1.Factors associated with weight loss behaviors among Korean female adolescents: a bio-psycho-social model approach

Purpose:
Weight loss behaviors are common among Korean female adolescents and are often influenced by distorted body image and sociocultural pressures, leading some to unhealthy practices. This study examined biological, psychological, and social factors associated with weight loss behaviors using Engel’s biopsychosocial model.
Methods:
This secondary analysis utilized data from the 19th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2023), focusing on 21,632 female middle and high school students. Logistic regression was conducted to analyze associations between weight loss behaviors and biopsychosocial variables such as body mass index (BMI), grade level, stress, anxiety, body image distortion, smoking, and nutrition education experience.
Results:
Among female adolescents, 46.5% reported having attempted weight loss. In logistic regression analysis, biological factors (grade level and BMI percentile), psychological factors (perceived stress, distorted body image, generalized anxiety disorder risk, and smoking), and social factors (nutrition education) were significantly associated with weight loss behaviors. Key predictors included being in middle school (odds ratio [OR], 1.22), higher BMI, elevated stress, distorted body image (OR, 1.90), generalized anxiety, smoking (OR, 1.53), and lack of nutrition education (OR, 1.10). Psychological factors, especially body image distortion and emotional distress, emerged as major contributors to weight loss behaviors.
Conclusion
Weight loss behaviors among Korean female adolescents are influenced by complex biopsychosocial factors beyond physical health concerns. Nursing interventions should incorporate emotional regulation, body image education, and school-based health literacy programs. Early identification through multidimensional assessment is crucial for effective prevention.

Methods:
A total of 899 patients with intermediate coronary lesions between 50% and 70% diameter-stenosis were randomized to the conservative group (n=449) or the aggressive group (n=450). For intermediate lesions, PCI was performed in the aggressive group, but was deferred in the conservative group. The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiac events (MACE, a composite of all-cause death, myocardial infarction [MI], or ischemia-driven any revascularization) at 3 years.
Results:
The number of treated lesions per patient was 0.8±0.9 in the conservative group and 1.7±0.9 in the aggressive group (p=0.001). At 3 years, the conservative group had a significantly higher incidence of MACE than the aggressive group (13.8% vs. 9.3%; hazard ratio [HR], 1.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.00–2.21; p=0.049), mainly driven by revascularization of target intermediate lesion (6.5% vs. 1.1%; HR, 5.69; 95% CI, 2.20–14.73;p<0.001). Between 1 and 3 years after the index procedure, compared to the aggressive group, the conservative group had significantly higher incidence of cardiac death or MI (3.2% vs.0.7%; HR, 4.34; 95% CI, 1.24–15.22; p=0.022) and ischemia-driven any revascularization.
Conclusions
For intermediate lesions, medical therapy alone, guided only by angiography, was associated with a higher risk of MACE at 3 years compared with performing PCI, mainly due to increased revascularization.

6.Inhibitory Effects of Ethanol Extracts of Ginkgo biloba Leaves on Physiological Activities of Streptococcus mutans in Different Carbohydrate Conditions

Background:
Dental caries is closely associated with physiological activities of Streptococcus mutans, including growth, acid production, calcium ion (Ca2+ ) release, and biofilm formation. Although the antimicrobial properties of ethanol extracts of Ginkgo biloba leaves (GLE) against various cariogenic and periodontal pathogens have been reported, their effects on physiological responses of S. mutans under different carbohydrate environments remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the influence of GLE on the physiological activities of S. mutans in brain heart infusion broth, and in media supplemented with 1% sucrose or 1% xylitol. Based on these findings, we aimed to evaluate the potential of GLE as a natural functional material for inhibiting S. mutans–associated virulence and preventing dental caries.
Methods:
To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of GLE against S. mutans under various media conditions, a disk diffusion test was performed. Effects of GLE on physiological activities of S. mutans were assessed by measuring bacterial growth and conducting assay for biofilm formation, Ca2+ release, acidogenicity, and buffering capacity.
Results:
GLE exhibited significant, dose-dependent antimicrobial activity against S. mutans, particularly in sucrose-containing media. Increasing GLE concentrations significantly inhibited bacterial growth, biofilm formation, and Ca2+ release. Notably, GLE at concentrations of ≥5 mg/ml effectively suppressed multiple physiological activities of S. mutans. In addition, GLE reduced bacterial acid production regardless of concentration and enhanced the buffering capacity of the culture media.
Conclusion
GLE has the potential to serve as a safe and effective natural functional material with physiological activity inhibitionand anticariogenic potential GLE inhibits physiological activities of S. mutans, including biofilm formation and Ca2+ release, particularly in sucrose-containing media, and effectively neutralizes S. mutans-induced the acidic conditions by, thereby contributing to its anticariogenic effects.
7.A Phase II Study to Evaluate the Efficacy of Bortezomib in Combination with Thalidomide in Treatment-Naïve Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia Patients

Purpose:
Despite the recent success of Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitors for the treatment of Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia (WM), their indefinite treatment duration ultimately tantamount to substantial financial and emotional burden. On the other hand, fixed duration of proteasome inhibitors (PI) have shown rapid and reasonable response in WM treatment. Despite the well-known synergism between PI and immunomodulatory drugs (IMiD), there is no trials evaluating such combination in WM.
Materials and Methods:
Based on above, we designed this phase II study to investigate the efficacy and safety of 6 cycles of 28-day bortezomib-thalidomide-dexamethasone (VTD) regimen for treatment-naïve WM.
Results:
A total of 15 patients were enrolled: major response rate was 64.3%, and overall response rate was 78.6%. During the median follow-up of 41 months, median progression-free survival (PFS) was 13 months and overall survival 40 months. For responders, median duration of response was 13 months and median PFS 19 months. The most common adverse event (AE) of any grade was constipation (57.1%). The most common grade ≥ 3 AE was anemia (21.4%).
Conclusion
All in all, we hereby provide proof-of-concept that PI + IMiD may be an attractive backbone for fixed duration treatment. It should be noted that granting the same level of access to newer drugs globally is virtually impossible. Thus efforts to develop regimens using readily available drugs to yield similar or adequate treatment outcomes should not be disregarded. In this sense, we believe our study holds its place for its novelty and eloquently addresses achieving the daunting societal quest of health equity.
8.Comparative Efficacy of Rosuvastatin Monotherapy and Rosuvastatin/Ezetimibe Combination Therapy on Insulin Sensitivity and Vascular Inflammatory Response in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Background:
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) induces endothelial dysfunction and inflammation, which are the main factors for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The present study aimed to compare the effects of rosuvastatin monotherapy and rosuvastatin/ezetimibe combination therapy on lipid profile, insulin sensitivity, and vascular inflammatory response in patients with T2DM.
Methods:
A total of 101 patients with T2DM and dyslipidemia were randomized to either rosuvastatin monotherapy (5 mg/day, n=47) or rosuvastatin/ezetimibe combination therapy (5 mg/10 mg/day, n=45) and treated for 12 weeks. Serum lipids, glucose, insulin, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), and peroxiredoxin 4 (PRDX4) levels were determined before and after 12 weeks of treatment.
Results:
The reduction in low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) by more than 50% from baseline after treatment was more in the combination therapy group. The serum sICAM-1 levels increased significantly in both groups, but there was no difference between the two groups. The significant changes in homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and PRDX4 were confirmed only in the subgroup in which LDL-C was reduced by 50% or more in the combination therapy group. However, after adjusting for diabetes mellitus duration and hypertension, the changes in HOMA-IR and PRDX4 were not significant between the two groups.
Conclusion
Although rosuvastatin/ezetimibe combination therapy had a greater LDL-C reduction effect than rosuvastatin monotherapy, it had no additional effects on insulin sensitivity and vascular inflammatory response. Further studies are needed on the effect of long-term treatment with ezetimibe on insulin sensitivity and vascular inflammatory response.
9.Work Characteristics and Needlestick-Injury Status of Dental Hygienists

Background:
Dental hygienists have a significant risk of infection due to occupational injuries caused by needles and sharpinstruments. This study aimed to evaluate the current status of needle and “sharp-instrument injuries” among dental hygienists and to propose improved preventive guidelines.
Methods:
A total of 251 dental hygienists completed an online survey between August 1, 2023 and September 2, 2023. Data from245 respondents were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 20, using independent t-tests and one-way analysis of variance to assess the frequency of injuries and their correlation with job characteristics.
Results:
Among the 251 dental hygienists, 77.6% had experienced needle or sharp-instrument injuries, with an average of 4.97incidents per person. Infection prevention education significantly reduced the number of injuries, and participants with education exhibited better infection control practices than those without. Most injuries occurred during “instrument cleaning or maintenance” and “anesthesia preparation or disposal,” with “scalers, probes, and curettes” being the main culprits. Hands were the most frequently injured body parts.
Conclusion
Preventive measures, continuous education, and improved guidelines are required to create a safer dental workingenvironment.
10.Treatment Outcomes of HCV Infection in People Living with HIV: A Case Series from a Single Center in Korea

Background:
Limited information is available on the clinical course and treatment outcomes of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) coinfection in Korea.
Materials and Methods:
A retrospective case series was conducted of patients with HIV-HCV coinfection who received interferon (IFN)-based or direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment for HCV at a tertiary care hospital between 2000 and 2023. Early virological response (EVR) was defined as a 2-log reduction in HCV RNA levels or undetectable HCV RNA levels at treatment week 12. A sustained virologic response (SVR) was defined as undetectable HCV RNA at 12 weeks after treatment completion.
Results:
Of the 33 patients with HIV-HCV coinfection, 19 received anti-HCV treatment, of whom 12 received IFNbased treatment and 10 received DAA treatment. The median age at the time of anti-HCV treatment was 49 years (interquartile range, 42–57 years) and 15 patients (79%) were male. Of the 12 patients who received IFN-based antiHCV treatment, 10 showed EVR and 8 achieved SVR. However, 2 patients who achieved SVR experienced recurrence of HCV infection during follow-up; therefore, the overall success rate of IFN-based treatment was 50% (6/12). All 10 patients (including 3 in whom IFN-based treatment failed) who received DAA treatment (5 with previous anti-HCV treatment and 5 treatment-naïve), achieved SVR and did not experience recurrence of HCV infection during followup; therefore, the overall success rate of DAA treatment was 100%.
Conclusion
In Korean patients with HIV-HCV coinfection, treatment outcomes were better with DAA treatment than with IFN-based treatment.
