Background: and Purpose The National Brain Biobank of Korea (NBBK) is a brain bank consortium supported by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and the Korea National Institute of Health, and was launched in 2015 to support research into neurodegenerative disease dementia (NDD). This study aimed to introduce the NBBK and describes clinicopathological correlations based on analyses of data collected from the NBBK. Methods: Four hospital-based brain banks have been established in South Korea: Samsung Medical Center Brain Bank (SMCBB), Seoul National University Hospital Brain Bank (SNUHBB), Pusan National University Hospital Brain Bank (PNUHBB), and Myongji Hospital Brain Bank (MJHBB). Clinical and pathological data were collected from these brain banks using standardized protocols. The prevalence rates of clinical and pathological diagnoses were analyzed in order to characterize the clinicopathological correlations. Results: Between August 2016 and December 2023, 185 brain specimens were collected and pathologically evaluated (SNUHBB: 117; PNUHBB: 27; SMCBB: 34; MJHBB: 7). The age at consent was 70.8±12.6 years, and the age at autopsy was 71.7±12.4 years. The four-most-common clinical diagnoses were Alzheimer’s disease (AD) dementia (20.0%), idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (15.1%), unspecified dementia (11.9%), and cognitively unimpaired (CU) (11.4%).Most cases of unspecified dementia had a pathological diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) vasculopathy (31.8%) or AD (31.8%). Remarkably, only 14.2% of CU cases had normal pathological findings. The three-most-common pathological diagnoses were AD (26.5%), CNS vasculopathy (14.1%), and Lewy body disease (13.5%). Conclusions These clinical and neuropathological findings provide a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying NDD in South Korea.

Background: Skin rejuvenation has become an increasingly popular noninvasive approach to address age-related changes such as sagging, wrinkles, and skin laxity. Energy-based devices (EBDs) and injectables are widely used, but their application requires careful customization based on individual patient characteristics to optimize outcomes and minimize potential adverse effects. Objective: This study aimed to explore clinical practice patterns among board-certified dermatologists in South Korea, focusing on their strategies for tailoring skin rejuvenation treatments to individual patients, including the integration of EBDs, injectables, and senotherapeutics. Methods: A structured survey comprising 10 questions was administered to 13 experienced dermatologists specializing in skin rejuvenation. The survey covered treatment strategies for patients with varying facial fat volumes, pain management approaches, and the use of EBDs, injectables and senotherapeutics. Results: High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and radiofrequency (RF) were the most employed EBDs, often combined with injectables for enhanced outcomes. For patients with higher facial fat, HIFU and deoxycholic acid injections were preferred for contouring and tightening. For those with lower facial fat, biostimulatory agents such as poly-D, L-lactic acid and microneedle RF were favored to restore volume and elasticity. Pain management strategies included topical anesthetics and stepwise protocols. Although less commonly used, senotherapeutics were occasionally prescribed for specific conditions, such as melasma and extensive photoaging. Conclusion Dermatologists in South Korea employ a variety of patient-specific strategies for skin rejuvenation, combining various EBDs, injectables, and senotherapeutics. These findings highlight the importance of personalized treatment protocols and the need for further research to optimize treatment efficacy and safety.

The use of a conical double crown removable partial denture to establish proper horizontal and vertical interocclusal relationships, it can establish a stable occlusal plane and occlusal contacts providing a sufficient restorative space and a favorable functional and aesthetic outcome. In this case, a patient with an anteriorposterior crossed occlusion with mandibular prognathism and no occluding teeth in habitual centric position was treated with a conical double crown removable partial denture. After diagnostic cast analysis and digital diagnosis, provisional prosthesis templates were fabricated. It was possible to intuitive and appropriate vertical dimension determination and esthetic evaluation were performed. Definitive prosthesis with proper function and aesthetics can be fabricated by the digital and conventional treatment process.

Mesenchymal stem cells in the dental tissue indicate a disposition for differentiation into diverse dental lineages and contain enormous potential as the important means for regenerative medicine in dentistry. Among various dental tissues, the dental pulp contains stem cells, progenitor cells and odontoblasts for maintaining dentin homeostasis. The conventional culture of stem cells holds a limit as the living tissue constitutes the three-dimensional (3D) structure. Recent development in the organoid cultures have successfully recapitulated 3D structure and advanced to the assembling of different types. In the current study, the protocol for 3D explant culture of the human dental pulp tissue has been established by adopting the organoid culture. After isolating dental pulp from human tooth, the intact tissue was placed between two layers for Matrigel with addition of the culture medium. The reticular outgrowth of pre-odontoblast layer continued for a month and the random accumulation of dentin was observed near the end. Electron microscopy showed the cellular organization and in situ development of dentin, and immunohistochemistry exhibited the expression of odontoblast and stem cell markers in the outgrowth area. Three-dimensional explant culture of human dental pulp will provide a novel platform for understanding stem cell biology inside the tooth and developing the regenerative medicine.

Background: We aimed to evaluate whether non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with or without sarcopenia is associated with progression of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: We investigated 852 T2DM patients who underwent abdominal ultrasonography, bioelectrical impedance analysis, and carotid artery ultrasonography at baseline and repeated carotid ultrasonography after 6 to 8 years. NAFLD was confirmed by abdominal ultrasonography, and sarcopenia was defined as a sex-specific skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) value <2 standard deviations below the mean for healthy young adults. SMI was calculated by dividing the sum of appendicular skeletal mass by body weight. We investigated the association between NAFLD with or without sarcopenia and the progression of carotid atherosclerosis. Results: Of the 852 patients, 333 (39.1%) were classified as NAFLD without sarcopenia, 66 (7.7%) were classified as sarcopenia without NAFLD, and 123 (14.4%) had NAFLD with sarcopenia at baseline. After 6 to 8 years, patients with both NAFLD and sarcopenia had a higher risk of atherosclerosis progression (adjusted odds ratio, 2.20; P<0.009) than controls without NAFLD and sarcopenia. When a subgroup analysis was performed on only patients with NAFLD, female sex, absence of central obesity, and non-obesity were significant factors related to increased risk of plaque progression risk in sarcopenic patients. Conclusion NAFLD with sarcopenia was significantly associated with the progression of carotid atherosclerosis in T2DM patients.

A retained surgical drain in the operation site is a rare complication that may cause clinical problems and result in medical disputes.The discovery of a retained drain is most often reported after abdominal and pelvis surgery but drain migration in the prevertebral space after anterior cervical spine surgery has not been reported. This paper reports a case of drain retained and migrated into the thorax level following anterior cervical spine surgery with a review of the relevant literature.
