1.Correlations between a Flexible Parental Visiting Environment and Parental Stress in Neonatal Intensive Care Units

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between a flexible parental visiting environment and parental stress in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).METHODS: The study participants included 60 parents of premature infants in NICUs. Structured questionnaires and interviews, as well as observations by researchers using a caregiving behavior checklist, were used to measure the flexibility of the parental visiting environment and parents' stress levels. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected concurrently and were initially analyzed as separate data sets. Data collection extended from March 11, 2018 to June 30. 2018 and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson correlation coefficients.RESULTS: There was a negative correlation (r=−.30, p=.021) between parental stress and the total number of visits in 7 days. We also found that the average duration of each visit and the number of caregiving behaviors performed by parents were positively correlated (r=.73, p<.001).CONCLUSION: When designing a flexible visiting environment for parents, parents should be encouraged to visit their babies. By doing so, stress can be reduced both for babies and for parents. Therefore, it is suggested that the related polices and regulations in South Korea should be changed to provide more a flexible visiting environment to promote better parent-child attachment and family adjustment.

2.Factors Affecting Clinical Practicum Stress of Nursing Students: Using the Lazarus and Folkman's Stress-Coping Model

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to test a path model for the factors related to undergraduate nursing students' clinical practicum stress, based on Lazarus and Folkman's stress-coping model. METHODS: This study utilized a path analysis design. A total of 235 undergraduate nursing students participated in this study. The variables in the hypothetical path model consisted of clinical practicum, emotional intelligence, self-efficacy, Nun-chi, and nursing professionalism. We tested the fit of the hypothetical path model using SPSS/WIN 23.0 and AMOS 22.0. RESULTS: The final model fit demonstrated a satisfactory statistical acceptance level: goodness-of-fit-index=.98, adjusted goodness-of-fit-index=.91, comparative fit index=.98, normed fit index=.95, Tucker-Lewis index=.92, and root mean square error of approximation=.06. Self-efficacy (β=−.22, p=.003) and Nun-chi behavior (β=−.17, p=.024) were reported as significant factors affecting clinical practicum stress, explaining 10.2% of the variance. Nursing professionalism (β=.20, p=.006) and self-efficacy (β=.45, p<.001) had direct effects on emotional intelligence, explaining 45.9% of the variance. Self-efficacy had indirect effects on Nun-chi understanding (β=.20, p<.001) and Nun-chi behavior (β=.09, p=.005) through emotional intelligence. Nursing professionalism had indirect effects on Nun-chi understanding (β=.09, p=.005) and Nun-chi behavior (β=.09, p=.005) through emotional intelligence. The variables for self-efficacy and nursing professionalism explained 29.1% of the Nun-chi understanding and 18.2% of the Nun-chi behavior, respectively. CONCLUSION: In undergraduate nursing education, it is important to identify and manage factors that affect clinical practicum stress. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of Nun-chi, self-efficacy, emotional intelligence, and nursing professionalism in the development of an educational strategy for undergraduate nursing students.

3.Factors associated with Interpersonal Relationship Ability of Undergraduates: A Mediation Analysis of Smartphone Addiction Tendency

PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to evaluate a hypothetical model explaining undergraduates' interpersonal relationship ability associated with the stress of life, self-esteem, and their communication ability and to identify the mediating effect of a smartphone addiction tendency on the identified associations. METHODS: Data were collected from 201 undergraduates using a structured questionnaire from August to September 2017. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and structural equation modeling with SPSS AMOS 22.0. RESULTS: The participants' interpersonal relationship ability was 65.9%, explained by the stress of life, self-esteem, communication ability, and smartphone addiction tendency. The factors of undergraduates' interpersonal relationship ability were self-esteem (β=.10, p<.01) and communication ability (β=.14, p<.001). Stress of life (β=.15, p<.01) directly affected the participants' smartphone addiction tendency, which was not associated with interpersonal relationship ability. CONCLUSION: Based on our study findings, self-esteem and communication ability should be considered for developing nursing interventions to improve interpersonal relationship ability. However, a smartphone addiction tendency may be managed for undergraduates who experience excessive stress of life rather than interpersonal relationship ability. Thus, a tailored approach targeting specific needs or competence should be developed based on our data-based framework.

4.Effects of the Integrated Stress Management Program on Stress and Depression in Psychiatric Inpatients

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the effects on stress and depression by developing and implementing an integrated stress management program for inpatients in the psychiatric closed ward. METHODS: The study was a one-group pretest-posttest design. A total of 36 patients in the closed ward participated in this study. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires to measure hospital stress and depression. Data were analyzed by using t-tests and one-way ANOVA with SPSS/WIN 21.0. RESULTS: Integrated stress management program was designed based on Lazarus and Folkman stress-appraisal-coping model. Total of eight 1-hour sessions were delivered for four weeks in the group. There were significant differences in the inpatient stress scores before and after the intervention. However, the integrated stress management program showed some reduction in depression but did not show signifiant differences statistically. CONCLUSION: Our study findings confirm that the use of the integrated stress management program can reduce stress of the patients, that enable them to stabilize their minds at hospitalization. However, further study is needed to confirm the effects on depression. Thus, it would be beneficial to provide psychiatric nursing intervention tailored to psychiatric patients' symptoms, especially for reducing inpatient stress.

5.Factors Influencing Distress in Premenopausal Patients with Breast Cancer Undergoing Endocrine Therapy

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships among menopausal symptoms, functional status, and distress and to identify factors influencing distress in premenopausal breast cancer patients who had been on endocrine therapy. METHODS: A descriptive correlational study was conducted. Data were collected using questionnaires from 140 patients with breast cancer undergoing endocrine therapy at a general hospital. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Tukey HSD test, Pearson's correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. RESULTS: The mean scores for menopausal symptom, functional status, and distress were 19.65±7.86, 2.67±0.33 and 3.69±2.19, respectively. The menopausal symptoms and distress were positively correlated (r=.76, p<.001). The menopausal symptoms and functional status (r=−.43, p<.001) and functional status and distress (r=−.31, p<.001) were negatively correlated. The most influential factor for distress was menopausal symptoms (β=.79, p<.001). CONCLUSION: Based on the findings of this study, developing nursing intervention programs focusing on decreasing menopausal symptoms and distress are recommended.

6.Factors Influencing Stress in Spouses of Hospitalized Women Diagnosed with Preterm Labor

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to identify to identify the nursing needs and stress levels among spouses of women hospitalized with preterm labor, and to determine factors influencing spousal stress.METHODS: Data were collected from 95 spouses of hospitalized pregnant women due to preterm labor at a hospital in Gyeonggi province from June to December of 2016. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression.RESULTS: The mean score of spouses' nursing needs was 3.06±0.42 and stress was 1.85±0.44 out of 4.00. The highest score of nursing needs was 3.37±0.51 in assurance and the highest score for stress was 2.26±0.72 for patient's illness and prognosis. There was a significant positive correlation between stress in spouse and nursing needs (p=.004). Stress was explained by nursing needs (β=.28) and hospitalization days (β=.21).CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that appropriate nursing interventions are required to address the nursing needs at the beginning of hospitalization and to reduce the stress among spouses of hospitalized pregnant women diagnosed with preterm labor.

7.A Study on the Stress and Adjustment to College Life among Nursing Students.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate the correlation between stress and adjustment to college life among nursing students. METHODS: The sample consisted of 183 university students in C & S cities. Self-report questionnaires were used to measure the variables. In data analysis, SPSSWIN 23.0 program was utilized for descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and regression analysis. RESULTS: The mean scores of stress and adjustment to college life were 2.55 and 3.24. Stress was significantly different according to grade (F=7.30, p < .001), economic state (F=14.39, p < .001), perceived health state (F=6.66, p < .001). In regression analysis, stress for college life, perceived health state, and college life satisfaction were significant predictors of adjustment to college life explaining 68%. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that perceived health state was a significant factor on adjustment to college life among nursing students. Therefore, the strategies of nursing intervention which improve perceived health state must be developed for college students.

8.The Mediating Effects of Social Support and a Grateful Disposition on the Relationship between Life Stress and Anger in Korean Nursing Students.

PURPOSE: Anger management is a very important issue for nursing education. However, there is a lack of research identifying related factors. This study examined the mediating effects of social support and a grateful disposition on the relationship between life stress and anger in nursing students. METHODS: The participants were 172 nursing students recruited from two universities in cities in South Korea. Baron and Kenny's regression method and the Sobel test were used to analyze the mediating effects of social support and a grateful disposition on the association between life stress and anger. RESULTS: There were significant correlations between life stress, social support, a grateful disposition, and anger. In addition, social support and a grateful disposition exerted full mediating effects on the relationship between life stress and anger. CONCLUSION: Based on this study's results, enhancing social support and grateful disposition could help nursing students who experience anger resulting from life stress to manage their anger effectively. This finding suggests that, as specific strategies for anger management, nursing educators should encourage nursing students to use sources of social support and to engage in various gratitude activities.

9.Clinical Practice Stress and Burnout in Nursing Students: The Mediating Effect of Empathy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper was to examine the relationships between clinical practice stress and burnout, and the mediating role of empathy in nursing students. METHODS: A cross-sectional research design was employed. One hundred seventeen nursing students completed questionnaires on clinical practice stress, empathy (perspective-taking, fantasy, empathic concern and personal distress) and burnout in December 2017. IBM SPSS Statistics 23 was used and descriptive statistics, frequency, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression were conducted. Baron & Kenny method and Sobel test were adopted for analysis of the mediation effect (personal distress of empathy). RESULTS: The mean scores of clinical practice stress and burnout were 3.45 and 43.09, and perspective-taking, fantasy, empathic concern and personal distress of empathy were 2.67, 2.42, 2.64 and 2.19, respectively. The highest relationship between clinical practice stress and empathy was personal distress of empathy (r=.32, p < .001). Burnout was positively associated with clinical practice stress and personal distress of empathy (r=.22, p=.015; r=.51, p < .001). Personal distress of empathy demonstrated a complete mediating effect on the relationship between clinical practice stress and burnout (Z=3.22, p=.001). CONCLUSION: These results showed that decreasing personal distress of empathy is important for nursing students, and may help in reducing clinical practice stress and burnout.

10.Effects of Maternal Empowerment Program on Stress, Anxiety, Depression and Parenting Confidence in Mothers of Preterm Infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an empowerment program on maternal stress, anxiety, depression and parenting confidence. METHODS: A total of 44 mothers of preterm infants were assigned into an experimental or a control group (n=22 each). The experimental group received the usual nursing care and 7 sessions of an empowerment program. The control group only received the usual care. The program was implemented from June to December, 2016 in the neonatal intensive care unit of K university-affiliated hospital in Daegu, Korea. The outcome variables measured were parental stress (PSS: NICU), anxiety (STAI), depression (CES-D) and parenting confidence. Data were analyzed using t-test or repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: Scores for both parental stress (t=3.07 p=.004) and depression (F=3.76, p=.26) were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group. However, there were no significant differences in anxiety between the groups (F=0.79, p=.505). Parenting confidence scores (F=9.05, p=.001) were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. CONCLUSION: A maternal empowerment program can be an effective means of reducing parental stress and depression as well as enhancing parenting confidence, for mothers of preterm infants.
