Dietary habits and quality were surveyed using the Nutrition Quotient for the Elderly (NQ-E). Participants (n = 20) recorded videos of their meals, which were subsequently analyzed for food and nutrient intake and compared with intakes of participants of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) aged ≥ 80 yrs (n = 1,769), which were assessed via 24-h recall. RESULTS: Most participants (85.2%) consumed similar amounts of food at meals; however, only 65.1% ingested meals at regular times. The mean NQ-E score was 48.0 ± 11.9 and did not differ among regions. In Gwangju participants, subjective income was positively associated with diet quality. The mean energy and grain intakes per meal were lower, whereas the percent energy intake from protein and intakes of seaweed, meat and poultry, and iron were higher in GuGokSun and HwaDam participants with meal recordings than in KNHANES participants. CONCLUSION Among Korean adults aged ≥ 95 yrs, few regional variations exist in dietary quality and habits, although associations with diet quality vary within regions. Adults 95 yrs and older exhibit lower energy intake but higher intakes of seaweed, meat and poultry, and iron than adults aged ≥ 80 yrs. Notwithstanding, further longitudinal studies on centenarians are warranted.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)-based therapy holds promise for treating ARDS, as MSCs manifest immunomodulatory and regenerative properties that mitigate inflammation and enhance tissue repair. Primed MSCs, modified to augment specific functionalities, demonstrate superior therapeutic efficacy in targeted therapies compared to naive MSCs. This study explored the immunomodulatory potential of MSCs using mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) assays and co-culture experiments with M1/M2 macrophages. Additionally, RNA sequencing was employed to identify alterations in immune and inflammation-related factors in primed MSCs. The therapeutic effects of primed MSCs were assessed in an LPS-induced ARDS mouse model, and the underlying mechanisms were investigated through spatial transcriptomics analysis. The study revealed that MSCs primed with IFN-γ and IL-1β significantly enhanced the suppression of T cell activity compared to naive MSCs, concurrently inhibiting TNF-α while increasing IL-10 production in macrophages. Notably, combined treatment with these two cytokines resulted in a significant upregulation of immune and inflammation-regulating factors. Furthermore, our analyses elucidated the mechanisms behind the therapeutic effects of primed MSCs, including the inhibition of inflammatory cell infiltration in lung tissue, modulation of immune and inflammatory responses, and enhancement of elastin fiber formation. Signaling pathway analysis confirmed that efficacy could be enhanced by modulating NFκB and TNF-α signaling. In conclusion, in early-phase ARDS, primed MSCs displayed enhanced homing capabilities, improved lung function, and reduced inflammation.

Background: and Purpose Episodic ataxia type 2 (EA2) is characterized by recurrent vertigo and ataxia due to mutations in CACNA1A that encodes the α 1A-subunit of the P/Q-type voltage-gated calcium channel. This study aimed to determine intellectual function in EA2. Methods: During 2019–2023, 13 patients (6 males, age range=10–52 years, median age=29 years) with a genetically confirmed diagnosis of EA2 had their intellectual function evaluated using the Korean versions of the Wechsler Intelligence Scales (version IV) for adults or children in 3 referral-based university hospitals in South Korea. Results: The full-scale intelligence quotients (FSIQs) among the 13 patients were below the average (90–109) in 11, low average (80–89) in 5 (38.5%), borderline (70–79) in 1 (7.7%), and indicated intellectual disability (≤69) in 5 (38.5%). These patterns of cognitive impairments were observed in all four of the following subtests: verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. The FSIQ was not correlated with the ages at onset for vertigo and ataxia (Pearson correlation: p=0.40). Conclusions Patients with EA2 may have hidden intellectual disabilities even without a history of epilepsy or administration of antiepileptic drugs, and should be considered for genetic counseling and therapeutic interventions. Given the availability of medication to control episodic vertigo and ataxia, early diagnosis and management are important in preventing irreversible brain dysfunction in EA2.

Purpose: To report a case of spontaneous closure of a chronic recurrent full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) in a previously vitrectomized eye.Case summary: A 58-year-old female who underwent vitrectomy for the treatment of a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) on the right eye 2 years ago complaint of decreased vision on the same eye. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.2. The fundus photograph and optical coherence tomography revealed a FTMH with perifoveal cystoid macular edema (CME). While surgical treatment for the macular hole (MH) was scheduled, the spontaneous closure of MH was observed with resolution of CME. BCVA improved to 0.5. During the long-term follow-up periods, FTMH with CME recurred 2 times or more. In all events, the hole was spontaneously closed in 1 month, accompanied with resolution of CME. Conclusions A FTMH with CME developed 3 times for 11 years following RRD repair, which was spontaneously closed with CME resolution in a month. In case of chronic recurrent FTMH in vitrectomized eye, it would be better to determine surgical treatment after closely monitoring changes in hole and CME.
