Background:
Dry eye disease (DED) cannot be diagnosed by a single test because it is a multifactorial disorder of the ocular surface. Although studies on various dry eye tests (DETs) in dogs have been reported, standard criteria have not been established except for the Schirmer tear test 1 (STT-1).
Objectives:
To establish reference values for DETs in dogs with normal STT-1 values (≥ 15 mm/min) and to analyze the correlation between DETs.
Methods:
The STT-1 was performed in 10 healthy Beagle dogs (20 eyes). After 20 min, interferometry (IF) for estimating the lipid layer thickness (LLT) of the tear film, tear meniscus height (TMH), non-invasive tear breakup time (NIBUT), and meibomian gland loss rate of the upper eyelid (MGLRU) and lower eyelid (MGLRL), were measured using an ocular surface analyzer.
Results:
Mean values for STT-1, TMH, and NIBUT were as follows: 21.7 ± 3.4 mm/min, 0.41 ± 0.21 mm, and 19.1 ± 9.5 sec, respectively. The most frequent LLT range, measured by IF, was 30–80 nm (11 eyes), followed by 80 nm (5 eyes) and 80–140 nm (4 eyes). MGLRU ≤ 25% was measured in 11 eyes and 26%–50% in 9 eyes; MGLRL ≤ 25% in 8 eyes and 26%–50% in 12 eyes. Besides positive correlation between TMH and NIBUT (P = 0.038), there were no significant associations between DETs.
Conclusions
Data obtained in this study provided normative references that could be useful for diagnosing DED and for further research into correlation between DETs in dogs with DED.

Purpose:
This study compared maternal age at childbirth, the number of live births, and the weight of live births between Korean women and immigrant women using statistical data from the Republic of Korea for 2018.
Methods:
The analysis was conducted using data from the Microdata Integrated Service of Statistics Korea (https://mdis.kostat.go.kr/index.do).
Results:
Korean women and immigrant women showed a higher age at childbirth in 2018 than in 2008. The percentage of newborns of Korean women with a birth weight of less than 2.5 kg increased slightly for 3 consecutive years from 2016 to 2018, whereas for immigrant women, this percentage increased in 2017 compared to 2016 and then decreased again in 2018. Very low birth weight (less than 1.5 kg) became more common among immigrant women from 2016 to 2018. Birth at a gestational age of fewer than 37 weeks increased both among Korean and immigrant women from 2016 to 2018. In both groups, the percentage of women who had their first child within their first 2 years of marriage decreased from 2008 to 2018.
Conclusion
Immigrant women had higher birth rates than Korean women, while both groups showed an increasing trend in premature birth. Greater attention should be paid to the pregnancy and birth needs of immigrant women, and steps are needed to ensure health equity and access in order to prevent premature births. It is also necessary to identify factors that affect preterm birth and birth of very low birth weight infants among immigrant women in the future.

Right ventricular (RV) infarction is a well-recognized complication of acute inferior myocardial infarction. Rightto-Left shunt through a patent foramen ovale (PFO) is an unusual complication of acute RV myocardial infarction that can result in the development of severe hypoxemia. However, the diagnosis may not be easy without high index of suspicion and echocardiography combined with an echocardiographic contrast (agitated saline) is useful diagnostic imaging modality in this regard. We report a case of acute inferior myocardial infarction and RV infarction associated with unexplained hypoxemia. Contrast echocardiography detected a significant right to left shunt through patent foramen ovale, which considered as a cause of hypoxemia in this patient.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Candesartan cilexetil (Atacand ), a selective type I angiotensin II receptor blocker, has recently been introduced as a new antihypertensive agent. We evaluated its anti-hypertensive effect and safety in mild to moderate hypertensive patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Candesartan cilexetil, 8 mg or 16 mg, was administered once a day over 8 weeks period in the patients with mild to moderate hypertension (25 male, 26 female, mean age: 53.5+/-1.2 years). For safety evaluation, laboratory tests were performed before and after treatment with candesartan cilexetil. Changes in blood pressure, heart rate and electrocardiogram were also observed. RESULTS: 1) The mean blood pressures in the sitting position were systolic 164.1+/-2.1 mmHg and diastolic 106.3+/-0.8 mmHg before treatment, which were lowered to 135.4+/-2.0 mmHg and 89.1+/-1.1 mmHg, repectively after 8 weeks of treatment (p<0.05). 2) Candesartan cilexetil had a significant dose-dependent antihypertensive effect for diastolic pressure in 35 patients (8 mg: 97.8+/-0.9 mmHg, 16 mg: 91.3+/-1.1 mmHg, p<0.05). 3) Heart rate was not significantly changed before and after treatment during the treatment with candesartan cilexetil (72.2+/-1.2/min vs. 72.0+/-1.3/min: p>0.05). 4) Laboratory tests revealed no significant abnormality by the treatment with candesartan cilexetil. 5) Left ventricular hypertrophy by ECG criteria detected in 3 cases disappeared after treatment with candesartan cilexetil. 6) No significant side effects were observed during the treatment period. CONCLUSION: Candesartan cilexetil, 8 mg or 16 mg, once a day is an effective and well tolerated antihypertensive treatment. It has a significant dose-dependent antihypertensive effect.

Yonsei Medical Journal 1999;40(3):273-282
The external elastic lamina (EEL) serves as a barrier for cells and macromolecules between the media and adventitia in the vascular wall. We evaluated the morphological changes and quantitative assessments of the EEL architecture in the coronary circulation of pigs fed with a high cholesterol diet. Confocal microscopy analysis of the EEL from hypercholesterolemic coronary arteries revealed an altered pattern characterized by fragmentation and disorganization of the EEL associated with an increase in the thickness. Computerized digital analysis of the images obtained by confocal scanning microscopy demonstrated that compared to normal coronary arteries, the EEL of hypercholesterolemic coronary arteries decreased in the percentage of their elastin content (30.80 +/- 1.64% vs. 47.85 +/- 1.82%, p = 0.001). The percentage of elastin content was negatively correlated with the vessel wall area (r = -0.82, p = 0.001). The immunoreactivity for matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) increased in cholesterol-fed coronary arteries, predominantly in the neointima and adventitia. This study demonstrates that experimental hypercholesterolemia induced ultrastructural changes of the EEL in coronary circulation. The EEL may also be an atherosclerosis-prone area compared with the intima. The EEL may play an important role in the development of structural changes which characterizes the early phase of coronary atherosclerosis and vascular remodeling.
