1.Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study on the Experiences of Employment of Married North Korean Women Defectors Rearing Children

PURPOSE: This study aimed to understand the experiences of married North Korean women's child-rearing, working lives, and their home and work environment in depth.METHODS: This study adopted van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological method to qualitatively analyze data. The participants were 8 married North Korean women defectors. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations from July 4 to August 20, 2018.RESULTS: Nine essential themes emerged: more personal challenges after overcoming a life-threatening crisis; hopes of firmly settling in this land; the wound from the north, which chased them here; a body that becomes stronger through hardship; being stuck in a past full of anxiety and pain; the present is full of hope; hope for the future; sense of alienation from coworkers that cannot be overcome; and sense of power to endure an exhausting work life.CONCLUSION: This study provided a broader understanding of the life and experiences of married women from North Korea. It highlights the need for nurses to recognize their importance in nursing care. The study also suggests that academic and practical approaches for nursing, and basic data for a nursing intervention for married women from North Korea be provided. The study findings can be used as a basis for preparing a national policy that will help North Korean defectors to find employment and gain stability.

2.Experiences of Precocious Puberty in Primary School Girls with Hormone Therapeutics

PURPOSE: The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify the nature of precocious puberty and to explore what it means in primary schools.METHODS: The participants of this phenomenological study were nine primary school girls who were diagnosed with precocious puberty and experienced hormone therapeutics, applying a convenience sampling method. Data were collected from July 2017 to January 2018 through individual in-depth interviews of the participants, including gestures, facial expressions and nonverbal means. The data analysis followed the method of Giorgi.RESULTS: The study identified 37 concepts, 12 clusters, and five themes from experiences of precocious puberty. The essential five themes were as follows: ‘ashamed and concealing experience’, ‘there is no therapeutics option’, ‘difficulties in the process of therapeutics’, ‘difficulties in daily life’, and ‘ambivalence toward therapeutics’.CONCLUSION: The findings of this study indicate physical, psychological and social difficulties faced by girls with precocious puberty. Based on this results of the study, it is necessary to develop nursing intervention programs focusing on healthy growth and development for children with precocious puberty.

3.Conflicts Experienced by the Nurses in Hospital Nursing Organizations

PURPOSE: The present research was done to examine the fundamental significance and structure of conflict experience of nurses in hospital nursing organizations.METHODS: This qualitative research was conducted by analyzing data collected through in-depth interviews based on Colaizzi's (1978) method of analysis, one of the phenomenological methods of analysis.RESULTS: Statements from the 12 study participants demonstrate two key topics “accumulation of conflicts” and “manifestation of new conflicts” as well as seven sub-topics including “being forced to comply”, “Lack of respect and consideration”, “unsatisfactory conflict management by the leaders”, “continuous and overwhelming vicious cycle”, “prevalence of self-defensive egotism”, “difficult to accept differences”, and “incapable of responding to the structural changes of nursing workforce”.CONCLUSION: Resolving the dysfunctional conflicts in hospital nursing organizations requires not only improvement in the organizational culture of individuals and nursing organizations, but also legal and institutional measures in addition to new attempts to integrate education and research findings from relevant fields of studies.

4.Demands for Mental Health Nursing Education and Works of Nurses at Private Psychiatric Hospital: A Mixed Methods Research

PURPOSE: The purpose of this mixed-method study was to identify the demand for mental health nursing education and work of nurses at a private psychiatric hospital.METHODS: The survey of demand for mental nursing education was conducted by including 231 nurses at a private psychiatric hospital from November to December, 2017. Qualitative research by two focus groups was conducted from October to November, 2018.RESULTS: The mean of mental health nursing education demands according to major category were the therapeutic environment (4.27±0.76), substancerelated and addictive disorders (4.18±0.68), therapeutic relationship and communication (4.17±0.64), respect for human (4.11±0.74), and neurocognitive disorders (4.07±0.74). The qualitative research participants’ demands for mental health nursing education were classified into five categories: ‘discrimination power’, ‘communication techniques’, ‘psychiatric drugs’, ‘coping method’, and ‘legal issues’.CONCLUSION: Nurses with less psychiatric careers have strong need to learn a therapeutic environment and alcoholism, and nurses with more experience in psychiatry have education of humanities. Nurses at private psychiatric hospitals have high demand for continous education of updated mental nursing to expand their extensive experience required for becoming more professional nurses in future.

5.The Occurrence Background of Incivility Perceived by Nursing Students

PURPOSE: The purpose of this qualitative research is to explore the background of occurrence of perceived incivility by nursing students in clinical practice.METHOD: Data were collected through focus interviews and individual interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis.RESULT: The results showed that three categories that represented the background of occurrence of incivility were scheme which is not cleared, position which is not settled and unequal relationship.CONCLUSION: Since the background of occurrence of perceived incivility is complex, So it is required to macroscopic approach to reduce the perceived incivility of the students in the clinical practice.

6.Experience of Cancer Patients Receiving Spiritual Nursing Care in one Christian General Hospital

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand the essence and meaning of the experience of cancer patients receiving spiritual nursing. METHODS: Data were collected by in-depth individual interviews with participants from April to June, 2019. Eight patients from a single Christian hospital participated in this study. Cyclical data collection and analysis were conducted by Collaizzi's phenomenological method. RESULTS: The experience of cancer patients receiving spiritual nursing consisted of four themes: strange spiritual nursing faced with longing, unexpected changes in me, spiritual sympathy leading to trust, and transition to spiritual recovery. CONCLUSION: This study provided an in-depth understanding of the changes cancer patients experience through spiritual nursing interventions. Efforts should be made to verify the effectiveness of this study by developing and applying education programs that can enhance the spiritual nursing capabilities of nurses to better approach cancer patients.

7.Experience of Nursing Management Practice in Graduate Nurses

PURPOSE: The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate nursing students' experience during nursing management practicum. METHODS: Data were collected from 10 in-depth interviews. The main question was “Could you describe your experience during the nursing management practicum?” The qualitative data from the field notes and transcriptions of the interviews were analyzed using Colaizzi's method. RESULTS: The experiential themes of students' experience during a nursing management practicum were ‘differentiate clinical practice which is immersed in the nursing management process’, ‘understand nurse managers’ leadership qualities and influence of communication', ‘understand why the general nurse engages in management tasks on duty’, ‘gain insight into organizational operations from new and diverse perspectives’, ‘engage in nursing practice through abundant interaction’. CONCLUSION: The results show that the nursing management practicum focuses on the management of nurses and nurse manager, so instruction and guidance by professors and practicing leaders is needed for students to practice these goals, In addition, in the clinical practice field, students should be provided with a practical environment and guidance in accordance with the goal of management practice.

8.Changes in Strauss & Corbin's Grounded Theory

PURPOSE: This study aimed to introduce and elucidate changes in Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory and discuss its application to the field of nursing in South Korea. METHODS: The changes in grounded theory by Strauss and Corbin were examined through a literature review of grounded theory from its inception. RESULTS: Strauss and Corbin acknowledged their philosophical backgrounds of symbolic interactionism and pragmatism; however, their methodology based on positivism overwhelmed their epistemology and ontology. This inconsistency has been represented by the coding paradigm and the premise of “emergent from the data.” In the revised version of Basics, Strauss and Corbin modified their theory to weaken the coding paradigm and strengthen the strategies for the development of substantive theory. CONCLUSION: Strauss and Corbin's revised grounded theory did not fully address the inconsistency of their epistemology and ontology between their acknowledgement and methodology. However, these changes constitute a meaningful step toward resolving inconsistencies and highlight the development of substantive theory. This has implications for Korean nursing researchers who have utilized methodologies in grounded theory with dogmatic approaches; grounded theory, with its evolving nature, is not a finalized method and calls for open approaches for the development of a grounded theory that fits Korean nursing.

9.Trend Analysis of Theory-based Research Published in Asian Oncology Nursing

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to identify and analyze the trends of theory-based research published in Asian Oncology Nursing (AON) from 2011 to 2017. METHODS: We analyzed 22 theory-based studies taken from among the 232 studies published in AON for 7years. We analyzed the framework developed by researchers, descriptive summaries of theory, keyword classification of nursing meta-paradigms, the generic character of the studies, and the type of research designs. RESULTS: A total of 23 theories were applied in the 22 (9.5%) studies. ‘Nursing’ was the most prevalent field of study (34.8%). In the field of study of theory, nursing theory was the largest with eight (34.8%), and in the method of theory utilization, all 22 studies were theoretical applications 3 middle-range theories were most prevalent. In the keyword classification using meta-paradigm in nursing, we found 83 key words. Among them, ‘Health’ related key words were most frequent (53), followed by ‘Cancer’ keywords (13). CONCLUSION: AON has a high ratio of theoretical study compared to other journals, but the ratio is still less than 10%, which is still weak. Therefore, it is believed that the attention to, utilization of, application, and institutional establishment of nursing theory should be necessary.

10.A Comparative Study on Learning Outcomes according to the Integration Sequences of S-PBL in Nursing Students: Randomized Crossover Design

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the effects of simulation integrated with problem based learning (S-PBL) according to the sequences of problem-based learning (PBL) and high fidelity simulation training (HFS) on knowledge, clinical performance, clinical judgment, self-confidence, and satisfaction in fourth-grade nursing students. METHODS: In this randomized crossover design study, four S-PBLs on medical-surgical nursing were applied alternatively to two randomly-assigned groups of 26 senior nursing students for 8 weeks. The collected data were analyzed using an independent t-test. RESULTS: The method of administering PBL prior to HFS led to significantly higher scores on knowledge (t=2.28, p=.025) as compared to the method of administering HFS prior to PBL. However, the latter method led to significantly higher scores on clinical performance (t=−6.49, p < .001) and clinical judgment (t=−4.71, p < .001) as compared to the method of administering PBL prior to HFS. There were no differences in the effect of the two methods on self-confidence (t=1.53, p=.128) and satisfaction (t=1.28, p=.202). CONCLUSION: The integration sequences of S-PBL was associated with different learning outcomes. Therefore, when implementing S-PBL, it is necessary to consider the educational goal to executes an appropriate sequence of integration.
