1.Development and usability evaluation of a web-based healthy eating practice questionnaire for Korean preschool children: a child–parent dyad approach

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
The illustrated Healthy Eating Practice Questionnaire (HEPQ) was previously developed to assess food preferences, eating behaviors, hand/oral hygiene practices, and nutrition knowledge among Korean preschool children. Nevertheless, the lack of an integrated scoring system has limited its interpretability. This study developed a scoring system and a web-based platform with tailored feedback using a child-parent dyad approach.
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
The development process consisted of 5 phases: 1) questionnaire preparation for online use, 2) formulation of the scoring system, 3) determination of the cut-off values for three levels of healthy eating practices based on a child-parent survey, 4) technical development of the online platform, and 5) usability evaluation. A scoring system was established by standardizing the domain scores to a 100-point scale. One hundred child– parent pairs participated in the survey to calculate the Healthy Eating Practice Score (HEPS) and determine cut-off values for the HEPS levels. The validity of the cut-off values was examined by a comparison with the Nutrition Quotient for Preschoolers (NQ-P). A web-based platform was developed, and 47 child–parent pairs were used to assess its usability.
RESULTS:
Significant positive correlations were observed between child and parent HEPS across all domains. The HEPS-based classification showed good discriminative ability because higher HEPS levels were consistently associated with higher NQ-P scores in children and parents. The web-based HEPQ was easy to use and understand, and almost all participants (97.9% of children and 93.6% of parents) reported no difficulties using the platform.
CONCLUSION
The web-based HEPQ platform with an integrated scoring system provides a valid, user-friendly tool for assessing and interpreting healthy eating practices in preschool children. This platform supports parental engagement in children’s healthy eating practices and provides a practical tool for evaluating the effectiveness of nutrition education in early childcare settings.
2.Development and validation of an illustrated questionnaire on healthy eating practices among Korean preschool children

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
An illustrated questionnaire, the Healthy Eating Practice Questionnaire (HEPQ), was developed and validated to assess healthy eating practices among Korean preschool children.
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
The development process consisted of 4 phases: (1) item generation based on a literature review and focus group interviews, (2) item refinement through expert consultation, (3) illustration design, and (4) validation. One hundred and eighty-seven child–parent pairs and 24 teachers participated in the validation study. The reliability was examined using test–retest analysis, and the validity was assessed by comparing the children’s self-reports with those of their parents and teachers. The level of agreement was determined using the percentage agreement, kappa statistics, and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC).
RESULTS:
The final 30-item questionnaire consisted of 4 domains: food preferences, eating behaviors, hand/oral hygiene practices, and nutrition knowledge. Most items showed a percentage agreement above 60% and kappa coefficients exceeding 0.5 in test–retest analysis, indicating acceptable consistency. The child–caregiver agreement was moderate to substantial, with kappa values generally above 0.4. The domain-level ICCs indicated good reliability (ICC = 0.49–0.83) and validity (ICC = 0.33–0.77) across all domains and subgroups.The comparisons by age showed that 4-yr-olds provided valid and reliable responses comparable to 5-yr-olds. The parents and teachers confirmed that the illustrated format was easy for the children to understand and complete independently.
CONCLUSION
The HEPQ showed satisfactory reliability and validity for assessing healthy eating practices among preschool children. The illustrated format enhances comprehension and engagement, supporting its applicability for research and nutrition education in daycare settings.
3.Translation Initiation Factor-2S2 (eIF2S2) Contributes to Cervical Carcinogenesis by Inhibiting the TGF-β/SMAD4 Signaling Pathway

The deregulation of protein translational machinery and the oncogenic role of several translation initiation factors have been extensively investigated. This study aimed to investigate the role of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2S2 (eIF2S2, also known as eIF2β) in cervical carcinogenesis. Immunohistochemical analysis of human cervical carcinoma tissues revealed a stage-specific increase in eIF2S2 expression. The knockdown of eIF2S2 in human cervical cancer (SiHa) cells significantly reduced growth and migration properties, whereas its overexpression demonstrated the opposite effect. Immunoprecipitation and Bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) assay confirmed the previous photo array finding of the interaction between eIF2S2 and SMAD4 to understand the tumorigenic mechanism of eIF2S2. The results indicated that the N-terminus of eIF2S2 interacts with the MH-1 domain of SMAD4. The interaction effect between eIF2S2 and SMAD4 was further evaluated. The knockdown of eIF2S2 increased SMAD4 expression in cervical cancer cells without changing SMAD4 mRNA expression, whereas transient eIF2S2 overexpression reduced SMAD4 expression. This indicates the possibility of post-translational regulation of SMAD4 expression by eIF2S2. Additionally, eIF2S2 overexpression was confirmed to weaken the expression and/or promoter activity of p15 and p27, which are SMAD4-regulated antiproliferative proteins, by reducing SMAD4 levels. Therefore, our study indicated the pro-tumorigenic role of eIF2S2, which diminishes both SMAD4 expression and function as a transcriptional factor in cervical carcinogenesis.

6.Screen time, mealtime media use, and dietary behaviors in Korean preschoolers : a cross-sectional study

Objectives:
Screen time refers to the time spent using screen media, such as televisions, smartphones, computers, or tablets. Excessive exposure to screen media has been reported to negatively impact young children’s health and development, including overweight, short sleep duration, and language delays. This study examined the association of screen time and mealtime media use with dietary behaviors among preschool children.
Methods:
A cross-sectional survey was conducted on parents of children aged three to five years using the online questionnaires of the Nutrition Quotient for Preschoolers (NQ-P) and the Dietary Screening Test (DST). Data from 261 children’s parents were analyzed.
Results:
Of the 261 children, 96.9% used screen media, 55.6% used screen media for two hours or more daily, and 30.7% were exposed to screen media during meals. The NQ-P scores were significantly lower in the children with longer screen time and mealtime media use. Children who used screen media for two hours or more and those exposed to screen media during meals consumed kimchi less frequently and confectionery and sugar-sweetened beverages more frequently than children who used less than two hours and were not exposed to screen media during meals. In addition, they were more likely to be picky about food, refuse to eat, and less likely to feed themselves than children with shorter screen time and no mealtime media use.
Conclusions
This study reported an association between unhealthy dietary behaviors, feeding difficulties, and screen time and mealtime media use among preschool children. Further research should explore effective strategies for reducing children’s screen time.
7.Relation between the Total Diet Quality based on Korean Healthy Eating Index and the Incidence of Metabolic Syndrome Constituents and Metabolic Syndrome among a Prospective Cohort of Korean Adults

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association of the total diet quality with the incidence risk of metabolic syndrome constituents and metabolic syndrome among Korean adults.METHODS: Based on a community-based cohort of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) from 2001 to 2014, data from a total of 5,549 subjects (2,805 men & 2,744 women) aged 40~69 years at the baseline with a total follow-up period of 38,166 person-years were analyzed. The criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel was employed to define metabolic syndrome. The total diet quality was estimated using the Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI). Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for risk of metabolic syndrome constituents and metabolic syndrome in relation to KHEI quintile groups was calculated by multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression model.RESULTS: After adjusting for age, energy intake, income, education, physical activity, smoking, and drinking, the incidence of abdominal obesity and high blood pressure was significantly lower, by approximately 29.7% (P < 0.01) and 25.2% (P < 0.01), respectively, in the fifth KHEI quintile compared to the first quintile in men. A significant decreasing trend of the metabolic syndrome incidence was observed across the improving levels of KHEI (HRq5vs.q1: 0.775, 95% CIq5vs.q1: 0.619~0.971, P for trend < 0.01). In women, the incidence of abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome was significantly lower, by approximately 29.8% (P < 0.01) and 22.5% (P < 0.05), respectively, in the fifth KHEI quintile compared to the first quintile adjusting for multiple covariates. On the other hand, the linear trend of metabolic syndrome risk across the KHEI levels did not reach the significance level.CONCLUSIONS: A better diet quality can prevent future metabolic syndrome and its certain risk factors among Korean men and women.

8.Association between Total Diet Quality and Metabolic Syndrome Incidence Risk in a Prospective Cohort of Korean Adults.

The purpose of this study was to prospectively investigate the relation between total diet quality and metabolic syndrome in Korean adults. A community-based cohort of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES) provided basis for this study. During the total follow-up period of 38,171 person-years of 5,549 subjects, a total of 1,891 metabolic syndrome incident cases were identified. Metabolic syndrome was defined by the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel. Mediterranean Diet Score (MDS), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet, and Recommended Food Score (RFS) were used to assess total diet quality. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for metabolic syndrome associated with total diet quality. In men, the incidence of metabolic syndrome in the 5th MDS quintile group decreased by approximately 25% compared to the 1st quintile group (p for trend < 0.01) after adjusting for age and energy intake. In women, significant decreasing trend of metabolic syndrome incidence risk was observed across the quintiles of RFS in an age and energy intake-adjusted model (HR [95% CI] of Q5 vs. Q1; 0.662 [0.521–0.842], p for trend < 0.01). However, such associations did not reach at a significance level when additional covariates were included. In this first study looking at prospective relation of metabolic syndrome with total diet quality in a Korean population, study findings suggest some protective role of better diet quality in preventing future metabolic syndrome. But no convincing evidence was observed in this study.

9.Effects of an Online Imagery-Based Treatment Program in Patients with Workplace-Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: We developed easily accessible imagery-based treatment program for patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to workplace accidents and investigated the effects of the program on various PTSD related symptoms. METHODS: The program was based on an online platform and consisted of eight 15-min sessions that included script-guided imagery and supportive music. Thirty-five patients with workplace-related PTSD participated in this program 4 days per week for 4 weeks. Its effects were examined using self-report questionnaires before and after the take-home online treatment sessions. RESULTS: After completing the 4-week treatment program, patients showed significant improvements in depressed mood (t=3.642, p=0.001) based on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), anxiety (t=3.198, p=0.003) based on the Generalized Anxiety Disorder seven-item (GAD-7) scale, and PTSD symptoms (t=5.363, p < 0.001) based on the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Check List (PCL). In particular, patients with adverse childhood experiences exhibited a greater degree of relief related to anxiety and PTSD symptoms than those without adverse childhood experiences. CONCLUSION: The present results demonstrated that the relatively short online imagery-based treatment program developed for this study had beneficial effects for patients with workplace-related PTSD.
