scores were higher for male participants (mean± standard deviation [SD], 4.36± 0.72) than for female participants (mean± SD, 4.21± 0.73). According to the GLM, no variables evaluated— including gender and experience with computer-based testing, SBT, or using a tablet PC—showed a statistically significant relationship with the total score, scores on multimedia items, or scores on text items.
CONCLUSION
Individual characteristics and perceived acceptability of SBT did not affect the SBT practice test scores of emergency medicine technician students in Korea. It should be possible to adopt SBT for the KEMTLE without interference from the variables examined in this study.
