Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) is a traditional Chinese herb that is commonly known for its cardiovascular and hepatoprotective benefits. Recent studies have confirmed that Danshen and its bioactive components can influence gut microbial homeostasis, thereby affecting Helicobacter pylori (HP) colonization in the human stomach. HP is a bacterial pathogen associated with various gastrointestinal diseases. Current HP treatments mainly involve antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors. However, their efficacy is strongly compromised by the rapid emergence of antibiotic resistance in HP and genetic heterogeneity among patients. The interaction between Danshen and gut microbial status provides a novel perspective for HP treatment. Understanding the medical properties of Danshen in altering gut microbiota and eliminating HP, as well as the underlying mechanisms, is important for improving human gastrointestinal healthcare. This review investigates the interaction between Danshen and gut microbiota and its impact on HP infection using databases including Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar. We explored the unconventional intersection between Danshen, gut microbiota, and HP infection, shedding light on their intricate interplay and potential therapeutic implications. A comprehensive understanding of this interaction provides valuable insights into developing novel therapeutic strategies that target the gut microbiota to mitigate HP-associated gastrointestinal disorders. Purpose::Cerebral edema (CE) is the main secondary injury following traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by road traffic accidents (RTAs). It is challenging to be predicted timely. In this study, we aimed to develop a prediction model for CE by identifying its risk factors and comparing the timing of edema occurrence in TBI patients with varying levels of injuries.Methods::This case-control study included 218 patients with TBI caused by RTAs. The cohort was divided into CE and non-CE groups, according to CT results within 7 days. Demographic data, imaging data, and clinical data were collected and analyzed. Quantitative variables that follow normal distribution were presented as mean ± standard deviation, those that do not follow normal distribution were presented as median (Q 1, Q 3). Categorical variables were expressed as percentages. The Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to identify risk factors for CE. Logistic curve fitting was performed to predict the time to secondary CE in TBI patients with different levels of injuries. The efficacy of the model was evaluated using the receiver operator characteristic curve. Results::According to the study, almost half (47.3%) of the patients were found to have CE. The risk factors associated with CE were bilateral frontal lobe contusion, unilateral frontal lobe contusion, cerebral contusion, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and abbreviated injury scale (AIS). The odds ratio values for these factors were 7.27 (95% confidence interval ( CI): 2.08 -25.42, p = 0.002), 2.85 (95% CI: 1.11 -7.31, p = 0.030), 2.62 (95% CI: 1.12 -6.13, p = 0.027), 2.44 (95% CI: 1.25 -4.76, p = 0.009), and 1.5 (95% CI: 1.10 -2.04, p = 0.009), respectively. We also observed that patients with mild/moderate TBI (AIS ≤ 3) had a 50% probability of developing CE 19.7 h after injury (χ 2= 13.82, adjusted R2 = 0.51), while patients with severe TBI (AIS > 3) developed CE after 12.5 h (χ 2= 18.48, adjusted R2 = 0.54). Finally, we conducted a receiver operator characteristic curve analysis of CE time, which showed an area under the curve of 0.744 and 0.672 for severe and mild/moderate TBI, respectively. Conclusion::Our study found that the onset of CE in individuals with TBI resulting from RTAs was correlated with the severity of the injury. Specifically, those with more severe injuries experienced an earlier onset of CE. These findings suggest that there is a critical time window for clinical intervention in cases of CE secondary to TBI.

In recent years,with in-depth study of bladder sensation related mechanisms,numerous ion channels,neurotransmitters and nerve receptors have been found to participate in the regulation of bladder sensation,including TRPV,P2X and Piezo,as well as CBR and HCN.Thanks to the relevant research on the neural signal pathway from the cerebral cortex to the bladder wall and the maturity of clinical measurement methods for bladder sensation,we can further study the abnormal bladder sensation in patients with overactive bladder(OAB),so as to explore its mechanism.Bladder hypersensitivity,as one of the current research hotspots,is receiving increasing attention from researchers.This article reviews the mechanism of bladder hypersensitivity from the aspects of clinical measurement methods of bladder sensation,ion channel,neurotransmitters and nerve receptors related to bladder sensation,in order to explore its significance in the pathogenesis of OAB.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and underactive bladder (UAB) are common types of lower urinary tract dysfunction in women.As the treatment mechanisms of the two conditions are contradictory, the treatment of SUI patients complicated with UAB remains a difficult clinical problem.In order to improve the treatment rate of such patients and promote research, this paper reviews the latest domestic and overseas diagnostic criteria of UAB, summarizes the treatment experience of conventional midurethral sling (tension-free vaginal tape or outside-in transobturator tape) and adjustable sling procedures (transobturator adjustable tape or Remeex system) combined with medication or intermittent catheterization, and the application prospects of cutting-edge technologies such as stem cell injection, cytokine therapy and gene therapy, so as to provide reference for clinicians and researchers.

Based on the octahedral modifiable structures and kinetic inertness, platinum (IV) complexes have become antitumor prodrug candidates to mitigate platinum (II) drug resistance and side effects. The nitrobenzoxadiazole derivative (NBDHEX) can inhibit the activity of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and be introduced to conjugate with platinum(II) complexes DN603 and DN604 to yield two platinum (IV) complexes DN603/DN604-NBD. In vitro assays demonstrated that DN603/DN604-NBD could significantly inhibit the proliferation of cisplatin-sensitive A549 and resistant A549/cDDP cancer cells. The uptake of DN603/DN604-NBD in A549/cDDP cells was much higher than that of cisplatin, causing a higher rate of cell apoptosis and a greater ratio of Bax/Bcl-2, the activation of caspase-3 and cleavage of DNA repair enzyme (PARP), inducing the mitochondria-dependent cell apoptosis pathway. DN603/DN604-NBD could induce higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, significantly enhance phosphorylation of histone H2AX on Ser-139 (γ-H2AX) fluorescence intensity and cause a greater degree of DNA double-stranded damage. Studies have shown that GSTs kinase GSTP1 was highly expressed in cisplatin-resistant cancer cells. Moreover, DN603/DN604-NBD targeted GSTP1 to suppress its expression level. By using the ROS scavenger NAC and the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) inhibitor SP600125 in advance, it was found that DN603/DN604-NBD could significantly increase the number of living cells and decrease the phosphorylation levels of JNK and c-Jun. The results indicated that DN603/DN604-NBD could produce higher levels of ROS to activate JNK-mediated signaling pathway, induce apoptosis in tumor cells to overcome cisplatin resistance. All the animal experiments were approved by Animal Ethics Committee of Southeast University (grant No. 20210303025). In vivo assays confirmed that DN603/DN604-NBD could inhibit the growth of A549 xenograft tumors with nearly no toxicity and fewer side effects. Taken together, DN603/DN604-NBD are investigated as two potential novel platinum (IV) prodrug candidates for anticancer therapy.

A 10-year follow-up case of aldosterone and cortisol-secreting adrenocortical carcinoma, a rare disease presenting as an adrenal space-occupying lesion accompanied with hypertension and hypokalemia was reported, and the medical record was investigated in detail. Through case presentation and literature review, it was noted that patients with adrenocortical carcinoma presented a difference in clinical manifestations, pathology, and biological behaviors. This paper may help clinicians enhance their understanding of adrenocortical carcinoma. Especially significant adrenal space-occupying lesions highly suspicious of recurrence and producing different types of endocrine hormones should be paid more attention.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prospective association between cumulative resting heart rate (cumRHR) and rapid renal function decline (RRFD) in a cohort of individuals aged 60 and older. METHODS: In the Tianjin Chronic Kidney Disease Cohort Study, the individuals who underwent three consecutive physical examinations between 2014 and 2017, with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) greater than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m² and aged 60 years or older were enrolled. A total of 27,564 patients were prospectively followed up from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2020. The 3-year cumRHR was calculated. The primary outcome was RRFD, defined as an annualized decline in eGFR of 5 mL/min per 1.73 m² or greater. Logistic and restricted spline regression models and subgroup analysis were used to investigate the association of cumRHR with RRFD after adjusting for all confounders. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 3.2 years, a total of 4,347 (15.77%) subjects developed RRFD. In fully-adjusted models, compared with the lowest quartile of cumRHR, the odds ratio (OR) for the highest was 1.44 (1.28-1.61), P < 0.001. Furthermore, each 1-standard deviation (27.97 beats/min per year) increment in cumRHR was associated with a 17% (P < 0.001) increased risk of RRFD, with a linear positive correlation (P for non-linear = 0.803). Participants with a 3-year cumRHR ≥ 207 (beats/min) * year (equivalent to ≥ 69 beats/min per year in 3 years) were found to be at a higher risk of RRFD. CONCLUSIONS The cumRHR is significantly associated with a higher risk of RRFD among older adults. These results might provide an effective goal for managing and delaying the decline of renal function in the older adults.
