Purpose: This study explored current pediatric palliative care (PPC) in South Korea and suggests future directions based on the perspectives of full-time PPC workers. Methods: A mixed-methods secondary analysis was conducted using survey data from nurses and social workers involved in a government PPC project. The survey assessed services provided by hospitals, nurses, and social workers, and gathered perceptions of challenging tasks, evidence needs, the significance of PPC, and future expectations through open-ended questions. Data were analyzed using frequency and conventional content analyses. Results: Eighteen full-time workers from nine of the ten project hospitals participated. Eight hospitals provided pain and symptom management and all offered counseling and education for patients and parents. Only one provided respite care and legacy-making services. Bereavement care was offered in all hospitals primarily through individual counseling and there were also three self-help groups. Nurses have diverse roles including in practice, education, leadership, research, and consultation. Social workers address psychosocial and economic challenges, rehabilitation and social reintegration. The workers highlighted the challenges in end-of-life care and communication, stressing the need for protocols and further training.PPC was seen as meaningful by patients and families, as well as staff. Conclusion Despite significant progress in PPC in South Korea, quantitative capacity remains limited. Further qualitative improvements in policies, practices, human resource development, and healthcare training are essential. This study provides insights into current PPC practices and their limitations. The development of practical evidence to enhance employment stability warrants further investigation.

Purpose: This study investigated patient safety management activities among general hospital nurses and aimed to identify the factors influencing patient safety management activities. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design included 159 ward nurses working at two tertiary hospitals located in Busan city. Data were collected with self-reported questionnaires from April 8 to April 20, 2024 and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression in SPSS 29.0. Results: Factors significantly influencing patient safety management activities in nurses were perceptions of patient safety culture (β = .47, p < .001) and perceptions of patient rounding (β = .31, p < .001). The explanatory power of these variables was 43%. Conclusion This study found that perceptions of patient safety culture and perceptions of patient rounding had significant effects on nurses’ patient safety management activities. Thus, it is necessary to promote patient safety management activities among nurses through the development of intervention programs to improve perceptions of patient safety culture and perceptions of patient rounding.

Temporal and subcellular distributions of hyaluronic acid (HA) as a degradable nanoparticle (NP) in animals were investigated to determine if HA-NP could be utilized as an appropriate drug delivery system. After mice were intravenously injected with 5 mg/kg of Cy5.5-labeled HA-NP sized 350–400 nm or larger HA-polymers, the fluorescence intensity was measured in all homogenized organs from 0.5 h to 28 days. HA-NP was greatly detected in spleen, liver and kidney until day 28, while it was maintained at low levels in other organs. HA-polymer was observed at low levels in all organs. HA-NP quantities in spleen and liver were reduced until day 3, but increased sharply between days 3 and 7, then decreased again, while their HA-polymers were maintained at low levels until day 28. In kidneys, both HA-NP and HA-polymer showed high levels after 0.5 h of administration, but steadily decreased until day 28. According to ultrastructural analyses, HA-NP was engulfed in Kupffer cells of liver and macrophages of spleen and kidney at day 1 and was accumulated in the cytoplasm of kidney tubular cells at day 7. Overall, these findings suggest that HA-NP could be considered a desirable drug carrier in the liver, kidney, or spleen.

Neural tissue is arisen from presumptive ectoderm via inhibition of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling during Xenopus early development. Previous studies demonstrate that ectopic expression of dominant negative BMP4 receptor (DNBR) produces neural tissue in animal cap explants (AC) and also increases the expression level of various genes involved in neurogenesis. To investigate detail mechanism of neurogenesis in transcriptional level, we analyzed RNAs increased by DNBR using total RNA sequencing analysis and identified several candidate genes. Among them, xCITED2 (Xenopus CBP/p300-interacting transcription activator) was induced 4.6 fold by DNBR and preferentially expressed in neural tissues at tadpole stage. Ectopic expression of xCITED2 induced anterior neural genes without mesoderm induction and reduced BMP downstream genes, an eye specific marker and posterior neural marker. Taken together, these results suggest that xCITED2 may have a role in the differentiation of anterior neural tissue during Xenopus early development.

Neurogenesis is the process that develops neuroectoderm from ectoderm. Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) inhibition in ectodermal cells is necessary and sufficient for neurogenesis in Xenopus embryos. To isolate genes involved in early neurogenesis, Xenous Affymetrix gene chips representing 14,400 genes were analyzed in early stage of neuroectodermal cells that were produced by inhibition of BMP signaling with overexpression of a dominant-negative receptor. We identified 265 candidate genes including 107 ESTs which were newly expressed during the early neurogenesis by blocking BMP signaling. The candidates of 10 ESTs were selected and examined for upregulation in neuroectoderm. Five EST genes were confirmed to be upregulated in neuroectoderm and examined for time-dependent expression patterns in intact embryos. Two EST genes were cloned and identified as a homology of CYP26c (Xl.1946.1.A1_at) and Kielin containing VWC domain (Xl.15853.1.A1_at). One of them, CYP26c, was further characterized for its transcriptional regulation and role of anterior-posterior patterning during neurogenesis. Taken together, we analyzed and characterized genes expressed in early neurogenesis. The results suggest that neurogenesis by inhibition of BMP provides useful system to isolate genes involved in early events of neurogenesis during early vertebrate embryogenesis.
