Objective To study mechanical properties of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-based textile valves woven with nickel-titanium (NiTi) wires by finite element method, and combined with in vitro hemodynamic testing, to analyze the effect of wire quantity and woven position on hemodynamic performance of PET textile valve. Methods The three-dimensional (3D) geometric models of PET valves without wires and models of PET valves with wires by different numbers and distributions in radial direction were constructed using modeling software. Material properties of PET valves and wires were given based on the literature and experimental data. The transvalvular pressure difference curves of PET valves obtained from in vitro pulsatile flow experiments were used as boundary conditions. Stress distributions of the valve during peak systole and diastole were studied by finite element analysis software. Hydrodynamic performance of the valve with wires was evaluated by in vitro pulsatile flow experiments. ResultsThe finite element analysis results showed that the radially woven NiTi wires could enhance support for the PET textile valve, and support force and area of the valve in belly region of the valve leaflet with evenly distributed metal wires increased with the number of metal wires. The situation of support force was similar for silk distributions on both sides of the belly. The weaving of wires reduced stress concentration on the PET textile valve to a certain extent. The pulsatile flow experiment results showed that the stability of opening and closing shapes, effective opening area (EOA), regurgitation fraction (RF) and transvalvular pressure differences for two kinds of the PET valves with woven wires were better than those of the PET valves without wires. Conclusions Weaving metal wires in radial direction of the PET textile valve can effectively reduce stress concentrations on the PET textile valve during the cardiac cycle, and reduce tearing possibility of the valve leaflet. The woven metal wires can improve opening and closing stability of PET textile valve in in vitro hydrodynamic test, increase EOA and reduce RF and transvalvular pressure difference of the PET valve.

Numerical simulation of stent deployment is very important to the surgical planning and risk assess of the interventional treatment for the cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. Our group developed a framework to deploy the braided stent and the stent graft virtually by finite element simulation. By using the framework, the whole process of the deployment of the flow diverter to treat a cerebral aneurysm was simulated, and the deformation of the parent artery and the distributions of the stress in the parent artery wall were investigated. The results provided some information to improve the intervention of cerebral aneurysm and optimize the design of the flow diverter. Furthermore, the whole process of the deployment of the stent graft to treat an aortic dissection was simulated, and the distributions of the stress in the aortic wall were investigated when the different oversize ratio of the stent graft was selected. The simulation results proved that the maximum stress located at the position where the bare metal ring touched the artery wall. The results also can be applied to improve the intervention of the aortic dissection and the design of the stent graft.

Flashing light effect on microalgae could significantly improve the light efficiency and biomass productivity of microalgae. In this paper, the baffles were introduced into the traditional flat plate photobioreactor so as to enhance the flashing light effect of microalgae. Making Chlorella sp. as the model microalgae, the effect of light intensity and inlet velocity on the biomass concentration of Chlorella sp. and light efficiency were evaluated. The results showed that, when the inlet velocity was 0.16 m/s, with the increase of light intensity, the cell dry weight of Chlorella sp. increased and light efficiency decreased. With increasing the inlet velocity, the cell dry weight of Chlorella sp. and light efficiency both increased under the condition of 500 μmol/(m2 x s) light intensity. The cell dry weight of Chlorella sp. cultivated in the novel flat plate photobioreactor was 39.23% higher than that of the traditional one, which showed that the flashing light effect of microalgae could be improved in the flat plate photobioreactor with inclined baffles built-in.

Chinese Journal of Biotechnology 2011;27(4):606-613
The knowledge of oxygen evolution characteristics, which is a symbol of photosynthetic activity, under various light conditions is important for photobioreactor design and operation. In this study, we constructed a device to investigate oxygen evolution characteristics of Spirulina platensis under two different light regimes: 1) continuous illumination of various light intensities (14-6 500 micromol/(m2 x s)); 2) medium frequency L/D cycles of four different light intensities (69, 505, 1 330, 4 265 micromol/(m2s)). Light limited region, intermediate region, light saturated region and light inhibited region of light intensity were recognized according to their relationship with oxygen evolution rate (OER) under continuous illumination. Investigation of S. platensis under L/D cycles showed whether photosynthetic efficiency could be increased with increasing L/D frequency largely depended on the light intensity applied. The higher the light intensity, the larger the photosynthetic enhancement could be expected with the increase of L/D frequency. The largest light integration effect was found under L/D cycles of high light intensity (4 265 micromol/(m2 x s)) and medium light fraction (k = 0.6), while light integration effect was totally absent under low light fractions (k < 0.2). We also discussed their implications to the practical aspects of microalgae cultivation.

Objective: To investigate the effect and mechanism of emodin (EMO) on human pancreatic cancer cell line BxPC-3 in vivo. Methods: After the pancreatic cancer model in nude mice was established, the mice were divided into four groups: control group (NS 0.2mL/d by i.p. injection), EMO group (EMO 40mg?kg-1?d-1 by i.p. injection), and Gemcitabine (GEM) group (GEM 80mg/kg, twice/week by i.p. injection) with 8 mice each group. After 2 weeks of administration, the mice were sacrificed, detected the body-weight change of nude nice before and after the experiment, and recorded the growth inhibition rate of tumor (TGI). Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining for ki-67 and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated nicked labeling assay (TUNEL) were undertaken to detect the cell proliferation and cell apoptosis in tumor tissue in xenograft nude mice. Results: The inter-group comparisons in body-weight of nude mice showed no significant difference in comparing group NS(27.0?1.64)g with group EMO(25.1?1.58)g and GEM(25.6? 1.47)g.The EMO group was 38.46%, the GEM group was 44.23%. The inter-group comparisons in immunohistochemical analysis of ki-67 showed significant difference in comparing group NS IOD(219.5?17.98) with group EMO IOD(146.6? 11.57)and GEM IOD(139.5?12.55), (P
