Objective To investigate the effectiveness of the integrated schistosomiasis control programme in Sichuan Province during the stage moving from transmission interruption to elimination (2015—2023), so as to provide insights into formulation of the schistosomiasis control measures during the post-elimination stage. Methods Schistosomiasis control data were retrospectively collected from departments of health, agriculture and rural affairs, forestry and grassland, water resources, and natural resources in Sichuan Province from 2015 to 2023, and a database was created to document examinations and treatments of human and livestock schistosomiasis, and snail survey and control, conversion of paddy fields to dry fields, ditch hardening, rivers and lakes management and building of forests for snail control and schistosomiasis prevention. The completion of schistosomiasis control measures was investigated, and the effectiveness was evaluated. Results A total of 20 545 155 person-times received human schistosomiasis examinations in Sichuan Province during the period from 2015 to 2023, and 232 157 person-times were seropositive, with a reduction in the seroprevalence from 2.10% (44 299/2 107 003) in 2015 to 1.12% (9 361/837 896) in 2023 (χ2 = 7.68, P < 0.001). The seroprevalence of human schistosomiasis appeared a tendency towards a decline in Sichuan Province over years from 2015 to 2023 (b = −8.375, t = −10.052, P < 0.001); however, no egg positive individuals were identified during the period from 2018 to 2023, with the prevalence of human Schistosoma japonicum infections maintained at 0. Expanded chemotherapy was administered to 2 754 515 person-times, and medical assistance of advanced schistosomiasis was given to 6 436 persontimes, with the treatment coverage increasing from 46.80% (827/1 767) in 2015 to 64.87% (868/1 338) in 2023. Parasitological tests for livestock schistosomiasis were performed in 35 113 herd-times, and expanded chemotherapy was administered to 513 043 herd-times, while the number of fenced livestock decreased from 121 631 in 2015 to 103 489 in 2023, with a reduction of 14.92%. Snail survey covered 433 621.80 hm2 in Sichuan Province from 2015 to 2023, with 204 602.81 hm2 treated by chemical control and 4 637.74 hm2 by environmental modifications. The area of snail habitats decreased from the peak of 5 029.80 hm2 in 2016 to 3 709.72 hm2 in 2023, and the actual area of snail habitats decreased from the peak of 8 585.48 hm2 in 2016 to 473.09 hm2 in 2023. The mean density of living snails remained low across the study period except in 2017 (0.62 snails/0.1 m2). Schistosomiasis control efforts by departments of agriculture and rural affairs in Sichuan Province included conversion of paddy fields to dry fields covering 153 346.93 hm2, hardening of 6 110.31 km ditches, building of 70 356 biogas digesters, replacement of cattle with 227 161 sets of machines, and captive breeding of 21 161 070 livestock from 2015 to 2023, and the control efforts by departments of water resources included rivers and lakes management measuring 5 676.92 km and renovation of 2 331 irrigation areas, while the control efforts by departments of forestry and grassland included building of forests for snail control and schistosomiasis prevention covering 23 913.33 hm2, renovation of snail control forests covering 8 720 hm2 and newly building of shelterbelts covering 764 686.67 hm2. All 63 endemic counties (cities and districts) had achieved the criterion for schistosomiasis elimination criteria in Sichuan Province by the end of 2023. Conclusion Following the integrated control efforts from 2015 to 2023, remarkable achievements have been obtained in the schistosomiasis control programme in Sichuan Province, with all endemic counties successfully attaining the schistosomiasis elimination target at the county level.

Journal of Integrative Medicine 2022;20(3):274-280
OBJECTIVE:
Acute lung injury (ALI) is a serious respiratory dysfunction caused by pathogen or physical invasion. The strong induced inflammation often causes death. Tanshinone IIA (Tan-IIA) is the major constituent of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge and has been shown to display anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of Tan-IIA on ALI.
METHODS:
A murine model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI was used. The lungs and serum samples of mice were extracted at 3 days after treatment. ALI-induced inflammatory damages were confirmed from cytokine detections and histomorphology observations. Effects of Tan-IIA were investigated using in vivo and in vitro ALI models. Tan-IIA mechanisms were investigated by performing Western blot and flow cytometry experiments. A wound-healing assay was performed to confirm the Tan-IIA function.
RESULTS:
The cytokine storm induced by LPS treatment was detected at 3 days after LPS treatment, and alveolar epithelial damage and lymphocyte aggregation were observed. Tan-IIA treatment attenuated the LPS-induced inflammation and reduced the levels of inflammatory cytokines released not only by inhibiting neutrophils, but also by macrophage. Moreover, we found that macrophage activation and polarization after LPS treatment were abrogated after applying the Tan-IIA treatment. An in vitro assay also confirmed that including the Tan-IIA supplement increased the relative amount of the M2 subtype and decreased that of M1. Rebalanced macrophages and Tan-IIA inhibited activations of the nuclear factor-κB and hypoxia-inducible factor pathways. Including Tan-IIA and macrophages also improved alveolar epithelial repair by regulating macrophage polarization.
CONCLUSION
This study found that while an LPS-induced cytokine storm exacerbated ALI, including Tan-IIA could prevent ALI-induced inflammation and improve the alveolar epithelial repair, and do so by regulating macrophage polarization.

Chinese Journal of Traumatology 2021;24(4):187-208
There has been a long history since human beings began to realize the existence of post-traumatic symptoms. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a diagnostic category adopted in 1980 in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Ⅲ, described typical clusters of psychiatric symptoms occurring after traumatic events. Abundant researches have helped deepen the understanding of PTSD in terms of epidemiological features, biological mechanisms, and treatment options. The prevalence of PTSD in general population ranged from 6.4% to 7.8% and was significantly higher among groups who underwent major public traumatic events. There has been a long way in the studies of animal models and genetic characteristics of PTSD. However, the high comorbidity with other stress-related psychiatric disorders and complexity in the pathogenesis of PTSD hindered the effort to find specific biological targets for PTSD. Neuroimage was widely used to elucidate the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms of PTSD. Functional MRI studies have showed that PTSD was linked to medial prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex and sub-cortical structures like amygdala and hippocampus, and to explore the functional connectivity among these brain areas which might reveal the possible neurobiological mechanism related to PTSD symptoms. For now, cognitive behavior therapy-based psychotherapy, including combination with adjunctive medication, showed evident treatment effects on PTSD. The emergence of more effective PTSD pharmacotherapies awaits novel biomarkers from further fundamental research. Several natural disasters and emergencies have inevitably increased the possibility of suffering from PTSD in the last two decades, making it critical to strengthen PTSD research in China. To boost PTSD study in China, the following suggestions might be helpful: (1) establishing a national psychological trauma recover project, and (2) exploring the mechanisms of PTSD with joint effort and strengthening the indigenized treatment of PTSD.
7. Arthroscopic suture bridge technique with suture anchor in the treatment of acromioclavicular dislocation
Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2020;25(9):1417-1422
BACKGROUND: There is no uniform standard for acromioclavicular dislocation. Clavicular hook plate fixation is a commonly used fixation method clinically, but minimally invasive ligament reconstruction technology and arthroscopic surgery have become a research hotspot. OBJECTIVE: To observe the application value of suture bridge with thread anchor under arthroscopy in the treatment of acromioclavicular dislocation. METHODS: Patients with Tossy type III acromioclavicular dislocation who were admitted to Department of Orthopedic Surgery of General Hospital of Jizhong Energy Xingtai Mining Group between January 2016 and April 2018 were selected as the subjects. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. The patients in the arthroscopy group were treated with arthroscopic suture bridge technique with suture anchor for reduction and fixation, while those in the clavicle hook plate group were treated with clavicular hook plate for internal fixation. The length of surgical incision, duration of surgery, hospitalization time and time to return to work of both groups were recorded. The shoulder function was evaluated according to the Lazzcano criterion of curative effect at 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery. The visual analogue scale score of shoulder pain, abduction and raising, forward bend and raising were compared between the two groups. All patients were followed up for 1 year to record the occurrence of complications. This study was approved by the Medical Ethics Committee of General Hospital of Jizhong Energy Xingtai Mining Group. All subjects signed the informed consent. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) There was no significant difference in the duration of surgery between the two groups (P > 0.05). The surgical incision, hospitalization time and time to return to work of the arthroscopy group were significantly better than those of the clavicle hook plate group (P < 0.01). (2) According to the Lazzcano criterion of curative effect, the excellent and good rate of curative effect in the arthroscopy group (84%) was significantly better than that in the clavicle hook plate group (66%) at 3 months after surgery (P < 0.05). The excellent and good rates of curative effect in the arthroscopy group at 6 and 12 months after surgery were higher than those in the clavicle hook plate group (P > 0.05). (3) Visual analogue scale scores of the two groups showed a decreasing trend at 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery (P < 0.01). The visual analogue scale score of arthroscopy group was significantly lower than that of the clavicle hook plate group at the same time point (P < 0.01). (4) Angles of abduction and raising, forward bend and raising of both groups showed an increasing trend at 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery (P < 0.01). The angles of abduction and raising, forward bend and raising of the arthroscopy group were larger than those of the clavicle hook plate group at the same time point (P < 0.01). (5) The 1-year follow-up results showed that the incidence of complications in the arthroscopy group (6%) was significantly lower than that in the clavicle hook plate group (63%) (P < 0.01). (6) Compared with clavicular hook plate fixation, the technique of suture anchors under arthroscopy has the advantages of small trauma, quick recovery, fewer complications and no need to remove endografts again. Meanwhile, the surgery can also clearly diagnose the concomitant lesions in the joints and treat them when necessary, so as to improve the treatment effect.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the relationship between plasma miR-93-5p and the risk of esophageal cancer, as well as the influence of miR-93-5p on the biological function of esophageal cancer cells, exerted through exosomes.
METHODSThe expression of plasma miR-93-5p in esophageal cancer patients and healthy controls was analysed by real-time quantitative PCR. The influence of miR-93-5p on the risk and prognosis of esophageal carcinoma was analyzed by conditional logistic regression and survival analysis. The effect of miR-93-5p on the biological function of recipient cells was investigated by establishing an in vitro donor cell co-culture model. The target gene of miR-93-5p was validated by luciferase reporter assay and Western Blotting.
RESULTSUpregulation of plasma miR-93-5p expression significantly increases the risk of esophageal cancer and is associated with poor prognosis. miR-93-5p transferred by exosomes promotes the proliferation of recipient esophageal cancer cells and affects the expression of PTEN and its downstream proteins p21 and cyclin D1.
CONCLUSIONOur study provides a reference for the identification of biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of esophageal cancer.
