Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological characteristics and diagnostic-therapeutic strategies of oncocytic mucoepidermoid carcinoma (OMEC) of the parotid gland, and to enhance awareness of this rare variant among clinicians and pathologists. Methods: The clinical data, imaging findings, histopathological features, immunophenotype, and molecular characteristics of two patients with parotid OMEC were retrospectively analyzed, and the relevant literature was reviewed. Results: Case 1 was a 50-year-old man who presented with a painless mass behind the right earlobe for more than 2 years. The patient underwent extended parotidectomy with preservation of the facial nerve. Histopathological examination revealed that the tumor was predominantly composed of oncocytic cells with a small proportion of mucous cells. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were partially positive for cytokeratin 5/6, cytokeratin 7, and P63. Special staining with alcian blue, periodic acid-Schiff, and phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin yielded positive results. The diagnosis of right parotid OMEC was established. No recurrence or metastasis was observed during a 1 year follow-up. Case 2 was a 61-year-old man with a 3-month history of a mass beneath the left ear. After partial parotidectomy at an outside institution, pathological consultation at the Stomatological Hospital of Jilin University demonstrated that the tumor consisted almost entirely of oncocytic cells, exhibited infiltrative growth, and lacked typical mucous, epidermoid, and intermediate cells. Fluorescence in situ hybridization confirmed positive mastermind-like transcriptional activator 2 (MAML2) gene rearrangement, establishing the diagnosis of left parotid OMEC. The patient subsequently underwent total parotidectomy with preservation of the facial nerve, and no recurrence was detected during a short-term 3 months follow-up. A review of the literature indicated that OMEC most commonly arises in the parotid gland and is generally a low-grade malignancy with favorable prognosis. When tumors are composed exclusively of oncocytic cells, exhibit minimal cytological atypia, and lack the classical cellular components of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, they are highly prone to misdiagnosis as oncocytoma, nodular oncocytic hyperplasia, or other benign oncocytic lesions. Accurate differential diagnosis relies on recognition of infiltrative growth patterns, supportive immunophenotypic markers (e.g., P63 positivity), and detection of characteristic MAML2 gene rearrangement. Complete surgical excision remains the treatment of choice. Conclusion OMEC dominated by oncocytic cells carries a high risk of clinical misdiagnosis. Objective To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of malaria and provide a basis for developing improved prevention and control measures. Methods Data were obtained from the Chinese Disease Prevention and Control Information System. Malaria surveillance data for Nanning City from January 1,2023, to December 31,2024, were exported from the Infectious Disease Reporting Information Management Subsystem. The characteristics of the two groups of malaria cases were compared. Results A total of 103 imported malaria cases were reported in Nanning City in 2024, representing a 38.32% decrease compared with the same period of the previous year. No statistically significant difference were observed between cases reported in 2023 and 2024 in terms of average age, gender ratio, proportion of parasite species, and monthly reporting distribution;however, statistically significant differences were found in the proportion of reporting areas and current residence areas(χ2= 13.572 and 10.355, respectively; P = 0.001 and 0.035, respectively). The proportion of cases reported in Shanglin County and the proportion of cases residing in Shanglin County were both lower than those during the same period of the previous year. Conclusions The high aggregation of imported malaria cases in Nanning City has decreased. Medical institutions in areas other than Shanglin County should strengthen their vigilance against malaria.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the larvicidal effect of ultrasonic waves against Aedes albopictus larvae at various exposure parameters (distance and time), and to preliminarily investigate the effects of different containers (water volume and depth) and ultrasonic devices on the larvicidal efficacy, so as to provide experimental evidence for the application of ultrasound-based mosquito control technology. MethodsUnder controlled laboratory conditions, two commercially available ultrasonic devices [40 kHz/300 W and (50±5) kHz/70 W] were used to systematically examine the effects of exposure distance (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 cm), exposure duration (1, 3, 6, 15 and 60 min), larval instar(Ⅰ‒Ⅱ and Ⅲ‒Ⅳ）, and container type on the immediate mortality of Aedes albopictus larvae collected from urban areas of Shanghai. Statistical analysis of the mortality rates of larvae among different experimental groups was performed using the chi-square test. ResultsUltrasonic exposure exerted a detectable larvicidal effect against Aedes albopictus larvae of all instars. For early-instar larvae, exposure time significantly affected mortality at all tested distances (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 cm), with χ² values ranging from 25.57 to 32.74 ( all P<0.001). No significant distance effect was observed in the first and second instar larvae after short-term exposure (1 and 3 min; P>0.05). However, a distance-dependent effect emerged from 6 min onward (P<0.05). During short-term exposure (1 min and 3 min) at close range (20 cm and 40 cm), the immediate mortality of the third and fourth instar larvae was higher than that of the first and second instar larvae. Conversely, during prolonged exposure (15 min and 60 min), the first and second instar larvae exhibited significantly higher mortality than that of the third and fourth instar larvae. These results indicated that larval mortality was jointly influenced by exposure duration and distance. Preliminary experiments indicated that larvicidal efficacy in shallow water was lower than that in deep water. No significant difference in larvicidal effect was observed between the two ultrasonic devices with different frequencies and power outputs. ConclusionUnder laboratory conditions, ultrasound can effectively kill Aedes albopictus larvae, and the larvicidal effect is jointly influenced by larval instar, exposure distance, and aquatic environment. Compact ultrasonic devices show potential for field application in biological mosquito control.

BackgroundDepression is a prevalent emotional problem in adolescents， and parental psychological control is an important predictor of adolescent depression. However， existing research on the acting mechanism between the two is not adequate. ObjectiveTo explore the pathway of negative perfectionism and academic stress between parental psychological control and depressive symptoms among secondary school students， so as to provide references for reducing the incidence risk of depression in such population. MethodsFrom February to April 2023， 1 100 students across 2 middle schools and 2 high schools in Zhongshan city were selected as subjects. The survey was conducted adopting Parental Psychological Control Questionnaire， Chinese Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale （CFMPS）， sense of academic stress subscale in Mental Health Inventory of Middle School Student （MMHI-60） and Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale （CES-D）. Spearman correlation analysis was adopted to examine the correlation between scores of all scales above， and Amos 24.0 was used to test the mediating path of negative perfectionism and academic stress between parental psychological control and depressive symptoms among secondary school students. ResultsAmong the 1 009 valid questionnaires withdrew （91.73% of the total）， 261 students were detected to have depressive symptoms （25.87%）. As the results of Spearman correlation analysis showed， the scores of the Parental Psychological Control Questionnaire， score of negative perfectionism dimension in CFMPS， score of sense of academic stress subscale in MMHI-60 and CES-D score were positively correlated with each other （r=0.323~0.644， P<0.05 or 0.01）. The direct effect value of parental psychological control on depressive symptoms in secondary school students was 0.128 （95% CI： 0.061~0.201）， accounting for 31.37% of the total effect. Negative perfectionism and academic stress played independently as intermediatory roles between parental psychological control and depressive symptoms in secondary school students， and the indirect effect values were 0.099 （95% CI： 0.068~0.133） and 0.100 （95% CI： 0.060~0.143）， accounting for 24.27% and 24.51% of the total effect， respectively. Negative perfectionism and academic stress acted combinedly as the chain effect pathway between parental psychological control and depressve symptoms in secondary school students， with the indirect effect value of 0.081 （95% CI： 0.060~0.106） accounting for 19.85% of the total effect. ConclusionParental psychological control can affect the depressive symptoms among secondary school students directly， and through independent or chain paths of negative perfectionism and academic stress indirectly. ［Funded by Zhongshan Social Welfare Technology Research Project （number， 2022B1060）］

BACKGROUND:Multiple studies have confirmed that mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)signaling pathway is involved in cell proliferation,and microRNA(miR)is involved in the occurrence and development of hypertrophic scars.Therefore,the role of miR-27a-3p and MAPK signaling pathways in pathological scar formation has been further explored. OBJECTIVE:To explore the effect of miR-27a-3p on the proliferation of human hypertrophic scar fibroblasts through the MAPK signaling pathway. METHODS:The primary fibroblasts were isolated and collected from the skin samples.The primary fibroblasts were observed by inverted microscope and verified by immunofluorescence.The relative expression level of miR-27a-3p in tissues was detected by qRT-PCR.The target genes of hsa-miR-27a-3p were predicted using the database,and then the predicted target genes were enriched by gene ontology function analysis and biological pathway enrichment analysis of the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes.There were seven groups:blank control,negative control,miR-27a-3p mimic,miR-27a-3p inhibitor,miR-27a-3p mimic+p38 MAPK inhibitor,miR-27a-3p mimic+extracellular regulated protein kinase inhibitor,miR-27a-3p mimic+c-Jun N-terminal kinase inhibitor.Western blot was used to detect the levels of extracellular regulated protein kinase,c-Jun N-terminal kinase inhibitor.and p38 kinase and their phosphorylation levels.Cell counting kit-8 and EdU were used to detect cell proliferation. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Compared with normal skin fibroblasts,hypertrophic scar fibroblasts had stronger proliferative activity(P<0.05)and faster proliferation level(P<0.001).Compared with normal skin,miR-27a-3p was highly expressed in hypertrophic scars(P<0.001).Compared with the negative control group,overexpression of miR-27a-3p could promote cell proliferation activity(P<0.001)and proliferation levels(P<0.001).Compared with the negative control group,knockdown of miR-27a-3p could inhibit the proliferation activity(P<0.05)and proliferation levels(P<0.001).Compared with the negative control group,overexpression of miR-27a-3p promoted the phosphorylated levels of extracellular regulated protein kinase,c-Jun N-terminal kinase,and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(P<0.05).Compared with the negative control group,knockdown of miR-27a-3p inhibited the phosphorylated levels of extracellular regulated protein kinase,c-Jun N-terminal kinase,and p38 MAPK(P<0.05).Compared with the miR-27a-3p mimic group,specific inhibitors of extracellular regulated protein kinase,c-Jun N-terminal kinase,and p38 MAPK reversed the effects of miR-27a-3p on the proliferative activity(P<0.01)and proliferation level(P<0.001)of fibroblasts.To conclude,these results suggest that miR-27a-3p promotes the proliferation of human hypertrophic scar fibroblasts by activating the MAPK signaling pathway.

Objective To compare the long-term survival of elderly patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) treated with surgical versus non-surgical treatment. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of elderly patients aged ≥70 years with ESCC who underwent esophagectomy or radiotherapy/chemotherapy at Sichuan Cancer Hospital from January 2009 to September 2017. Patients were divided into a surgical group (S group) and a non-surgical group (NS group) according to the treatment method. The propensity score matching method was used to match the two groups of patients at a ratio of 1∶1, and the survival of the two groups before and after matching was analyzed. Results A total of 726 elderly patients with ESCC were included, including 552 males and 174 females, with 651 patients aged ≥70-80 years and 75 patients aged ≥80-90 years. There were 515 patients in the S group and 211 patients in the NS group. The median follow-up time was 60.8 months, and the median overall survival of the S group was 41.9 months [95%CI (35.2, 48.5)], while that of the NS group was only 24.0 months [95%CI (19.8, 28.3)]. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival rates of the S group were 84%, 54%, and 40%, respectively, while those of the NS group were 72%, 40%, and 30%, respectively [HR=0.689, 95%CI (0.559, 0.849), P<0.001]. After matching, 138 patients were included in each group, and there was no statistical difference in the overall survival between the two groups [HR=0.871, 95%CI (0.649, 1.167), P=0.352]. Conclusion Compared with conservative treatment, there is no significant difference in the long-term survival of elderly patients aged ≥70 years who undergo esophagectomy for ESCC. Neoadjuvant therapy combined with surgery is still an important choice to potentially improve the survival of elderly patients with ESCC.

Objective To analyze the virus subtypes, molecular evolutional and molecular transmission network features of the first confirmed mpox case in Huai’an City, Jiangsu Province, so as to provide insights into understanding of the transmission and evolution dynamics of mpox virus and formulation of the mpox control strategy in the city. Methods Genomic DNA was extracted from swabs of the first confirmed mpox case’s skin lesions in Huai’an City, and the amplicon sequencing library was constructed using the hypersensitive mpox virus whole-genome capture kit. High-throughput sequencing was performed using the GridION X5 nanopore sequencer on the Nanopore sequencing platform, and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis of mpox virus genome sequences was performed following sequence assembly. In addition, phylogenetic analysis, genetic genealogy and molecular traceability analysis were performed. Results The virus whole genome sequence of the first confirmed mpox case was successfully obtained by high-throughput sequencing, with a full length of 197 182 bp, and was named hMpxV/China/JS-HA01/2023, which belonged to the clade IIb (West African clade) lineage B.1.3. Compared with the mpox virus reference sequence MPXV-M5312_HM12_Rivers-001 (GenBank accession number: NC_063383), the genome sequence of the Huai’an virus isolate carried 86 SNPs, including 40 SNPs in the coding region as non-synonymous mutations and 73 SNPs as nucleotide mutations caused by APOBEC3 (APOBEC3). Of the 97 mpox virus gene sequences, 79 sequences were included in the molecular network (81.44%), and the threshold of the genetic distance accessed to the network was 0.35/10⁵. There were two large molecular transmission clusters and one scattered cluster in the molecular transmission network of the mpox virus, andthehMpxV/China/JS-HA01/2023 sequence was located in the large cluster. The 97 gene sequences formed 92 haplotypes, including three shared haplotypes Hap_4, Hap_6 and Hap_38, and an exclusive haplotype Hap_1 of hMpxV/China/JS-HA01/2023 generated from mutation of the exclusive haplotype Hap_43, while the exclusive haplotype Hap_43 was generated from mutation of the shared haplotype Hap_38. Conclusions The whole genome sequence of the mpox virus isolated from the first confirmed mpox case in Huai’an City has been successfully obtained, and the molecular evolutionary and molecular transmission network characteristics of the virus have been preliminarily understood.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the safety and effectiveness of separation surgery in patients with neurological symptoms of spinal metastases. METHODS: From January 2020 to December 2022, 14 patients with neurological symptoms of spinal metastases underwent separation surgery, including 7 males and 7 females, aged from 30 to 76 years old with an average of (61.57±12.16) years old. In comparison with eleven patients underwent conservative treatment during the same period, including 6 males and 5 femals, aged from 46 to 88 years old with an average of (66.55±12.32) years old. The changes in visual analogue scale (VAS), Frankel grades, Karnofsky scores, and quality of life score (QOL) before and after treatment were compared between two groups. RESULTS: Fourteen patients in the separation surgery group underwent surgery successfully, with surgery time of (218.57±50.00) minutes and intraoperative blood loss of (864.29±332.97) ml, 2 patients developed delayed hematoma and recovered well finally after emergency surgery, the follow-up time was 3 to 36 months, after separation surgery, the pain was significantly relieved, and neurological function recovered well in the patients. Three months after treatment, the VAS in the separation surgery group (1.43±0.76) scores was significantly lower than that in the conservative treatment group (8.64±0.51) scores (P<0.05);and the Frankel grades, Karnofsky scores, and QOL scores in the separation surgery group were significantly better than those in the conservative treatment group(P<0.05). CONCLUSION For patients with obvious neurological symptoms of spinal metastases, separation surgery not only can rapidly relieve nerve compression but also carry relatively low surgical risks, and improve the quality of life of patients.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between miR451a and occult hepatitis B virus infection (OBI) in voluntary blood donors, and to provide ideas for the identification of OBI. METHODS: A total of 125 003 blood samples were collected from voluntary blood donors in our center from January 2022 to June 2023, and OBI infection was detected by blood screening. At the same time, 40 HBsAg double reagent reactive samples (S/CO>3.0) were selected as the positive control group, and 40 healthy blood donors were selected as the negative control group (normal group). The plasma miR451a level was detected, and the serum indexes of total bilirubin (TBil), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST). The relationship between miR451a and OBI were analyzed. RESULTS: 54 out of 125 003 blood samples were diagnosed as OBI, and the OBI infection rate was 0.043% (54/125 003). Compared with the normal group, the relative expression of plasma miR451a in the OBI group and the positive control group was down-regulated (P < 0.05), but there was no significant difference in the relative expression of plasma miR451a between the OBI group and the positive control group (P >0.05). The HBV DNA load, TBil, ALT and AST levels in the positive control group were higher than those in the OBI group and the normal group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in plasma TBil, ALT and AST levels between OBI group and normal group (P >0.05). Logistic regression analysis and receiver operating curve (ROC) showed that plasma miR451a could distinguish OBI group from healthy group, and the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.904 (95%CI : 0.829-0.978). However, plasma miR451a was difficult to distinguish between OBI and HBsAg responders. CONCLUSION Plasma miR451a can be used as a potential biomarker for HBV infection, and can be used to identify OBI in HBsAg non-reactive blood donors.
