1.Self-assessed competency among clinical research professionals in the Philippines using the JTF framework.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE
The Philippines has significant potential as a clinical trial hub but faces a shortage of skilled clinical research professionals (CRPs). In 2022, a cross-sectional study assessed the self-assessed competencies of CRPs in four countries (Thailand, Vietnam, Congo, Philippines) using the Joint Task Force for Clinical Trial Competency (JTF) framework. This paper presents findings on the self-assessed competency and training needs of Filipino CRPs.
METHODSWe conducted a cross-sectional online survey among Filipino clinical research professionals from March to April 2022. We asked for their self-assessed competency, relevance to their roles, and training needs in the competency domains according to the JTF framework. We also asked for the skills in community engagement and research grant application of the investigators. Results were summarized and analyzed according to their primary roles.
RESULTSOne hundred seventy-five (175) Filipino CRPs participated in the survey. They described themselves as “skilled” across all competency domains in conducting clinical research but did not rate themselves at an advanced level. They reported the lowest confidence in their skills related to study management, investigational product development and regulation, and data management. They exhibited greater confidence in competencies such as ethical considerations, professionalism, and communication. Notably, surveyed investigators had the lowest ratings in research design.
CONCLUSIONThis study provides a comprehensive assessment of the self-perceived competencies of a sample of Filipino CRPs using the JTF Clinical Research Competency Framework. It highlights key areas for capacity building, particularly in operational and regulatory competencies. However, due to the non-probability sampling and reliance on self-assessment, findings should be interpreted with caution.

2.Development of a coaching program on leadership for selected personnel in a healthcare environment.

OBJECTIVES
This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a coaching program for enhancing leadership skills among selected personnel at Tondo Medical Center (TMC). Specifically, it sought to: (1) assess the current levels of self-awareness, knowledge, leadership behavior, and leadership skills among the coachees in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory; (2) design a relevant and transformative coaching program on leadership based on the results of the needs assessment; (3) measure the changes in self-awareness, knowledge, leadership behavior, and leadership skills of the coachees after the coaching intervention; and (4) determine the overall effectiveness of the coaching program formulated for the study. The program utilized the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model, focusing on improving self-awareness, knowledge, behavior, and leadership skills.
METHODSA quasi-experimental design was employed, incorporating pre- and post-test assessments to measure changes in leadership skills. The study was conducted in the Department of Pathology, which was purposively selected as the study site. Participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n = 34), which underwent a structured coaching intervention, or the control group (n = 24), which did not receive the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality tests, and the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test to determine the program’s impact on leadership development.
RESULTSPost-test evaluations demonstrated significant improvements in leadership skills among participants in the experimental group. Self-awareness scores increased from 2.9 to 4.86 (Z = -4.88, p < 0.05), and leadership skills showed the most significant improvement, increasing from 2.9 to 4.96 (Z = -4.92, pCONCLUSION
The coaching program proved highly effective in enhancing participants' leadership skills, including self-awareness, confidence, and professional growth. Participants rated the program's structure and delivery positively, with an overall mean satisfaction score of 4.91 (SD = 0.27). These findings underscore the potential of structured coaching programs to enhance leadership competencies in healthcare settings. Recommendations include expanding the program to other institutions, incorporating advanced content, and conducting long-term evaluations to assess sustained impacts.

3.A framework for mental health services to address the gender-related concerns of UP Manila constituents

BACKGROUND
In response to the need to provide for mental health services to address gender-related concerns in a higher education institute, the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila Center for Gender and Women Studies (CGWS) commissioned a project to formulate a framework for the increasing volume of referrals.
METHODOLOGYA mixed methods study was done in order to gather data to create a responsive and practical mental health care service provision framework with and for service providers and service users in the university. An online survey (N=135), focus group discussion, key informant interviews, and a round table discussion were conducted, with constituents of the university recruited through purposive sampling.
RESULTSA stepped-care model was proposed, consisting of: 1. Preventive Well-Being Resources, 2. Supportive Well-Being Interventions and Initial Screening Resources, 3. Structured Interventions, and 4. Interventions for Severe Mental Health Problems.
CONCLUSIONThe framework formulated in collaboration with service providers and service users in the university addresses the goals of optimizing existing resources and enhancing service provision. Implementation and evaluation of this framework, as well as further information regarding the target population and their use of this model, are proposed avenues for further research.

4.Quantitative Analysis of Creative Self-Efficacy amongst University Students in Malaysia

Objective:
One key factor found to be related to creativity is creative self-efficacy. Creative self efficacy
(CSE) refers to one’s own conviction in their own ability to produce creative work effectively. The study aims to explore on the predictive values of time management and reading habit on CSE, as well as on
the significant difference between gender and CSE.
Method:
This study (n = 313) is a cross-sectional survey design. The inclusion criteria for the participants are full-time university students studying in Malaysia and aged between 18-25 years old. Data collected was analysed by linear regression, multiple linear regression and independent sample t-Test.
Results:
Reading habit is a significant positive predictor of CSE. Both daily planning and confidence
in long-range planning in time management are significant positive predictors of CSE. However, there
is no significant difference between gender in terms of male and female and CSE.
Conclusion
This study provided evidence on the role of reading habits and time management on
creative self-efficacy amongst undergraduate student in Malaysia.

5.Gender influence on hyperacute intracerebral hemorrhage prognosis: A demographic, clinical and radiologic analysis

BACKGROUND
There is growing interest in gender differences in acute stroke worldwide. However, no known studies have been published on the differences in prognosis of hyperacute intracerebral hemorrhage between genders among Asians, particularly Filipinos.
OBJECTIVESCompare gender differences in the prognosis of hyperacute intracerebral hemorrhage in terms of baseline demographic and radiologic profile, as well as, clinical outcomes.
METHODSThis is a retrospective cohort study involving a chart review of all patients diagnosed with hyperacute Intracerebral Hemorrhage admitted at a tertiary hospital from January 2021 to May 2023. Patients were grouped according to their gender and baseline demographic, radiologic and clinical outcomes were assessed and compared between two groups.
RESULTSNo statistical difference was found between stroke risk factors between the two groups. However, males tend to have higher percentages of intraventricular extension (29.2 %. (n=28) vs 30.6% (n=11) and increased hematoma volume compared to their female counterparts (n=39, 83% vs n=11, 68%). In addition, males had a higher number of ICU admissions (42.7% (n= 41) vs. 33.3% (n= 12) and mortality (46.9%( n=45) vs. 30.6% (n=11), though the results were not statistically significant.
CONCLUSIONIn patients with hyperacute intracerebral hemorrhage, gender does not influence on its radiologic and clinical outcome.

6.Dissecting Social Working Memory: Neural and Behavioral Evidence for Externally and Internally Oriented Components.

Social working memory (SWM)-the ability to maintain and manipulate social information in the brain-plays a crucial role in social interactions. However, research on SWM is still in its infancy and is often treated as a unitary construct. In the present study, we propose that SWM can be conceptualized as having two relatively independent components: "externally oriented SWM" (e-SWM) and "internally oriented SWM" (i-SWM). To test this external-internal hypothesis, participants were tasked with memorizing and ranking either facial expressions (e-SWM) or personality traits (i-SWM) associated with images of faces. We then examined the neural correlates of these two SWM components and their functional roles in empathy. The results showed distinct activations as the e-SWM task activated the postcentral and precentral gyri while the i-SWM task activated the precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex and superior frontal gyrus. Distinct multivariate activation patterns were also found within the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex in the two tasks. Moreover, partial least squares analyses combining brain activation and individual differences in empathy showed that e-SWM and i-SWM brain activities were mainly correlated with affective empathy and cognitive empathy, respectively. These findings implicate distinct brain processes as well as functional roles of the two types of SWM, providing support for the internal-external hypothesis of SWM.

7.Job Preferences of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Workers: A Discrete Choice Experiment in China.

OBJECTIVE:
This study explored the job choice preferences of Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) workers to provide CDC management information and recommendations for optimizing employee retention and motivation policies.
METHODS:
A discrete choice experiment was conducted in nine provinces across China. Seven key attributes were identified to analyze the job preferences of CDC workers. Mixed logit models, latent class models, and policy simulation tools were used.
RESULTS:
A valid sample of 5,944 cases was included in the analysis. All seven attributes significantly influenced the job choices of CDC workers. Heterogeneity analyses identified two main groups based on different levels of preference for attribute utility. Income-prioritizers were concerned with income and opportunities for career development, whereas bianzhi-prioritizers were concerned with bianzhi and welfare benefits. The policy simulation analysis revealed that income-prioritizers had a relatively higher sensitivity to multiple job preference incentives.
CONCLUSION
Income and bianzhi were the two key attributes influencing the job choices and retention preferences of CDC workers. Heterogeneity in job preferences was also identified. Based on the preference characteristics of different subgroups, policy content should be skewed to differentiate the importance of incentives.

8.Significant motor recovery after ischemic stroke: A case report emphasizing the role of patient adherence and motivation in long-term rehabilitation.

Stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, demanding extensive and often prolonged rehabilitation. This case report describes the recovery of Mr. Julio, a 60-year-old male, who suffered an ischemic stroke at age 58, resulting in left-sided hemiparesis and balance issues. Even with delays in formal rehabilitation, he made a remarkable recovery over nearly three years. This is because of his strong intrinsic motivation, sustained adherence to therapy, and family support. His symptoms included left-sided weakness, numbness, vertigo, vomiting, and critically high blood pressure. Crucially, his diagnosis was confirmed by MRI only three months later and formal physical therapy started only after six months. Treatment included an emergency TPA, blood pressure control, antiplatelets, and a sustained home- based physical therapy regimen. This case highlights how patient-driven factors can lead to significant recovery even in resource-limited settings, emphasizing the role of motivation and adherence in long-term stroke rehabilitation.

9.Impact of fear of coronavirus disease 2019 on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder traits associated with depressive symptoms, functional impairment, and low self-esteem in university students: a cross-sectional study with mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND:
High levels of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) traits are associated with various outcomes, including depressive symptoms, functional impairment, and low self-esteem. Additionally, individuals with high levels of ADHD traits are reported to be more adversely affected by fear of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The current study aimed to examine whether the association between ADHD traits and outcomes was partially mediated by fear of COVID-19 using mediation analysis.
METHODS:
A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of university students in medical-related faculties (n = 1,166). ADHD traits, fear of COVID-19, depressive symptoms, functional impairment, and self-esteem were assessed using the adult ADHD Self-Report Scale, Fear of COVID-19 Scale, K6 Scale, Sheehan Disability Scale, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, respectively. We used linear regression analysis and the Paramed command in Stata to analyze whether fear of COVID-19 mediated the association between ADHD traits and outcomes.
RESULTS:
ADHD traits were significantly associated with outcomes. Regarding the impact of fear of COVID-19, the results revealed a significant association between ADHD traits and fear of COVID-19, and between fear of COVID-19 and outcomes. The results of the mediation analyses showed that the association between ADHD traits and outcomes was partially mediated by the fear of COVID-19 (depressive symptoms: direct effect B = 1.029, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.878, 1.181, indirect effect B = 0.021, 95% CI 0.002, 0.040; functional impairment: direct effect B = 0.786, 95% CI 0.593, 0.979, indirect effect B = 0.033, 95% CI 0.005, 0.060; self-esteem: direct effect B = -1.052, 95% CI -1.226, -0.878, indirect effect B = -0.024, 95% CI -0.046, -0.002).
CONCLUSIONS
Developing preventive measures against the adverse impacts of pandemics like COVID-19 will be particularly important for individuals with high levels of ADHD traits in future.

10.Current status and influencing factors of care burden in informal caregivers of patients with pressure injuries.

OBJECTIVES:
With the accelerating aging of the population and the rising prevalence of chronic diseases, the number of patients with pressure injuries (PIs) has increased markedly, prolonging the period of disease-related care. Informal caregivers play a critical role in the daily care of patients with pressure injuries, and their care burden has become increasingly prominent. This study aims to investigate the current status and influencing factors of care burden among informal caregivers of patients with PIs, providing evidence for targeted intervention strategies.
METHODS:
A total of 170 informal caregivers of patients with PIs were selected by convenience sampling from the Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. General demographic and clinical data of both patients and caregivers were collected. The Zarit Caregiver Burden Inventory (ZBI), Knowledge-Attitude-Practice Scale for Informal Caregivers of Patients with PIs, General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), and Family Caregiver Task Inventory (FCTI) were used to assess caregiving burden, knowledge-attitude-practice level, self-efficacy, and caregiving ability, respectively. Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to evaluate relationships among ZBI, Knowledge-Attitude-Practice Scale for Informal Caregivers of Patients with PIs, GSES, and FCTI scores. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify factors influencing caregiving.
RESULTS:
Among the 170 patients with pressure injuries, the age was (65.52±15.88) years; 118 (69.41%) were male and 52 (30.59%) were female. The duration of PIs was less than 1 month in 108 (63.53%) cases and 1 to 6 months in 40 cases (23.53%). Stage II injuries were predominant (135 cases, 79.41%). A total of 193 pressure injury sites were recorded, most commonly located at the sacrococcygeal region (127 sites, 65.80%), followed by the head (3 sites, 1.55%), shoulder and back (9 sites, 4.66%), feet (24 sites, 12.44%), and other regions (30 sites, 15.55%). Informal caregivers were 48.82% aged 46 to 59 years, 54.71% female, 41.77% primarily spouses and 47.06% children of the patients, and 77.06% lived with the patients. Caregivers who received assistance from others or had higher family per-capita monthly income reported significantly lower caregiver burden scores than those without assistance or with lower income (all P<0.001). The total ZBI score was 50.89±14.95, indicating a moderate burden. The total scores of the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice Scale for Informal Caregivers, GSES, and FCTI were 50.61±7.22, 26.03±7.11, and 14.76±8.70, respectively. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that ZBI scores were correlated with scores on the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice Scale for Informal Caregivers of Patients with PIs (r=-0.543, P<0.001), GSES scores (r=-0.545, P<0.001), and FCTI scores (r=0.800, P<0.001). The scores on Knowledge-Attitude-Practice Scale for Informal Caregivers of patients with PIs were correlated with GSES scores (r=0.500, P<0.001) and FCTI scores (r=-0.461, P<0.001); GSES scores was negatively correlated with FCTI scores (r=-0.415, P<0.001). Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis showed that assistance availability, family per-capita monthly income, total scores on the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice Scale for Informal Caregivers of Patients with PIs, total GSES score, and total FCTI score were the main influencing factors of caregiver burden, jointly explaining 79.38% of its variance.
CONCLUSIONS
The main factors influencing the caregiving burden of informal caregivers of patients with PIs include the availability of assistance, family per-capita monthly income, total score on the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice Scale for Informal Caregivers of PI patients, total score on the GSES, and total score on the FCTI. Developing targeted intervention strategies addressing these factors may help alleviate the caregiving burden among informal caregivers of patients with PIs.
