OBJECTIVES:
This study aimed to investigate the correlation between clinical symptoms and unilateral chewing habits in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) accompanied by tinnitus.
METHODS:
A total of 285 patients diagnosed with TMD at the Department of Stomatology of the First Medical Center of Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital between December 2020 and May 2024 were included and divided into two groups: tinnitus group and non-tinnitus group. Analysis was conducted on the proportion of patients with unilateral chewing habits in both groups, the correlation between the side of tinnitus and the side of unilateral chewing, and the correlation of tinnitus with TMD clinical symptoms (joint clicking, joint pain, and limited mouth opening) and unilateral chewing habits. The correlation of the type of disc displacement with unilateral chewing and tinnitus was also examined.
RESULTS:
In the tinnitus group, the proportions of patients with and without unilateral chewing habits were 90.70% (39/43) and 9.30% (4/43), respectively. In the non-tinnitus group, the proportions of patients with and without unilateral chewing habits were 76.03% (184/242) and 23.97% (58/242), respectively. The proportion of patients with unilateral chewing habits in the tinnitus group was significantly higher than in the non-tinnitus group (χ2=4.613, P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed a positive correlation between tinnitus and unilateral chewing habits (P<0.05). In the left-sided tinnitus group, the proportion of left-sided unilateral chewers [54.55% (12/22)] was higher than that of right-sided unilateral chewers [45.45% (10/22)]. In the right-sided tinnitus group, the proportion of right-sided unilateral chewers [81.82% (9/11)] was higher than that of left-sided unilateral chewers [18.18% (2/11)]. The difference was statistically significant (χ2=7.282, P<0.05). A positive correlation was also found between the side of tinnitus and the side of unilateral chewing habits (P<0.05). The proportion of patients with pain was significantly higher in the tinnitus group than in the non-tinnitus group (P<0.05). No significant difference in the proportion of joint clicking or limited mouth opening and disc displacement (no disc displacement, unilateral disc displacement, bilateral disc displacement, reducible disc displacement, or irreducible disc displacement) was found between the tinnitus and non-tinnitus groups (P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
TMD with unilateral chewing habits may be a contributing factor to unexplained tinnitus. Unexplained tinnitus is correlated with joint pain in patients with TMD.

Objective To analyze temporal trends in infectious disease burden among Chinese elderly(≥60 years)using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study(GBD 2021),evaluate age-period-cohort effects on disease burden, predict trends through 2045,and propose evidence-based medication management strategies. Methods We conducted a threefold analysis of infectious disease burden from 1990 to 2021 using Joinpoint regression to identify temporal trends,Age-Period-Cohort(APC)modeling to disentangle epidemiological effects, and Nordpred projections for 2045 disease burden estimates. Results Over 32 years, all infectious disease categories except HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections demonstrated significant declines.Enteric infections showed the most rapid reductions in mortality(AAPC=-7.85,P﹤0.001)and disability-adjusted life year rates(DALYR;AAPC=-7.18,P﹤0.001).We also found a significant decrease in the incidence of tropical diseases and malaria(AAPC=-6.77,P﹤0.001).APC analysis found that the age effect was mostly negative in terms of the annual percentage change in mortality and DALYR for each disease, except for HIV/AIDS,with an overall decline in period risk over time, and a generally higher risk of morbidity and mortality for the early birth cohort, and an overall decline in the risk of each disease as the year of birth progressed, but the risk of HIV/AIDS death and DALY period and cohort risks trended upward. While the overall risk for certain diseases was slightly higher in males compared to females, the trends were largely consistent across both sexes. In terms of projections, the absolute prevalence of respiratory infections and tuberculosis in terms of number of cases and age-standardized rates, and the growth of the disease burden of HIV/AIDS were particularly prominent, making them important health challenges for the future. The burden of disease in the elderly often results in issues such as potential polypharmacy, which must be addressed to improve medication management. Conclusions China has achieved remarkable progress in reducing infectious disease burdens among older adults, though HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections present an escalating public health threat. These findings advocate for enhanced surveillance systems,age-specific prevention strategies, and precision medication protocols to optimize therapeutic outcomes in geriatric populations.

AIM:To study the improvement effect and possible mechanism of Shufeng Jiedu capsules(SFJDC)on viral pneumonia.METHODS:Forty-eight BALB/c mice were used to establish a viral pneumo-nia model by intranasal administration of influenza A virus H1N1.They were randomly divided into 4 groups, with twelve mice in each group.Except for the Model group, the treatment group was given oseltamivir(OSTW),low and high dose groups of Shufeng Jiedu capsules(SFJDC-L,SFJD-H)by gavage, take another 12 mice as the normal group,continu-ously administered for 7 days. The physical signs of each group of mice were observed during the ad-ministration process, and the daily body weight change rate and disease activity index was calculat-ed;After administration, lung, intestinal tissue, and intestinal contents were taken, and the pathological changes in mouse lung tissue were detected using hematoxylin eosin(HE)staining method,Alisin blue staining was used to detect goblet cells in the intes-tinal wall;RT-qPCR method for detecting viral load influenza(infA)and the expression of tumor necro-sis factor-a(TNF-α)and interleukin-6(IL-6)mRNA in mouse lung tissue;Detection of mouse gut mi-crobiota using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequenc-ing;ELISA method for detecting lipopolysaccharide(LPS),TNF-α and IL-6 level in mouse serum; The ex-pression of cyclic GMP AMP synthase(cGAS),inter-feron gene stimulating protein(STING),phospho-STING(p-STING),nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)phos-pho-nuclear factor-κB(p-NF-κB)in lung tissue and ZO-1,Occludin in small small intestine was detected by Western Blotting.RESULTS:Compared with the model group, the lung index and viral load of mice in the Shufeng Jiedu capsules group were signifi-cantly reduced(P<0.01);significant reduction in lung tissue inflammation accompanied by TNF-α;The expression level of IL-6 mRNA decreased(P<0.01);The abundance of Firmicutes and Lachnospi-raceae in the intestine significantly increased(P<0.01),while the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Bacteroidaceae communities significantly de-creased(P<0.05 or 0.01);The number of goblet cells in the small intestine epithelium significantly increased(P<0.01);the levels of serum LPS and TNF-α,IL-6 were significantly reduced(P<0.01);The protein expression level of cGAS,p-STING,p-NF-κB significantly decreased in lung tissue(P<0.05 or 0.01),ZO-1,Occludin significantly decreased in small intestine(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Shufeng Jie-du capsules reduces the inflammatory response of mice lung tissue, and its mechanism may be relat-ed to its regulation of intestinal flora, protection of intestinal mucosal barrier, and reduction the activa-tion of cGAS/STING/NF-κB signaling pathway ac-tived by LPS leakaging from the intestine.
