1.Sports-Related Dental Injuries in the Pediatric Patient: A Retrospective Study

This retrospective study aims to analyze the incidence and characteristics of sportsrelated dental injuries in pediatric patients, providing foundational data for the prevention and management of such injuries. Medical records of 2,382 patients aged 3 – 18 who visited Chosun University Dental Hospital between January 2018 and January 2024 were reviewed. Of these, 308 patients who experienced sportsrelated dental trauma were analyzed. Data collected included patient demographics, type of sport, cause of injury, time and location of the trauma, and type of injury. Sports-related dental injuries accounted for 12.9% of all trauma cases in the study population. Males (74.4%) were more commonly affected than females. The most common cause of injury was cycling (21.0%), followed by contact group sports (16.2%) and kickboard (15.5%). Tooth injuries, particularly affecting the maxillary anterior teeth, were the most prevalent type of trauma (63.6%). The presence of a supervisor significantly reduced the time to initial management, indicating the importance of prompt response to dental injuries. Sports-related dental trauma represents a significant public health concern among pediatric and adolescent populations. Increased supervision during sports activities and preventive measures, including the use of protective gear like mouthguards, are essential to reducing the incidence and severity of injuries.

4.Sex Disparity in Cancer and Non-cancer Mortality among Korean Cancer Survivors

This study assessed sex disparities in the causes of death (CODs), both related to cancer and non-cancer, in a nationwide database of cancer survivors in South Korea. Our database included cancer cases diagnosed in Korea between 2009 and 2016, and their CODs up to 2021. Deaths were classified into three categories: index-cancer, non-index-cancer, and non-cancer causes.Male-to-female age-standardized mortality ratios (M/F SMRs) were computed by dividing the male-specific mortality rate by the corresponding female-specific rate. Out of a total of 279,104 (49.0%) recorded deaths in male survivors and 141,674 (27.9%) deaths in female survivors, the M/F SMRs showed an elevated mortality risk in males, both for cancer-related causes (1.46, 95% CI 1.45-1.47) and non-cancer CODs (1.75, 95% CI 1.74-1.77). Among non-cancer CODs, the most significant sex disparity in mortality risk was evident in deaths attributed to chronic lower respiratory diseases (CLRDs), with an SMR of 4.51 (95% CI 4.30-4.73), followed by mortalities due to intentional self-harm (suicide) (2.95, 95% CI 2.85-3.05) and transportation accidents (SMR 2.86, 95% CI 2.67-3.04). Subgroup analysis focusing on survivors of common cancer sites indicated a relatively consistent pattern in index cancer deaths, but the M/F SMRs for non-index cancer and non-cancer deaths demonstrated variability across different cancer sites. Our study underscores an overall elevated mortality risk in male cancer survivors compared to female counterparts. Although deaths stemming from primary cancer remain a substantial concern for both sexes, disparities in non-cancer deaths warrant considerable attention, particularly in relation to CLRD and intentional self-harm (suicide) among male survivors.

Survey data were linked to the NHIS and KCCR databases. Eleven diseases were included for validation. We evaluated the following indicators: sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, accuracy, the area under the curve, and the kappa coefficient.
RESULTS:
The mean±standard deviation age was 62.1±18.7 years, and 42.6% of the participants were aged ≥70 years. Hypertension and cataracts showed the highest prevalence rates (33.8 and 28.8%, respectively). Hypertension, diabetes, and cancer demonstrated high sensitivity (>0.8) and specificity (>0.9), whereas diabetes, cancer, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, and asthma exhibited high accuracy (>0.9). In contrast, arthritis, allergic rhinitis, and asthma showed low sensitivity (<0.4) and kappa values (<0.3). In the participants aged ≥70 years, the kappa value was ≥0.4 for all diseases except arthritis, allergic rhinitis, and asthma.
CONCLUSIONS
The results from this initial analysis showed relatively high agreement between the survey and NHIS/KCCR databases, especially for hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. Our findings suggest that the information on morbidities collected through the questionnaires in this cohort was valid for both younger and older individuals.

9.The Effectiveness of Virtual Reality Intervention for COVID-19-Related Psychological Distress: A Systematic Review

Objective:
The prolonged coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is likely to cause psychological distress in people. This systematic review aimed to identify the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR)-based psychological intervention among individuals with psychological distress during the COVID-19 crisis. PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, and PsycINFO databases were searched for articles published until July 2022.
Methods:
The available citations were deduplicated and screened by two authors using the title and abstract information. Eligibility criteria were constructed according to the PICOT guidelines. Empirical studies of all designs and comparator groups were included if they appraised the impact of an immersive VR intervention on any standardized measure indicative of psychological distress (stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic symptoms) or improvements in quality of life in participants, including COVID-19 patients, medical staff working with COVID-19 patients, and people who had experienced strict social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Results:
The results were discussed using a narrative synthesis because of the heterogeneity between studies. Seven of the studies met the inclusion criteria. There were two randomized controlled trials and five uncontrolled studies on VR interventions.
Conclusion
All studies reported significant improvement in a wide range of psychological distress during COVID-19, ranging from stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic symptoms to quality of life, supporting the efficacy of VR-based psychological intervention. Our results suggest that VR intervention has potential to ameliorate COVID-19-related psychological distress with efficacy and safety.
10.Drug-Eluting Bead Transarterial Chemoembolization Versus Radiofrequency Ablation as an Initial Treatment of Single Small (≤ 3 cm) Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Background:
In this study, we aimed to compare the long-term therapeutic outcomes of drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) with those of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the initial treatment of a single small (≤ 3 cm) hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Methods:
From January 2010 to December 2021, 259 consecutive patients who underwent DEB-TACE (67 patients) or RFA (192 patients) as a first-line treatment for a single small HCC were enrolled in this retrospective study. The therapeutic outcomes, including cumulative intrahepatic local tumor progression (LTP), progression-free survival (PFS), and longterm overall survival (OS) rates, were compared between the two groups before and after propensity score (PS) matching. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were used to evaluate the prognostic factors and differences in OS and PFS between the two groups for all 92 patients after PS matching.
Results:
After PS matching, the 1-, 2-, 3-, and 5-year LTP rates were lower in the RFA group than those in the DEB-TACE group (P < 0.001), and the 1-, 2-, 3-, and 5-year PFS rates in the RFA group were higher than those in the DEB-TACE group (P = 0.007). However, the 1-, 2-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates were not significantly different between the RFA and DEB-TACE groups (P = 0.584).Moreover, the OS was not significantly different between the RFA and DEB-TACE groups in the univariate and multivariate analyses, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.81. The PFS was significantly higher in the RFA group than that in the DEB-TACE group in the univariate analyses, with a HR of 0.44 (P = 0.009). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that albumin (P = 0.019) was an independent prognostic factor for OS. Additionally, the major complication rates were not significantly different between the DEB-TACE and RFA groups (P = 1.000).
Conclusion
The LTP and PFS rates of RFA were superior to those of DEB-TACE in the initial treatment of single small HCC after PS matching. However, the OS rates were not significantly different between RFA and DEB-TACE. Therefore, DEB-TACE may be considered an efficient substitute for RFA in some patients with a single small HCC who are ineligible for RFA.
