1.Applications of mussel adhesive protein in dermatology: current status and prospects

Mussel adhesive protein (MAP) is increasingly utilized in the biomedical field for the development of various bio-inspired products such as adhesives, protective films, and coatings with diverse properties, owing to its excellent biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, broad-spectrum adhesiveness, and biodegradability. The biological effects and mechanisms of MAP include adhesive film formation, cell migration and proliferation, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, and inhibition of pigment formation. In dermatological applications, MAP demonstrates a significant potential in antibacterial and antipruritic effects, wound healing, barrier repair, and scar regeneration. In recent years, advances in understanding the secretion, distribution, and adhesion mechanisms of MAP, along with innovations in extraction methods, have led to the development of various natural MAP, recombinant MAP, mussel-inspired, and mussel-mimetic biomedical products. However, the biosafety, tissue compatibility, and functionality of these products remain subjects of debate. Further investigation is needed to elucidate the interactions between MAP-based products and various organ tissues and cells within complex biological systems, as well as to thoroughly evaluate their safety and efficacy. Such efforts are essential to achieve high-value utilization of MAP and to explore broader application prospects. Future research may focus on integrating MAP with emerging technologies such as nanotechnology and smart materials to further develop its multifunctional applications in the field of dermatology.
2.Analysis and prevention of influencing factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders among bus drivers

Objective:To investigate the occurrence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) in bus drivers in Zhuhai City, analyze the ergonomic factors, and explore the prevention and control measures of WMSDs.Methods:From March to May 2023, 1675 active bus drivers from 5 branches of a bus group in Zhuhai were selected by stratified sampling method. The incidence of WMSDs among bus drivers in the past 12 months was investigated by using the modified Chinese Version of Musculoskeletal Disorders Questionnaire. The influencing factors of WMSDs were analyzed by χ2 test and generalized linear model. Results:The total incidence of WMSDs in bus drivers in the past 12 months was 47.2% (790/1675) , and the incidence of WMSDs in neck and shoulder and lower back was 36.9% (618/1675) and 31.7% (531/1675) , respectively. The χ2 test showed that there were statistically significant differences in the incidence of WMSDs among bus drivers with different individual factors such as body mass index (BMI) , physical exercise and looking down at mobile phones ( P<0.05) . There were significant differences in the incidence of WMSDs in the neck and shoulder of bus drivers with different years of service and number of stops on their routes ( P<0.05) . There were statistically significant differences in the incidence of WMSDs in the lower back of bus drivers with different one-way driving time, shift patterns, and rest breaks during work ( P<0.05) . Abnormal BMI, professional working years >12 years, uncomfortable working posture, frequent turning, slightly forward neck posture, large forward neck posture and long shoulder posture were the risk factors for WMSDs of bus drivers ( P<0.05) , and comfortable seat was the protective factor ( P<0.05) . One-way driving time >70 min, shift work schedules, uncomfortable working posture, slightly forward back posture, and frequent turning were the risk factors leading to lower back WMSDs ( P<0.05) , and physical exercise, comfortable driving cabin space, and seat comfort were the protective factors ( P<0.05) . Conclusion:The total incidence of WMSDs in bus drivers is higher, and ergonomic factors are related to the occurrence of WMSDs. In the implementation of bus driving space comfort, human-computer interaction interface friendliness and seat comfort, employers should be reasonable allocation of fitness facilities, regular training, reasonable shift organization and other measures to prevent and control the occurrence of bus drivers WMSDs.

5.Disease burden of acute viral hepatitis in Guangdong Province, 1990-2019

Objective:To examine the burden and trends of acute viral hepatitis in Guangdong Province from 1990 to 2019, and provide reference evidences for hepatitis prevention and control in the province.Methods:Data on acute viral hepatitis (hepatitis A, B, C, and E) in Guangdong from 1990 to 2019 were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 database. The incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) data were analyzed by age and gender, and the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to describe the changing trends in disease burden.Results:From 1999 to 2019, the standardized incidence, prevalence, mortality, and DALY of acute viral hepatitis in Guangdong were higher than the national averages. In 2019, 51.43% (2 245 087/4 365 221) of acute viral hepatitis cases in Guangdong Province were mainly attributed to hepatitis B, and 77.18% (106/138) of deaths were due to acute hepatitis B. In different age groups, except for acute hepatitis B, which was more common in adults, the incidence rates of other types of viral hepatitis such as hepatitis A, B, and E showed an overall decreasing trend with age. The mortality rates of different types of acute viral hepatitis, except for the <5 age group, increased with age. The overall incidence and mortality rates of acute viral hepatitis were higher in men than in women.Conclusions:The overall burden of acute viral hepatitis in Guangdong declined in 2019, but remained higher than the national level. Further efforts are needed to strengthen hepatitis prevention and screening in different population in Guangdong Province, especially in children and the elderly.
6.Investigation of symptom clusters and sentinel symptoms in early postoperative breast cancer patients

Objective To investigate the composition of symptom clusters in early postoperative breast cancer patients and analyze the sentinel symptoms of each cluster of symptoms. Methods A total of 309 patients who underwent mastectomy were conveniently sampled and surveyed using the Chinese version of the Anderson Symptom Inventory. Principal component analysis and varimax orthogonal rotation were employed to analyze the symptom clusters, and their associations were analyzed using the Apriori algorithm model to identify the sentinel symptoms of each cluster of symptoms. Results Three symptom clusters were identified in early postoperative breast cancer patients: neuro-sleep symptom cluster [fatigue (weakness)-distress-pain-sleepiness-restless sleep], sensory-perception symptom cluster (numbness-forgetfulness-shortness of breath-sadness-dry mouth), and digestive system symptom cluster (nausea-vomiting-loss of appetite). Fatigue was the sentinel symptom of the neuro-sleep symptom cluster, numbness was the sentinel symptom of the sensory-perception symptom cluster, and nausea was the sentinel symptom of the digestive system symptom cluster. Conclusion Early postoperative breast cancer patients experience multiple symptom clusters, with sentinel symptoms existing in each cluster. Healthcare staff should develop intervention measures based on sentinel symptoms to improve the efficiency of symptom management and reduce the degree of symptom distress for patients.
7.Increased expression of microRNA-34c in peripheral blood of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients associated with diabetic foot ulcer

Objective:To examine the correlations of microRNA-34c(miR-34c) expression in the peripheral blood with the onset of diabetic foot ulcer(DFU)and diabetic foot osteomyelitis(DFO)in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Methods:Sixty newly-diagnosed T2DM patients without DFU(T2DM group), 112 T2DM patients with DFU(DFU group), and 60 healthy controls with normal glucose tolerance(NC group)were included. The 112 T2DM patients with DFU were further divided into DFO( n=64)and NDFO( n=48)groups. The levels of miR-34c were determined by quantitative real-time PCR, while clinical features and risk factors of DFU and DFO were explored. Results:A significant increase in the expression level of miR-34c in peripheral blood was observed in T2DM group compared with NC group[2.99(1.45-6.22) vs 1.01(0.89-1.52), P<0.05], and a markedly increased miR-34c expression level was noted in DFU group compared with T2DM group [9.65(6.15-18.63) vs 2.99(1.45-6.22), P<0.01]. Additionally, the expression level of miR-34c in peripheral blood significantly increased in DFO group compared to NDFO group [13.46(8.89-19.11) vs 6.02(5.93-14.72), P<0.01]. Moreover, there was a positive correlation between the expression level of miR-34c in peripheral blood and the amputation rate in patients in DFU group( P=0.030), and a negative correlation in the expression level of miR-34c( P=0.025)with healing rate of DFU after eight weeks. The multivariate logistic regression analysis confirmed that a high expression of miR-34c was an independent risk factor for DFU and DFO( OR=3.52, 4.13; both P<0.01). Conclusion:An increased expression of miR-34c in peripheral blood of T2DM patients might be closely related to the occurrence, development, and prognosis of DFU and DFO.

10.On-site epidemiological investigation of a carbon monoxide poisoning incident

Nighteen people at a restaurant experienced dizziness headaches and other discomforts in six days. According to the description method, the time and location distribution were found to be concentrated. A second Investigation was conducted at the same time as the onset of the case, the test found that the carbon monoxide concentration of second floor up to 539 mg/m 3. The on-site testing found that when 2 steam generator in snack room on the first floor turned on, the carbon monoxide concentration on the top of elevator on the second floor was 1225.0 mg/m 3. After the accident, the restaurant replaced a steam generator, the carbon monoxide concentration on the top of the new and old steam generator were 350 mg/m 3 and >1 000 mg/m 3, respectively. After the steam generators were fitted with exhaust smoke pipe and exhasust hood, the carbon monoxide concentrations of on the top of the vegetable transfer elevator and the room on the second floor were both 0.4 mg/m 3, and there were no cases of recurrence. It was determined that this was a carbon monoxide poisoning incident caused by a high concentration of carbon monoxide emitted by the steam generators, which spread to the second floor of the private room through the vegetable transfer elevator.
