This study validated the Korean version of Stamm’s (2002) professional quality of life scale 5 (ProQOL 5), which includes the positive and negative experiences gained from job experiences by care professionals whose work involves caring for or assisting others. This study focused on clinical veterinarians who perform care tasks for companion animal patients while engaging in the veterinarian-client-patient relationship. Through a forward-backward translation process, the scale was adapted and translated, and data from 297 participants were analyzed. The correlations between the individual items and the total score of the preliminary Korean version of the quality-of-life scale for clinical veterinarians were analyzed, and confirmatory factor analysis was conducted. The scale retained its original structure, with 3 interrelated factors. In addition, convergent and discriminant validity was verified for the subscales of the quality-of-life measure, including job satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. Finally, the implications, practical applications, and limitations of the validation study of the Korean version of the professional quality of life scale for clinical veterinarians (K-ProQOL 5-V) were assessed.

Purpose: Although retear after rotator cuff repair is relatively common, controversy remains regarding the differences in clinical outcomes between the intact and retear groups. In particular, there is a lack of research comparing the muscle strength between the two groups after rotator cuff repair. Materials and Methods: Among patients who underwent arthroscopic repair of full-thickness rotator cuff tears, the repair integrity was assessed using magnetic resonance imaging at 3 months postoperatively. The clinical outcomes were assessed by evaluating the Korean Shoulder Scoring System (KSS) score, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) shoulder score, and muscular strength of a rotator cuff measured by a dynamometer preoperatively and postoperatively at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and at the final follow-up at least 2 years after surgery. Results: Three hundred and seventy-three patients were included, and retear occurred in 14.2%. Both the intact (320 patients) and retear groups (53 patients) showed significant improvement in KSS (all, p<0.001) and UCLA scores (all, p<0.001) at the final follow-up compared to the preoperative values. On the other hand, the clinical scores of the intact group were significantly higher than those of the retear group from 6 months after surgery, except for several domains. In the intact group at the final follow-up, significant muscle strength improvements were confirmed in forward elevation (FE), external rotation (ER) and internal rotation (IR) compared to those before surgery (all, p<0.001).In the retear group, however, muscle strength was improved in FE (p=0.091) and IR (p=0.135), but the improvement was not statistically significant, and the muscle strength was decreased in ER (p=0.507). Conclusion The clinical outcomes improved in the intact and retear groups after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, but the intact group showed significantly higher improvement than the retear group. The muscle strength improved significantly only in the intact group, and muscle strength decreased in ER in the retear group. Maintaining the integrity of the rotator cuff after surgery may be beneficial for improving clinical outcomes and muscle strength.

This study investigated the clinical characteristics and kidney outcomes of childhood-onset lupus nephritis (LN), and risk factors associated with prognosis. Methods: We enrolled 216 patients with histologically diagnosed LN during childhood. The Korean Society of Pediatric Nephrology organized a retrospective cohort study of childhood-onset LN in 13 major pediatric nephrology centers in South Korea. Results: The mean age at kidney biopsy was 13.2 ± 3.22 years. The main forms of presentation were nephrotic syndrome and/or hematuria in 152 patients (70.4%), and the most common histological finding was World Health Organization (WHO) class IV in 138 patients (63.9%), followed by WHO class III in 34 patients (15.7%). In the outcome analysis, the mean follow-up period of the patients was 7.8 ± 5.11 years. At last follow-up, 32 patients (14.8%) developed advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD). Male sex and failure to achieve remission at 12 months of treatment were significant risk factors for developing advanced CKD (hazard ratio of 2.57 and 2.29, respectively). Conclusion: Our study demonstrated the clinical characteristics and long-term outcomes of patients with childhood-onset LN. Male sex and failure to achieve remission in the first year of treatment were predictive of advanced CKD. Therefore, prompt awareness and close monitoring of these high-risk patients are needed, which may further improve the prognosis of children with LN.

The global burden of mental illness has increased significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic. In South Korea, despite this rising burden, the utilization of mental health services remains critically low compared to other countries. This study evaluated successful integrated treatment centers from various countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, to identify the best practices that can be applied to South Korean society. These international examples informed the development of Mind the SHIM (SNUH Health in Mind) center, an integrated treatment model designed to address the gaps in non-pharmacological mental health services in South Korea. Mind the SHIM center focuses on developing and validating programs tailored to local needs, emphasizing professional education, systematic program delivery, and community collaboration. The biopsychosocial approach of the center is expected to enhance the overall quality of life of the patients and increase the utilization of mental health services, reducing the broader economic and social burden of mental illness in South Korea.

Background and Objectives: Ultimaster™, a third-generation sirolimus-eluting stent using biodegradable polymer, has been introduced to overcome long term adverse vascular events, such as restenosis or stent thrombosis. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the 12-month clinical outcomes of Ultimaster™ stents in Korean patients with coronary artery disease. Methods: This study is a multicenter, prospective, observational registry across 12 hospitals. To reflect real-world clinical evidence, non-selective subtypes of patients and lesions were included in this study. The study end point was target lesion failure (TLF) (the composite of cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction [MI], and target lesion revascularization [TLR]) at 12-month clinical follow up. Results: A total of 576 patients were enrolled between November 2016 and May 2021. Most of the patients were male (76.5%), with a mean age of 66.0±11.2 years. Among the included patients, 40.1% had diabetes mellitus (DM) and 67.9% had acute coronary syndrome (ACS).At 12 months, the incidence of TLF was 4.1%. The incidence of cardiac death was 1.5%, MI was 1.0%, TLR was 2.7%, and stent thrombosis was 0.6%. In subgroup analysis based on the presence of ACS, DM, hypertension, dyslipidemia, or bifurcation, there were no major differences in the incidence of the primary endpoint. Conclusions The present registry shows that Ultimaster™ stent is safe and effective for routine real-world clinical practice in non-selective Korean patients, having a low rate of adverse events at least up to 12 months.

Purpose: Lower-grade gliomas of histologic grades 2 and 3 follow heterogenous clinical outcomes, which necessitates risk stratification. This study aimed to evaluate whether diffusion-weighted and perfusion-weighted MRI radiomics allow overall survival (OS) prediction in patients with lower-grade gliomas and investigate its prognostic value. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, radiomic features were extracted from apparent diffusion coefficient, relative cerebral blood volume map, and Ktrans map in patients with pathologically confirmed lower-grade gliomas (January 2012–February 2019). The radiomics risk score (RRS) calculated from selected features constituted a radiomics model. Multivariable Cox regression analysis, including clinical features and RRS, was performed. The models’ integrated area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (iAUCs) were compared. The radiomics model combined with clinical features was presented as a nomogram. Results: The study included 129 patients (median age, 44 years; interquartile range, 37–57 years; 63 female): 90 patients for training set and 39 patients for test set. The RRS was an independent risk factor for OS with a hazard ratio of 6.01. The combined clinical and radiomics model achieved superior performance for OS prediction compared to the clinical model in both training (iAUC, 0.82 vs.0.72, p=0.002) and test sets (0.88 vs. 0.76, p=0.04). The radiomics nomogram combined with clinical features exhibited good agreement between the actual and predicted OS with C-index of 0.83 and 0.87 in the training and test sets, respectively. Conclusion Adding diffusion- and perfusion-weighted MRI radiomics to clinical features improved survival prediction in lowergrade glioma.

Rare endocrine diseases are complex conditions that require lifelong specialized care due to their chronic nature and associated long-term complications. In Korea, a lack of nationwide data on clinical practice and outcomes has limited progress in patient care. Therefore, the Multicenter Networks for Ideal Outcomes of Pediatric Rare Endocrine and Metabolic Disease (OUTSPREAD) study was initiated. This study involves 30 centers across Korea. The study aims to improve the long-term prognosis of Korean patients with rare endocrine diseases by collecting comprehensive clinical data, biospecimens, and patient-reported outcomes to identify complications and unmet needs in patient care. Patients with childhood-onset pituitary, adrenal, or gonadal disorders, such as craniopharyngioma, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), and Turner syndrome were prioritized. The planned enrollment is 1,300 patients during the first study phase (2022–2024). Clinical, biochemical, and imaging data from diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up during 1980–2023 were retrospectively reviewed. For patients who agreed to participate in the prospective cohort, clinical data and biospecimens will be prospectively collected to discover ideal biomarkers that predict the effectiveness of disease control measures and prognosis. Patient-reported outcomes, including quality of life and depression scales, will be evaluated to assess psychosocial outcomes. Additionally, a substudy on CAH patients will develop a steroid hormone profiling method using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to improve diagnosis and monitoring of treatment outcomes. This study will address unmet clinical needs by discovering ideal biomarkers, introducing evidence-based treatment guidelines, and ultimately improving long-term outcomes in the areas of rare endocrine and metabolic diseases.
