Cancer Research and Treatment 2026;58(1):221-231
Purpose:
The aim of this study is to compare the detection ability of quality of life (QoL) changes and responsiveness of the KOrean QUality of life in Stomach cancer patients Study group (KOQUSS)-40 and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ).
Materials and Methods:
A multicenter prospective observational study was conducted to evaluate QoL changes after various gastrectomies between January 2021 and April 2022. Participants were instructed to complete the KOQUSS-40 and EORTC QLQ-C30/STO22 preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. QoL changes over time and QoL responsiveness were assessed for each questionnaire.
Results:
Data from 491 patients who underwent curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer at 22 institutions were analyzed. The summary scores of the KOQUSS-40 and EORTC QLQ-STO22 showed significant differences between the total and proximal gastrectomy groups (p=0.044 and p=0.038, respectively), but no difference was observed for the EORTC QLQ-C30. Dysphagia on the KOQUSS-40 was significantly different between the total and proximal gastrectomy groups (p=0.031); however, dysphagia on the EORTC QLQ-STO22 did not differ. The responsiveness of the KOQUSS-40 was similar to that of the EORTC QLQ in patients who experienced ≥ 10% body weight loss, but approximately 10% less in patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy than the EORTC QLQ.
Conclusion
KOQUSS-40 has several advantages over EORTC QLQ-C30/STO22 when comparing QoL between the total and proximal gastrectomy groups. The findings provide information for researchers investigating the QoL of patients who have undergone curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer.
2.The Concept of Autism in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder: Historical Divergence and Phenomenological Rapprochement

Journal of the Korean Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 2026;37(2):82-94
This study aims to trace the historical origins and conceptual divergence of “autism” as employed in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD), and to examine their recent rapprochement through the lens of phenomenological psychopathology. A narrative review was conducted to analyze primary historical sources, including works by Bleuler, Kanner, and their predecessors, along with contemporary literature on neurodevelopmental perspectives, social cognition, and phenomenological psychopathology. The analysis focused on comparing the structures of self-experience between patients with ASD and those with SSD using frameworks such as ipseity disturbance and anomalous self-experience. Bleuler’s “Autismus” (1911) denoted active withdrawal from reality and construction of an inner fantasy world in schizophrenia, whereas Kanner’s “infantile autism” (1943) described innate deficits in forming affective bonds. Despite strict diagnostic separation since DSM-III, recent research reveals shared genetic pathways, social cognitive impairments, and clinical presentations. Phenomenological analysis revealed that while both conditions share common predicaments in being-in-the-world, they manifest qualitatively distinct patterns of self-disorder. Patients with SSD exhibit ipseity disturbance characterized by instability of the minimal self, diminished self-affection, and hyperreflexivity, whereas patients with ASD generally show preserved minimal self but deficient intersubjective attunement. Social withdrawal in SSD represents a defensive retreat against ontological anxiety and self-dissolution, whereas in ASD it reflects involuntary isolation arising from impaired intuitive connections with others. ASD and SSD share common predicaments in being-in-the-world, yet manifest qualitatively distinct forms of self-disorder. This phenomenological framework offers a promising transdiagnostic approach for clarifying the relationship between these two conditions and understanding the essence of “autism.”

Gut and Liver 2026;20(1):47-58
Background/Aims:
The absence of standardized clinical minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) breakpoints for Helicobacter pylori infection has resulted in inconsistent resistance definitions, even within the same research group in Korea. Therefore, establishing epidemiological cutoff values (ECOFFs) is essential for standardization.
Methods:
The MIC distributions for antibiotics commonly used against H. pylori infection in South Korea were analyzed from 2015 to 2023. A total of 5,925 primary H. pylori isolates were collected from five data sources, and MIC values were determined using the serial 2-fold agar dilution method. The ECOFFinder program was used to establish ECOFFs for six antibiotics.
Results:
The tentative ECOFFs for amoxicillin and clarithromycin were 0.125 μg/mL. The ECOFFs for levofloxacin, metronidazole, and tetracycline were 0.5, 8.0, and 0.25 μg/mL, respec-tively. The ECOFF for rifabutin could not be determined due to insufficient data. On the basis of these ECOFFs, the resistance rate was 17.9% for amoxicillin, 31.9% for clarithromycin, 40.9% for levofloxacin, 24.7% for metronidazole, and 11.5% for tetracycline.
Conclusions
This comprehensive analysis defined regional antibiotic resistance patterns and established Korea-specific ECOFFs, providing a foundation for determining clinical breakpoints and optimizing H. pylori eradication strategies.

Journal of Movement Disorders 2026;19(1):76-80
Objective:
Cognitive impairment is common in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD), and few pharmacological options are available for treating this condition. We evaluated the effects of a digital cognitive training program (SUPERBRAIN), which was previously shown to be effective in populations at risk of Alzheimer’s disease, on cognitive function in individuals with PD.
Methods:
Twenty-three individuals with PD and mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) from four clinics were randomized to the intervention (n=16) or control (n=7) groups. The intervention group completed a 12-week, home-based, tablet-based cognitive training program (25–30 min/day, 7 days/week). Cognitive outcomes were assessed using the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery pre- and post-intervention.
Results:
The adherence rate was 79.36%. The intervention group showed significant improvements in the Seoul Verbal Learning Test (SVLT) delayed recall and the Controlled Oral Word Association Test, while no changes were observed in the control group. Analysis of covariance confirmed greater SVLT improvement in the intervention group (F statistic=7.15, p=0.015, partial η2=0.28).
Conclusion
SUPERBRAIN is feasible and can improve cognitive function in individuals with PD-MCI.

Journal of Yeungnam Medical Science 2025;42(1):18-
Background:
Complete revascularization has demonstrated better outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and multivessel disease. However, in the case of left main (LM) culprit lesion AMI with multivessel disease, there is limited evidence to suggest that complete revascularization is better.
Methods:
We reviewed 16,831 patients in the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry who were treated from July 2016 to June 2020, and 399 patients were enrolled with LM culprit lesion AMI treated with percutaneous coronary intervention. We categorized the patients as those treated with complete revascularization (n=295) or incomplete revascularization (n=104). The study endpoint was major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), a composite of all-cause death, myocardial infarction, ischemia-driven revascularization, stent thrombosis, and stroke. We performed propensity score matching (PSM) and analyzed the incidence of MACCE at 1 year.
Results:
After PSM, the two groups were well balanced. There was no significant difference between the two groups in MACCE at 1 year (12.1% vs. 15.2%; hazard ratio, 1.28; 95% confidence interval, 0.60–2.74; p=0.524) after PSM. The components of MACCE and major bleeding were also not significantly different.
Conclusion
There was no significant difference in clinical outcomes between the groups treated with complete or incomplete revascularization for LM culprit lesion AMI with multivessel disease.

Korean Circulation Journal 2025;55(3):185-195
Background and Objectives:
Outcomes of deferring percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) without invasive physiologic assessment for intermediate coronary lesions is uncertain. We sought to compare long-term outcomes between medical treatment and PCI of intermediate lesions without invasive physiologic assessment.
Methods:
A total of 899 patients with intermediate coronary lesions between 50% and 70% diameter-stenosis were randomized to the conservative group (n=449) or the aggressive group (n=450). For intermediate lesions, PCI was performed in the aggressive group, but was deferred in the conservative group. The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiac events (MACE, a composite of all-cause death, myocardial infarction [MI], or ischemia-driven any revascularization) at 3 years.
Results:
The number of treated lesions per patient was 0.8±0.9 in the conservative group and 1.7±0.9 in the aggressive group (p=0.001). At 3 years, the conservative group had a significantly higher incidence of MACE than the aggressive group (13.8% vs. 9.3%; hazard ratio [HR], 1.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.00–2.21; p=0.049), mainly driven by revascularization of target intermediate lesion (6.5% vs. 1.1%; HR, 5.69; 95% CI, 2.20–14.73;p<0.001). Between 1 and 3 years after the index procedure, compared to the aggressive group, the conservative group had significantly higher incidence of cardiac death or MI (3.2% vs.0.7%; HR, 4.34; 95% CI, 1.24–15.22; p=0.022) and ischemia-driven any revascularization.
Conclusions
For intermediate lesions, medical therapy alone, guided only by angiography, was associated with a higher risk of MACE at 3 years compared with performing PCI, mainly due to increased revascularization.

Korean Circulation Journal 2025;55(3):231-247
Background and Objectives:
Heart failure is a potentially fatal event caused by diverse cardiovascular diseases, leading to high morbidity and mortality. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors positively influence cardiac hypertrophy, fibrosis, hypertension, myocardial infarction, and heart failure, causing some side effects. We aimed to investigate the effect of the novel HDAC inhibitor YAK577 on the heart failure mouse model and its underlying mechanism.
Methods:
New hydroxamic acid YAK577 was prepared via methyl-2,3-diphenylpropanoate synthesis using carboxylic acids. We used a micro-osmotic pump, including isoproterenol (ISO; 80 mg/kg/day), to induce a heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Cardiac hypertrophy was assessed by heart weight to body weight ratio and cross-sectional area. The left ventricular (LV) function was assessed by echocardiography. Fibrosis was evaluated using picrosirius red staining. Overexpression and knockdown experiments were performed to investigate the association between HDAC8 and matrix metalloproteinase 12 (MMP12).
Results:
YAK577 treatment restored ISO-induced reduction in LV fractional shortening and ejection fraction (n=9–11). YAK577 significantly downregulated cardiac hypertrophy marker genes (natriuretic peptide B, NPPB, and myosin heavy chain 7, MYH7) and cardiomyocyte size in vitro but not in vivo. YAK577 ameliorated cardiac fibrosis and fibrosis-related genes in vivo and in vitro. Additionally, YAK577 reduced elevated HDAC8 and MMP12 mRNA and protein expressions in ISO-infused mice, H9c2 cells, and rat neonatal cardiomyocytes.HDAC8 overexpression stimulated MMP12 and NPPB mRNA levels, while HDAC8 knockdown downregulated these genes.
Conclusions
YAK577 acts as a novel heart failure drug through the HDAC8/MMP12 pathway.
