Embryology is a critical subdiscipline in medical education, focusing on human body organ development and providing a foundation for understanding developmental anatomy. However, traditional teaching methods using static
2D graphics in textbooks may hinder students’ comprehension of the complex 3D embryonic growth processes.
To address this, multimedia approaches, such as animations, videos, and interactive tools, have been explored for
effective embryology education. This scoping review identifies five key elements of successful multimedia teaching
in embryology: multimodal integrated instructional content, cognitive load-reduction strategies, cognitive engagement and physical interactivity, learner-controlled multimedia instruction, and development of tacit knowledge.
These strategies promote active learning, enhance students’ understanding, and foster critical thinking skills. Future
research should focus on evaluating the impact of multimedia approaches on students’ engagement, attitudes, and
competency development. Embracing multimedia in embryology education can improve medical students’ clinical
understanding and support effective medical practice.

The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has fundamentally reshaped anatomy education, offering invaluable insights to guide the future of anatomy pedagogy. As we transition into a post-pandemic era, it is crucial to integrate the lessons learned to create a more resilient, flexible, and effective educational environment. This paper examines the transformative strategies implemented at Universiti Sains Malaysia during the pandemic, focusing on the empowerment of blended learning, technology-enhanced tools, student-centered learning practical sessions, and enhancement of formative assessment. These strategies include integrating digital learning resources, such as the Virtual Anatomy Museum and online histology quizzes, with in-person instruction, fostering a supportive and interactive learning environment. Additionally, practical sessions were redesigned to emphasize collaborative learning, peer teaching, and developing critical thinking and communication skills. Formative assessments were integrated to provide continuous feedback and support ongoing learning. This comprehensive approach not only enhanced students’ understanding of anatomical concepts but also improved their emotional well-being and overall learning experience. The lessons learned from the pandemic have paved the way for a more innovative and adaptive anatomy education that is well-prepared for future challenges.

6.Evaluating Online Learning Environment for Medical Students Using Digi-MEE Instrument: A Sequential Mixed-Method Study

In light of the increasing use of online learning platforms in medical education, there is a critical need to assess the current state of online learning environments. Despite the global emphasis on digital education, limited studies have systematically explored how medical students perceive the effectiveness and quality of these environments, particularly in Pakistan. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating medical students’ experiences with their institution’s online learning environments and identifying key strengths and challenges that impact learning outcomes.
A mixed-method, sequential exploratory design was used, starting with a quantitative assessment followed by qualitative inquiry. Data from 253 medical students were collected via a survey, and 30 focus group interviews were conducted to provide deeper insights into the challenges students face in navigating the online learning environment. The findings revealed critical areas in need of improvement, including digital infrastructure, student engagement, and the accessibility of online resources. Qualitative data highlighted the need for more interactive and student-centred approaches to online education.
By focusing on the status of online learning in medical education, this research provides valuable insights for educators and policymakers aiming to enhance the quality of digital learning environments. The study contributes to ongoing efforts to develop more effective, engaging, and responsive online learning strategies for medical students in Pakistan.

7.Periosteum: Functional Anatomy and Clinical Application

Periosteum is a connective tissue that envelopes the outer surface of bones and is tightly bound to the underlying
bone by Sharpey’s fibers. It is composed of two layers, the outer fibrous layer and the inner cambium layer. The periosteum is densely vascularised and contains an osteoprogenitor niche that serves as a repository for bone-forming
cells, which makes it an essential bone-regenerating tissue and has immensely contributed to fracture healing. Due
to the high vascularity of inner cambium layer of the periosteum, periosteal transplantation has been widely used in
the management of bone defects and fracture by orthopedic surgeons. Nevertheless, the use of periosteal graft in the
management of bone defect is limited due to its contracted nature after being harvested. This review summarizes the
current state of knowledge about the structure of periosteum, and how periosteal transplantation have been used in
clinical practices, with special reference on its expansion.

The evolution of anatomy education yields a variety of instructional strategies to enhance students’ comprehension
of gross anatomy. Apart from these multi-modality approaches, various studies suggest that anatomy instruction
is more effective when it is taught with radiological integration during the early phase of the medical curriculum.
Studies have shown that the introduction of basic radiological knowledge in anatomy learning enhances visuospatial
skills, which are important for safe clinical practice. Nevertheless, considerable variation in the radiological anatomy
teaching exists in terms of delivery methods, radiological materials, and teaching time. One way to address these
limitations is by using integrated radiology anatomy e-learning platforms. Recent advancements in technology have
given rise to immense attention to e-learning platforms, which have been considered to be an effective modality in
optimising the student learning process. Hence, this article explores the potential use of e-learning tools, namely
integrated with radiological imaging, in teaching gross anatomy.

Knowledge on surface anatomy enables medical students and graduates to locate anatomical structures exteriorly,
improve their clinical and procedural skills and interpret ultrasonographic and radiographic images. Hence, a standard surface anatomy knowledge is essential for attainment of clinical skill competency. Nevertheless, there is lack
of attention given on surface anatomy in the medical curriculum as it is usually delivered didactically or during selfstudy by the students. Owing to limitations in cadaveric dissection in many institutions, lecture-based instruction,
e-learning materials, living anatomy models, radiological imaging and anatomy software are used in teaching surface
anatomy; however, none of these methods proved to be effective over the others. Furthermore, some of these teaching resources lack clinical relevancy, possibly impeding students’ appreciation on learning surface anatomy. Hence,
integrating clinical input during surface anatomy teaching by involving patients in an actual clinical environment is
pertinent. This article demonstrates the benefits and challenges of teaching surface anatomy in the clinical setting to
medical students and highlights the need to design an evidence-based framework of work-based surface anatomy
learning.
10.ANTIOXIDATIVE PROPOLIS FROM HETEROTRIGONA ITAMA AMELIORATES THE EARLY MACROVASCULAR CHANGES IN DIABETIC RATS

Background:
Oxidative damage culminates in diabetic macrovascular complication. Ethanolic extract propolis of Heterotrigona itama exhibits antioxidative, antidiabetic and cardioprotective properties. However, vasoprotective activity has yet to be reported. This research was designed to investigate the effects of the ethanolic extract of propolis on histology and oxidative stress parameters in the aorta of diabetic rats.
Methods:
Raw propolis from Kelantan bee farm was ground, dissolved and distilled with ethanol into crude extract. Adult male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into four groups, n=8/group: normoglycemia (NG), untreated diabetes (DM), metformin-treated diabetes (DM+M, 300 mg/kg/day) and propolis-treated diabetes (DM+P, 300 mg/kg/day). A single injection of intraperitoneal streptozotocin (60 mg/kg) was used to induce diabetes mellitus, followed by a four-week treatment, via oral gavage, administered immediately after successful diabetes-induction with evidence of hyperglycaemia. Both NG and DM groups were given one millilitre of the vehicle. Rats were sacrificed at the end of the experiment; blood was collected for determination of serum lipid profile; the aorta was fixed and processed for histomorphology and histomorphometry evaluation; aortic tissue homogenate assay for oxidant/antioxidant activities. Differences in the parameters between groups were analysed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post-hoc adjustment.
Reults:
Propolis treatment elevated the high-density lipoprotein level and suppressed protein oxidation in diabetic rats. Furthermore, propolis halted the thickening of tunica intima and aberrant proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells in tunica media.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this proof-of-concept study indicated the potential of propolis as a vasoprotective agent against the early pathogenesis of diabetic macroangiopathy through anti-oxidative and anti- hyperglycaemic activities.
